00:00The tide is turning on reform, that they can't now win by elections, they've
00:04reached probably the peak of their support, it's going down, so very good,
00:09congratulations to Andy Vernon, but actually tide is turning on reform as
00:13well, so this is really important in that respect. I was elected here to serve my
00:18country with a mandate that we secured at a general election two years ago, a very
00:23considerable mandate for change, we are carrying out that change.
00:47Andy Burnham is back in Westminster and his victory is sending shockwaves through
00:52British politics. The Greater Manchester Mayor has won the Makerfields by-election
00:57with a commanding result, and many now believe the path is open for a direct
01:01challenge to Prime Minister and Labour leader Keir Starmer. This was not an
01:06ordinary by-election. The contest was triggered after Labour MP Josh Simons
01:11resigned, creating a route for Burnham to return to Parliament after years focused
01:16on Greater Manchester. And voters delivered a clear verdict. Burnham secured around 55% of
01:23the vote, winning roughly 25,000 votes and finishing more than 9,000 votes ahead of his
01:29nearest rival. He not only held the seat for Labour, but improved on the party's
01:34performance from the 2024 general election, despite difficult national conditions.
01:39The result is being viewed as a strong personal endorsement for Burnham,
01:44particularly in the Red Wall areas that have become crucial battlegrounds in British politics.
01:49Reform UK finished second, highlighting the growing pressure Labour faces from challengers on the
01:55right. But the bigger story is what happens next. Burnham has long been considered one of Labour's
02:01most popular figures. Nicknamed the King of the North by supporters, he built his reputation as Greater
02:08Manchester Mayor through campaigns on transport, policing, regional investment and post-pandemic recovery.
02:14Many Labour members see him as a politician capable of reconnecting with working-class voters who have
02:21drifted away from the party. At the same time, Keir Starmer is facing mounting criticism over economic
02:28concerns, immigration, broken promises and disappointing local election results. That has fueled growing
02:35speculation about Labour's future direction. And now, Burnham has something he lacked before,
02:41a seat in Parliament. Reports suggest he either already has or could quickly secure the number
02:48of MP nominations needed to enter a formal Labour leadership contest. Burnham's victory speech added
02:54even more intrigue. He declared that politics isn't working and describes the moment as a potential
03:00turning point for Labour. While he stopped short of announcing a leadership bid, many interpreted his
03:07remarks as a clear signal that his ambitions in Westminster are far from over. Starmer, meanwhile,
03:13has insisted he would stand and fight in any leadership contest. There are also reports that Downing Street
03:19has explored offering Burnham a major government role, though allies of the Manchester Mayor reportedly
03:25kept their distance during the campaign. So what happens now? If Burnham decides to run, he could quickly
03:32become one of the favourites among Labour members. But a leadership battle would also bring risks. A divisive
03:39contest could deepen tensions inside Labour and hand political momentum to rivals such as Reform UK.
03:46For now, Keir Starmer remains Prime Minister. But Andy Burnham's decisive return to Parliament has
03:52transformed the political landscape and raised a question that is now dominating Westminster.
03:58Is this the beginning of Labour's next leadership battle? The answer could arrive much sooner than many expected.
