00:04welcome back now then the late great Steve Irwin aka the crocodile hunter was one of the world's
00:09most famous infectious conservationists who dedicated his life to protecting wildlife well
00:15now his son Robert Irwin is following in his dad's footsteps before we chat to him let's take a look
00:21at how he's continuing his father's legacy hey and welcome to Australia Zoo my mom and dad grew
00:29the zoo from when it was only a really small reptile park to what it is today isn't it incredible
00:34let's
00:35go check it out i always think that if the food isn't good enough for me that it's not good
00:43enough
00:43for the tortoises you want to say so these little tiger cubs just like me and Bindi are the next
00:49generation of Australian Zoo this is how i prefer to feed carrots there you go oh it's a little bit
00:56slobbery that's all right the proctor scene is really special for all of us and uh it's where
01:02we feel closest to dad this was the place he loved more than anywhere else and as a family we
01:08get to
01:09continue that vital crocodile conservation it's such an honor for me getting to follow in dad's footsteps
01:16and continue doing these shows for our thousands of guests every day
01:26oh my goodness oh my goodness me that footage is just brings back so many memories the bowl cut that
01:36that haircut oh my god yeah yeah that was that was iconic that was iconic but um thank you for
01:42that
01:43little trip down memory lane isn't it gorgeous it's a i mean it's in your dna it is you know
01:50i grew up i
01:51literally lived growing up in Australia Zoo and i still do my whole family live and work there we live
01:58and breathe not only this beautiful wildlife sanctuary but also you know our charity wildlife warriors which is
02:04worldwide animal conservation from the time i was you know as you saw knee high to a grasshopper
02:10i've just had this passion to try and you know do as much as i can to continue that that
02:15legacy of
02:16conservation and dad started that oh man your dad as well he was such an icon and it's so lovely
02:23meeting
02:23you and seeing so much of him in you it's really really compelling i was lucky enough to interview your
02:28dad uh is that right 2002 on gntv i wasn't even born yet you weren't no i've got a little
02:35clip have you
02:36this is him talking about he had a very famous crocodile called agro wow oh i had to see this
02:42this is great so it's a bit of a rough and ready clip but this is me chatting to your
02:46dad in 2022
02:4724 years ago i've not changed wow this is of course steve owen the crocodile hunter steve it's a massive
02:54honor to have you in the studio i'm a massive fan i think you might be thanks very much mate
02:57i'm
02:57really appreciate you out there i'm getting really gushy now oh yeah that was that was agro the
03:06crocodile right yeah mate yeah that was agro he's about 15 feet and oh somewhere over 600 kilos and he
03:12means it too like he hates me i could catch him out of the bush you know i rescued his
03:17life that is
03:19so good you know what's crazy we still have agro the crocodile he is at australia zoo he's he's even
03:25bigger now and he's even crankier he is oh yeah so he had it out for my dad because dad
03:32as dad said i
03:33mean he was gonna he was gonna be be killed it was really sad so he actually went in saved
03:36him from the
03:37wild and gave him this beautiful second chance at life and agro no thanks from him he just tried to
03:44kill him every day and now when i jump in he's like sweet more erwin blood let's go he's just
03:49straight
03:49after me so you know i'm keeping the keeping the tradition alive i love it it's special but it must
03:55be
03:55so nice to have all these little pockets of memories because it has it's been two decades since you lost
04:00your dad but i swore i need to be awake to be like but i talk about him every day
04:05absolutely every
04:06single day you know he is still so much a part of everything i do and it's the honor of
04:11my lifetime to
04:12make sure that that spirit of of fun and passion and positivity and and of course wildlife conservation
04:19but but through the lens of kindness like he would always say at his core he would always tell my
04:25sister and i you got to treat every living being the way you wish to be treated and that is
04:29just
04:30something i'll carry with me forever and the fact that i get a new story about him every day like
04:35seeing that footage i've never seen that i feel like i get a little piece of him back when i
04:39see
04:39something like that so thank you well matt he'd be so incredibly proud of what you're doing and how
04:44you're doing it you're here for let me get to what london climate action week that's true talk to me
04:49a
04:49little bit about what it is that you're doing and also you know how do you become best mates with
04:53our
04:53future king i know yeah well i mean his royal highness prince william has has become you know someone that
04:59i i
04:59work with quite a lot through the earthshot prize yeah which is of course his amazing global initiative
05:04to award you know the biggest and brightest solutions in environmental issues and and
05:10basically it's about kind of looking at conservation and all of these big challenges through the lens of
05:17optimism urgent optimism like look at what is being done to make a difference so i'm here at london
05:23climate action week to talk about the wind the amazing earthshot prize finalists i mean some of
05:29them right here in london knoppler i mean they're an incredible plastic alternative that's getting rid of
05:34those single-use plastics making sure we live more sustainably you know i just rode the uh 3000 electric
05:40bus with his royal highness yesterday he spent the day talking about climate change and all sorts there
05:46you know he is a passionate individual when i am around other people who share that passion for
05:52conservation it gets me so excited and he truly is uh i think one of the greatest environmentalists
05:59that we have on the planet he's amazing yeah and also now this personal friendship has developed
06:05between you as well which doesn't sort of strike me as odd at all because when you feel that passionate
06:10about something and you have something like that in common this is a perfect example of what he's like
06:15right i was doing dancing with the stars in america you know bringing the conservation mission to a very
06:20different audience yeah which is great he facetimed me in rehearsals with my dance partner just to wish
06:27me well on all the dancing like he is just i had no idea what's happening they sit me down
06:33and they go
06:33apparently there's a really important call coming through and there he is on the laptop there's prince
06:38william i'm just like oh hey mate thank you so much this is awesome so he is just a down
06:43-to-earth human
06:44being and someone who who knows the importance of conservation reaching different audiences does
06:50that mean you've got his number in your phone no in the in the on speed dial
06:54would you save him
06:59but you're absolutely right and actually talking him talking about it him making it very accessible
07:04he's passionate and also looking at it in terms of sort of the scientific uh creation and and and
07:13genius ingenuity to solve these problems as well it makes it approachable i think if we are going to
07:18unite against the big issues that face our planet we have to feel like there is a goal that we
07:24can work
07:24towards yeah conservation i mean i i talk about this with young people all the time they come up to
07:29me and
07:29say i want to do something but it feels like this giant mountain to climb how do i approach it
07:34but
07:35the earthshot prize what we do in australia at australia zoo it's all about creating this worldwide
07:40community so that people feel like they have a community they have a group young people feel like
07:45they're not alone and it makes it approachable when you're seeing the solutions you're seeing
07:50people being rewarded and seeing these ingenious solutions that the earthshot prize award
07:55being scaled up globally it makes us feel like okay there's hope well it's also about celebrating
08:02those little wins so the enormity of the problem doesn't kind of create an inertia where nobody does
08:08anything oh yeah i mean i look at there's a finalist called altandala they brought back the saiga
08:12antelope from 20 000 almost extinct to now in the millions you know you look at things like that
08:18in australia through what we do we've conserved almost half a million acres of of protected land
08:23through the earthshot prize 58 million hectares of land and oceans protected you look at these facts
08:29and figures and you go all right it's the work is happening we got i think you said this this
08:35week
08:35there's reason to be optimistic despite the fact we're sitting here and we're about to hit record
08:39temperatures i mean you can see those you can't argue against what what we are all experiencing yeah
08:44reason to be optimistic there is and and there always is and i i think if we get into this
08:49mindset where we just look at all of the doom and gloom and we get caught up in this oh
08:55it's all
08:55too big that's a dangerous mindset to get into we really have to make sure we remember if we unify
09:01if we can agree to come together toward this common goal we can absolutely make that change and i feel
09:07like my job is to do that through through passion and fun just like my dad did and joining forces
09:13with
09:14prince william with the airshot prize i was not on my bingo card but honestly it is such a privilege
09:21and uh i love it here i i love the uk i love london i uh the wildlife is very
09:27different here right
09:28no crocodiles no venomous snakes but you've got squirrels i don't have squirrels in australia so i'm
09:33like this is awesome they love mission impossible squirrels there's squirrels and then there's a whole
09:38other level oh my gosh no i love it here it's awesome we have less things that can kill you
09:44yes i think that's what it takes when i go to australia you have to be careful because the insects
09:48everything everything's either venomous or has a pouch it's very it's very it's very strange but i
09:53love our aussie wildlife they're great so nice to see you thank you for coming on absolutely real
09:59great thank you guys you are and as i say you're i can see that you're absolutely so proud of
