A major political upset in New York is reshaping the Democratic landscape after every congressional candidate endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured victory in key primary races. Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier all emerged victorious, marking a significant win for progressive forces within the party. The results are being viewed as a growing challenge to establishment politics and a boost for candidates critical of current U.S. policy toward Israel. Notably, all three winners rejected support from AIPAC-linked political networks, underscoring a broader debate over money, influence, and the future direction of Democratic politics.

00:05A political earthquake in New York, a clean sweep for the progressive left, and a result
00:12that is already sending shockwaves far beyond the United States. Three congressional primaries,
00:18three victories, and not a single winner accepted support from AIPAC or its affiliated political
00:24networks. New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani is celebrating one of the biggest political
00:30victories of his young career after every candidate he endorsed emerged victorious in
00:36Democratic congressional primaries across New York City. The results are being viewed as a major
00:42test of influence inside the Democratic Party and a significant boost for progressive voices
00:48critical of U.S. policy toward Israel. At the center of the story is Mayor Zoran Mamdani,
00:54the Democratic Socialist who became New York City's youngest mayor in more than a century.
01:00And when you are at those polls, when you are in that booth, and it's just you and your ballot
01:07and that incredible pen from the Board of Elections, it is a sacred moment. It is you alone with
01:15democracy. And it is then that every New Yorker answers a question. What the other side wants
01:21that question to be is which of your neighbors are you most willing to settle? What the other
01:27side wants that question to be is which leaders of today are you willing to delay until tomorrow?
01:34They ask that the tenant of 40 years vote against the tenant of one year.
01:41Mamdani threw his political weight behind three candidates running in highly competitive races.
01:45All three won. The first victory came in New York's 10th Congressional District. Former City Comptroller
01:53Brad Lander defeated incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman in a closely watched contest spanning lower Manhattan
02:00and parts of Brooklyn. Lander campaigned on economic justice, affordable housing, and criticism of
02:07current U.S. support for Israel's military operations. The second victory came in the open 7th District.
02:14State Assemblymember Claire Valdez secured the Democratic nomination after defeating Brooklyn Borough President
02:21Antonio Reynoso. Valdez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, positioned herself as a
02:27progressive alternative focused on labor rights, health care, and foreign policy reform.
02:33The biggest surprise of the night may have come in New York's 13th District. Community organizer and
02:39doctoral student Daryaliza Avila-Chevalier delivered a major upset by defeating five-term incumbent
02:46congressman Adriano Espaillat. The victory instantly elevated Chevalier into the national spotlight and
02:54signaled growing appetite among some Democratic voters for new political voices. What unites all three
03:01winners is not only their progressive platform. Each candidate rejected campaign contributions from
03:07AIPAC and allied groups. All three argued that large outside spending organizations exert too much
03:14influence over U.S. foreign policy and political campaigns. Supporters see the victories as evidence
03:20that grassroots organizing and small-dollar fundraising can compete against well-funded political machines.
03:27The results also reflect the growing strength of pro-Palestinian activism inside parts of the
03:34Democratic coalition. While supporters celebrated the outcome as a victory for independent politics,
03:40critics warned that the results highlight deepening ideological divisions within the party. The reaction
03:47from President Donald Trump was swift. Posting on social media, Trump sarcastically congratulated Mayor
03:53Mamdani while describing the winners as three solid communists. The president argued that the results
03:59demonstrate how far left the Democratic Party has moved. Mamdani's allies, however, see the victories
04:06very differently. They argued that voters rejected establishment politics and embraced candidates focused on
04:13affordability, health care, workers' rights, and a more critical approach to U.S. foreign policy. The broader
04:20implications could be significant. The primaries are likely to influence future debates over Israel,
04:26campaign finance, and the ideological direction of the Democratic Party heading into the next national
04:32election cycle. For Mamdani, the victories strengthen his position as one of the most influential
04:38progressive figures in American politics. And, for political observers across Washington, New York's
04:45primary night may be remembered as a sign that the battle over the future of the Democratic Party is entering
04:51a new
04:51phase. A phase where grassroots candidates, anti-establishment messaging, and foreign policy debates are becoming
04:59increasingly central to the political landscape.
