Watch as a young male lion's attempt to prey on a newborn buffalo calf is dramatically interrupted by the calf's protective herd.

Nicholas Ratia captured the remarkable wildlife encounter in Kenya. The video shows a young male lion targeting a buffalo calf believed to be only a day old.

As the predator closes in, the vulnerable calf appears to be in serious danger. But within moments, the rest of the buffalo herd charges into action.

Dozens of buffalo race toward the lion, forcing the big cat to retreat as they surround and protect the youngster. The determined herd continues chasing the lion away demonstrating the powerful defensive instincts buffalo are known for.

The dramatic footage was shared online and Nicholas said: "A young male lion attacks a day old buffalo calf BUT the entire herd came to rescue."
