00:30And welcome again to the big match.
00:32And today we feature three teams running hard for the First Division Championship.
00:36Manchester City, the leaders, Arsenal and Spurs.
00:39Our main match though comes from White Hart Lane.
00:41Spurs against Stoke City.
00:44A dummy there by Chivers.
00:46Goes in.
00:46Now Perriman to hit one.
00:47All against the post.
00:49And the luckiest man in the world was Gordon Banks.
00:52Manchester City against Huddersfield.
00:56No offside.
00:57The whistle hasn't gone.
00:58Ipswich against Arsenal.
01:00George Graham over there.
01:01Kennedy with a shot.
01:02That's a great one.
01:04And indeed in that Ipswich match as well.
01:05One of the most remarkable and explosive incidents seen for a very long time.
01:09But first it's on with the main match.
01:11And we go to White Hart Lane where the visitors on a cold and a raw day were the League
01:16Cup finalist Stoke City.
01:18Spurs against Stoke.
01:19Two sides on their day really capable of the most attractive football.
01:23Let's catch up on the two teams.
01:25And first let's look at the Spurs side.
01:27It's at full strength with Steve Perryman fit again after a groin injury to return to number eight.
01:32That means that young Phil Holder drops down to substitute.
01:35So no problems there.
01:37But what a contrast for Stoke City.
01:39They come to Tottenham without Easton, Dobing, Ritchie, Marsh, Pejic and Bernard all injured.
01:45So it's a side that will bear little resemblance to the one that faces Chelsea at Wembley in a fortnight's
01:49time.
01:50Two great goalkeepers.
01:51Pat Jennings and Gordon Banks meeting before the battle.
01:53The referee is C. Nicholls of Plymouth and the crowd, 32,000 strong, now waiting for the first whistle.
02:02So Stoke City in their striped shirts of red and white and crippled by injuries, six of their normal first
02:09-team players are out of this game, defending the goal now to our right.
02:13And judging by the way Spurs' form has been lately, lost only one of their last nine games for this
02:19reshaped Stoke side, there could be quite a bit of defending this afternoon.
02:23It's Ray Evans now for Spurs.
02:27Gilzean's flick-off going straight to Jimmy Greenoff.
02:30And now Burrows playing his first game of the season, Conroy offside.
02:38The man who scored the winning goal against West Ham that put Stoke into the League Cup final in a
02:43fortnight's time.
02:53Peters.
02:56Good challenge there by Stevenson.
02:59But Stoke have given the ball away, England now.
03:01Peters again.
03:04Evans, a nice little flick by Peters.
03:06Two lovely pieces of skill by Peters.
03:07And a good ball now for Coates.
03:11A deep run towards Chivers, nodding it down.
03:14Morgan a fraction wide.
03:16But lovely understanding there by Spurs.
03:19Again started by Peters, taken up by Coates.
03:23Chivers, nice nod down.
03:24And number 11 Morgan just wide.
03:34Terry Conroy.
03:37Greenoff.
03:38Left for Conroy.
03:39And a good ball by Conroy now to Burrows.
03:42And Beal there was very quickly to cover the way back to Jennings.
03:46Too far ahead of Conroy.
03:56Very interesting piece of refereeing there.
03:58The referee was in the wrong sort of angle.
03:59He suspected a push on Chivers and looked to the linesman who kept the flag down.
04:04Perryman.
04:05Come on, Stoke.
04:07Chivers is offside.
04:20And so jump now to take the kick for Stoke.
04:37Beal and Conroy.
04:38Oh, and that's a dangerous back pass.
04:40In goes Greenoff.
04:41Turned across that goal.
04:42And England.
04:45Forced to put that behind.
04:47A slack back pass.
04:52Greenoff was very quick indeed to pounce on it and win the corner now.
04:59Harry Burrows to take it.
05:06Going off Perryman.
05:08It'll fall for Coates.
05:12Perryman.
05:15Inside for Coates again.
05:19Oh, the wrong ball.
05:21Played to Chivers when Gilzean and Peters were a much better proposition on his left.
05:31Perryman.
05:34And now Noles.
05:37Across again towards Gilzean who slipped his man for a moment.
05:40Morgan!
05:44Morgan shot.
05:45But some lovely work there by Alan Gilzean.
05:50Going towards that ball.
05:51Slipping his man and in fact taking it with his body to knock it down for Morgan's shot.
05:58Conroy to Willie Stevenson.
06:01So many good seasons with Liverpool before he went to Stoke.
06:07Conroy.
06:09Oh, what a nice little ball there.
06:11Conroy playing so well.
06:12Burrows hard across but straight at Perryman.
06:20Jump with his body but it's Gilzean.
06:22And Perryman again.
06:24Coates.
06:27Gilzean.
06:32Noles.
06:37Morgan.
06:40Noles who's linked up again and now found Martin Peters.
06:43Good move by Tottenham.
06:45And that looked like that ball by Smith.
06:47The Spurs crowd think it was but the referee has allowed it to go on.
06:52Unable to make the right sort of contact but Morgan fighting hard for the ball.
06:56And a Tottenham ball again.
07:07Peters.
07:09Morgan.
07:14Running into trouble again but it's another throw and Chivers has made a move out in that direction.
07:20So a rugby pass by Noles and it's a long throw again by Chivers.
07:27Gilzean with a backflick.
07:28Peters almost getting on the end of it.
07:30England is still right in there.
07:32Peters trying to turn it and down goes Banks.
07:41Jackson.
07:44The crowd has been fairly silent during these haphazard first 25 minutes or so.
07:49Letting themselves go a bit.
07:51And Wilso again.
07:55As Spurs now prepare to take this free kick.
07:57Ray Evans to take it.
08:00The big men again lined up on the far side of the Stoke penalty area.
08:03Curling beautifully towards Chivers.
08:05A glancing header which didn't strike home.
08:10Chivers who scored two goals in this corresponding match last season against Stoke when Spurs won 3-0.
08:15And one of those goals he claims was the best of his career.
08:18Alas no television cameras were there to record it.
08:28And now it's Noles.
08:33Old Peters in a nice lot of space.
08:35Morgan outside him.
08:37Or further on rather.
08:39A dummy there by Chivers.
08:41Gilzean.
08:41Alperriman to hit one.
08:43All the games to pose.
08:44And the luckiest man in the world was Gordon Banks.
08:47He'd given that up as loss from Perryman.
08:50And that ball whacked against the post.
08:53And straight back surprised into his arms.
09:15No wonder Gordon Banks a moment ago was saying his thanks to the goal post.
09:20That really was a remarkable piece of luck.
09:26Perryman.
09:27Oh a siding challenge there.
09:29On Perryman.
09:30By the number 8 Jackson which would have done him no good.
09:39Jump.
09:40To Bloor.
09:46Jennings.
09:49I'm not surprised he's hobbling after that one.
09:52Perhaps the only surprise is that the referee didn't have a word with the Stoke player.
09:57Morgan now.
10:01For Chivers now.
10:02Can he make this one count?
10:04And he can!
10:08Not in Chivers.
10:131-0.
10:17Beyond the reach of Banks.
10:22And for Chivers his 34th goal of the season.
10:42Evans.
10:46And the whistle against Martin Chivers this time for offside.
10:59Perriman in the thick of it again.
11:01Seems none the worse now for that challenge just before the goal.
11:04And a throw to Stoke.
11:13Stevenson really in the thick of it.
11:15Conroy who's played well so far for Stoke.
11:18And now Burrows.
11:24Going on is Harry Burrows.
11:27With a shot that's deflected off Beal.
11:29But Jennings stopping it going for the corner.
11:42Stevenson.
11:46Stevenson.
11:47Green off.
11:51And Morgan snapping away at him.
11:54England now.
11:57Back very coolly to Jennings.
11:59Wide of Conroy.
12:01Nicely placed ball there by Mike England.
12:07Gilzean.
12:11And Coates well offside.
12:18And Al-Gilzean.
12:22And Al-Gilzean.
12:37Chased by Burrows.
12:39And that bubble just as he tried to play it for Coates.
12:43No fault of Gilzean's there.
12:49England.
12:51Morgan.
12:53No.
12:56Nicely played ball there again for Roger Morgan.
12:59Fastest man.
13:01And Chivers waiting in the middle.
13:02And Chivers waiting in the middle.
13:03Peters steaming up fast as well.
13:04And Banks is there.
13:06Getting in between his two England colleagues.
13:09Peters and Chivers.
13:11England.
13:13Perriman.
13:13Perriman.
13:13And Beal.
13:16Good piece of defensive play there by Spurs.
13:18Good linking up now as it comes to Gilzean.
13:20And a lovely ball there again towards Martin Peters.
13:23His shot.
13:24Oh and he's wide with what would have been a tremendous goal.
13:29That really was wonderful team play by Tottenham.
13:33And that's gone towards Gordon Banks as the whistle goes for half time.
13:37With Stoke having in spite of all their crippling injuries come and fought very well.
13:41But the goal by Martin Chivers some eight minutes before half time separating these two sides.
13:47The half time score here at White Hart Lane is Spurs 1 Stoke City 0.
14:04Welcome back and now Spurs then get us away at the start of the second half.
14:08One nil ahead scored by Martin Chivers.
14:15Against a Stoke side so hard hit by injuries and although they fought well in the first half you still
14:19get the impression they're a side that really doesn't expect to win.
14:24Offside there given against Martin Chivers.
14:30And again a point about this pitch it really has drained remarkably well justifying every penny that Spurs have spent
14:36on it in the last couple of years.
14:37When you remember how it looked like Blackpool Sands for so long a couple of years ago.
14:47Burrows trying to turn it in for Green off but England there for Philip Beal.
14:52Perhaps taking a liberty there but England was there to help him.
14:58And another that game.
14:59The linesman on the far side flagging for Chivers offside.
15:02The crowd disagreeing with him.
15:16Conroy's determination winning that for him.
15:18Back to jump.
15:25And knows to turn it back to Pat Jennings.
15:40Smith off the head of Perryman and in fact that turned out to be a very good pass to Coates
15:46and he's shown too much of that to Willie Stevenson.
15:49I think trouble getting off Stevenson's back and I think the free kick in fact has been given.
15:55No it's yes a free kick's been given to Tottenham.
16:07Evans with it.
16:09Gilzean to flick it on.
16:12And Stoke getting it away.
16:14Conroy versus Evans.
16:15Conroy going with a lot of pace there.
16:17And Evans really forced to chase him hard.
16:20Still Conroy.
16:20Turned back again and behind.
16:25Greenhoff in fact claiming that that came off Beal's hands.
16:30But a lovely run by the number 10 Terry Conroy.
16:35And certainly flashes of his form this afternoon should be a warning to all Chelsea fans who are watching with
16:41Wembley in mind.
16:43Gordon Banks busy at the other end but here's the corner with Harry Burrows.
16:48And the whistle goes before Greenhoff can get that header in.
16:53Evans and Smith.
16:56Evans again.
16:58And Chivers delicately laying that off for Marty Peters.
17:01Morgan now with skills to harass him.
17:07And the corner to Tottenham.
17:16So Alan Gilzean taking his usual position at the near post.
17:19Morgan again with the corner.
17:20Floated towards Gilzean.
17:21Tried to back flick.
17:22Got it across again.
17:23And Peters couldn't believe that was at his feet.
17:31Suddenly came through a crowd of players to Marty Peters.
17:33A yard off the goal line.
17:39Banks might have been in trouble there.
17:51Straight to Evans from Greenhoff.
17:55Noles.
18:00Skills.
18:01A lot of examples this afternoon of players playing the ball very skillfully on their body as Eric Skills did
18:06then.
18:07Here's Skills now with the throw.
18:11Ponroy.
18:13Hazelgrave.
18:13Neatly past Perryman.
18:14Not the easiest man to pass.
18:17Stephenson.
18:18With that long range-y stride.
18:21Burrows.
18:26And Stoke get the corner.
18:29No, it's a throw.
18:33Beal.
18:35Allowing it to go for the goal kick.
18:39Quarter of an hour.
18:40The second half gone.
18:41And Spurs still leading by that goal after 37 minutes from Martin Chivers.
18:46Jogging up and down.
18:48Keeping warm rather than being at the moment exhilarated by what they're seeing.
18:57Chivers now.
18:58Can he slip Smith?
18:59It looks as though he might do.
19:01Still Chivers.
19:02Oh, and he's wide.
19:07Lovely break though by Chivers and that must have had Banks really worried.
19:14Shook off Dennis Smith so well.
19:23Coates with the header.
19:27Evans now.
19:29Peters making a very late run there.
19:31Gilzeen jumping as well.
19:32But Banks never for a moment taking his eye off the ball.
19:41Morgan.
19:44Chivers.
19:46Knowles has gone down the left for him.
19:48Played first time there towards Gilzeen.
19:50He couldn't quite lift himself.
19:53And the Stoke substitute on the far side beginning to warm up.
19:56John Mahoney.
20:02And he's not fully fit.
20:03That's how hard this injury crisis has hit Stoke City.
20:07And it's Harry Burrows going off.
20:12Mahoney.
20:13In fact, there's Burrows going off.
20:17And Mahoney who scored both goals, in fact, when Stoke beat Spurs earlier this season up at the Victoria Brown.
20:30Evans.
20:33Oh, and Evans going on, taking advantage of his little bit of luck there.
20:36Gilzeen turning in again for Ray Evans.
20:39Might well be crowded out though.
20:46And they want Phil Holder on, the substitute for Spurs.
20:50And he's on.
20:54And it's Alan Gilzeen going off into the dressing room straight away.
20:59He was even too quick for our cameraman.
21:01That's how quickly he went off.
21:07Scales back to Banks.
21:10Oh, Banks.
21:11Oh, I think he was accidentally kicked at the back there by Chivers.
21:14Certainly there was nothing intentional.
21:15Chivers was bounding after Banks.
21:18As Banks was rolling that ball away.
21:23And Banks really caught it on the back of the leg.
21:29No, it would be the back of the leg either.
21:35No, a little higher than the back of the leg.
21:43I was going to say we've seen it all, but not quite.
21:48But the crowd enjoyed that.
21:50A little bit of showmanship there from Gordon Banks.
21:54Fit again and ready to take the kick.
21:57Now ten minutes to go.
22:04Mahoney.
22:05To Conroy.
22:06Mahoney again.
22:09Green off.
22:13Hazelgrave in the middle there, but well watched all the while.
22:16And a back pass there by little Phil Holder that very nearly brought an own goal.
22:28Chivers.
22:29And Peters.
22:31And now Morgan.
22:33Noles has gone thundering down the left for him.
22:39On to the right foot.
22:41Coates at the far side.
22:42Knotted down nicely.
22:43Oh, and a great shot by Holder.
22:51Conroy's header.
22:53Jackson.
22:57And a free kick given to Stoke City.
23:00Conroy not annoyed with the decision, but the fact that he was pulled back when he had possession.
23:11And now Jackson.
23:12And now Jackson.
23:17So it's going to be the number seven.
23:19Hazelgrave with it.
23:22And Holder getting there above the lot of them to get it away for Tottenham.
23:32Now, Chivers versus two.
23:35Morgan to back him up.
23:38Hitting a long one.
23:41And Banks, very confident indeed, let that one go.
23:44But there really wasn't too much to spare at the end because it was dipping all the time.
23:50But who's any commentator to tell him how to do his job?
23:54The world's number one.
24:09Hazelgrave losing it, though, to Peters.
24:12Perryman again.
24:14Off Peters to Knowles.
24:16Played for Peters again with Morgan outside him.
24:20Perryman.
24:21Oh, that's going to be difficult to hold.
24:26Oh, that's going to be difficult.
24:31Oh, that's going to be difficult.
24:33Oh, that's going to be difficult.
24:34Conroy.
24:37And now Perryman.
24:40Holder.
24:44Very coolie there to Mike England.
24:47And now Beal.
24:50Morgan.
24:53Oh, he very nearly had it open.
24:55For Knowles.
24:56And he was a little unlucky there, Morgan.
24:58But now it's Conroy.
25:08Stevenson.
25:09With a shot.
25:10And that very nearly caught Jennings out.
25:12He had to react and change his direction at the last moment from Stevenson.
25:18Cyril Knowles now.
25:26Nicely controlled pass there to Chivers, but Holder then giving it away again.
25:34Jackson.
25:38Blore.
25:40Mahoney.
25:41Over on the left, Hazelgrave.
25:46Oh, he's got a chance of a shot here, but he was balked at the last by Holder.
25:50And now Coates.
25:53Evans.
25:55And away goes Chivers, and he's onside.
26:07Stevenson back now to jump.
26:11Coming towards the last couple of minutes now.
26:14And Stoke with Jackson.
26:23Jackson.
26:23Smith.
26:25A long ball forward towards Greenoff.
26:27And England again winning that ball in the air, as he's done so often this afternoon.
26:31Knowles.
26:32Not keeping it in.
26:33And Stoke's throw.
26:39Jackson.
26:43Although their performance has not been particularly impressive, they could be two very valuable points for Spurs.
26:49Still haven't completely lost touch at the top, and Smith getting Coates in the face there.
26:57His feet undoubtedly very high there, Dennis Smith.
27:00And the Spurs players are complaining to the referee, Nicholls, that he ought to have done something about it.
27:07It looks like Coates all right.
27:12And a free kick to Tottenham.
27:14Mike England putting it back to Pat Jennings.
27:18Playing injury time now, but they've got to wait for the Spurs trainer to get off the field.
27:24And now Conroy blocking that back pass to Pat Jennings.
27:28So England will take a more positive free kick this time.
27:34Chivers all right.
27:35But he won't get to it.
27:36Banks will.
27:37Now Chivers.
27:38Yes.
27:39Number two for Tottenham.
27:41Martin Chivers second.
27:43In the dying seconds, Banks.
27:45It looked as though Banks had got it.
27:47But somehow Chivers wrestled it away out of his grasp.
27:51And then had the symptoms of Jobs to turn it home.
28:01So it seemed when the game would drag into a dull finish,
28:07Chivers gives everybody something to talk about on the way home.
28:11Both goals from Martin Chivers.
28:14And now it's Hazelgrave.
28:24Knowles.
28:29Played for Beal.
28:31For Knowles again.
28:34Morgan.
28:38And Knowles down the left.
28:39And he's still there with it.
28:41But the whistle has gone before he can put it across.
28:44They don't know.
28:45But the final whistle is long since gone.
28:47And Martin Chivers with those two goals after 37 minutes.
28:50And in the very last minute of this game.
28:52Has made it comfortable for Stoke.
28:55Gordon Banks I suppose a little disappointed.
28:56But two big matches coming up for him.
28:58With the cup tie against Hull next week.
29:00And the League Cup final at Wembley the week after that.
29:03And so a handshake from the linesmen for the world's number one.
29:07And a full time score here at White Hart Lane.
29:09That reads Spurs 2 Stoke 0.
29:23So Spurs without really playing well chalk up a valuable win.
29:26But they are still six points behind the leaders.
29:28Manchester City who you'll also see on the programme today against Huddersfield.
29:31And just to remind you that the third match today is Ipswich against Arsenal.
29:35But now to take a closer look at Spurs against Stoke.
29:37Jimmy.
29:38Well I've had one or two people saying to me lately that I always say the match is a good
29:42match on the day afterwards.
29:44And that I never say it's a bad one.
29:45Well here I go now saying that yesterday's match wasn't a very good one.
29:49In fact it was a bad one.
29:50With a host of missed passes.
29:52And players doing things that they probably couldn't believe themselves.
29:55The fans were elated one minute and very miserable the next.
29:59But all matches bring up some kind of instance.
30:02Yesterday there was an appeal for a penalty.
30:04All the Spurs fans who were there at any rate thought that Dennis Smith had in fact handled the ball
30:09when it was crossed by Cyril Knowles.
30:11And they should have had a penalty earlier on in the game.
30:12Let's have a look at that now and clear it up.
30:14There's Cyril Knowles typically up the left wing.
30:17And you can see there Dennis Smith.
30:19The ball comes a bit behind him.
30:21And does he try and pull his hand out of the way or does he try and control the ball
30:24which in fact he does with it.
30:26I would say there that he was very lucky not to get away and have a with a penalty.
30:30But more than that Spurs produced flashes and they were only flashes of the kind of football which we know
30:35they can produce.
30:36There was one really beautiful movement initiated by Cyril Knowles.
30:41A man who one minute the crowd are cheering and the next minute they're moaning at.
30:44But this time he showed for a full back particularly what a football brain he has.
30:49Beal plays it out to him here and it's he who looks up and sees the opening.
30:53Decides to quicken the game up.
30:55Flashes through on the left wing and lays on that perfect chance for Martin Peters.
30:59But Martin Peters I think thought it was such a good chance he panicked a little bit and missed the
31:04goal.
31:04But Martin Peters still hadn't given up an idea of scoring a goal at the end of the match when
31:09most people had.
31:10They were one up.
31:11There's Martin Chivers alongside him and he's saying to Mike England give us the ball because there's still time to
31:17get another one.
31:18And in fact that's what happened in the dying minutes of the game and it gave us a chance to
31:22see that Banks is human.
31:24There's the long ball.
31:26Gordon Banks comes out for it.
31:27Gets there first.
31:28But you see it's that knee that knocks the ball clear.
31:31And in fact Chivers is able to hook it out and quite clearly Banks hasn't got a hand on the
31:36ball.
31:36If he had of course it would have been dangerous play and the goal wouldn't have stood.
31:40But there you are Martin Chivers makes those things so easy to perform and maybe it wasn't as easy as
31:46that.
31:46But Gordon Banks of course will be looking at that today with some kind of sorrow.
31:50What about the man of the match?
31:51Well for me he's the man of the match and a bit of a warning to Chelsea for two weeks
31:55time for the Football League Cup final.
31:57Terry Conroy plus his mate Greenhoff are a real threat.
32:01They've both got pace and they've both got a lot of skill.
32:03And they showed it yesterday even though the Stokes side was clearly very weakened with reserves.
32:09Here right from the throwout, from Banks' throwout Greenhoff picks the ball up and spreads it out to the left
32:14wing.
32:14The two of them are a dangerous combination.
32:17Once again Greenhoff using his speed to pressurise Jennings, but no other forwards up there to turn it to advantage.
32:24Conroy has all the skills in the book and a lot of determination.
32:27Watch how he traps this ball from that distance and then spots the pass to his friend Greenhoff and then
32:34spreads it out to Harry Burrows on the left wing.
32:37They seem to have a telepathic understanding between the two of them.
32:41They play very well together.
32:43When the ball's clear from defence here, you'll see without looking how Greenhoff's able to find Conroy with that flick.
32:49And also Conroy's skill as he's under pressure to pass accurately out to the left wing.
32:56And now we pick up Conroy again, first of all starting the move, then finding space down the line.
33:02He moves out into space on the left wing, a lesson here for players, how to make space.
33:07Tricks Beale by coming inside and then lets Burrows slip to the byline to make that pass for the final
33:13cross.
33:14But he's a very determined player.
33:16This is what he's great strength, speed, power, determination, the skill of a juggler, and he won't give up.
33:21And there, he's very annoyed because he still wanted to carry on with the ball and he's annoyed because, in
33:25fact, he was given a free kick.
33:27Maybe he was lucky not to have his name taken for showing dissent there, but it was quite a performance
33:32from Conroy in a weakened Stoke side.
33:33So there's a lesson for Chelsea for a couple of weeks to come.
33:36But what about Spurs?
33:38They're still in a position where they could win the Championship.
33:41The question is, can they?
33:42Well, for me, I wouldn't like to put any money on it.
33:46And after Jimmy Hill, more action now.
33:48And we go to the league leaders at Manchester City.
33:50I don't know whether you saw it yesterday and on the ball in World of Sport.
33:53But Malcolm Addison, their manager, said, we now sense we're going to win the Championship.
33:57Well, let's have one or two brief glimpses of Manchester City in their match against Huddersfield yesterday.
34:01Pictures from Granada, commentator Gerald Sinstadt, and Manchester City are wearing the white shorts.
34:11One for Davis to chase.
34:14And Cherry got in the clearance, albeit off the body of Davis.
34:18Goal is headed for Somerby.
34:20Goal is headed for Somerby.
34:21Lee.
34:23And he's checked and it's...
34:25What has he given?
34:27Outside the area.
34:29Well, that astonishes me.
34:32Lee.
34:33He's got it!
34:34No!
34:35Off the goalkeeper's body.
34:37Hill.
34:41Towers.
34:43Davis laying it down for Lee.
34:46Lee's shot!
34:56Lee bouncing back to his feet, but losing possession.
35:01Tackled by Book.
35:03Scooped cut to Somerby.
35:06They deep for Davis.
35:09And away for a corner by Cherry.
35:17Bit of enthusiasm from the main road crowd.
35:21So they don't get as much of this as they could do with.
35:28Booth can't get there, but Lee might.
35:30Davis!
35:31It's Booth!
35:33Tommy Booth!
35:37It all starts from this corner, and it doesn't reach Davis' head.
35:41The overhead, and the second overhead is from Booth.
35:44The last person you'd expect to see scoring a goal like that,
35:48but he really took it very well indeed.
35:50His third goal of the season.
35:55So a spectacular goal that was enough to give Manchester City victory
35:58and keep them at the top of the first of it.
36:09Now it's time for some more action,
36:10and for that we have Arsenal's visit yesterday to Ipswich.
36:13Arsenal, of course, in a position now
36:14where they can give absolutely nothing away near the top,
36:17either at home or in their away games as well.
36:19Indeed, they were efficient enough yesterday
36:21in a hard and sometimes bitter match.
36:23The commentators, Gerry Harrison,
36:25the pictures come from Anglia,
36:26Arsenal in the shirts with the white sleeves.
36:28Looking for support on the left from Armstrong.
36:30Ball going towards the near post.
36:33Kennedy on the far post, but it's all over.
36:36It's a free kick.
36:43So a lot of Ipswich players coming back now.
36:45Every one of them, in fact.
36:48See Clark going over there, number 10 to line the wall up.
36:51Kennedy is a far man.
36:54Alan Ball just to the left of the wall,
36:57as we look at it.
36:59Pat Rice, the fullback,
37:01is right over there on the far side.
37:02So it's George who can really hammer them.
37:05George Graham going for it first.
37:08Now Kelly got off Clark.
37:10Picked up by McClintock.
37:11Chance to pump it back in again
37:12with the man coming over on the far side.
37:15And he's there!
37:16It's a great goal!
37:19Charlie George!
37:26Charlie George right in the action again.
37:30The kick cleared, but not cleared far enough.
37:34And George Best, David Best,
37:37left with absolutely no chance
37:39without hella from Charlie George.
37:40So that's another goal
37:42for this extraordinary 21-year-old.
37:45Hunter coming strongly to this.
37:47going through two players to get to it.
37:49Hunter again from Armstrong.
37:51Off of Armstrong to George.
37:52Armstrong going wide on the left.
37:54George going to attack a player.
37:56Trying one.
37:57A great shot!
38:00It is George Graham.
38:03Straight to Peter Morrison.
38:04Lember wants one on the left.
38:05He gets it.
38:08Here's Robertson.
38:09What a good one.
38:10Lember finding it difficult at the moment
38:12to get into the speed of this game,
38:14which indeed is incredible.
38:15Here's Alan Ball now
38:16with Armstrong free on the left.
38:17Mills going to cover him,
38:19but it's two against one out there
38:20with Nelson helping.
38:21There's Nelson on the left.
38:23Armstrong coming on his own.
38:28But the support running
38:29for these Arsenal players is incredible.
38:31He had a choice of one or two there,
38:33and with Ipswich defenders not quite sure which way to go.
38:37He chose to go on his own
38:38and wasn't far off it either.
38:40Viljon coming across to help.
38:43Viljon again is under pressure from Armstrong, though.
38:45And forced to get it away.
38:46And George is in well there.
38:47Jefferson with a tackle,
38:48but picked up by Kelly to Alan Ball
38:50with Nelson on his left.
38:54Kennedy coming towards the near post.
38:58Harper to the rescue.
39:00In fact, according to the Arsenal tradition,
39:02that was a little bit of laziness,
39:04a rare bit of laziness,
39:05because nobody came to challenge him for that one.
39:10Quick corner then.
39:11The fourth of the game,
39:12well into the fourth minute of injury time
39:13of the first half.
39:15George Graham too strong,
39:16but Kennedy with a volley just over.
39:20And Armstrong, as ever.
39:22Charlie George with leap for the control.
39:27Good ball to McClintock,
39:29breaking on there.
39:30With Kennedy making for the far post,
39:32here's Kennedy.
39:34Running under Mills' foot.
39:35Kennedy missing it too.
39:38Here's Nelson now.
39:40A lot more Arsenal players up now.
39:42George Graham.
39:43McClintock is right over there.
39:45Got to get a chance to pull one back to Paul.
39:52Well, he couldn't quite get a good shot in,
39:54but again,
39:55this evidence of how Arsenal players
39:57will go up in support,
39:58and this time,
39:59it was the captain,
40:01Frank McClintock,
40:02who was all the way up there.
40:13Simpson and Belfit.
40:16To Robertson.
40:19Lambert and Clark on the far post,
40:21but again,
40:22the cross is not getting over properly.
40:23Ball in there.
40:25Elbowed off it by Viljon.
40:26Clay on.
40:27It's Robertson.
40:29It's Lambert.
40:30What a tackle from Rice.
40:31Lambert now.
40:33Oh,
40:33the side netting.
40:35A deflection.
40:37One wonders where that was going
40:38before the shot.
40:40McClintock now,
40:41we're running into trouble
40:42against Lambert,
40:42and he was a little bit unlucky
40:43not to get the break,
40:44but Belfit does.
40:45Here's Colin Viljon.
40:47And a ricochet.
40:49And again,
40:50one can't tell where they had gone
40:51had the ricochet not diverted it.
40:54Another corner then for Ebbs,
40:55with tremendous pressure now.
40:58Robertson to take it.
41:00Hunter and Jefferson at the back of the box.
41:02Harper is there too.
41:04Woods is on the goal line
41:06with goalkeeper Wilson.
41:07McClintock!
41:09McClintock!
41:10McClintock!
41:11McClintock!
41:11Here's Robertson.
41:12McClintock!
41:14Hunter getting up.
41:16Bill John.
41:17Is it there?
41:18It's over the line,
41:20according to the linesman.
41:22And my word,
41:23it's a rugby strung.
41:23You've never seen anything like that
41:25at Twickenham.
41:28And Wilson is still on the goal line
41:30with the ball.
41:32In all that melee,
41:35the goalkeeper Wilson
41:36stands back
41:37with the ball
41:39and does nothing.
41:46The only one who doesn't seem
41:48at all concerned by it all.
41:54But what happened there
41:56is anybody's guess.
41:58Flesh and blood
41:59disguising the real incident.
42:04But undoubtedly,
42:05it's a free kick now.
42:15Kennedy and Hunter.
42:17Hunter gets it
42:17by the wrong way.
42:18Jefferson nearly losing
42:19his head there.
42:21Armstrong punching it forward.
42:23For Kennedy.
42:25Charlie George coming
42:26to help him,
42:28but there's George Graham
42:29over there.
42:29Kennedy with a shot.
42:30That was a great one.
42:36George in the way.
42:40And the referee
42:41wanted to have a word with him.
42:43But as far as Arsenal
42:45are concerned,
42:46things are working out
42:48absolutely perfectly for him.
42:50Into the second minute
42:51of injury time.
42:52And again off Charlie George.
42:53George and this time
42:54he's going into the book.
42:56Less than 10 yards away.
42:58The second time.
43:02Despite the protests
43:03of the Arsenal players,
43:07it's George
43:08into the book.
43:10So the goal scorer
43:13and looks like the man
43:15who's won the points
43:16for Arsenal,
43:18the second man
43:19to go into
43:20Mr. Thacker's book.
43:24And whatever you do,
43:26you can't keep
43:26Charlie George
43:27out of the headlines.
43:28But was he
43:29or was he not
43:3010 yards away?
43:31And he goes back
43:31into the exact same position.
43:34And another one.
43:36And this time
43:37the referee lets it go
43:38and surely
43:39that can't be right.
43:41If it was wrong
43:41the first time,
43:42it was wrong
43:42the second time.
43:44Yes, a good point
43:45which we must investigate
43:46because if it was
43:46a priceless win
43:47for Arsenal,
43:48it was also achieved
43:48in the most
43:49controversial circumstances.
43:50And here to look
43:51at one or two
43:52of those incidents,
43:52Jimmy Hill again.
43:53The tragedy for me
43:54is that referees
43:55seem to have lost
43:56the resolution,
43:57not only in this match
43:58but in other matches
43:58I've seen recently
43:59to apply the laws
44:01as strictly as they were
44:02at the start of the season
44:02and this is bad for football.
44:04Even with regard
44:05to encroaching,
44:06you can say
44:06that the referee
44:07quite rightly
44:07took Charlie George's name
44:09for encroaching
44:10to within 10 yards
44:11at a free kick.
44:11But having had
44:12his name taken,
44:14why for the life of me
44:15I cannot understand
44:16that he didn't send him off
44:17immediately after
44:18for standing
44:19what was four yards
44:21at the most
44:21away from the ball
44:22from that free kick.
44:23So there's one thing
44:24that we look at
44:25in that game.
44:25What about the incident
44:26in the goal mouth?
44:27There, there was
44:28violent kicking
44:29and it didn't seem to me
44:30that anybody had
44:30their name taken
44:31for that either.
44:32And I ask,
44:33where are we going?
44:34The fans appreciate
44:35clean football
44:36and are flocking back
44:37in their thousands
44:38to watch it.
44:39Why should these things
44:40still be allowed
44:41to go on unpunished
44:42on a football field?
44:43Just look at it now.
44:45When Bob Wilson
44:46collects the ball
44:46he has it clearly
44:47in his hands,
44:48there's no question
44:49about that,
44:49and Colin Viljian
44:50comes in
44:51and without any doubt
44:53kicks into the lot.
44:54Now that is dangerous
44:55play and violent play.
44:56Now look at Charlie George
44:57as he kicks Viljian there
44:59helping him nicely
45:00to the floor
45:01and there's another
45:01boot going in there
45:03in Viljian
45:04who maybe was
45:04the original culprit.
45:06But at the end of that
45:07whatever the referee did
45:08I don't think he took
45:09anybody's name
45:10the whole thing
45:11went unpunished
45:12and he said
45:12what can you can do
45:13in incidents like that?
45:14Well I know what I'd do
45:15I'd send people off
45:16who kick people
45:17as violently
45:17as those players did.
45:19Well we could hardly
45:20have a stronger
45:21or more controversial
45:22end to the programme
45:22than that.
45:23That's all this week
45:23hope you've enjoyed it
45:24remember cup ties again
45:25next week
45:26but we leave you today
45:27with three sides
45:28of Gordon Banks
45:29first the surprising
45:30fallibility of the man
45:32this time
45:35Chivers alright
45:36but he won't get to it
45:37Banks will
45:37now Chivers
45:38yes
45:39number two
45:41for Tottenham
45:41we show you again
45:43the luck of Gordon Banks
45:50and last of all
45:51the cheek of Gordon Banks
45:53we show you again
46:23we show you again
46:26we show you again
