00:00It was the first time Algeria had ever made it to the World Cup.
00:03But as they prepared to play their opening match against the tournament favourites West Germany,
00:08all they could think of was the ridicule and insults the arrogant Germans had been spewing in the press.
00:14I received a tape of the Algerian team, but I haven't shown it to our players, because they would laugh
00:19at me.
00:19If we lose, I'll jump on the first train back to Munich.
00:22The Algerians weren't being taken seriously, but that was all about to change.
00:27Because if the overconfident German manager had put the tape in his VCR,
00:31what he would have seen is an incredibly tight-knit team who had already beaten some of the greatest clubs
00:37in Europe during their friendly matches.
00:39And now, using the Germans' disrespect as fuel, Algeria were determined to get revenge on West Germany in front of
00:45the world at the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
00:48And that they did. Algeria dominated the game, thoroughly humiliating West Germany,
00:53and defeating the favourites 2-1 in their first ever World Cup appearance.
00:58But they hadn't finished yet.
00:59They still had two more group stage matches to play against Austria and Chile.
01:04And after Algeria lost to Austria and beat Chile,
01:07all they could do was sit back and watch,
01:09as the stage was set for West Germany and Austria's third and final match of the stage.
01:14The game began fiercely competitive, and when West Germany scored in the first 10 minutes,
01:19it looked like they could potentially be on for a rematch against Algeria in the semi-finals.
01:24But after that first goal, something strange happened.
01:27Both teams just kind of stopped playing.
01:30Why?
01:30Well, the top two teams of this group stage would advance.
01:33And after that first goal, this is what the leaderboard looked like.
01:37All three countries were now set to be tied on points, each with two wins and one loss.
01:43However, West Germany and Austria were both ahead of Algeria on goal difference.
01:48They both already basically secured their spots in the next stage.
01:52If West Germany kept pushing and got two more goals,
01:55it would reduce Austria's goal difference,
01:57and West Germany would advance to the next stage with Algeria.
02:00And if Austria fought back and simply drew the game or even won,
02:04it would take away Germany's points, and Austria would advance with Algeria.
02:09So both countries essentially agreed to just take it easy
02:12and force the underdogs out of the competition.
02:15The fans from all countries involved were furious.
02:18The German broadcaster called it disgraceful.
02:20The Austrian broadcaster told his viewers to turn off their TV sets,
02:24and the fans in the stadium started chanting
02:26that the players from the two countries should kiss each other.
02:29When the farcical game finally ended,
02:32Algeria had been eliminated from the World Cup.
02:35West Germany progressed all the way to the final,
02:37which they lost to Italy,
02:38and in the fallout, FIFA changed the structure of future World Cups
02:42so that the final games of every group stage are played at the same time.
