Kenya to charge students for murder in deadly dormitory fire

Kenyan prosecutors said Tuesday they will charge a number of students with murder of 16 schoolmates in the burning of a dormitory in late May that shocked the east African country.

00:1016 pupils, aged between 15 and 18, died and 132 are injured in a fire that broke out shortly after
00:18midnight on May 28 in a dormitory at the Otomishigal School in Gilgil, about 100 kilometres north of Nairobi.
00:26Nine pupils from the school, which mainly cater for the children of police officers, are still in police custody.
00:33Most of them were arrested the day after the tragedy on charges of arson.
00:39The spokesperson for the prosecutor's office said the suspect will likely be charged in a court on Wednesday, but declined
00:46to say how many will be charged or provide details because they are minors.
00:51The charged suspect will each face 16 counts of murder.
00:57Kenya has already experienced countless deadly dormitory fires, with no fewer than 47 such fires recorded in 2026 alone by
