00:03back in 2009 astronomers noticed something a bit odd in the night sky a star which had recently
00:09increased in luminosity suddenly disappeared it was an odd observation as experts expected the
00:15star which they believed was going supernova to explode instead it was gone now using the
00:20james webb space telescope they might finally have the answer as to where the heck it went
00:24the star in question is called n6946-bh1 and astronomers initially believed it failed when
00:30it began to supernova instead becoming a black hole however new data from the new telescope has
00:35revealed an infrared light source right where the star used to be while this source could be the
00:40remnants of a star being sucked into a newly minted black hole the find is more consistent with a
00:45supernova explosion one we didn't observe occurring and it gets weirder astronomers actually found
00:50signs of three infrared remnant sources leading to an entirely new theory rather than a supernova of
00:56a single star they now theorize it was actually the merger of an entire dual star system with the
01:02sudden increase in luminosity likely being due to the stars coming together to form a single one then
01:07dimming once completed
