00:01Welcome to Bermuda.
00:03An island in the middle of the Atlantic.
00:08I wouldn't want to police anywhere else. It's paradise.
00:12A police service tackling crime.
00:15Looks like a homemade machete, doesn't it?
00:18To keep this British Overseas Territory safe.
00:22We've got a bike failing to stop.
00:26Right now, you're swearing at me and I'm disrespectful.
00:30Up close to investigations.
00:33One of the most dangerous drugs in the market today is a killer.
00:37Is there extra pressure with it being linked to a murder?
00:40I'd say so.
00:41Catching criminals at the border.
00:43You are being placed under arrest with a suspicion of conspiracy to employ drugs into the theater.
00:48At the airport.
00:49K9 has shown interest in your bags.
00:53And on the wheelchair.
00:55You're walking away from my officer.
00:57Can you stop the boat, please?
00:59With the busy summer here.
01:01Get back, please.
01:02Go back, go back.
01:03This is peak season for the police.
01:08I'm here.
01:10Some kind of view in it.
01:15Today, in Bermuda, tourists cause mayhem on the roads.
01:20I thought a car was coming to hit me, so I tried to get out of the way.
01:23And a cruise ship passenger is under suspicion.
01:26They found some sort of powder substance on their person.
01:29And police keep watch on the capital's nightlife.
01:32Open up!
01:34Hello!
01:34Can you hear me?
01:39Bermuda's turquoise waters attract 180 cruise ships and thousands of visitors each year.
01:46All keen to explore this subtropical paradise.
01:48Tourists arrive en masse, you know, on cruise ships, and that swells the population of Bermuda.
01:55And with so many visitors from the US, they quickly learn that driving on the left is all part of
02:01the Bermuda experience.
02:02They don't always remember which side of the road to be on.
02:07Which is an accident waiting to happen.
02:13Police Constable Jason Ming is on patrol in the west of the island,
02:17travelling in convoy with fellow police constable Rajiv Bailey and DeForest Evans.
02:23A native of Bermuda, Officer Jason has been with the police service for 35 years.
02:29Good times, bad times, but all in all, I love the police service.
02:32A day can't go by when you don't go away and smile.
02:35So I'm that person that's going to try to make you have that smile for the day.
02:38A call comes in reporting a road traffic collision on the far side of the island.
02:43All officers head to the scene.
02:46Captain at Devendree on Trimingham Hill.
02:49So you never know how bad the accident is, so you try to get there as soon as you can.
02:53On Bermuda's narrow winding roads, only officers with advanced driver training, like Officer Jason, are cleared to drive at high
03:01speed.
03:03You tell our people who are on the drive not to get too involved in it, so that they don't
03:08think about what's set down there and think about your drive, you know?
03:15Two American tourists, a husband and wife from a cruise ship, have crashed their rented motor scooter.
03:22Officer DeForest Evans was one of the first on the scene.
03:26So ma'am, how are you doing?
03:27How are you doing?
03:28My name is Constable Evans from the Rural Policing Unit, okay?
03:31If you could just explain what occurred to me here that you could recall.
03:35Well, we were making a U-turn and trying to go back into the direction where we were headed to
03:41and the scooter hit the curb a little bit and rolled over slightly and my husband kind of got caught
03:49up underneath of it.
03:50Okay, but you're not hurt at all, right?
03:51I'm not.
03:52Okay.
03:52He protected me.
03:53That's a great husband.
03:54That's a great husband.
03:55The best.
03:56He's fine.
03:56Pulling out here in traffic and hit the side of the curb and couldn't get away from the curb and
04:02down it went.
04:04She went on top of it.
04:06He complained of injuries to or soreness to his left side of his rim and then he had a little
04:11bit of what we call a root rash on his left knee.
04:13He seems okay now.
04:14I had a conversation with him and asked him if he feels confident to hop back on his cycle.
04:19Shaky.
04:20A little sore.
04:21That's the major part.
04:24Officer Jason directs traffic around the accident scene.
04:29You don't want to get a backup of traffic and have something else to deal with that's getting out of
04:33control.
04:33So you want to be able to take care of that situation as fast as you can.
04:38You guys, you guys going to call a cab or how are you thinking?
04:43Think you're going to be okay with riding?
04:45If not, we would call delivery company to come and collect this.
04:49After their traumatic experience, the tourists are keen to swap roadside chaos for cruise ship luxury.
04:55It's a nice steak and laughter.
04:57You get it tonight.
04:58You deserve it tonight, yeah?
05:00You deserve it.
05:02Shaken but not seriously injured, they decide to get back on their bikes.
05:07Sad to meet you.
05:09Sad to have had to meet you.
05:12No sooner have the officers wrapped up one crash when another call comes in.
05:19Another accident occurred a few miles down the street and there's some more tourists on rental bikes.
05:27And they struck a wall so we're getting down there to sort of that one as well.
05:31This time, it's more serious.
05:45The former naval dockyard is Bermuda's busiest port, receiving over 300,000 people each year.
05:53That means checking hundreds of passengers for controlled substances to keep the island safe.
06:01It is a very rewarding job to know that you're here to protect your borders in the island that I
06:08love and where I live as well, to protect our community.
06:13Officer Angela Simmons has worked for customs for 25 years.
06:17I have seen practically every drug there is.
06:20A lot of it actually is personal use.
06:23And it's often the most dangerous drugs that passengers attempt to bring in.
06:28We're seeing fentanyl here, we're seeing crystal meth, we're seeing heroin, we're seeing cocaine.
06:37If it's cocaine or any hard drug, there's an automatic arrest.
06:42People, especially when they get caught, they get into flight mode and you see a whole different person.
06:48What had emotional, what had everything here.
06:55With 4,000 passengers disembarking, Officer Angela is on the lookout for anything suspicious.
07:02It's like picking a needle out of a haystack.
07:05And without disrupting the start of their holidays.
07:09We're just observing passengers as they're coming off the ship.
07:12Majority of the first lot of passengers off the ship have excursions on some tours around Bermuda.
07:20We're looking for THC, the marijuana vapes.
07:24It's illegal here in Bermuda, because it's cannabis-based.
07:28You two are travelling together?
07:30Yes.
07:30Yes.
07:31What is this?
07:32Chewing tobacco.
07:33Any vapes?
07:34Are you carrying $10,000 in cash?
07:37Yeah.
07:39Any prescription drugs?
07:41Is there any fresh fruits or anything?
07:42No, no, no.
07:44You all right?
07:45Any drugs of any kind?
07:47Any TAC products?
07:49I vape.
07:49What type of vape is it?
07:51Nicotine.
07:52Nicotine?
07:53Yeah.
07:53Okay.
07:54It's a scorcher today.
07:56My feet are hurting.
07:58I'm ready to sit down.
07:59How are you there, Carol?
08:00How are you there?
08:00With half the ship still to come, Officer Angela and the customs team face a busy morning
08:06ahead.
08:17Officer Rajiv Bailey had earlier attended an accident involving a scooter rented by American tourists
08:24from a cruise ship.
08:25The police have now been called to the second accident just a short distance away.
08:30We get tourists from Canada and the US and then our roads are a lot smaller, right?
08:36So they're not used to the winding roads.
08:39You know, them being on a scooter can just be a recipe for disaster.
08:42They don't know what they're doing or they didn't get the right instruction in the beginning.
08:48The woman who crashed her scooter is not only from the same cruise ship as the couple earlier, they're close
08:55friends.
08:56But they were from the same party of people.
08:59So if they've had a collision farther west, they've tried to turn around because they found out that their mates
09:05had a collision.
09:06And if they themselves then had a collision with the wall, I was trying to do what you thought.
09:14For them to find out that their mates were in a crash and then they then turn and try to
09:19turn around and then get into a crash.
09:23You can't write that. You can't script that, can you?
09:25So we were trying to get to them and I thought a car was coming to hit me.
09:29So I tried to get out of the way and I just, yeah, just stupid.
09:35She's come off worse than her friends with the impact of hitting the wall.
09:39Okay, so there's, ooh, my knee. Can you see it?
09:43All right, and then there's a little bit of the leg.
09:47When you get to a collision like that and you take a look and you ascertain what the injury is
09:52going to be like,
09:52she initially said she may have bumped her head, she's wearing a helmet, helmet still fastened.
09:58So initially you're not thinking the worst.
10:00And the group of friends are determined not to let their accidents ruin their holiday.
10:05Really sad. I mean, we're on vacation. So, yeah, it was just an accident. She's going to be okay.
10:11We're going to get on the scooters again and get them back. Yeah, we'll be all right.
10:16It's a positive outcome. The group are a little bruised,
10:19but very grateful for the help they received from Officer Rajiv and the team.
10:25You guys are phenomenal. I'm going to give you a handshake.
10:28Pray for your family, guys.
10:29Please do.
10:30Thank you so much.
10:30You're welcome, ma'am. Thank you.
10:31I treat people how I want to be treated in a foreign country.
10:36You want to make sure that people are okay at the end of the day.
10:39It's not a safe place out here. It's good.
10:53At Dockyard, Customs Officer Angela continues to keep a close watch over thousands of cruise ship passengers arriving in Bermuda,
11:01alert for anything suspicious.
11:04Are you traveling with any weapons of any kind? Any drugs of any kind?
11:12Meanwhile, in the south of the island, police constables Tyler Kendall and Jamila Sabir are on patrol.
11:19I usually would go camping growing up.
11:23Nice.
11:24I'm saying George is off of Henn Island there.
11:27Oh, cool, cool.
11:27Yeah.
11:29They receive an urgent call to go to the cruise ship terminal in the far northwest, 12 miles away.
11:40Hours of checks on cruise ship visitors have finally paid off.
11:44Customs Officer Angela now has a detainee.
11:48So we just received a report of a person being detained at Heritage Wharf on one of the cruise ships.
11:56They're being detained because they found some sort of powder substance on their person.
12:02All right. What are we thinking? Cocaine?
12:05I'm thinking it could be.
12:10So we're just at Heritage Wharf now.
12:15It's one of the ports of entry for the cruise ships.
12:18So the customs officers have since seized that powdery substance and detained the person whose cabinet was found in.
12:25So right now, what we're looking at is probably an arrest on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.
12:32The customs team hand over the evidence they've seized to the police.
12:38Officers Tyler and Jamila then arrest the man.
12:42So we just came from dealing with the gentleman inside.
12:47We've arrested him for suspicion of controlled drugs.
12:50So we'll have some powdery substance and also this looks like some sort of vape.
12:57The suspect has been found in possession of a suspicious white powder and a cannabis product, which is illegal in
13:04Bermuda.
13:05So he said that he actually bought it to Bermuda.
13:08He wasn't aware that it was illegal in Bermuda, so he bought it in the US and then bought it
13:13with him.
13:13And sometimes tourists don't understand that these types of drugs could be illegal in Bermuda.
13:21The officers now take the man to the main police station across the other side of the island.
13:26That was the holiday over for him.
13:27Nothing's really going to be the same after that, after you've been kicked off the cruise ship.
13:33With a 15-mile journey, there's plenty of time to talk.
13:38When we were walking off the boat and we were going, you know, actually I had to go through that
13:43a little...
13:43Right, security?
13:45Yeah, they asked to look at my bag. So I came in my bag.
13:48They asked to find any vape that showed my vape.
13:51They said that I wasn't allowed to have that one.
13:53I said, all right, well, you know, why can't I have her?
13:56Mm-hmm.
13:57They just said, um, because it's T&C and I brought her out of the store and I have her
14:02receipt.
14:02Mm-hmm.
14:03DVD.
14:05Right.
14:05But they, you have to consider it all the same over here.
14:09The suspect's nerves kick in. He wants to know exactly how much trouble he's landed himself in.
14:15Have you seen a lot of people get arrested off the cruise ships?
14:19It happens, unfortunately, yeah.
14:22If it had just been the vapes and stuff like that, it's likely that it would have just been a
14:26formal caution and you'd have been out of here by this afternoon.
14:31But unfortunately, with what's suspected to be cocaine...
14:35Yeah, but you've been asking all of it or not, it's only a tiny bit.
14:38It is still a criminal offense to have that in your possession.
14:41He quickly learns that the offense he's suspected of carries greater weight in Bermuda than it might on home turf.
14:48So what do they usually do about something like that?
14:51Um, it depends. Um, it depends, it does depend on the amount.
14:55Um, I didn't get a good chance to take a look at how much was found on yourself.
15:00Maybe a gram, maybe a little less.
15:02Yeah.
15:02At the end of the day, it's gonna be the Department of Public Prosecution that has their final say and
15:06all.
15:08It's not the start of the holiday he planned.
15:11His first day on the island will now be spent in custody, facing a possible serious drug charge.
15:27With the two tourist bike crashes behind him, Officer Rajiv, joined by his colleague, police constable Rachel Benedict, is spending
15:36the last part of his shift on crash prevention duty.
15:39I've seen tourists, and you can't blame them, right, because most of them are from Canada or from the United
15:45States, and they're so accustomed to riding on the right side of the road that their brain instinctively tells them
15:50to come out of a gate or come out of a junction and stick to the right.
15:55So, they're heading to visit a scooter hire company to see how well they equip rookie riders.
16:01You've got to reinforce that in their head because it's almost as if they're pre-programmed to look the opposite
16:07direction.
16:08His colleague, Officer Rachel, moved here from London just a year ago and has experience being a learner rider herself,
16:15albeit on the same side of the road that she's used to.
16:19I rented a scooter for like three months when I first got here, which actually was fantastic because I got
16:24to see all of the island, like it's quite a freeing experience, but I wouldn't say it was mildly terrifying
16:31to start with.
16:33With each household in Bermuda only allowed one car, scooters are often the vehicle of choice.
16:39Well, to be fair, in comparison to a car, it's much more convenient. Would you agree?
16:43Absolutely, it's lovely. Really, the only thing is the rain. If the rain comes down, that was it. I didn't
16:48have any waterproofs for the first however long, so I was just getting drenched.
16:53To keep holidays accident-free, the officers are making sure first-time scooter riders are being given safety advice.
17:02Yeah, so in Bermuda, this is one of the companies that rents scooters on the island.
17:08Delivery cycles, they're capped out at 50cc for visiting tourists.
17:12At the end of the day, you want people to come here, you want people to be able to get
17:16around, but you want them to do it safely.
17:19We had just gone to get an idea of what kind of knowledge they're imparting to their drivers before they
17:24hire their vehicles.
17:26We're constantly called to road traffic collisions, and some of them are really horrific, and if that can be minimised
17:33by making sure that tourists who hire bikes are aware of the rules of the road, then I think the
17:39rental companies do have a responsibility in that respect.
17:43You ready? You want to give you a rundown?
17:45This company is making sure tourists understand the safety features of the bike, with obvious prompts to keep the road
17:53rules front of mind.
17:55Officer Rajiv likes what he's observed.
17:58So it was just coming down to the safety of what instruction they're getting, and you did a prime great
18:03example just now with giving them the instruction on how to use the cycle, and that's what I like to
18:07see.
18:09Officer Rajiv and Rachel know that, despite proper instruction, accidents with new arrivals are inevitable.
18:18My mum hired a scooter and literally went straight into that bit of bush.
18:23I went to her, I said, Mum, give it some welly going up the hill, and she went vroom, and
18:26whoosh, straight into the hill.
18:29There's always the risk of someone giving it a little too much gas.
18:46Officers Tyler and Jamila arrested an American cruise ship passenger with what's suspected to be a controlled substance.
18:54Unfortunately, with what's suspected to be cocaine, it is still a criminal offence to have that in your possession.
19:02Officer Tyler learnt at an early age how rewarding policing can be.
19:07Hi, I'm from New Dean Bordenbrook. My granddad was a police officer in the UK first, and so I kind
19:12of grew up hearing all his stories.
19:14As I kind of grew a bit older, I kind of saw more of what the police do, and I
19:20could picture myself being there with them,
19:23and just kind of trying to make a difference in the community and give back.
19:28The passenger arrested claims that he was unaware of the different drug rules in Bermuda compared to the US.
19:353.28. 15.28.
19:38Because he will be here for possibly an extended amount of time,
19:44it's good to just have all his belongings as the cruise ship will be leaving before he is likely to
19:49be let out.
19:50They search his bags for any more controlled substances.
19:54So we just take all his stuff with him.
19:57But nothing is found.
20:10The American tourist is booked in by the custody sergeant.
20:15Do you require a lawyer at this time?
20:18Do you think there's something I need to hire a lawyer for?
20:21I can't tell you whether you should or shouldn't. That's what to me.
20:27Ignorant of Bermuda's drug laws, he's now facing the legal system as a foreigner.
20:32And it's a daunting task.
20:35Um, I would like to just pop around, but I guess I'm in front of my lawyer.
20:39I'm in front of my lawyer. I'm in front of my lawyer.
20:41I don't think I would need this system to work out here.
20:45OK, so what we can do, we can allow you to speak to a duty counsel, which is free of
20:49charge,
20:50that way you can speak to them directly and start a third-hand information coming from your wife.
20:54OK.
20:55The custody rules in Bermuda mean that the man must remove all jewellery for safety reasons.
21:00Can you take that off for me?
21:02I have to take this off?
21:03Yeah.
21:04And he's far from happy about it.
21:06Are you serious?
21:07Yeah.
21:07I've never taken this off. It's religious stuff.
21:10It's not negotiating.
21:12Sorry.
21:14This is worth a lot of money.
21:16It'll be protected.
21:18It might be from your...
21:36It's been a disastrous first day of their holiday for the man and his family.
21:41I know my kids are freaking losing their lives right now.
21:44His wife and children were also removed from the cruise ship.
21:48And with the ship due to depart, they must now remain on the island in a hotel.
21:54Once checked, the suspect is allowed a phone call to his wife.
21:58Hey.
22:00Hi.
22:00Hi.
22:02There's still a chance that I could get up tonight.
22:05Hello?
22:06Well, it's not up to nobody here. It's up to the...
22:12Hi.
22:13Hi.
22:13Hi.
22:13He also speaks to his child.
22:16I love you, buddy.
22:17I love you so much.
22:23So, I'm sure there's a lot of emotions going for him and also his family.
22:27When I do see people getting emotional, it can be one of the more difficult aspects of the job.
22:32You know, you do have to balance that police officer with just, you know, a human being aspect.
22:41Now what we do is we take the evidence that was seized and we input it into our system.
22:47And then we're going to get it taken to the analysis to confirm exactly what it is.
22:52And then a file will be prepared and then he'll be going to court.
22:55While the officers wrap up the shift for the suspect, the reality that his holiday is over is finally sinking
23:02in.
23:12Around the corner from the custody suite is the harbour area, where tourists and locals are experiencing a much more
23:20enjoyable slice of island life.
23:24Reserve officers Sal Bottoletti, Ildrio Francesco and Sherry Tucker are on patrol for the event.
23:31Harbour Nights is a street fair that happens every Wednesday for 18 weeks from May until August.
23:39And it's for all of our tourists. There's food, there's entertainment.
23:44It's a big street fair and everyone has a good time.
23:48The three officers are all reserves who work as volunteers for the Bermuda Police Service.
23:55Officer Sal moved to the island 20 years ago and works in insurance.
24:00I come out here on my nights and weekends when I have free time.
24:04You know, this is something that I've been doing for the last four and a half years now.
24:08And this is something that I love doing.
24:11During the day, Officer Sherry Tucker works in admin for the police.
24:16I became a reserve officer to give back to my community.
24:20To serve and make Bermuda a safer place.
24:24Just take just one picture, just one picture.
24:27Officer Eldrio, like 10% of Bermudians, has Portuguese heritage.
24:32I know all these people here from the Portuguese roots.
24:36These people are working here right behind.
24:40It might be fun on Front Street, but for the three volunteers, there's still work to be done.
24:47Well, we got these two bikes.
24:49If there's any cars or bikes that are parked, we give them out parking tickets.
24:53And I like to write right on the ticket as well as put harbour nights.
24:58So there's no question on why this ticket was issued.
25:04Even though he's giving out a parking fine, Officer Sal approaches ticketing in his unique way.
25:11The ticket used to be $50, now it's $75.
25:15And it's very sticky.
25:16So it's best to put it on the handle.
25:19Because sometimes when they take it off, it leaves some residue behind.
25:25So you don't want to really stick it on the mirror right here.
25:28Because you don't want to ruin their bike.
25:30Visiting tourists are sometimes to blame.
25:33But the officers can often exercise a bit of discretion.
25:36We are a bit more conscious because these are people from another country who do not know.
25:41So sometimes we give them a break.
25:45Tonight's harbour night?
25:46You probably don't know because perhaps you may be a tourist.
25:49So you have five minutes to move this bike off the closed section of Front Street.
25:56Okay, have a nice day.
25:58While Officer Sal gives the tourists some grace, locals get much less leniency.
26:04Is this your vehicle?
26:06Okay, this is a taxi stand right here.
26:08These two vehicles cannot be here.
26:10You can't go any further?
26:12No.
26:13You could go further down there.
26:14You could go up Armory Street.
26:17No, you cannot.
26:18No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
26:20I am telling you, Front Street is closed.
26:23You're right now parked in a taxi stand.
26:25Sometimes they get a little argumentative because at the end of the day, he knows he's in the wrong and
26:31he's moving his vehicle accordingly.
26:35Officer Shari hears over the radio that there's a medical emergency.
26:40I have to go over by the EMTs right now.
26:44The driver just informed me that they have one of the Gombe children, one of the children who is dehydrated.
26:53Police Constable Ms. Gerrit is also patrolling the area and on hand to help.
26:58Okay.
26:59I'll just wait to see what they're going to say and then guide you out if you have to get
27:04out.
27:04So we'll just have to, um, guide them out if they, um...
27:08Oh, I thought somebody was...
27:09Okay, somebody was in there.
27:10Yes, one of these.
27:11The child patient, who's already in the ambulance, needs to get to hospital.
27:16Now, Officer Shari faces the tricky task of clearing the crowded street.
27:21All right.
27:22Can you just...
27:24Can you stand back, please?
27:25Can you get back, please?
27:26Get back.
27:27Get back.
27:28Go back.
27:28Go back.
27:29Go back.
27:30Yeah, back on the left.
27:31Go.
27:31Go to the side.
27:32Back up, please, people.
27:35Back up.
27:36Back up, please.
27:37Open up.
27:38Hello?
27:39Hello?
27:41Can you hear me?
27:42Open up.
27:42The ambulance is behind you.
27:45Come on.
27:47Go to the side, please.
27:48Go to the side.
27:50To the side, please.
27:55I don't know.
27:56People still see lights on, and they still want to walk.
27:59Like, get out of the road.
28:01Get out of the road.
28:02As night falls, the police service, including its volunteer reserves,
28:07continue to work to keep the islanders and the thousands of tourists safe from harm.
28:12Next time, a suspected drug haul at a house.
28:16I can't let nobody else go to jail for that.
28:17A stolen bike chop shop.
28:19Hi, have a look at that.
28:21And some suspicious suitcases at the airport.
28:23The canine has shown interest in your bag.
28:52I'm Gemma and Boys A-I know-destroved prom.
28:53You would like to make fun with us.
28:54I am an enemy driver, who can he?
28:54there's no problem for you.
28:54Can I just leave that in?
28:55Bye!
28:56See ya, always fun as well!
