Suddenly (1954) is a tense film noir thriller starring Frank Sinatra in a chilling against-type role as a hired assassin plotting to assassinate the President of the United States. The story unfolds in the small, quiet town of Suddenly, California, where Sinatra's character and his accomplices take over a family's home, using it as a vantage point to carry out their deadly plan as the presidential motorcade approaches. As tension builds within the household, a local sheriff and the family must find a way to outwit the assassins before it's too late. Directed by Lewis Allen, the film is celebrated for Sinatra's intense and menacing performance, far removed from his usual charming screen persona.

00:18:58I don't want Pitch to miss the ballgame after missing the movie and everything.
00:19:02All right, boy.
00:19:03Come on, get ready to plug this set in while I hold this screw down.
00:19:06We'll see what happens.
00:19:07Okay.
00:19:08Dad, are you sure you know what you're doing?
00:19:10Ellen, please.
00:19:11I know, but it says on the back of that that they're 5,000 volts, and that's dangerous.
00:19:15Ellen, will you please stop being a woman?
00:19:21Ready, boy?
00:19:21Plug in.
00:19:26Dad!
00:19:27Dad, are you all right?
00:19:28Well, I guess I'm all right.
00:19:30It could scare the pants off me, that's all.
00:19:32Golly, look at this!
00:19:33I guess maybe you better call Jud, huh?
00:19:35Oh, honestly.
00:19:37That was a close call, boy.
00:19:40How much is 5,000 volts?
00:19:42Enough.
00:19:43To kill you?
00:19:44Well, it'll probably pick you up and toss you across the room.
00:19:47That is, unless you were standing in a puddle of water, and then you'd be grounded.
00:19:49And if you were grounded, it'd kill you dead or in a doornail.
00:19:52Will it hurt?
00:19:53Like blazers.
00:19:54You stay away from that set now.
00:19:56And stay away from those wall plugs.
00:19:58Don't monkey with electricity unless you know what you're doing.
00:20:01Why did you, Grandpa?
00:20:03You got me there, boy.
00:20:06I'll get her.
00:20:08Judd says he'll be up in a little while.
00:20:09I'm sorry.
00:20:12Honestly.
00:20:14Yes?
00:20:15Mrs. Benson?
00:20:16That's right.
00:20:17Is your husband at home?
00:20:18My husband?
00:20:19No, I'm a widow.
00:20:21What I should have asked was, are you the owner of this house?
00:20:24No, I'm not.
00:20:24It belongs to my father-in-law.
00:20:26What is it you want?
00:20:27I'm John Barron, special agent.
00:20:29Federal Bureau of Investigation.
00:20:31These are my men.
00:20:32Do you suppose I could have a few words with Mr. Benson?
00:20:36Just a moment.
00:20:37Won't you come in?
00:20:38Dad!
00:20:40Oh, how are you, gents?
00:20:42John Barron, special agent.
00:20:45For heaven's sake, FBI.
00:20:47May we come in?
00:20:48Why, sure, sure.
00:20:49Come right in.
00:20:50Come right in.
00:20:51Make yourself at home.
00:20:52Thanks.
00:20:52Not at all.
00:20:53I get quite a kick out of this.
00:20:54Used to be with the Treasury Department myself.
00:20:56Really?
00:20:56Back in the old days.
00:20:58Collective and total revenue, eh?
00:21:00Tax collector, not on your life.
00:21:01Secret service.
00:21:02You don't say.
00:21:03Grandpa was president in Coolidge's bodyguard.
00:21:06You don't say.
00:21:07Yep.
00:21:07Back in 1928.
00:21:09Youngest retirement in the service.
00:21:10Con of my heart.
00:21:11Not heart.
00:21:12Trouble, you understand.
00:21:13An accident on one of Cal's fishing trips.
00:21:15A hunter.
00:21:16Got the slug right here.
00:21:18Say, that's a nasty one.
00:21:20How come you're still alive?
00:21:21I don't know.
00:21:22Lodged in my heart.
00:21:23They took it out.
00:21:24Had to take it easy, so they'll retire me.
00:21:25You're lucky.
00:21:27Lucky you're still, if it hadn't hit me.
00:21:28I'm going to be in the Secret Service someday.
00:21:30Thought you was going to be a sheriff like Todd.
00:21:33Squirts like you are supposed to grow up and be president.
00:21:35Name is Pidge, Mr. Barron.
00:21:36Glad to meet you, Pidge.
00:21:37I ain't a squirt.
00:21:39Mr. Barron, what did you want to see us about?
00:21:41Is something wrong?
00:21:43Nothing wrong yet, Mrs. Benson, but there might be.
00:21:45We're just checking.
00:21:46On us?
00:21:47On the house.
00:21:48Do you mind if we have a look around?
00:21:49Help yourself.
00:21:50But what I want to know...
00:21:51is going to have a look around
00:21:51with or without your permission, Mr. Benson.
00:21:53It's an emergency.
00:21:55Check it.
00:22:05There must be something the matter.
00:22:07Anyone else live here besides you three?
00:22:09No.
00:22:12Anyone been by here today?
00:22:14No.
00:22:14Just the usual routine.
00:22:15Willie Harris left the milk.
00:22:17What's this all about, Mr. Barron?
00:22:18Just being careful.
00:22:19I'll explain later.
00:22:23Two bedrooms, one bathroom.
00:22:24All clear.
00:22:26One here.
00:22:27Just like they said.
00:22:32Kitchen, back pantry, back door.
00:22:33Stairs go downhill to garage under kitchen.
00:22:35Cellar door and hall.
00:22:37Clear.
00:22:37Car in the garage.
00:22:40Look at this for a setup.
00:22:46I'm sorry, folks, but I'm afraid
00:22:47we're going to have to hang around for a while.
00:22:49Why?
00:22:50What's the matter?
00:22:50Don't be alarmed.
00:22:51There's nothing wrong.
00:22:52Well, of course there's something wrong.
00:22:53The FBI doesn't pay us a visit for the heck of it.
00:22:55Well, I won't stay.
00:22:56I'll take pictures of...
00:22:58Nobody leaves the house until we do.
00:22:59Why not?
00:23:00What's happened?
00:23:01Look, just go about your business
00:23:02like it was any other Saturday afternoon.
00:23:04Read your papers.
00:23:05Look at your TV.
00:23:07Anything you want.
00:23:08that nobody leaves the house.
00:23:12Something fishy about all this.
00:23:14It's official business.
00:23:16What sort of official business?
00:23:17Mr. Benson, as a former agent of the Secret Service,
00:23:20you should understand.
00:23:21Either I'm getting old and stupid
00:23:23or else I'm...
00:23:24At 5 p.m. this afternoon,
00:23:25the President of the United States
00:23:26arrives in town on a special.
00:23:28What?
00:23:30Golly!
00:23:30The President?
00:23:32Well, that's different.
00:23:33You mean to say the President's
00:23:35going to get off the train here?
00:23:36That's right.
00:23:37Golly, Gramps,
00:23:37you've got to go down and see it.
00:23:38We just got to.
00:23:39The President?
00:23:40Why, that's the greatest thing
00:23:41ever happened to this town.
00:23:42We go down and see it, Gramps, can we?
00:23:44Sorry, kid.
00:23:45No.
00:23:47Benny, bring in the gear.
00:23:49Put the car out back.
00:23:50Bart, you see the back door is locked tight
00:23:52and check the cellar to be sure.
00:23:56I still don't understand, Mr. Benson.
00:23:59It should be obvious to you
00:24:00that if anybody wanted to kill the President,
00:24:02he could do a beautiful job of it
00:24:04right from this window of yours.
00:24:06But the love of Mike,
00:24:07that may be true,
00:24:08but you don't think that Ellie and me...
00:24:09Of course not.
00:24:10But we have to remain here
00:24:11to protect you and the President
00:24:12from somebody else who might.
00:24:15Oh.
00:24:31Carney.
00:24:32Yeah?
00:24:33Is this all routine?
00:24:35Seems to me to be kind of overboard.
00:24:36I mean, all this checking and everything
00:24:37as though you expected this town to...
00:24:39Sheriff.
00:24:40Have you noticed any strangers in town
00:24:41during the past week?
00:24:43No.
00:24:44Are you sure?
00:24:45Sure, I'm sure.
00:24:46I know everybody in this bird.
00:24:48The only strangers we get are tourists.
00:24:50You know, we get them all the time.
00:24:51Stop it for gas, it by D, that's all.
00:24:53We want to know from either you or your deputies
00:24:55the minute any stranger doesn't keep going through.
00:24:58Then this isn't routine.
00:25:00No, it isn't.
00:25:02Can you tell me?
00:25:04The Los Angeles police picked up a small-time stool pigeon
00:25:06night before last, shot through the lungs,
00:25:08left for dead.
00:25:09Spiley bitters.
00:25:10Before he died, he told them something was up.
00:25:13What do you mean something was up?
00:25:15An assassination attempt.
00:25:17Well, can you believe that?
00:25:19In our business, we can't afford not to.
00:25:21I mean the tip of a dying stool pigeon.
00:25:23This stoolie seemed very proud of being an American
00:25:25before he kicked off.
00:25:28Meaning, crime is crime, but this is something else again.
00:25:31Right.
00:25:32So, we can't take any chances.
00:25:34Let's go.
00:25:39Can we see the present with Grandpa?
00:25:42Can we, Mom?
00:25:43No, Pidge, we have to stay here.
00:25:45You can watch him from here.
00:25:46But I want to get up close.
00:25:47Well, use your telescope, boy.
00:25:49Bring him right up the eye.
00:25:50Ah.
00:25:51Sorry, Pidge.
00:25:52No dice.
00:25:53Back to a lock.
00:25:54How about the phone in the kitchen?
00:25:55Want me to yank it?
00:25:56No, we don't change the pattern at all.
00:25:58Give Benny a hand.
00:26:03Mr. Baron, uh, something I don't understand.
00:26:06I was in the service myself.
00:26:07So you told me.
00:26:09And though we made every precautionary check,
00:26:10we never went to extremes like this unless, uh...
00:26:13Unless you were tipped that there was to be
00:26:14an attempted assassination.
00:26:15You don't mean it.
00:26:16I mean it.
00:26:17But you're FBI.
00:26:19Secret Service is responsible for the safety of the president.
00:26:21We're using everybody this trip, Mr. Benson.
00:26:24Have a look down there.
00:26:27State troopers, your local law enforcement agencies, and us.
00:26:31You don't know if old Dane Carney is down there, do you?
00:26:33He and I worked together in the old days.
00:26:35He's chief of the presidential staff now.
00:26:38That's confidential information.
00:26:41This is a terrible thing.
00:26:43That's your worry, Mr. Benson?
00:26:45Of course it's my worry.
00:26:46I'm an American, ain't I?
00:26:47It's everybody's worry.
00:26:49All right.
00:26:50Somebody's driving him to the house.
00:26:51Who is it?
00:26:55It's Todd.
00:26:55He's the sheriff, Mr. Barron.
00:26:58There's someone with him.
00:26:59Who's with him?
00:27:00Well, I don't know.
00:27:01I've never seen him before.
00:27:02Well, for the love of Mike.
00:27:04What?
00:27:05Well, with an old Dane Carney, gray than an old shirt, and red in the face of never.
00:27:12Hi, Pop.
00:27:13Got an old friend of yours here.
00:27:14Dan, you dirty old Irishman.
00:27:15Dan Carney.
00:27:16Oh, Pop, how are you?
00:27:17It's great to see you.
00:27:18Hey, why aren't you dead?
00:27:19Oh, old buzzers like me live forever.
00:27:21Hey, old Hawkeye, you're getting bald.
00:27:23Well, just what do you expect after 25 years?
00:27:25Come on in.
00:27:26Come on in.
00:27:27Make yourself to home.
00:27:28This is my daughter-in-law.
00:27:29How do you do?
00:27:29This is my grandson, Pidge.
00:27:30Hiya, Pidge.
00:27:31Pidge, this is Mr. Carney.
00:27:32Secret Service.
00:27:33He guards the president.
00:27:34Hi, Mr. Barron.
00:27:36Who?
00:27:37Barron.
00:27:37Oh, you didn't know.
00:27:38You boys got here ahead of you.
00:27:46Shut up!
00:27:49Ah!
00:27:50Ah!
00:28:00One sound from the kid, Pop, and he's dead.
00:28:26The train muffled it.
00:28:29Get rid of him.
00:28:32Put him in the cellar.
00:28:33You better take the rug with you.
00:28:34It's a giveaway.
00:28:41You get the message, brave boy?
00:28:43Mom!
00:28:44Mom!
00:28:45Pidge, now you've got to be still.
00:28:47No noise.
00:28:50You stink!
00:28:51Pidge, shut up!
00:28:53Guts.
00:28:54He's only eight.
00:28:56Lots of guts.
00:28:59Mom.
00:29:02No trouble with you.
00:29:03You're all busted up.
00:29:13All right.
00:29:15Take care of her.
00:29:17You got it, now.
00:29:18Let's be practical.
00:29:20I don't want any more shooting around here.
00:29:22I want it nice and quiet and cozy.
00:29:26Now get her up and bring her around and explain to her that one phony and she's got a kid
00:29:29with his throat cut.
00:29:32Doesn't make much noise that way.
00:29:35The same goes for you, too.
00:29:36Anybody steps out of line, the boy.
00:29:41That's simple enough.
00:29:44Ellen.
00:29:46Ellen, listen to me.
00:29:47Ellen, pay attention.
00:29:49Now listen to me.
00:29:50I don't look like that.
00:29:51Everybody is all right.
00:29:53You've got to get a hold of yourself.
00:29:55No matter what happens, you've got to hang on.
00:29:57If you scream or make one false move, he'll murder the boy.
00:30:01You understand?
00:30:02He'll murder Pidge.
00:30:08Did you hear him, lady?
00:30:13All right, all right, inside.
00:30:14We'll get a long time to wait.
00:30:15Relax.
00:30:19Move the kitchen table in front of the window.
00:30:23All right, sit down, sit down.
00:30:25Look at your TV.
00:30:26They're working.
00:30:27Well, work him over then.
00:30:28Fix him up.
00:30:29Don't sit there waiting to blow your car.
00:30:31Keep yourselves occupied.
00:30:32I've got to think.
00:30:44Todd, Todd, are you badly hurt?
00:30:46Bullet hit the bone broken, I guess.
00:30:47He's bled a lot.
00:30:48We need a doctor.
00:30:49Look at his face.
00:30:52Tell her, Pop.
00:30:53You're the doctor, Ellen.
00:30:55We can't have no doctor.
00:30:56We can't set a broken arm.
00:30:58Tough.
00:31:00Can you?
00:31:01Me?
00:31:02Straighten his fracture.
00:31:05You couldn't take it.
00:31:08You straightened it.
00:31:10Hold on, brave boy.
00:31:23Tie it up.
00:31:27May we take him into the bedroom?
00:31:29Sure.
00:31:31But the boy stays here.
00:31:41And leave the door open.
00:31:47All right, let's go to work.
00:32:09Pop, we've got to do something.
00:32:11Yeah, I know, I know.
00:32:12But what, what?
00:32:13They've got Pidge.
00:32:14No, none of us count.
00:32:15Not even Pidge.
00:32:16We haven't got a chance.
00:32:17As long as we're alive, we've got a chance.
00:32:19We've got to find a flaw in his plan.
00:32:21We'll think of something.
00:32:23Pop, haven't you got a gun?
00:32:26Gun?
00:32:30Yeah, right in the drawer.
00:32:31My gun.
00:32:38Is it loaded?
00:32:39No, I'm killing it.
00:32:41I hid the cartridge in the counterpitch.
00:32:45You're a dirty, lousy gangster!
00:32:48Leave him alone, Benny.
00:32:49Did you hear what he said?
00:32:50Yeah, I heard what he said.
00:32:51He'd be looking at too much television.
00:32:53He ain't a bad squirt.
00:32:54Just tell him to shut up!
00:32:56Sure, sure.
00:32:59This thing's metal.
00:33:01Steel, tough, chrome legs.
00:33:04I figured wood.
00:33:05No difference.
00:33:06Use the brackets.
00:33:07Screw them to the leg and then to the floor.
00:33:08That way the table won't dance.
00:33:10You're a coward!
00:33:10You're a bunch of cowards!
00:33:12And you're getting too fresh.
00:33:15So button it.
00:33:19Johnny, why all the trouble?
00:33:20Big deal.
00:33:20This is a lot of work.
00:33:21Do it, Benny.
00:33:22But, Johnny, I don't see why we...
00:33:23Let's do it, Benny!
00:33:26Once you get the gun anchored,
00:33:28you got a solid base.
00:33:29You'll see when we get to it.
00:33:31This gun's got a heavy recoil.
00:33:33It won't stand still.
00:33:36And we got just three seconds
00:33:37to nail the president.
00:33:41And I don't want the table
00:33:42to shimmy when we get to it.
00:33:43Oh, a Tommy gun would do just as good.
00:33:45The Tommy gun stinks.
00:33:47No accuracy.
00:33:48No punch.
00:33:49Might as well use a revolver.
00:33:52This is the gun.
00:33:55When I was in the army.
00:33:56So I wasn't in the army.
00:33:58Tighter. Tighter.
00:34:01Pop, you fired those cartridges yet?
00:34:03Not yet.
00:34:04This is quite a gun, Benny.
00:34:06Quite a gun.
00:34:06And I did a lot of chopping
00:34:08in the war with a baby like this.
00:34:11A lot of chopping.
00:34:15You're wrong about me, Pidge.
00:34:17Being a coward.
00:34:19Last war, I got a silver star.
00:34:23North the casino.
00:34:24Pocket of resistance.
00:34:27I killed 27 men.
00:34:28All by myself.
00:34:30I won a silver star.
00:34:32Metal.
00:34:33I have stolen.
00:34:39They're hurting Pidge.
00:34:40All right, take it easy.
00:34:41Take it easy.
00:34:42Johnny, take it easy.
00:34:46Johnny, relax.
00:34:48For the love of Mike,
00:34:49what's a silver star?
00:34:50I won it.
00:34:54Okay, Johnny.
00:34:56Okay, you won it.
00:35:04I got him.
00:35:07They've been there a long time.
00:35:09Yeah, get him back in here.
00:35:14What are you all trying to pull?
00:35:18All of you inside.
00:35:22Come on, come on.
00:35:28Feeling better?
00:35:30Yeah.
00:35:30You're lucky.
00:35:31He didn't mean the wing,
00:35:32you meant to blow your brains out.
00:35:33He's a bad shot.
00:35:35Yeah, but I'm not.
00:35:36So maybe you better sit down
00:35:37and stay there.
00:35:38That way you'll be safer
00:35:39for everybody.
00:35:40You got that duty look
00:35:41in your eye.
00:35:42I've seen it up on the line.
00:35:44The line?
00:35:45You up on the line?
00:35:46Some other time.
00:35:47Down.
00:35:55Bart, you fool!
00:35:56His car's out front.
00:35:57Put it in the garage, quick.
00:36:00I have to think of everything.
00:36:02Oh, great.
00:36:03Just great.
00:36:04Might as well advertise.
00:36:07There's a close one.
00:36:15Hop in here.
00:36:25See what time it is?
00:36:28All right, suppose you tell me
00:36:29what happens in this house
00:36:30on a Saturday afternoon
00:36:31between four and five.
00:36:33Pattern.
00:36:36Smart guy.
00:36:38Sure.
00:36:39And we don't break that pattern.
00:36:41We're here for a reason
00:36:42and if we break it,
00:36:42we might blow the deal, you know?
00:36:43Mario slings the paper
00:36:45over the fence
00:36:46around 4.30 or so.
00:36:48Delivery boy.
00:36:49Does he come in?
00:36:51Anyone else?
00:36:53Sorry, Hammer went up
00:36:54to mountain hunting
00:36:54Jackrabbits.
00:36:55He'll be buying his way back.
00:36:57Will he stop?
00:36:59Not unless he's got
00:37:00something to brag about.
00:37:02Anybody else?
00:37:03Nobody.
00:37:06Anybody know that you
00:37:07and the other guy
00:37:07were coming up here?
00:37:09That's an interesting question.
00:37:11What's the interesting answer?
00:37:13You guess.
00:37:14Tell him, Todd.
00:37:17Sheriff, if you think
00:37:18I have any qualms
00:37:19about killing this kid,
00:37:20you couldn't be more wrong.
00:37:22The thing about killing him
00:37:24or you or her or him
00:37:26is that I wouldn't
00:37:26be getting paid for it.
00:37:30And I don't like
00:37:31giving anything away for free.
00:37:33Neither do I.
00:37:35Including information.
00:37:37Your guts are showing
00:37:38all over the place, brave boy.
00:37:40No, no.
00:37:41Not me.
00:37:42I'm scared.
00:37:43You see, the way I figure it,
00:37:45Baron, I'm a dead man anyway.
00:37:47So's the boy.
00:37:47So's Ellen.
00:37:48So's Pop.
00:37:49It's just a question
00:37:50an hour later.
00:37:51And if it gives the president
00:37:52a bit of an edge,
00:37:53why, then we get it now.
00:37:54They won't hurt us.
00:37:55They won't hurt Pidge.
00:37:55He said so.
00:37:56Because it's convenient, Ellen.
00:37:58You think these crumbs
00:37:59would kill the president
00:38:00and then take off,
00:38:01leaving us behind
00:38:02to identify them?
00:38:02You said you wouldn't hurt Pidge.
00:38:04Sure, sure.
00:38:05And I meant it.
00:38:06Don't listen to this guy.
00:38:08He's just being brave
00:38:09with your kid's life.
00:38:10I know guys like that
00:38:11in the army.
00:38:13We're just doing a job,
00:38:14that's all.
00:38:15Identifying us
00:38:16is not involved.
00:38:18By 7 o'clock tonight,
00:38:19we'll be out of the country
00:38:20and you'll never see us again.
00:38:21Tell him, Todd.
00:38:22Tell him.
00:38:22Never mind, lady.
00:38:23We'll just assume
00:38:24that they knew
00:38:25he was coming up here.
00:38:26so that if somebody else
00:38:27comes up to check on him,
00:38:28you can tell him
00:38:29the sheriff and his friend
00:38:30were here,
00:38:30but they had to go
00:38:31someplace else.
00:38:33That's all.
00:38:34I have to go to the bathroom.
00:38:40Go with him, Bart.
00:38:43I don't need any help.
00:38:45Come on, come on.
00:38:48Okay, table's screwed down.
00:38:50All right.
00:38:50Get the tripod up there,
00:38:51drill a hole in each leg,
00:38:52bolt the tripod to the table,
00:38:54put it center in front of the window.
00:38:57I thought I told you to sit down.
00:38:59Just stretching my legs.
00:39:00You're a very careful man.
00:39:03That's right.
00:39:04Plan on everything, huh?
00:39:06Sheriff, the first man
00:39:07to shoot to the moon
00:39:08in a rocket will take pains, too.
00:39:09Of course,
00:39:10that's never been done before.
00:39:11Neither is this.
00:39:12Doesn't that worry you?
00:39:14Haven't got time to worry.
00:39:16I just make my plans
00:39:17and carry them on.
00:39:19That's what John Wilkes Booth thought, too.
00:39:22Booth?
00:39:23I'm no actor.
00:39:25Busted my leg on a stage
00:39:26so I can yell down with the tyrants.
00:39:28If Booth wasn't such a ham,
00:39:29he might have made it.
00:39:31He got pretty far at that, though.
00:39:34The guy who killed Garfield
00:39:35didn't make it, either.
00:39:36Him?
00:39:37He didn't plan anything.
00:39:39Just took a lucky shot,
00:39:40strictly left-handed,
00:39:41just like McKinley.
00:39:42and Zangara got the cheer
00:39:44for his try at Roosevelt.
00:39:46He had to try it in a crowd.
00:39:49I hate crowds.
00:39:51So nobody ever made it?
00:39:54Up till here.
00:39:57I'm just a guy making a living.
00:40:00And I think you've stretched long enough
00:40:02as you were.
00:40:08Bart, take over Benny's work.
00:40:10Okay.
00:40:10Benny.
00:40:11Yeah, Johnny.
00:40:14Go downtown,
00:40:15see what's going on down there,
00:40:16especially the station plan.
00:40:17Leave the car here.
00:40:19Why me?
00:40:20Because Wheeler can fly a plane,
00:40:21and you can't.
00:40:22Oh, but me, I'm expendable, huh?
00:40:24No, I just don't want anything
00:40:25to happen to Wheeler.
00:40:26Well, why can't I take the car?
00:40:27Because if they nail you, Benny,
00:40:28we need the car to get to the plane.
00:40:30Johnny, that place is crawling with cops.
00:40:31You're getting paid, ain't you?
00:40:33Yeah?
00:40:34You can't say you ain't getting enough.
00:40:38I'll be back.
00:40:40Johnny.
00:40:42Look, nice and steady,
00:40:43just like you wanted it.
00:40:53Open the curtain.
00:41:01Trap.
00:41:03Big, beautiful, booby trap.
00:41:06You can't do this.
00:41:07You can't do it.
00:41:13You're wrong, lady.
00:41:18Take a look.
00:41:22Come on.
00:41:23Take a look.
00:41:38I can do it,
00:41:39and I'm going to do it.
00:41:42But you're an American citizen.
00:41:45Sure.
00:41:46And one minute after five,
00:41:47I'm going to be a very rich American citizen.
00:41:49you'll never get away with it.
00:41:51Shut up.
00:41:55I've got a stomachache.
00:41:56Take a pill.
00:41:57Maybe the old man's right, Johnny.
00:41:58It's a terrible thing.
00:41:59A terrible thing.
00:42:00Turn it off, will you?
00:42:01It's just another man.
00:42:02A man.
00:42:02But the president.
00:42:06Yeah.
00:42:07Yeah, I've never killed a president before.
00:42:13Who's that?
00:42:14It's Judd Kelly.
00:42:16Television set went on the blink.
00:42:17Ellen sent it for him to come and fix it
00:42:18so that the boy could watch the ball game.
00:42:20Why'd you tell me?
00:42:20Well, we simply forgot, that's all.
00:42:23He's a harmless boy, Baron.
00:42:24Don't hurt him.
00:42:25Okay.
00:42:26But if you cross me up.
00:42:27He won't.
00:42:27He won't.
00:42:30All right, Pop.
00:42:31You got the ball.
00:42:35Let him in, but watch it.
00:42:38Ellen?
00:42:39We got to keep this man talking.
00:42:41Why?
00:42:42Why?
00:42:42Because that's his weakness.
00:42:44Sooner or later, he'll drop his guard.
00:42:46We got to find a way to get Pop's gun.
00:42:48Hi, Pop.
00:42:49What's new?
00:42:49Hello, Judd.
00:42:50Think they'd better get up and fix your rig
00:42:51before you electrocuted yourself.
00:42:53Come on in.
00:42:55Todd, what happened to you?
00:42:57Ask him.
00:42:58Same thing will happen to you
00:43:00unless you do exactly as you're told.
00:43:02You're kidding.
00:43:04Is that real?
00:43:05It's real, all right.
00:43:07What's your name?
00:43:08Judd Kelly.
00:43:09What are you doing here?
00:43:10I came to fix the television set.
00:43:12What's up?
00:43:13All right, Bart.
00:43:14Case.
00:43:15I don't have any dough.
00:43:16If that's what you want.
00:43:18What is this, a stick-up?
00:43:20Yeah, that's right.
00:43:22It's a stick-up.
00:43:23You'll never get away with it.
00:43:24Go over and sit down, buster.
00:43:26Take your luggage with you.
00:43:27You too.
00:43:28Down.
00:43:33I don't take it.
00:43:34Did they rob the bank?
00:43:36What's the gun for?
00:43:38What's going on?
00:43:39Where's your store?
00:43:40Main Street.
00:43:41Who runs it?
00:43:41Just me.
00:43:42All alone?
00:43:43Do you have to point that gun at me?
00:43:45Alone?
00:43:45Answer him.
00:43:47Yeah.
00:43:48You locked up when you left?
00:43:49Nobody knows you were coming here.
00:43:50That's right.
00:43:51Just a service call.
00:43:54That gun makes me nervous, mister.
00:43:55I'm not going to be a hero.
00:43:57You can put the gun away.
00:43:59Sure.
00:44:01But I'm telling you, buster like the others.
00:44:03One pass and the kid gets it.
00:44:08That's right.
00:44:09He gets it.
00:44:11So you see, his life depends on you.
00:44:13Got it?
00:44:14Yeah.
00:44:16Wilson?
00:44:18Carney back in?
00:44:19No.
00:44:20He's certainly been gone a long time.
00:44:37Maybe we ought to load the gun now to be sure, huh?
00:44:40No.
00:44:41That's just what the sheriff would like.
00:44:43Forget about me.
00:44:44I've had it.
00:44:45Don't con me, sheriff.
00:44:47The minute this gun was loaded, one of you brave boys might decide to go for the ride just
00:44:51to fire it.
00:44:52And if you fired it, that might alert a few state cops down there and the game would be
00:44:55over, wouldn't it?
00:44:57You got any food in the house?
00:44:59Of course I have.
00:45:01I'm going to grab a bite, Bart.
00:45:02Watch him.
00:45:03Bring me a little glass of milk, will you, Johnny?
00:45:05My elf was murdering me.
00:45:06Just watch him, Bart.
00:45:08Watch him.
00:45:11I don't dig it.
00:45:13Will somebody tell me we're going on?
00:45:15Sit down.
00:45:15Be quiet.
00:45:36Have you any feelings at all?
00:45:39No, I haven't, lady.
00:45:41They were taken out of me by experts.
00:45:45Feelings are a trap.
00:45:47Show me a guy with feelings and I'll show you a sucker.
00:45:52It's a weakness.
00:45:52Makes you think of something beside yourself.
00:45:56If I had any feelings left in me at all, it'd be for me.
00:46:00Just me.
00:46:01Don't you ever think of your mother, your father.
00:46:04Think of him?
00:46:06I used to think of him a great deal.
00:46:12My mother wasn't married.
00:46:14My old man was a dipsel.
00:46:16They left me in a home.
00:46:18A home.
00:46:24You stink!
00:46:26Johnny!
00:46:27Pinch, come back here!
00:46:30The kid, hold it.
00:46:31Pinch!
00:46:31Pinch!
00:46:32Get him.
00:46:33Stick him up or I'll blast you.
00:46:36Nice going, Bart.
00:46:38It's only a cap pistol.
00:46:39I gave it to him myself.
00:46:40Darn you, don't you?
00:46:42Darn you!
00:46:46He ought to beat his brains out, the little...
00:46:48What's so funny?
00:46:49You should have seen your face.
00:46:51A cap pistol.
00:46:52Go ahead, lab yourself sick.
00:46:53That's a pretty good model, though, isn't it?
00:46:55They make him real today, don't they?
00:46:56They are, Pinch.
00:46:57Blow his brains out.
00:47:00Couple of big, bold, bad men getting scared to death by a six-bit cap pistol.
00:47:04I ought to beat that kid.
00:47:06I'm not sure that he couldn't take you.
00:47:08Go put some milk on your ulcer and bring me a piece of the cake.
00:47:11Yeah, I need some milk.
00:47:13Pain's pretty bad.
00:47:14Where's Benny?
00:47:15Why don't we hear from Benny?
00:47:19Sit.
00:47:24If this isn't a stick-up, what is it?
00:47:28Did you come up here to fix the television set, Junior?
00:47:30Yeah.
00:47:31Well, then fix the television set.
00:47:33Todd, what's going on?
00:47:34They're planning to assassinate the president, Judd.
00:47:36Which president?
00:47:38The president of the United States.
00:47:39He arrives here this afternoon.
00:47:41You're kidding.
00:47:43No.
00:47:44No, you're not kidding.
00:47:47The president?
00:47:49Kill the president?
00:47:52They can't.
00:47:53They couldn't do a thing like that.
00:47:54They're stinking traitors.
00:47:57They're Benedict Donalds.
00:47:58Are you guys crazy?
00:47:59You can't do a thing like that.
00:48:01Sit down, reckless.
00:48:02Don't you realize what that means?
00:48:04That's assassination.
00:48:06He's your president, too.
00:48:08Make a deal with you, boy.
00:48:09We kill you instead of the president.
00:48:11That's even, Stephen.
00:48:12Okay with you?
00:48:15Thought not.
00:48:16Anybody else want to take the heat off the president?
00:48:18How about you, Sheriff?
00:48:19It's a bad joke, Baron.
00:48:21Anybody else want to volunteer?
00:48:23They're commies.
00:48:24They're enemy agents.
00:48:28All right, who is behind it, Baron?
00:48:32I haven't the slightest idea.
00:48:34What's in it for you?
00:48:37You're curious, aren't you, Sheriff?
00:48:38What, I'll ask?
00:48:40I like you, Sheriff.
00:48:41You've got guts.
00:48:42You must have been a good soldier.
00:48:44I got back.
00:48:45I want a silver star.
00:48:47That's pretty good.
00:48:48Killed 27 Jerrys all by myself.
00:48:50You're a born killer, that's all.
00:48:52Yeah.
00:48:53Some guys liked it.
00:48:54I know a couple.
00:48:56Just when you get real good at something, you're a murderer.
00:49:00Yeah, over there you can knock over a whole platoon.
00:49:02Or a guy invents a bomb and kills 100,000 people just like that.
00:49:05And maybe he gets more medals.
00:49:06Here, you put a slug in a double-crossing squirt that isn't even worth burying,
00:49:10and you have to take the gas.
00:49:11I got no feeling against the president.
00:49:14I'm just earning a living.
00:49:15By treason.
00:49:16Ace those craps.
00:49:18Don't give me that politics, Jazz.
00:49:19It's not my racket.
00:49:20I don't even know who's paying me, and I don't want to know.
00:49:22What's the difference?
00:49:23Didn't it occur to you why they want you to do it?
00:49:26Certainly it did.
00:49:27But that makes them suckers, not me.
00:49:28I'm the guy who's getting it made.
00:49:30Listen, Sheriff, a man can stand for so much and no more.
00:49:34Why, before the war, I drifted and drifted and ran.
00:49:37Always lost in a great big crowd.
00:49:40I hated that crowd.
00:49:42I used to dream about the crowd once in a while.
00:49:45I used to see all those faces scratching and shoving and biting.
00:49:50And then the mist would clear,
00:49:52and somehow all those faces would be me.
00:49:56All me and all nothing.
00:49:59But the war changed everything, eh, Baron?
00:50:03I'm no traitor, Sheriff.
00:50:05I won a silver star.
00:50:08And learned how to kill.
00:50:11Yeah.
00:50:13Maybe I did.
00:50:16Maybe that changed everything.
00:50:18Maybe people began to know who I was.
00:50:22After the show, I hooked up with an outfit for good dough.
00:50:25The fingers said where and how much.
00:50:28And Johnny Baron did the job.
00:50:31You think anybody else could handle this job?
00:50:33You think Benny O' Wheeler could do it without me?
00:50:34You're talking too much, Johnny.
00:50:35There's nobody else can do this job because they got too much feeling.
00:50:40And feeling's no good.
00:50:43I got nothing against the president, Sheriff.
00:50:46He's just worth a half a million bucks to me.
00:50:48Tax-free.
00:50:51Making my own laws about the taxes too, Pop.
00:50:54The guy is goofy.
00:50:56Shut up, Judd.
00:50:58Listen to him, Buster.
00:51:00And don't ever say that again.
00:51:02Ever.
00:51:03Ever.
00:51:05You heard him, Judd.
00:51:11Half a million dollars, huh?
00:51:14Yeah.
00:51:15That's a lot of scratch, Sheriff.
00:51:17A man could retire on that amount of scratch.
00:51:20How do you know it'll ever be paid?
00:51:21Half of it's been paid.
00:51:23And the rest?
00:51:24I'll get it.
00:51:26I wouldn't be sure.
00:51:27It's not just a man.
00:51:29It's the president.
00:51:30That's what's so funny.
00:51:33The laugh is on the guys who pay in the freight.
00:51:36All they're sleutin', they don't even know what they're doing.
00:51:38A half a million clams for absolutely nothing.
00:51:42Because tonight at five o'clock, I kill the president.
00:51:44One second after five, there's a new president.
00:51:46What changes?
00:51:48Nothing.
00:51:50What are they paying for?
00:51:52Nothing.
00:51:53Otherwise, I wouldn't have taken a job, Sheriff.
00:51:56You'd have taken it.
00:51:58You think so?
00:51:59Yeah.
00:52:00Why?
00:52:07All right.
00:52:08Take it easy.
00:52:09Come on, lady.
00:52:14Do as you're told and everything will be fine.
00:52:16Answer straight, clean, and plain.
00:52:19Answer it.
00:52:23Hello?
00:52:24Miss Benson, let me speak to the chief.
00:52:27Penny?
00:52:28Yeah.
00:52:29Train's on time.
00:52:30The car will be waiting in front of the station like you figured, facing you.
00:52:34Fine.
00:52:35Get back as soon as you can, and don't be followed.
00:52:37Check.
00:53:01Here's the big boy's car now.
00:53:04Lovely target.
00:53:06Hey, hold it, mister.
00:53:11Yes, officer.
00:53:13What is it?
00:53:14What's your name?
00:53:15Fred.
00:53:16Fred Whitaker.
00:53:17What are you doing in town?
00:53:19Just passing through.
00:53:20Where's your car?
00:53:21I don't have one.
00:53:22I hitchhiked in from Three Rivers, waiting for the train out.
00:53:25Figured I'd take the train on to L.A.
00:53:26What train?
00:53:28The five o'clock.
00:53:29The five o'clock.
00:53:30Now, that's right strange.
00:53:32Why, officer?
00:53:33Because we don't have any five o'clock train that stops here, mister.
00:53:37Except today.
00:53:38And that happens to be a special that you don't know about.
00:53:41Except that you do.
00:53:46Must be some mistake.
00:53:47You made it.
00:53:50Oh, now look, officer.
00:53:51I got identification.
00:53:54I can prove who I am.
00:53:56I've got my driver's license right here.
00:54:02Come on.
00:54:12Gunfire.
00:54:26Gunfire.
00:54:29Gunfire.
00:54:31Gunfire.
00:54:32Gunfire.
00:54:34Gunfire.

01:01:38Evet, sir. No, sir. Salute, sir.
01:01:41Big shots.
01:01:42You don't like big shots.
01:01:44Not when you're bigger, sheriff.
01:01:47I killed more juries than any five officers put together.
01:01:50I did some pretty good chopping in the war.
01:01:53Pretty good.
01:01:54Like I said before, you're a born killer, that's all.
01:01:57Yeah.
01:01:57They taught me how and I liked it.
01:02:00My CEO used to stand there and shake like a leaf while I chopped.
01:02:04If more guys like me had to...
01:02:05Tell me one thing, Baron.
01:02:06How come you miss Germany?
01:02:08They sent me home.
01:02:10My tour was finished.
01:02:11Your tour?
01:02:12In the infantry?
01:02:13Are you kidding?
01:02:14Why you finish your tour in the infantry when they plant you in a box?
01:02:17Tour.
01:02:18That was for the Air Corps.
01:02:19Turn it off.
01:02:20Yeah, you probably went over the hill.
01:02:21I said turn it off.
01:02:23You know, Baron, you got the yard look.
01:02:25You look yard bird to me.
01:02:26I'm telling you, sheriff.
01:02:27Turn it off.
01:02:28Big shot with the yard birds, huh?
01:02:30Come on now, tell me.
01:02:31Where were you court-martialed?
01:02:32What was it for?
01:02:34Rape?
01:02:34No, no, not rape.
01:02:36Killing, that's what you like.
01:02:37Killing.
01:02:37Maybe shooting down on our PWs, huh?
01:02:39Sit down and shut up.
01:02:42But, by golly, you got away with it, so...
01:02:46I got it.
01:02:47Section 8.
01:02:48You went out on a Section 8.
01:02:49Section 8.
01:02:50Psycho in charge of killing, huh?
01:02:52You know, I knew guys like you.
01:02:54Killing was sweet.
01:02:56Rather kill a man than love a girl.
01:02:58A real kick.
01:02:59The thrill with the guts.
01:03:00Stop it, Todd, stop it!
01:03:01Or maybe you didn't like your CO.
01:03:02Maybe you shot him in the back.
01:03:04That is.
01:03:04Maybe you killed...
01:03:09Like I said, shut up.
01:03:19Todd.
01:03:21Todd, darling, it's hopeless.
01:03:24It's not 5 o'clock yet.
01:03:28Going to keep your chops shut?
01:03:29Yeah.
01:03:31Hurts, huh?
01:03:32It hurts.
01:03:34Well, I can keep kicking as long as you keep shooting your face off.
01:03:36I know.
01:03:38Pop, you were right.
01:03:40You blew the power tube.
01:03:41I have one here.
01:03:43Now we're perking in a second.
01:03:44You know, I was thinking, Judd, if you were to clamp the main plate lead to a good ground like
01:03:49that table there,
01:03:51we'd get a better picture.
01:03:52A lot of lines in it now.
01:03:55Clamp the main plate lead to the table.
01:03:57Cut the static lines.
01:03:59Expert.
01:04:00First he wrecks the set, and then he tells the kid how to fix it.
01:04:04Main plate lead?
01:04:16That's right, Judd.
01:04:17All it needs is a high-potential ground.
01:04:19We're a long way from the broadcasting station.
01:04:21What are you guys yapping about?
01:04:22Technical talk, mister.
01:04:24I'm no radio man.
01:04:25Battleship New York, World War I.
01:04:27Glad to beat the Germans single-handed.
01:04:28Not exactly, son, but I was there as cap of law when the German fleet surrendered.
01:04:32All right, all right, stop the bullin', and fix that set, will ya?
01:04:36Yes, sir.
01:04:37Oh!
01:04:39Dad, Dad, what is it?
01:04:41Paid man.
01:04:42What hit him?
01:04:42It's his heart.
01:04:43He has a bad heart.
01:04:43Page, my pal's top drawer of the bureau.
01:04:46I'll get him.
01:04:46You stay put.
01:04:48The kid will get him.
01:05:16Page, put down that gun and get some water for your grandpa.
01:05:19But, Mom, listen.
01:05:20You heard me, Page.
01:05:24Oh, Jesus.
01:05:30You know what I think, Pop?
01:05:31I got a feeling your heart attacks a phony.
01:05:34It ain't bad.
01:05:35I'm warning, if you're trying to pull something, you better watch it.
01:05:38Baron, I've been thinking.
01:05:39You've been thinking you'd like to take a crack at this rifle.
01:05:41You think I want to get myself killed?
01:05:43Yes.
01:05:44Frankly, Sheriff, I don't think you'd mind getting yourself killed.
01:05:47Nobody wants to die.
01:05:49Do we have to talk about it?
01:05:50Why don't you shut up?
01:05:51No guts.
01:05:52Nerves.
01:05:52That's all it gets on my nerves.
01:05:53Now, why would I want to get myself killed?
01:05:56Because it's five minutes to five,
01:05:58and a shot might bring those state troopers storming all over the joint
01:06:00before the president arrives.
01:06:02But, Sheriff, I can put you away in two seconds by twisting your arm again.
01:06:06That way is no noise.
01:06:08So don't go winning any post-mortem medals.
01:06:11I wouldn't enjoy winning a post-mortem medal any more than you're going to enjoy
01:06:14that post-mortem money.
01:06:15What'd you say?
01:06:16What'd he say?
01:06:16I said nobody ever made it.
01:06:18And you won't either.
01:06:22You don't think so?
01:06:25So you got a plane.
01:06:26You'll never reach it ahead of the police.
01:06:28And if you do, you'll never make it to the border.
01:06:30You ever hear of the jet fighter?
01:06:32You know how many airstrips there are between here and the border?
01:06:35You know, a fellow could get an education just listening to this guy?
01:06:38But maybe he's right, Johnny.
01:06:39Look, you said half the money had already been paid.
01:06:42A smart guy would hit the road right now.
01:06:44Fly out of here.
01:06:45Skip the president.
01:06:46Spend the money in South America.
01:06:47Alive.
01:06:49He's right, Johnny.
01:06:51Why take the risk?
01:06:52We can lamb now.
01:06:53We can make it.
01:06:54We don't have to fool with this thing.
01:06:55It's too big, Johnny.
01:06:56There's something wrong with it.
01:06:58Chicken.
01:06:58Chicken.
01:07:00All right, so call it chicken.
01:07:01Who wants to be rich and dead?
01:07:02They'll get us.
01:07:03They never missed yet, Johnny.
01:07:04The guy's right.
01:07:05You've got the loot.
01:07:06Let's take off and get out of here for good.
01:07:07Once we're across the border...
01:07:08Ace those traps.
01:07:09Benny wasn't chicken.
01:07:10They didn't waste any time on him.
01:07:12I tell you, we haven't got a chance.
01:07:14Turn it off, Bart.
01:07:18You're embarrassing me in front of the sheriff.
01:07:20But, Johnny, even if we swing it, he's the president.
01:07:23They'll never give up.
01:07:24And you don't figure that the guys who are paying off
01:07:26are just going to let you fly away, do you?
01:07:28They'll be after you just like the Secret Service.
01:07:31I thought of that too, Sheriff.
01:07:33It might be an internationally embarrassing situation
01:07:36if the feds happen to catch up with us first.
01:07:39So, Bart, you've just got to realize
01:07:41that everybody's going to be on your tail
01:07:42from five o'clock until the day you die.
01:07:46There's a hole in your argument, Sheriff.
01:07:48What is it?
01:07:49We're already wanted for murder,
01:07:50so you can only take the gas once.
01:07:52They'll get us, Johnny.
01:07:56They won't get us, Bart.
01:07:58Not us.
01:07:59You sure, Johnny?
01:08:02You leave it to me.
01:08:07You're sick, man.
01:08:08You're sick.
01:08:09I don't like that.
01:08:12Don't play God just because you've got a gun.
01:08:16But you see, Sheriff, that's the way it is.
01:08:18When you've got a gun, you are a sort of God.
01:08:21If you had the gun, I'd be the chump,
01:08:23and you'd be the God.
01:08:25The gun gives you the power of life and death.
01:08:29It's a funny sort of feeling to have control of life and death.
01:08:32You must have had it during the war.
01:08:35You could miss a man if you had a mind to,
01:08:38or you could kill dead in his tracks.
01:08:41And that made you kind of God.
01:08:43And I liked it.
01:08:45Without the gun, I'm nothing.
01:08:48And I never had anything before I got one.
01:08:51First time I got one on my hands and killed a man,
01:08:53I got some self-respect.
01:08:56I was somebody.
01:08:59Like this kid over here.
01:09:01If that cap pistol was a real gun and I didn't have a gun,
01:09:04he'd be a kind of a God, too.
01:09:05And if I wanted my life,
01:09:07I'd worship the ground he walks on.
01:09:10And I'd pay him the half a million dollars for my life.
01:09:14Because life is all I have.
01:09:19But the squirt doesn't have the gun.
01:09:21I have.
01:09:21And I can lose the lightning.
01:09:29The score is all tied up.
01:09:31Five and five.
01:09:33No noise.
01:09:33Just pictures.
01:09:34First time this season.
01:09:51You're wrong about guarding the gun, Sheriff.
01:09:54Without the gun, you would never have spit at me.
01:09:56You would never have even noticed me.
01:09:59But because of the gun,
01:10:00you'll remember me as long as you live.
01:10:18Where is it now?
01:10:19Blowing for the 66 crossing.
01:10:21Outside town.
01:10:24All right.
01:10:24Nobody moves.
01:10:25This is it.
01:10:26You.
01:10:26Over there.
01:10:28Johnny.
01:10:29Let me see once.
01:10:29We're going to do it, Bart.
01:10:31This is my meat.
01:10:31We're going to do it.
01:10:32Just a seat.
01:10:40Return fire!
01:11:06We're going to do it.
01:11:08See you.
