AccuWeather's Tony Laubach breaks down how he's preparing to chase severe storms as another day of dangerous weather kicks off.
Transcript
00:00hello network welcome back we're doing the tour of tony's car here while uh bernie gives way to
00:05jeff cornish here we're kind of talking about the interior setup so if you're joining us on
00:08the network we're talking about the cab setup and how we chase in a much more simplified version
00:13than some of the giant tanks and dominators that you guys are used to seeing showing that
00:17normal everyday joes like this can do this again talking about the tablet and
00:22cam where you see all the video here we'll take you to the back seat because
00:25this is where all the good stuff is this is where all the gear i keep with me so i'm
00:29able
00:29to reach around and grab all of that the live unit that we run and of course the good luck
00:33pokemon you cannot go anywhere without psyduck and green zip in honor of my late cat who
00:40was 19 snacks always a huge part of this you gotta have the road snacks and my number one
00:46favorite hard salami that is where it's at right there and cheese love cheese cheese is a good
00:52thing but camera bag pretty simple it's a little bit messy here i was not uh actually thinking i was
00:57going to show this off but i have a variety of cameras that i use obviously got the video cameras
01:01still cameras i'm a big photographer so i love to to take good pictures lightning is always one of my
01:06favorite things and then all the stuff in the trunk which we won't show you because that's just
01:09suitcases and stuff you all know what that is it's closed you're on a road trip is basically
01:13what this looks like for you here think about it is being on the road long term torm torm i
01:20have
01:21tornado on the brain so we're going to switch you around flip you back to me wonders of technology
01:26here but yes that is the tour of the car that is basically what i live out of during these
01:31months
01:31of the year and again we keep the setup really really simple we were talking about it just before
01:36we came back to the network how much the technology has allowed us to shrink the setups from big bulky
01:42laptops that took up half the front cab to basically just running things off tablets and phones now it's
01:47such a great thing because it allows us to focus more on storms as opposed to trying to deal with
01:51all
01:51the technology so it is a very very fun thing to be able to do that we just got our
01:57first severe
01:57thunderstorm warning on that line here i'm going to run that through here on my accuweather app and
02:02talk about the severe thunderstorm warning this is just to the north of lincoln nebraska on that line
02:08of storms this would be just off to our northeast uh they're talking uh 60 mile per hour winds and
02:13one
02:14inch hail with that again that's new warming that does include the bloomington normal illinois area here
02:19uh you've heard us talk about uh possible tornado tags on some of these severe thunderstorms this one
02:25does not have it but these cells do have what we call a sickle shape to them they've got a
02:30little
02:30bend in them uh which is indicative of all the uh shear at the low level so uh right now
02:35not a tornado
02:36concern but again i think we could start to see that ramp up here over the next couple hours but
02:39that's
02:40the first warning that we've seen with what i'm going to go ahead and call the the main show again
02:45that's
02:45going to be north of lincoln uh toward the bloomington area other towns in that uh just to
02:51the north of havana uh man manito delavan um minier hartstock atlanta atlanta illinois folks not
02:59atlanta georgia we are in illinois uh so some small towns in there and then again the bloomington normal
03:04area so that is the new severe thunderstorm warning that we are watching the cells we are looking at
03:09right now are a little bit further to the south and west of that so we go from bloomington we
03:13uh step it
03:13down toward beardston and uh the hannibal missouri area hometown of colonel sherman potter one of my
03:18favorite tv shows there i'm going to throw that out there as well but we are starting to see that
03:22development there i would imagine we're going to start to see more warnings pop up and again pretty
03:25quickly these storms are going to intensify we're going to be paying attention initially to the storms
03:30that are coming out of the hannibal and quincy areas right now those are the initial cells and again
03:35depending on how the line propagates and how it organizes it develops we either will follow them east or
03:41we'll kind of follow the line down to the south uh toward the saint louis area i did put a
03:45tornado
03:45watch out for us that came out in the last uh within the last hour going till 10 o'clock
03:50that does
03:51include columbia st louis springfield uh up to bloomington normal quincy hannibal um not quite
03:58to mount vernon illinois so it doesn't quite go to there effingham is in on that and it basically goes
04:03the indiana illinois line is where that particular tornado watch cuts off so we got a lot of stuff going
04:09on
04:09and uh it's going to be a busy afternoon for sure we are uh continuing like i said to really
04:14uh hone in
04:15on the store on storms that are kind of right now we're on uh i-72 it's an interstate that
04:21basically
04:22runs from hannibal to springfield and then uh those interstates kind of diverge out get to decatur up that
04:28way up to bloomington so part of what we're uh doing right now is is kind of mapping our road
04:33network and
04:34trying to figure out where we want to be for intercepts because unlike previous days where storms
04:39are moving slower we can kind of interact with the storms a little bit better today is all about
04:42either catching as many storms along the way as possible or finding routes that the storms are
04:47running along right now so believe it or not uh i do study maps i do i am watching maps
04:53and eyeballing
04:53major routes so i know if i got to take certain highways east west i'm able to do that to
04:58keep up
04:58with storms especially moving as quickly as they are right now some good news i'm going to say again
05:05this is experience talking this isn't uh anything uh specific is that there are a lot of storms that
05:09are firing along this line the bad news though we're not seeing these immediately lining out so
05:15there is some discreet nature these this might be a lot of individual storms along a line so we're
05:22paying attention to a lot of different things right now this is a very dynamic situation and you've been
05:27hearing a lot of the uncertainties and what is going to likely come uh come with this so we've got
05:32a lot
05:32we're paying attention to we got a lot we're eyeballing right now but again we're just getting
05:35started here we are um basically read read and ready to go we've been sitting here for about two
05:41and a half hours this is the hurry up and wait and this is the wait part of the chase
05:45but folks the
05:46wait is over because we are about to bring the great jeff cornish on and if you are going to
05:54be here
05:55in two seconds we are right back to the network
05:58you
