01:42You've seen buildings collapse in earthquakes, but this footage from Venezuela
01:47shows something that will genuinely stop you in your tracks.
01:51Highways split clean in two, while you're driving on them.
01:55There are videos circulating right now that are hard to believe.
01:59You're looking at a major highway, the kind with multiple lanes, trucks, normal traffic, and straight down the middle of
02:05it is a deep jagged crack running as far as the camera can see.
02:09In one clip, drivers are swerving around a split so wide you could lose a tire in it.
02:15In another, filmed from inside a moving car, the road just opens up in front of you.
02:21Pavement lifted on one side, exposed earth below. Cars stopped dead.
02:26The roads near Puerto Cabello run through coastal zones, and coastal soil is often saturated with water.
02:33When you shake that kind of soil hard enough and fast enough, it temporarily stops behaving like solid ground and
02:40starts behaving like liquid.
02:42The road above it suddenly has nothing firm underneath it. It sinks, it tilts, it splits. Engineers described these splits
02:50as a classic sign that the ground itself failed, not just the road surface on top.
02:55And here's why this is actually more consequential than it looks. Roads aren't just for commuting.
03:02Right now, those cracked highways are the same roads rescue teams need to reach people trapped under rubble.
03:08They're the routes aid supplies travel. They connect Caracas to the coast, to the ports, to the airport, which is
03:14also closed.
03:16Brazil, Ecuador, and other countries are already preparing aid, but getting that aid in is complicated when the airport is
03:23damaged and the roads are fractured.
03:25Venezuela's government has declared a state of emergency, and rescue operations are active. Aftershocks are still hitting.
03:32Officials are warning people to stay off weakened routes entirely. This is a disaster that is still unfolding, and the
03:39infrastructure damage is going to shape the recovery for months, if not longer.
03:43A road, a road splitting open while you're on it. That's not movie stuff. That's real footage from Venezuela, right
03:50now.
03:51The earthquake didn't just damage buildings, it tore apart the very ground people travel on every single day.
