US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian have signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding to end the conflict in the Middle East. Both sides are claiming the agreement as a major win as they prepare for 60 days of more in-depth negotiations toward a final peace settlement.

00:02In the lavish halls of Versailles, U.S. President Donald Trump puts his
00:05distinctive signature on a document the world's been waiting for. In 14 points,
00:10this memorandum of understanding is meant to end a war that spread through
00:14the Middle East over months, shaking the global economy in the process. Later,
00:19Trump confirms to expectant reporters outside that the deal is done.
00:29As Trump heads back to the U.S. from the G7 summit in France, the U.S. and Iran enter
00:34a 60-day period
00:35of further talks. For now, they've agreed fighting is over, including on the Israel-Lebanon front.
00:42Both sides will end their blockades shutting off the critical Strait of Hormuz and Iranian ports.
00:47The U.S. will lift some sanctions and unfreeze billions of dollars in Iranian assets,
00:51while Iran reaffirms it won't seek a nuclear weapon. Iran has signed the deal too.
00:57Trump's host, French President Emmanuel Macron, is pleased. Trump and European allies had earlier
01:03fallen out over the war, but that looks to be in the past now. And with the Strait of Hormuz
01:08open again,
01:09key supplies like oil and fertilizer will flow once more.
01:15So we will continue to work. But in any case, this is a moment of peace and good news for
01:21many of our
01:21compatriots, because normally fuel prices will also fall, as will the price of gas.
01:28Significantly, both sides are declaring victory. The agreement also provides at least 300 billion
01:33U.S. dollars for Iran's post-war reconstruction and development. Iran's parliament speaker,
01:38the country's chief negotiator, expects Tehran to exercise control over the Strait of Hormuz in
01:43the long term. And he called the agreement a, quote, record of U.S. failure to achieve its goals
01:48by the use of force.
01:53The difference between the negotiations now and the previous periods is that today there is a flag
01:59of victory in the field, which both enemies and friends have admitted. Our people saw the glory of
02:06the armed forces too, even though they were against the well-equipped enemy.
02:11But analysts like Middle East watcher Sina Azodi see it as a win for both sides. For the U.S.,
02:17a commitment from Iran that it won't try to acquire a nuclear weapon. And for Iran,
02:22sanctions relief, easing inflation and unemployment. However, he says the Middle East isn't yet in the
02:28clear. The deal explicitly says fighting in Lebanon must stop too. And for that to happen,
02:34U.S. ally Israel will need to get on board. Well, Israelis are not, are clearly not happy
02:40with what has happened. We have to wait and see how, whether they will restrain themselves
02:47as a fear of President Trump or President, how much President Trump will try to
02:54restrain Israeli, Israeli allies in their conduct in Lebanon. The clock is also now ticking for Iran and
03:03the U.S. to work out details and differences that won't fit onto a brief document like the one
03:08Trump and his Iranian counterpart have signed. The extendable 60-day period for further talks that
03:14starts now tests whether a deal can be finalized, with Trump already threatening new bombings if it
03:20can't. Andy Xiu and John Van Trieste for Taiwan Plus.
