00:23There are certain things that merit an immediate answer.
00:31A photo, a few words on social media, and suddenly one of the most powerful friendships
00:37in Western politics is falling apart on camera.
00:41She begged me.
00:43That's what the US President said about Italy's Prime Minister, Georgia Maloney.
00:48Her reply?
00:49Neither I nor Italy ever beg.
00:52Welcome to the Trump-Maloney breakup.
00:55And trust me, it did not happen overnight.
00:59Rewind to January 2025.
01:02Maloney is one of the first world leaders to visit Trump at Mar-a-Lago after his election
01:08win, ahead of almost anyone in Europe.
01:11Trump calls her a fantastic woman.
01:13They watch a documentary together over dinner like old friends.
01:17A few weeks later, when Trump is sworn in as the 47th president, there's only one EU leader
01:24sitting in the front row of his inauguration.
01:27Guess who?
01:28For a while, Maloney plays the role of bridge builder, the European leader who can actually
01:33pick up the phone and talk to Trump when nobody else can.
01:37But bridges have limits.
01:39By January 2026, Trump is talking about the US taking control of Greenland and threatening
01:47tariffs on any country that objects.
01:50Well, I don't think we can respect too much.
01:53We have to have it.
01:54They have to have this done.
01:56They can't protect it.
01:58Denmark, they're wonderful people.
02:00And I know the leaders are very good people, but they don't even go there.
02:05And, you know, because the boat went there 500 years ago and then left, that doesn't give
02:10you title to property.
02:12So we'll be talking about it with the various people.
02:16We've had tremendous success and, you know, I've done more for NATO than anybody else.
02:23I don't think you'd have NATO right now.
02:25I got them to go 5% and pay as opposed to 2% and not pay.
02:30I've done more than any other American president to NATO by far.
02:35And we'll see how that goes, but Greenland is very important.
02:39Maloney publicly calls the tariff threat a mistake and insists Italy will not back a forced takeover.
02:46Then comes March.
02:48The US wants to use an Italian airbase in Sicily to launch operations toward the Middle East.
02:55Maloney says no, not without approval from Italy's own parliament.
02:59And then, the Pope.
03:02When Pope Leo XIV criticizes the US-Israel campaign against Iran, Trump lashes out at
03:09the Pope, and Maloney defends the Pope, calling Trump's attack unacceptable.
03:14Trump's response?
03:16I thought she had courage, but I was wrong.
03:19The bridge is starting to crack.
03:21Fast forward to June 2026, the G7 summit in France.
03:26Somewhere between the handshakes and the group photos, something shifts.
03:31Because days later, Trump tells an Italian TV channel that Maloney begged him for a picture,
03:37and that she was probably happy he even spoke to her.
03:41Maloney doesn't wait.
03:43She posts a video, visibly frustrated.
03:45I don't understand why the President of the United States behaves like this toward his
03:50allies.
03:52Some things deserve an immediate answer.
03:55Donald Trump's declarations are totally invented.
03:58They are, frankly, alive.
04:00I don't know why the President of the United States behave like this with his own allies.
04:05It's not the first time it happens.
04:07I can only say that I'm sorry to say that he doesn't have the same determination with
04:11the Western enemies, with the United States, with leadership, with which, instead, it's
04:17more condescending.
04:18But one thing you have to remember is that I and Italy never do it.
04:22Then Trump goes further, claiming Maloney's popularity back home is dropping because she
04:30refused to back the U.S. strikes on Iran, and that she's now quietly trying to repair
04:36ties with Washington.
04:37Maloney's response?
04:39Short.
04:40Sharp.
04:40Final.
04:41My popularity is none of your concern.
04:45The fallout is immediate.
04:47Italy's foreign minister canceled a planned trip to Washington, calling Trump's comments
04:52serious and offensive, not just to Maloney, but to all of Italy.
04:57Two leaders who once shared dinner and documentaries at Mar-a-Lago are now trading public jobs over
05:04a handshake photo.
05:06Underneath it, though, this was never really about a picture.
05:09It's about Greenland, Iran, a pope, a military base, and a question every ally in Washington's
05:16orbit is now quietly asking themselves.
05:19How much can you disagree with Donald Trump and still call yourself a friend?
