00:17You've seen buildings collapse in earthquakes.
00:20But this footage from Venezuela shows something that will genuinely stop you in your tracks.
00:26Highways, split clean in two, while you're driving on them.
00:30There are videos circulating right now that are hard to believe.
00:33You're looking at a major highway, the kind with multiple lanes, trucks, normal traffic,
00:39and straight down the middle of it is a deep jagged crack running as far as the camera can see.
00:44In one clip, drivers are swerving around a split so wide you could lose a tire in it.
00:50In another, filmed from inside a moving car, the road just opens up in front of you.
00:56Pavement lifted on one side, exposed earth below. Cars stopped dead.
01:01The roads near Puerto Cabello run through coastal zones, and coastal soil is often saturated with water.
01:08When you shake that kind of soil hard enough and fast enough,
01:11it temporarily stops behaving like solid ground and starts behaving like liquid.
01:17The road above it suddenly has nothing firm underneath it.
01:20It sinks, it tilts, it splits.
01:23Engineers described these splits as a classic sign that the ground itself failed, not just the road surface on top.
01:30And here's why this is actually more consequential than it looks.
01:34Roads aren't just for commuting.
01:36Right now, those cracked highways are the same roads rescue teams need to reach people trapped under rubble.
01:43They're the routes aid supplies travel.
01:45They connect Caracas to the coast, to the ports, to the airport, which is also closed.
01:50Brazil, Ecuador, and other countries are already preparing aid,
01:54but getting that aid in is complicated when the airport is damaged and the roads are fractured.
02:00Venezuela's government has declared a state of emergency and rescue operations are active.
02:05Aftershocks are still hitting.
02:07Officials are warning people to stay off weakened routes entirely.
02:11This is a disaster that is still unfolding,
02:13and the infrastructure damage is going to shape the recovery for months, if not longer.
02:19A road is splitting open while you're on it.
02:21That's not movie stuff.
02:23That's real footage from Venezuela right now.
02:26The earthquake didn't just damage buildings.
02:28It tore apart the very ground people travel on every single day.
