00:01welcome back grant and danny on the fan sonny styles on the practice field today the seventh
00:06overall pick for the commanders it is veteran minicamp but the rookies mingling with the
00:11veterans in legitimate workouts really for the first time this is more extensive than otas a
00:17couple of clips that came out of the press conference of sonny styles from nbc4 here
00:22talking about the defense and his play style yeah i mean i think if you like to run hit play
00:27fast
00:27you know it's a perfect defense for you you don't got to do a whole lot of like crazy thinking
00:30you know i think uh we're multiple defense but like it doesn't feel like crazy for us you know
00:35the way he the way he teaches information it's easy to digest and it's a it's a really interesting
00:41combination with some of these guys in that linebacker room like frankie lupo is that hair
00:44on fire kind of guy how do you think your personality complements with them uh yeah you know i like
00:51to
00:51go there i just have fun with the game you know talk a little crap have fun laugh smile but
00:56i'm
00:56still super focused super locked in um you know i think the way i play the game it's like
01:00i think you can't you can't lose the joy in the game you know it's still it's still the game
01:03we
01:04love the game we've been playing since we're little so danny this isn't a surprise and it's not out on
01:08a
01:08limb he was the top 10 pick and he was the first rounder this year but if you take daniels
01:12out of
01:12the equation i do think when i get out there for training camp on day one the thing i'm most
01:17excited
01:18to see is number 52 running around just someone that's that big and tall but also just you know
01:23chisel it out of rock moving around that way is going to be exciting for folks even even in shorts
01:28and a t-shirt four four six forty at six five and about 250 pounds there's aren't people like that
01:34no it's rare and it doesn't really exist in the league and he's kind of one of one in that
01:38way
01:38he's an action figure but how are they going to employ him and implement him i said this to you
01:42the
01:43other day it might have even been yesterday the linebacking core is my interest of curate you know
01:48my area of interest my areas of most curiosity maybe with this team how are you going to use all
01:54three i think you know when we talk about the nationals as an example their best lineup their best team
02:00most nights has the four outfielders playing in some variation they're four of the nine best starters
02:06in terms of offense on the on the roster with jacob young's defensive ability and now that he can hit
02:11home runs and dylan cruz the ability to play in the field and what he can give you three homers
02:16in his last 10 lyle a former player of the month in the national league woods a superstar
02:21there's not a lineup with nine guys where you don't have those four in it so normally that means
02:25one of them's got a dh you got to configure it but that's the goal for ronnie colombie when he
02:31works
02:31with his computer on the lineup every night that's the goal for blake butera how do we get all these
02:35guys on the field i view it the same way with the commanders in positionless football a little bit
02:39you're going to play 11 defenders i don't really care where they line up or where they stand or who
02:44does
02:44what but their best 11 includes sunny styles leo chanel and frankie louvu being out there so how do
02:51you get all three on the field without missing out on something somewhere or having a bad matchup
02:56that's what durante jones is getting paid a lot of money to figure out yeah i think it's a good
03:00way
03:00to think about it right where you know at the lower levels in be it i don't know little league
03:07peewee
03:07football uh flag football then even up in high school you go maybe two of our best 11 players
03:14play the same position instead of just saying well you're the backup fill in the blank you probably
03:19want that guy on the football field that can hold true the higher up even you go whether it's in
03:23college or you get to the pros of your best 11 pieces three of them might be linebackers you might
03:29not have a defense that normally calls the three linebackers so what do you do you add speed and
03:33versatility and enter styles and chanel i mean chanel wasn't a full-time starter in kansas city he lined
03:38up 17 different places including the popcorn machine so that's kind of one of the reasons you got it
03:43hey the athleticism jumps off the charts that's obvious that stands out but also that versatility
03:47where is he going to be on a given play i want that i want the the offense to not
03:51know you got a couple
03:52guys that are interchangeable that way now you start to build some of the mystery so a guy might act
03:56like
03:57a safety when he's listed as a linebacker guy might act like a defensive end when he's listed as a
04:01linebacker i want that yeah he's a full-time player but not at one individual position to your
04:05point because he moves are you a starter yeah so position you play you got it dan quinn with the
04:11media
04:11today talking about what he has enjoyed seeing from each side of the ball during otas yeah i think
04:17the offensive side i'll start there first um their ability to get in and out of plays quickly
04:23dan i think that's one um what the skies looks like how can they change a play and get into
04:28the
04:29next one to give us the best advantage on a particular play so i would say recognition and
04:35knowing there's a couple of plays that they could have as their menu um they might have three
04:39different plays in their pocket going to the line of scrimmage and so the ability to get in and out
04:43of those takes a lot of disciplines that's been one thing that i've been pleased i'd say they're
04:47ahead of the curve on that defensively um i would say i like the disguises that i see you know
04:53from
04:54the back seven in this type of format like it's much different to evaluate the offensive line and
05:01defensive line you know it's not the same game without their pads so the disguising the movements on
05:07the defense i think that's something that i've been impressed by you know the communication from
05:11linebackers safeties back and forth those would be two things that jump out to me so far insightful
05:16answer from dan quinn who was also asked i told you my position that i'm really locking in on his
05:21linebacker what's the position group he's looking forward to seeing the most feel like there's a lot
05:25of people at running backs i'm looking forward to seeing those guys there at corner there's some
05:29players i wanted to see um certainly a quarterback um into this one with sam and eighth and you get
05:34you
05:35a lot of reps into this camp so i like having the the feet to the fire so to speak
05:40for some of these
05:41guys and and they're ready for their chance to prove that they put in the work too so i think
05:45it's it's
05:46kind of like a win-win to make sure where are we what do we need to you know hit
05:50on some more now
05:51running back's not a spot you can judge that well in mini camp because there's not a lot of contact
05:56nobody's tackling that's always a deep into camp even probably the preseason before you really get good
06:01intel there but because bill hasn't been able to do much more rashad white katron allen jeremy
06:06mcnichols they signed jerome ford they seem to like this college free agent robert henry jr as well
06:11that is you know it's i'm not telling their star power this is a reoccurring theme for the team
06:16he's not a great player per se the pecking order is likely to be bill first and second down rashad
06:21white on third down katron allen splitting some time as a thumper between the tackles mcnichols backing
06:26up rashad white maybe keep all four because mcnichols can play teams but they got a lot of
06:32guys all competing for touches at one area which i like if you can't have a star then you try
06:38to have
06:38complimentary and you make a thing a hydra or voltron right i mean that's kind of competition
06:42yeah elevate everybody by by pushing each other which which i like but the to me it's the complimentary
06:48skill set instead of just going let's do three katron allens and then whoever's got the hot hand i like
06:54that i like the diversity of skill set in there right where white is the pass catcher uh bill's
06:59kind of your you know six out of ten and a bunch of different attributes alan is downhill he's a
07:03thumper there's there's room for everybody at the table so i do like that the topic came up and you
07:07can't directly ask about a brandon iuke or stefan diggs because you're not going to get an answer but
07:12this notion that you could sign someone into camp and when does that due diligence and that work start
07:17the example given to dan quinn was last year you guys saw on von miller remember adam peters came out
07:23i was
07:23there at that press conference and he kind of announced you know what was going on and talked
07:27about von miller um coming to camp but how does that inform on what they're going to do at receiver
07:34with iuke if they make a move this was quinn yeah we're glad we signed on like like he brought
07:39a lot
07:39to our team the the knowledge intensity so we'd been visiting with him you know through the spring and
07:45um you know had chances to visit with him so that was more ongoing you know than just that time
07:51but
07:51um when it comes time for what do they add the value do they bring to the team what does
07:55that look
07:56like how would they feature in a role so it's not surprising for a team going through different
08:00stages to say okay they've gone through a spring where are they and even into training camp sometimes
08:06where that could change um for a certain veteran who can bring a certain specific skill set to a team
08:12and uh finding that right fits a big piece of it grant and danny on the fan minicamp day one
08:20of three
08:20tuesday through thursday out in ashburn this week for the commanders our double play is next what's
08:26going on in our lives nothing to do with sports at four o'clock the beltway blitz right here on
08:30the
