00:00as we approach the end of the official first week and wouldn't you know that every 40 year
00:04old out there is feeling like going outside and running on the pitch this morning because they
00:08watched Leo Messi yesterday at 38 years old post three goals for Argentina over Algeria in Kansas
00:15City he tied Miroslav Klose's all-time record of 16 World Cup goals in the process Messi right now
00:25absolutely on fire Joe I do ridiculous and listen we uh being in South Florida uh Craig listen we
00:32we've learned to understand what Messi is all about and just how ridiculously good he is listen the
00:39idea of him scoring in a World Cup is not it's not foreign to anybody we all expect it but
00:46uh to get
00:47the hat trick last night uh and by the way in every city New York in the Midwest I mean
00:54you had
00:54those two sets of fans battling every chance they got here and Messi well he put an end to that
01:01in a hurry in that game last night Killian Mbappe stole the show in France's three to one win over
01:07Senegal on Tuesday he had a 30-yard strike in stoppage time maybe the goal of the tournament thus far
01:14as uh France who were outshot five to one in the first half dominated in the second half
01:19and of course that was the story of that match meanwhile Floyd Mayweather is in the news and not
01:25for fighting he's been hit with two felony charges theft over 100,000 and a check fraud and then he
01:34wrote a 200,000 bad check to a high-end Las Vegas boutique what is going on here Joe why
01:39is Floyd
01:40Mayweather in the news for the wrong reasons again well because Floyd Mayweather is the same guy that
01:47used to walk around the strip in Vegas with you know like two million dollars in a briefcase and
01:52a bodyguard uh because you never know when he'd come across a Lamborghini he'd want to buy or
01:58something else along those lines the problem is once he stopped boxing and people stopped paying
02:03attention to a guy that uh well couldn't get hit and never knocked anybody out and this is what you
02:08got kind of went through that money a little quick didn't he there Craig big surprise in the
02:13National Hockey League John Tortorella is not coming back as Vegas's head coach so they'll be looking
02:19for a new one after the Golden Knights and he decided to part ways he went 21-8-1 with
02:25the team
02:25including the playoffs so a big surprise here and Tortorella's managed and coached so many different
02:31teams he's going to head to another team meanwhile the FBI has disrupted an alleged plot to attack UFC
02:39America 250 at the White House on Sunday with at least five people in custody after uncovering a
02:45plan to use explosives wow good thing they stopped these people in their tracks the U.S. Open officially
02:52begins tomorrow Joe Brooks Koepka wants to play in this week's U.S. Open but how can he do it
02:57with
02:57these nerve issues that he's having not somebody that's going to be on my board this week that's
03:02unfortunate I had him last week and he he was the tied for the first round lead uh Craig there
03:08at the uh
03:08the RBC and then of course had to withdraw with the issues going on there you know he's in our
03:15neck of the woods and I I've been rooting for him man and this is a tournament I had circled
03:20for him
03:20that I thought he would be ready for but I I don't know I'm kind of with you here tough
03:25to look at him
03:26now at this week yeah when you hear thoracic outlet surgery not somebody that uh I mean you know it's
03:32very
03:32unfortunate as you said but not somebody you could back financially meanwhile it will be fun at the very
03:36least to see Venus and Serena Williams we don't know what the results will be but Joe they're going
03:40to participate in doubles at Wimbledon I'm looking forward to it believe it or not I might actually
03:47watch a tennis match although I promise you it'll be the most watched Craig I promise you that
03:53hour number two welcome back to the early line here on sports grid I'm Craig Mish along with Joe
03:58Ranieri as we have you covered here for the next hour and a lot of world cup discussion we've got
04:03matches set to go off later today we'll discuss those and have a preview as well but for now let's
04:08get back to everything that you may have missed overnight which would include Joe an all-time
04:12performance yet again from Leo Messi from playing here in South Florida to playing back in his home
04:18country for Argentina he posted three goals yesterday against Algeria and that is one of the best
04:25individual performances of all time it's a hat trick 38 years old he just keeps on rolling and it was
04:32his 200th appearance for Argentina on the 20th anniversary of his world cup debut I think the
04:38one big takeaway from yesterday Joe is that we've learned that in four years from now we're going to
04:46see Messi in this thing again and there was some question about that it's not a question now
04:51he really it's not and if you watch those goals yesterday for a dude that is 38 years old that
04:59everyone was like yeah I mean he's gonna be there you know he's gonna anchor some things but some of
05:06the set people you got to be he had two long-range absolute missiles uh for goals yesterday and then
05:13he had he was set up on a beautiful one to begin with but I mean that's like 2006 Messi
05:20what we just
05:21watched now can he keep it up I wouldn't bet against him uh Greg I mean that's the bottom line
05:26to me
05:26is throw the age out the window you can either play or you can't play and he continues to show
05:31us
05:32even at 38 father time's gonna have to take a back seat Joe mentioned a long-range missile that was
05:39the story in stoppage time yesterday for Kylian Mbappe he had a 30 yard strike in stoppage time
05:46and France ends up beating Senegal by a final of three to one it was a very dominant performance from
05:53the offense and now Mbappe Joe has 14 World Cup goals France is one of those countries we're going
06:00to keep a close eye on as the World Cup rolls on very uh and again if you look at
06:07some of the favorites
06:08right we we saw Spain go what like what in the world is happening here with a nil-nil opening
06:15round
06:15game right against Cape Verde and then we watched France yesterday and we're going oh yes this is
06:22exactly the France team that we thought we were going to get so yeah they looked apart Spain not so
06:28much we'll see what England brings to the table but yeah uh they looked very dangerous and worthy of
06:35you know one of the favorite prices of the top three or four teams meanwhile Floyd Mayweather's in the
06:41news again Joe for writing bad checks a hundred thousand dollar check fraud two hundred thousand
06:47dollar bad check to a Las Vegas boutique I mean Mayweather makes this in a single fight uh you
06:53know for like five seconds because he makes millions and millions of dollars a fight I don't even know
06:57how this can happen for a guy of this magnitude oh I do again when you're walking around a you
07:03live in
07:04Vegas be the stories of him legendary walking around with just suitcases filled with you know a million
07:11two million three just walking in the car deal whatever he wanted at the particular time he did
07:17this for years absolute years but the problem is he's not fighting anymore and he hasn't for a long
07:23time so you know what boy that uh that money dried up in a hurry and this is exactly what
07:30you get now
07:30he's writing bad checks unbelievable story as old as time he is scheduled to fight Manny Pacquiao again if
07:38I'm not mistaken later this year which is like the anniversary of the time they fought like 10 years
07:43ago but I guess that's the reason why John Tortorella what a bizarre story here he was asked to take
07:49over
07:49the Vegas Golden Knights with a couple of weeks to go in the uh in the months ago in the
07:53season he went
07:5321-8-1 and now is parting ways with Vegas they did not win the championship Joe and so he
08:00got them
08:00there but I guess he's out Tortorella has managed or coached in so many different places it's been hard
08:06to keep up but it seems like he wins wherever he goes and if he wants to continue to uh
08:11coach a team
08:11I guess he'll be able to I it is I mean I don't know what's going on here because a
08:16Cassidy is still
08:18under contract for Vegas so Cassidy can't even take a job someplace else so you know Tortorella comes in
08:24for the final week of the regular season and through the playoffs falls two games two wins short of a
08:30title
08:30and now he's out the door so I don't know what Vegas is doing but they're basically paying two
08:37coaches now and don't have one very strange situation the FBI has disrupted a plot to attack
08:44UFC America 250 for those unfamiliar UFC 250 is at the White House this Sunday night five people are
08:53in custody after they uncovered a plan to uh run some explosives did they cancel this event Joe
09:01they canceled the event it already happened it already happened on Sunday oh it was Sunday night
09:06okay shows you what I know yeah the okay but apparently we found out after the event went off that
09:11uh they would that the FBI had swooped in prior just prior to the event started yeah they broke this
09:18up here they were planning on using drones and the story is crazy but it was never going to happen
09:24because the FBI knew what was going on the entire time all right well said uh Father's Day is coming
09:30up
09:30on Sunday and for Brooks Koepka not sure how that's gonna go because he intends to play in the U
09:35.S. Open
09:35but he's got some back neck and nerve issues in fact he withdrew from the Canadian Open and Joe this
09:43was a
09:43really uh interesting story because he defected from live golf back to the PGA Tour after defecting
09:49the PGA for live golf and Koepka was one of those names that I think a lot of folks are
09:54rooting for
09:55but hard to see a lot of success coming this week I I had him last week in fact too
10:01and then he had
10:02the lead after the first round six under par and then had to withdraw and it's unfortunate because this
10:08is a guy he's got a few U.S. Open championships he's got five majors you know he has been
10:15trending
10:15in the right direction all season long this was the event and the major that I had him circling uh
10:22I
10:22had it circled waiting for him to take another U.S. Open title at Shinnecock but it's very hard at
10:28this
10:29point a lot of other things going on health-wise with him and it's uh truly unfortunate Wimbledon will
10:35give you at least two reasons to watch Serena and Venus Williams they're back June 29th at Wimbledon
10:43participating in the doubles event Serena is 44 years old Venus is 46 years old Joe so I don't know
10:52how
10:53this is gonna go but if I know anything about the way that these women have played in the past
10:57expect the unexpected I think they could do well listen we all thought at this point that you know
11:04pickleball would be in their future but now they're heading to Wimbledon to try and take down
11:09a doubles title and you know what wouldn't bet against them and I can promise you this Craig it will
11:15be
11:16the most watched doubles final that uh we have ever seen at Wimbledon is now that you got a couple
11:22of big
11:22names yes people will watch you know what's funny about uh stories like these Joe is that we all love
11:30nostalgia I think that we've established that like people love to uh take themselves back in time maybe
11:36where they feel always back in time was a better time but what people love more in sports are the
11:43older folks who succeed because it makes them feel and I'm sure it makes you feel and me feel after
11:5050
11:50years old hey if they can do something that's unprecedented maybe I can do something that's
11:56unprecedented now listen I'm not saying that Serena and Venus Williams Joe are going to win
12:00the doubles title at Wimbledon but I think generally people who watch sports root for this sort of
12:07success to see uh older players do well because it reminds us of maybe when we thought that we had
12:14some athletic ability and I know you did Joe I know you had a lot of baseball ability I yeah
12:20I'll tell
12:21you what Craig nothing warms my heart though I don't care how old is watching uh pros
12:26uh lip out on two foot putts I get more enjoyment out of that I don't care how old they
12:31are than
12:32anything else because even if the pros look silly doing it I feel much better about my golf game after
12:39that golf is that one game that we can still play into our 40s 50s 60s uh 60s and beyond
12:4760s am I
12:48really going to be there in less than 10 years gosh that's that's harsh
12:50you
