00:48Michael's life and story
00:49is just one among many stories
00:51of vulnerable kids,
00:52preyed upon and covered up
00:54by an organization bent on hiding the truth.
00:57He told me just in little increments
00:59that it wasn't just one time
01:01that it happened,
01:02that there were other occasions
01:03that it happened.
01:04All hidden by a controversial society
01:06of Catholic priests,
01:08proving itself no different
01:09from scores of other dioceses
01:11it looks down on,
01:12all while draping itself
01:13in the pomp of traditional Catholicism,
01:16covering over a network of lies
01:18spanning continents,
01:19and now the focus
01:20of a nearly year-long criminal investigation,
01:23details that have been shared
01:25with church militant for months.
01:41Father Ramon Anglis,
01:43an influential priest
01:44in the SSPX,
01:46a breakaway Catholic sect
01:48with its own hierarchy
01:49and society of clergy
01:50throughout the world,
01:51adherence to the traditional Latin Mass,
01:53and largely rejecting
01:54the church's Second Vatican Council.
01:56It was Anglis
01:58who Michael Gonzalez identified
01:59as having sodomized him
02:01when he was 14 years old,
02:03confiding his terrible secret
02:04to his oldest sister.
02:05And then finally,
02:07like, he broke down one day
02:08and he just started crying
02:09and he told me who it was.
02:10And he had confided in me
02:13and told me it was Father Anglis.
02:15The serial abuse changed young Michael,
02:17causing him to turn in on himself,
02:20even skipping his eighth-grade graduation
02:21from St. Mary's Academy
02:23in St. Mary's, Kansas.
02:24The camp is seen in this footage,
02:26taken by a former student
02:27in the late 1980s.
02:29I noticed a huge change in him
02:31when he didn't even show up
02:33for his graduation.
02:34Like, we all showed up
02:36for his graduation
02:37and he didn't even show up for it.
02:40And I noticed that day
02:42that his behavior changed,
02:44his mannerisms changed,
02:47and he really shut down.
02:50The abuse destroyed Michael,
02:52leading to a life of alcoholism,
02:54depression,
02:55and a confused sexuality.
02:57Ultimately, he took his life.
02:59He wasn't able to cope with it.
03:01It was a downward spiral.
03:04He never finished high school.
03:07He was just getting in trouble
03:08after that
03:09and he just couldn't deal with it.
03:11On the night of February 18, 2000,
03:13Michael, unable to cope any further,
03:17called his ex-girlfriend.
03:18And while they were on the phone,
03:22my brother ended up saying
03:23that he was going to kill himself
03:24and the people that he was living with,
03:28he got a hold of a gun
03:29and shot himself in the mouth
03:31and ended his life.
03:33Teresa recalls how odd it was
03:35that years earlier,
03:37right around the time of Michael's abuse,
03:39Father Angles canceled
03:40almost $20,000 of debt
03:42her family owed to St. Mary's Academy.
03:45Because I remember my mom saying,
03:46oh, we don't owe the college
03:48any money anymore.
03:49And I was like, oh, that's neat.
03:50So one day I'm kind of going through
03:53cleaning up the house
03:54and I found this letter from,
03:57that says all of your debt is canceled
04:01if you do not speak badly
04:03about the academy
04:04and what has happened here.
04:06The letter was signed,
04:08Father Angles.
04:09Kurt Tioni,
04:10who taught at St. Mary's Academy
04:12in the late 1980s,
04:13remembers the terrible secret
04:15Michael confided to him
04:16all those years ago
04:17when Michael was a student.
04:19And he said,
04:20well, it was one of the priests
04:21here at the school.
04:22One of the SSPX priests.
04:24Yes, one of the SSPX priests.
04:25And I tried to get him
04:28to tell me which one it was,
04:30but he wouldn't tell me.
04:32Kurt reported the crime to Angles,
04:35having no idea it was Angles himself
04:37who was the alleged perpetrator.
04:39He also went to the police,
04:41many of whom had close ties
04:43to the SSPX and who blew him off.
04:45And he was very angry with me.
04:47He said, if you believe anything
04:48that kid says, you're crazy.
04:50You know, you need to worry
04:52about your job here
04:54and quit getting involved
04:55with, you know, other things like this.
04:58And he was very angry with me.
05:00Two weeks later,
05:01Kurt was fired.
05:02And it wasn't too long after that
05:04that I was let go,
05:05that I was told I could not
05:06come back the following year,
05:08that my contract had been rescinded,
05:09even though I was offered a contract
05:11for the following year.
05:13So what reasons did they give
05:15for not renewing your contract?
05:16No reason,
05:18nor would they give me any reasons.
05:19Fast forward almost 30 years.
05:22A Kansas State investigator
05:23contacted Kurt to speak with him
05:25about the rape of Michael Gonzalez.
05:27Part of a much larger
05:28statewide investigation of sex abuse
05:30and cover up by the SSPX,
05:33with a focal point being
05:34St. Mary's, Kansas,
05:36a serene, picturesque community
05:37of faithful Catholics
05:39all supporting the SSPX,
05:42many unaware that it is a bastion
05:44of corruption, abuse, and cover up,
05:47deceiving them for decades
05:48about many of the priests
05:50who have passed through here
05:51that they know.
05:52And he said,
05:54what if I told you
05:55that it was Father Angles?
05:58And I said,
05:59I would totally believe it.
06:01And then he told me
06:02about the suicide note
06:03that had been left and so forth.
06:04So he had said
06:06that it was Father Angles
06:07that had raped him.
06:08Looking back,
06:09there were clues.
06:10In addition to recalling
06:12that Father Angles
06:12would lurk around
06:13the Gonzalez family,
06:15Kurt recalls the priest
06:16also surrounded himself
06:17with his favorite group of boys.
06:19He always had
06:20what we used to always call
06:22his harem of boys,
06:24of his favorite boys,
06:27which I, again,
06:28rang a bell on my head too
06:30on that one.
06:31It's like, why?
06:32And it was only boys
06:34and never girls.
06:37Another eyewitness
06:38testifies to Angles' cover-up
06:40of sexual grooming.
06:41In 1989,
06:42Father John Rizzo,
06:43a former priest of the SSPX
06:46who frequently visited
06:47St. Mary's
06:47from his SSPX assignment
06:49in Idaho,
06:50got a call
06:51from a distraught mother
06:52after her 15-year-old son
06:53received a love letter
06:54from an older male teacher
06:56at the academy.
06:57So one Sunday evening
06:58when I arrived,
06:59the parents of this
07:00particular student
07:01came to me
07:02and showed me
07:03what was truly
07:04a love letter,
07:05the male teacher
07:07saying,
07:07oh, I love your looks.
07:10It's great to look upon you
07:12when I'm sitting there
07:14or when I'm standing there
07:15in the classroom
07:16and seeing you
07:17in the classroom.
07:18Rizzo immediately called up
07:19Father Angles
07:20to report the sexual grooming.
07:22Father Angles got on the phone.
07:25I read him the contents
07:26of the letter
07:27and he expressed shock.
07:29He apologized
07:30and I said,
07:32please remove this teacher,
07:33Father.
07:34He should be removed yesterday.
07:36And he said to me,
07:37Father Rizzo,
07:38I will take care of it.
07:40But within a few hours,
07:42Rizzo was on the receiving end
07:43of Angles' venom,
07:45receiving a fax from him
07:46accusing him of lying
07:47and promising to run him
07:49out of town.
07:50And it was sent
07:51by Father Angles
07:53and a letter was written
07:54in Latin
07:55accusing me of lying
07:57and how dare I interrupt
07:59his good work
08:00at St. Mary's Academy.
08:02Shame on me
08:03type of thing.
08:04And I don't like your lies.
08:06And furthermore,
08:08I will have you removed
08:09in the near future.
08:10Within six months,
08:12Rizzo was removed
08:13from his assignment
08:13in Idaho.
08:14The district superior
08:15actually said to me
08:17that more or less
08:18it was because of
08:19the machinations
08:20of Father Angles.
08:21The corruption
08:22and climate of intimidation
08:24and cover-up
08:25is one of the major reasons
08:26Rizzo eventually left
08:27the SSPX.
08:30Even more bizarre,
08:31Rizzo was eyewitness
08:33to Angles' fascination
08:34with Adolf Hitler.
08:35Having special regard
08:37for a particular book,
08:38The Life and Death
08:40of Adolf Hitler.
08:41He proceeded to parade
08:42around his coffee table
08:44making the noise
08:46ching, ching,
08:47ching, ching,
08:48which would be the noise
08:49of a terrible
08:50or incenser,
08:51you know,
08:52striking the chain
08:53of the incense.
08:54So, in other words,
08:55he got across the idea
08:57and that suggested
08:58that you use
08:59an amass for the gospel.
09:02While Angles has
09:03in the past
09:03denied the allegations,
09:04multiple eyewitnesses
09:06testified to his fascination
09:08with the Nazis,
09:09including Mark Giannelloni,
09:11Ted Remarque,
09:12and Joseph Souther.
09:13All former students
09:14at St. Mary's Academy
09:15invited to watch
09:16the Nazi propaganda film
09:18Triumph of the Will
09:19in Angles' office
09:21in May of 1990.
09:23Souther wrote
09:24in a 1992 letter,
09:25quote,
09:25The fact is,
09:27he did show Triumph
09:28of the Will
09:28to myself
09:29and a friend with me.
09:31I also have witnesses
09:32who were present
09:33when Father Angles
09:33asked me
09:34if I would like
09:35to watch it,
09:36along with having pizza.
09:37They have come forward
09:38and are prepared
09:39to back me up
09:40on all of this.
09:41One student said to me
09:43that he actually went there
09:44to see it,
09:46that he felt uncomfortable
09:47and he left.
09:48He said,
09:48that priest is a weirdo.
09:51Those same students
09:52confirmed they saw
09:53Nazi memorabilia
09:54in Angles' office,
09:55including ceremonial daggers
09:57worn by high SS officials,
09:59a book written
10:00by a Waffen SS colonel
10:01with a signed dedication
10:02to Father Angles,
10:04and stacks
10:05of anti-Semitic literature.
10:07The priest also boasted
10:08of his family's ties
10:09to the Nazis.
10:11In spite of all this,
10:12Angles was promoted
10:13to District Superior
10:15in Ireland,
10:16during which time
10:17he was also appointed
10:18to the high-ranking role
10:19of Judicial Counselor
10:21for the SSPX
10:22and canonical advisor
10:24to then Superior General
10:25Bishop Bernard Fillet.
10:27While in Ireland,
10:29Angles was also accused
10:30of abusing a boy,
10:32afterwards running off
10:33to Italy.
10:34He's now serving
10:35as administrator
10:35of the palatial
10:36Castelgambiano in Lombardy,
10:39far from the reach
10:40of criminal prosecutors
10:41in Ireland or America,
10:43under the protection
10:44of his SSPX superiors
10:46who refused to hand him
10:47over for justice.
10:48While his victims live out
10:50their shattered lives,
10:51those victims
10:52who are still living.
10:54But Angles is only one
10:56among multiple SSPX clergy
10:58now under a statewide
10:59criminal probe
11:00for sexual grooming,
11:02rape, pederasty,
11:04and other crimes,
11:05with the cover-up reaching
11:06to the highest levels
11:08of leadership.
11:08From St. Mary's, Kansas,
11:11to Eugene, Oregon,
11:12to Post Falls, Idaho,
11:14to Belgium, France,
11:16the Philippines,
11:17and beyond,
11:18all around the globe,
11:19the SSPX has covered up
11:21numerous cases of sex abuse
11:23over decades,
11:24much of it kept hidden
11:25because whistleblowers
11:26say they're punished
11:27and victims shamed.
11:29But eyewitnesses
11:31are now coming forward
11:32and cooperating
11:33with investigators
11:34who are knocking loudly
11:36on the SSPX's doors.
11:37The society is scrambling,
11:40doing damage control,
11:41engaged in a charm offensive
11:42with supporters and donors,
11:44using whatever Catholic
11:45social media personalities
11:47they can dupe
11:47into carrying their water,
11:49all while hiding
11:50a crisis in its ranks.
11:55The SSPX survives
11:56by appealing to largely
11:57innocent,
11:58tradition-minded Catholics
11:59who have a love
12:00for the ancient rights
12:01of the Church,
12:02in contrast to the often
12:04outrageous scenes
12:05in more modern parishes.
12:07All these souls want
12:08is a safe spiritual
12:09and physical environment
12:10for their families,
12:11far from the horror
12:12of abusive liturgy
12:13and sex abuse
12:14and lying clergy.
12:16They hold their priests
12:17in the highest regard,
12:19a rank that too many
12:20of the clergy
12:21and their superiors
12:22have taken advantage of.
12:24Many SSPX followers,
12:25while perhaps viewing themselves
12:27as very different from,
12:28even superior
12:30to more modern-minded Catholics,
12:31do sadly share
12:33a very common bond.
12:35They are victims
12:36on many different levels.
12:40St. Mary's, Kansas
12:42is home to what will soon be
12:43the largest SSPX chapel
12:45in the world,
12:46as shown in this
12:47informational video
12:48published on YouTube
12:49by the SSPX,
12:51and is now the epicenter
12:52of the current abuse investigation,
12:54whose population
12:55is largely made up
12:56of SSPX parishioners
12:57who own local businesses
12:59and hold seats in government,
13:01including the police.
13:03The town was the subject
13:04of a profile
13:04in the Atlantic
13:05earlier this year,
13:06but there was one thing
13:08the article did not cover.
13:10There's a huge investigation
13:11going on right now
13:12for just Kansas incidents.
13:14I think as of right now,
13:16there's at least eight priests
13:17that are going to be investigated.
13:19Jassy Jakus
13:20was a longtime parishioner
13:21at St. Mary's
13:22and first met
13:23Father Pierre Duverger
13:24in 2013,
13:26a priest who hails
13:27from France
13:28and whose two brothers
13:29also serve as SSPX priests.
13:31In the confessional,
13:33Jassy started to cry
13:34when she mentioned
13:34she'd suffered sex abuse
13:36as a child.
13:37He interrupted her,
13:38pouncing on the chance
13:39to be her counselor.
13:40He really emphasized
13:42on the fact
13:43that he was my father
13:43and I was his daughter,
13:45and he also really emphasized
13:46on the fact
13:47that he had me promise
13:50that I was going to text him,
13:51call him, email
13:52at any time,
13:52any hour, for anything.
13:54A month later,
13:55they had their first
13:56face-to-face.
13:57And then he said,
13:58so are you a virgin?
14:00And I said, yes.
14:02And he said, are you sure?
14:04And I said, yes.
14:05And then he said,
14:06can you really be sure?
14:08And I said, Father,
14:09I don't know
14:10what you're asking me.
14:11And then he said,
14:12well, if he put his fingers
14:13inside of you,
14:14you're not a virgin.
14:15And so I kind of just
14:16kind of shut down
14:17at that point.
14:18And then he said,
14:18listen, this is what
14:19you need to do.
14:20I want you to send me
14:21an email with everything
14:23that you enjoy doing.
14:24And then I want you
14:26to send me an email
14:28in detail of all the
14:30sexual abuse
14:30that ever happened to you.
14:32I want you to include
14:33in detail any sexual
14:35temptations you have,
14:36any sexual thoughts you have,
14:37or actions you've committed.
14:39And I kind of looked at him
14:40and he said,
14:41this is because you don't
14:42understand what sin is
14:43and I'm going to help you
14:44to understand sin.
14:45Shortly after this
14:46troubling encounter,
14:47Duverger was reassigned,
14:49leaving St. Mary's.
14:50But a couple years later,
14:52speaking with a lay counselor,
14:53Jassy recounted her strange
14:55experience with the priest.
14:56And he said,
14:57stop right there.
14:58This story sounds familiar.
15:00I want the name
15:01of that priest.
15:01And I said,
15:02I don't feel comfortable
15:02giving that to you.
15:03And he said,
15:04you don't understand.
15:05I hear, you know,
15:06stories all the time.
15:07This one matches up.
15:09And I said,
15:11I'm not going to give it
15:12to you.
15:12I'm sorry.
15:12And then he said,
15:14okay,
15:16Jassy was then put in touch
15:18with another alleged victim,
15:19one whose story has been
15:20deemed credible
15:21by state authorities
15:23and which reportedly involved
15:24not only sexual grooming,
15:26but also sexual assault
15:28by Father Duverger.
15:33Jassy then went
15:34to Father Gerard Beck,
15:35currently assigned
15:36to an SSPX chapel in Idaho,
15:39who confirmed that Duverger
15:40had been reported
15:41for past misconduct.
15:42So I meet
15:43with Father Beck.
15:45We sit down.
15:46He grabs a pen
15:47and he starts writing
15:48what I say down.
15:51Did he seem surprised
15:52at all?
15:53No.
15:54He actually said,
15:55well,
15:56from what I know,
15:57Father Duverger
15:57is actually already
15:59under some restrictions
16:00due to a certain
16:01imprudence
16:02with a woman
16:03that is nothing near
16:04what you just told me,
16:06which now I know
16:06they use the word imprudence
16:08instead of sexual abuse
16:09all throughout.
16:10Another priest,
16:11Father Hervé de Latour,
16:13formerly assigned
16:14to St. Mary's,
16:15also told Jassy
16:16he came to know
16:16of yet another victim
16:18in 2007.
16:19He never reported
16:20Duverger to police
16:21and even counseled Jassy
16:23to stay quiet
16:24about her own experience.
16:26In an email dated
16:27November 30, 2019,
16:29he wrote,
16:29Since the events
16:30took place six years ago,
16:32maybe everything
16:33should be forgotten now.
16:35The pain can be offered
16:36to God.
16:37The name of the Father
16:38and the Son
16:39and the Holy Ghost.
16:40Jassy then went
16:41to the highest authority
16:42in the U.S.,
16:44Father Jürgen Wegner,
16:45District Superior,
16:46and questioned him
16:47about Duverger.
16:49And I said,
16:49well,
16:50did you do an investigation?
16:51And he said no.
16:53Even worse,
16:54Jassy learned Duverger
16:55was serving as principal
16:56at St. Thomas More Academy
16:58in Sanford, Florida,
16:59with unfettered access
17:01to boys and girls
17:03as well as female staff.
17:05Wegner assured Jassy
17:06that he was
17:07under strict supervision.
17:08She believed him
17:10until a few weeks later
17:11when she spotted
17:12a poster outside church
17:14featuring the priest.
17:15And I see a poster
17:16of Father Duverger
17:19running a pilgrimage,
17:20which is more than 50% women.
17:22With adults, women.
17:23Right.
17:23And they do confessions
17:24on pilgrimages,
17:25so I...
17:26Were you shocked?
17:27Yeah.
17:27I knew right then
17:28and there
17:28the restrictions
17:29were not as severe
17:30as Father Wegner
17:30had led me to believe.
17:32Upset by the discovery,
17:33Jassy contacted
17:35the Superior General,
17:36Father Davide Paglurani,
17:39the highest global authority
17:40in the SSPX,
17:42who punted,
17:43telling her through
17:44a secretary in an email
17:45dated January 16, 2020,
17:48that it is up
17:49to the District
17:50of the United States
17:51to give you an answer.
17:52Human nature is weak.
17:54In the meantime,
17:55Father Mark Vernois,
17:57pastor of St. Thomas More
17:58in Florida,
17:59assigned to supervise Duverger,
18:01warned Jassy over the phone
18:03not to go public
18:04with her story.
18:05He says,
18:06but listen to me.
18:07If you go public,
18:10you will be ruining
18:12so many people's lives.
18:13Your name will never
18:15be heard the same
18:15in any community
18:16you ever go into.
18:18You could be shutting
18:19down schools,
18:20losing souls.
18:20I said,
18:21whoa, whoa,
18:21it sounds to me
18:22like you're trying
18:23to blame me
18:23for your guys' choices.
18:25I'm not the one
18:26putting children
18:26at risk here.
18:27Fed up with being
18:28given the runaround,
18:29Jassy went public
18:30in a Facebook post
18:31on January 19th.
18:33How do people react
18:34to your Facebook post
18:35going public with all this?
18:36Honestly,
18:36about 95% of the people
18:38who reached out to me
18:38have been supportive.
18:40Listen,
18:40we know things like this
18:41have been going on.
18:43Good for you.
18:44Other victims also
18:46of SSXP's contacted you.
18:48Oh, yeah.
18:48Many victims.
18:48Are you allowed
18:49to say how many?
18:50I would guesstimate
18:51about 20 at least.
18:53In a last ditch effort,
18:55Jassy emailed
18:55Father Wegner
18:56and told him
18:57either he removed
18:58DuVergé's access
18:59to vulnerable girls
19:00or she's going public.
19:02He then tells her
19:03what she believes
19:04to be a lie.
19:05He emailed me
19:06and said he doesn't
19:07have the power
19:07to remove Father DuVergé.
19:10So then who has the power?
19:11Because you appealed
19:13to the Superior General
19:13and he said,
19:14well,
19:14the decision is
19:15Father Wegner.
19:16You know,
19:16Wegner's saying,
19:17I don't have the power.
19:18Yeah.
19:18The SSPX was thrown
19:19into a panic
19:20after Church Militant
19:22contacted them
19:23with a query
19:23about Father DuVergé
19:25and their eventual
19:26email response.
19:27They didn't realize
19:28until it was too late
19:29that they had accidentally
19:31included in the email thread
19:32a series of behind-the-scenes
19:35emails among leadership
19:37strategizing about
19:38how to respond
19:39to Church Militant.
19:41Their email reveals
19:42an organization devoted
19:43more to protecting
19:44the institution
19:45than of concern
19:47for victims.
19:47I would like to thank
19:48His Excellency Bishop Pellet.
19:50Most of the strategizing
19:51came from James Vogel,
19:53communications director
19:54for the U.S. district
19:55for the SSPX.
19:57He's editor-in-chief
19:58of Angeles Press,
19:59the official publisher
20:00for the society.
20:02In an email dated
20:02February 24, 2020,
20:04Vogel acknowledges
20:06to others in the thread,
20:07again, unaware that Church Militant
20:09would see the email,
20:11the ugly history
20:12of sex abuse
20:13in the SSPX.
20:14We cannot issue
20:15a blanket denunciation
20:16of the accusers
20:17and say he, DuVergé,
20:19is innocent of everything.
20:21Church Militant has already dug
20:23into some of our ugly cases
20:24in France.
20:25What if they find out
20:26the history here?
20:27He goes on to say,
20:29We can admit he's been placed
20:31under restrictions,
20:32but I still think
20:33most people will find it bizarre
20:34he is allowed to teach,
20:36run a school
20:37under the circumstances.
20:39After some back and forth
20:41with Father Wegner,
20:42Wegner writes,
20:44Here is it not about
20:45nullifying Church Militant.
20:46If we go down that road,
20:48they will judge us
20:49as Jassy does.
20:50For them,
20:51as for Jassy,
20:52the only proper outcome
20:54would be to have him
20:55in a religious prison.
20:57Making clear their concern
20:58is to stem further inquiry,
21:00he goes on to ask,
21:01But what is the right middle
21:03between saying
21:04pretty much nothing
21:05and soothing them?
21:06Vogel responds,
21:08It is an interesting strategy,
21:10but it is a kind of deflection,
21:11which might not be bad
21:13as an interim decision.
21:15Whatever we say or decide,
21:17they will respond.
21:18It will not end
21:19with Father Duverger.
21:21Jassy's claims and contacts
21:23will be a veritable
21:25gold mine for them.
21:27After all this
21:28behind-the-scenes strategizing,
21:30the SSPX chose the way
21:31of silence,
21:33issuing Church Militant
21:34a curt response,
21:35Father Wegner claiming
21:37he could not discuss the matter
21:38and instead referring us
21:39to SSPX attorneys.
21:41When Church Militant
21:43contacted the attorneys,
21:44they also refused to talk.
21:46So in the end,
21:47no questions answered,
21:49no transparency,
21:51total silence.
21:52But SSPX leadership
21:53had good reason
21:54to be concerned
21:55about the discovery
21:56of what they termed
21:57a veritable gold mine
21:59and it not ending
22:01with Father Duverger.
22:02It turns out
22:03the leadership
22:03has a deep history
22:05of covering for predators,
22:06failing to report crimes
22:08to civil authorities,
22:09attacking witnesses
22:10and trying to silence victims.
22:12A gold mine indeed.
22:17The SSPX was founded in 1970
22:19by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre,
22:21a Holy Ghost Father
22:22who desired to form clergy
22:24devoted to offering
22:25the traditional liturgy.
22:26In 1988,
22:28Lefebvre defied the Holy See
22:29by illicitly consecrating
22:31four bishops,
22:32leading to their
22:33automatic excommunication,
22:35which would only be lifted
22:36from the four bishops
22:37decades later
22:38by Pope Benedict in 2009.
22:41Lefebvre, however,
22:42died excommunicated
22:43and remained so.
22:45A letter from the pontiff
22:47that same year
22:47clarified that
22:48the society has
22:50no canonical status
22:51in the Church
22:52and its ministers
22:53do not legitimately exercise
22:55any ministry in the Church.
22:58A Vatican commission
22:59clarified that
22:59they're suspended
23:00a divinus,
23:02that is,
23:03prohibited by the Church
23:04from exercising their orders
23:05because of their
23:06illicit ordination,
23:07meaning they're not
23:09permitted to offer Mass,
23:10and each time they do
23:11is an act of disobedience.
23:14In spite of recent
23:15indults from Pope Francis
23:16granting the ability
23:17to hear confessions
23:18or conduct marriages
23:19purely for the good
23:20of the faithful,
23:21the status of the society
23:23has never been formally
23:24changed by the Holy See.
23:27The SSPX also rejected
23:28the Pope's offer
23:29to be granted
23:29a personal prelature,
23:31a form of governance
23:32that would have brought
23:33the society
23:33into full communion
23:35with the Church.
23:36Through the years,
23:37the cult of the SSPX
23:39has grown,
23:40now with 600 priests
23:41worldwide,
23:42three bishops,
23:44six seminaries,
23:45houses in 62 countries
23:46spread across six continents,
23:48with a flock of more
23:50than one million souls.
23:52The SSPX has often
23:53pitted itself against
23:54what it calls
23:55the Novus Ordo Church,
23:58meaning the new right
23:59of the Mass offered
24:00in the vast majority
24:01of parishes today.
24:03A number of its supporters
24:05touting that the society
24:06has been free
24:07of the stain of sex abuse
24:09that's wracked
24:10the rest of the Church.
24:11Some, however,
24:12have noticed the curious
24:13silence of the society's
24:15leaders on this score.
24:16And even when they did
24:17speak out,
24:18as they did
24:18in a 2018 article,
24:20supporters were puzzled
24:21by what appeared
24:22to be the society's
24:23downplaying of abuse.
24:24In a write-up published
24:26by SSPX-friendly publication
24:28The Remnant,
24:28titled SSPX Addresses
24:31Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report,
24:33they wondered
24:33why the society appeared
24:35to be brushing off abuse.
24:37Why, then,
24:38does the society report
24:39close with what appears
24:41to be an attempt
24:42to minimize
24:42the clerical abuse crisis
24:44in the Novus Ordo?
24:45The article going on to say,
24:47as someone who's attended
24:48SSPX chapels for many years,
24:51I'm trying to understand
24:52why the society
24:53is taking this course of action.
24:55A closer look at the SSPX
24:57makes clear why.
24:58Because the society
24:59has been at the exact same game
25:01for decades.
25:03But in this case,
25:04because of how the leadership
25:05presents itself,
25:06it strikes many
25:07as even more egregious.
25:09In fact,
25:10the very first American priest
25:12used to be ordained
25:13by Archbishop Lefebvre,
25:14Father Douglas Laudenschlager,
25:16in 1980,
25:17once a bright star
25:18in the SSPX constellation,
25:20had a trail
25:21of abuse allegations
25:23from before his ordination
25:24till years after.
25:26When Laudenschlager
25:27was a deacon
25:28in the 1970s,
25:29he taught
25:30at the SSPX seminary
25:31in Connecticut,
25:32but was sent packing
25:33after a seminarian
25:34accused him
25:35of sexually propositioning him.
25:37Douglas Laudenschlager
25:38is his name.
25:39And so he had a history
25:41and some of that history
25:43was also in the seminary
25:45because he taught
25:46in the seminary,
25:48St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary
25:50in Connecticut at the time.
25:51A seminarian confided
25:52to Father John Rizzo,
25:54who was a fellow student
25:55at the time,
25:55that Laudenschlager
25:56had approached him
25:57asking for sexual favors.
25:59He spoke to me about it
26:00and then he reported
26:02that incident to the rector
26:04and to the rector's credit,
26:08Douglas was removed
26:10from the seminary
26:11that night.
26:12It's thus remarkable
26:14that not only did
26:15Laudenschlager go on
26:16to be ordained
26:17in the SSPX,
26:18Lefebvre was so enamored
26:20of the young priest,
26:21he personally traveled
26:22to the U.S.
26:23to ordain him.
26:24That priest would go on,
26:25according to one witness,
26:27to abuse boys
26:28at the SSPX Academy
26:29in Idaho.
26:30I was a friend
26:31of one particular family
26:34whose son was victimized.
26:36So, yes,
26:37so they came to me
26:38one day
26:39with that particular
26:40issue at hand.
26:41I believe that the student
26:43did receive counseling
26:45at the time
26:46and I think they did
26:48address it
26:49to the Society
26:50St. Pius X
26:51and at that point
26:52I believe they said,
26:54well, he's no longer
26:55with us.
26:56Church militant
26:57tracked down
26:58Laudenschlager,
26:58who lives in Seattle
26:59with his longtime
27:00gay partner.
27:01Is this Douglas Laudenschlager?
27:03Yes, it is.
27:05Yes, I'm very sorry.
27:06My name is Christine Niles.
27:07I'm an investigative reporter.
27:09I was just doing
27:10a little bit of research
27:11on a priestly society
27:13and your name came up.
27:14I just want to confirm
27:15with you,
27:16were you once a priest
27:17of the SSPX?
27:19Oh, I'd prefer
27:20not to talk about that.
27:21Thank you, Christine.
27:26Sancte Johannes.
27:28His case raises
27:29a number of serious questions.
27:31How could a society
27:32so dedicated
27:33to the pre-Vatican II liturgy
27:35let a predatory homosexual
27:37slip through the cracks
27:38even while allegations
27:40were raised prior
27:41to his ordination?
27:42What exactly did the society
27:44see in him
27:45that it viewed
27:45as star material?
27:47How could the very founder
27:48of the society itself
27:49suspect nothing
27:50when he was so suspicious
27:52of everything else
27:53and travel to the U.S.
27:55personally to ordain him?
27:57Why did it not remove him
27:58immediately
27:58when it became clear
28:00who they were dealing with?
28:01And why did they not
28:02alert civil authorities
28:03about his abuse?
28:05He's never been called
28:06to account for his crimes,
28:08meaning there's been
28:08no justice for his victims
28:10because the SSPX
28:11never reported him to police.
28:14That refusal to report
28:15sexual predators
28:16to authorities
28:17is standard operating procedure
28:19for the SSPX.
28:21In St. Mary's, Kansas,
28:22for example,
28:23just this year,
28:24two SSPX parishioners,
28:26Dean Johnson
28:27and Peter Palmieri,
28:29have been jailed
28:30for serious sex crimes
28:31against children,
28:33the latter a father
28:34who raped his own children,
28:36while three SSPX priests
28:38who had certain knowledge
28:39of his deeds
28:40refused to report him
28:42to authorities.
28:43Palmieri was arrested
28:44and charged last year
28:45on multiple counts
28:46of rape and child sex assault.
28:48He's now in prison.
28:50He's father to a large family
28:52that are longtime parishioners
28:53of the local SSPX chapel
28:55and worked at St. Mary's Academy.
28:57According to one eyewitness,
28:59not one, not two,
29:01but three SSPX priests
29:03knew of his abuse
29:05and said nothing,
29:07even ordering him
29:08to stay quiet.
29:09He said not to turn
29:11Palmieri in
29:13and that if I was
29:14to speak about it,
29:15I would be committing
29:16immortal sin
29:17for running his good name.
29:19He said if you reported
29:20on Peter Palmieri,
29:21you'd be committing
29:22immortal sin.
29:23Correct.
29:24Correct.
29:25In 2012,
29:26Kyle White was engaged
29:28to one of Palmieri's daughters
29:29who'd been sexually abused
29:31by Palmieri
29:31from the time
29:32she was eight
29:32to age 15.
29:34Both Kyle and she
29:35were parishioners
29:36at St. Mary's.
29:37At age 19,
29:38she and Kyle
29:39went to SSPX priest,
29:40Fr. Todd Angeli,
29:43at the time assigned
29:44at St. Mary's
29:45to ask for his advice
29:47on how to handle this.
29:48So we went to go talk
29:49to Fr. Todd Angeli
29:51and I was hoping
29:52that he would advise her
29:54to turn her father in,
29:56Peter Palmieri,
29:58and he did not.
30:01Noteworthy,
30:01Angeli grew up
30:02going to St. Mary's Academy
30:04with Palmieri,
30:06the two longtime friends.
30:07Palmieri was an employee
30:09of the St. Mary's Academy
30:10there in St. Mary's
30:11at the time.
30:14And he stayed
30:14an employee
30:15for quite a few weeks
30:17after our first conversation
30:19with Fr. Angeli.
30:21A few weeks
30:21after you told Fr. Angeli
30:23about the abuse,
30:25Palmieri was allowed
30:26to continue working
30:27at the school.
30:28Correct, correct.
30:30I heard it was a priest
30:31down in Arizona,
30:32I believe it was,
30:33that called there
30:35in St. Mary's,
30:36letting him know that,
30:36hey, you need to get rid
30:37of this guy.
30:38So then it wasn't
30:39Fr. Angeli.
30:40Exactly, no,
30:41it was not Fr. Angeli,
30:42to my understanding.
30:43Kyle ignored Angeli's
30:45advice to stay quiet,
30:46leading to a surprise
30:47phone call a few weeks
30:48later from Fr. Hervé
30:50de la Tour,
30:51the same priest
30:52who had counseled
30:53Jassy Jacobs to stay
30:54quiet about Fr. Duverger.
30:56Fr. de la Tour
30:58told me to not speak
31:00about Peter Palmieri
31:03and run his good name.
31:05I would be committing
31:06the sin of detraction.
31:07Kyle then turned
31:08to Fr. Kenneth Novak.
31:10Make a mockery
31:11of a Catholic church.
31:12Who met him
31:13under cover of night
31:14in the choir loft
31:15of Assumption Chapel.
31:16Fr. Novak said
31:17that he was not supposed
31:18to be talking to me.
31:20He agreed that
31:21Peter Palmieri needed
31:22to be turned in
31:23because how pedophiles
31:25work, they don't stop.
31:27He was told
31:27not to speak with me.
31:29After all three,
31:30SSPX clergy refused
31:31to offer assistance.
31:32Kyle took his report
31:34to the SSPX-friendly
31:35police anyway,
31:36who failed to launch
31:37an investigation,
31:38claiming the matter
31:39was hearsay.
31:40It wouldn't be
31:41until six years later
31:42that the county sheriff
31:44revealed the police
31:45had bungled the case.
31:47Palmieri finally arrested
31:48and charged for his crimes.
31:50He's currently behind bars.
31:52Church Militant reached
31:53out to Fr. Angeli,
31:54who's now in Michigan,
31:56to ask why he counseled
31:57Kyle not to report
31:58Palmieri to police.
32:00Communications Director
32:01James Vogel answered,
32:03invoking the priest
32:03penitent privilege
32:04to prevent Angeli
32:06from responding.
32:07But the priest penitent privilege
32:08only applies to matters
32:10spoken in confession.
32:11Angeli's advice
32:12was not given in confession
32:14and therefore not protected
32:16by church law.
32:17We never heard
32:18from Fr. Angeli.
32:19Church Militant contacted
32:21Fr. Kenneth Novak,
32:22who also failed to respond.
32:25Novak is currently
32:26the subject
32:27of an assault charge
32:28lodged against him
32:29by a parishioner
32:29who claims the priest
32:31roughed up his son.
32:32And multiple individuals
32:34have spoken with
32:35Church Militant,
32:36accusing Fr. Novak
32:37of breaking up marriages
32:39and families,
32:40using his spiritual authority
32:42to seduce women
32:43away from their husbands
32:45and convince them
32:46to file for divorce
32:47and take their children
32:48to St. Mary's,
32:49where Fr. Novak
32:50freely visits them
32:51at all hours
32:52of the day and night.
32:54One anguished man
32:55fighting to save his marriage
32:56told Church Militant,
32:58Novak convinced his wife
32:59to leave him
33:00and take the children
33:01with her.
33:02Meanwhile,
33:02his children informed him
33:03the priest comes over
33:05to the house to visit,
33:06sometimes late at night,
33:07where he trashes the father
33:09in front of the children.
33:11A similar account
33:12was echoed
33:12by another man
33:13who spoke with Church Militant,
33:14also fighting
33:15to be reunited
33:16with his family.
33:17His wife,
33:18also reportedly seduced
33:20by Novak,
33:21taking the children away
33:22and convinced
33:22by the priest
33:23to file for divorce.
33:24And a distraught grandmother
33:27told Church Militant
33:28she'd been cut off
33:29from her grandchildren
33:30after they came
33:31under Novak's influence.
33:33All of them
33:34have asked
33:34to remain anonymous
33:35to protect their families,
33:36whom they continue
33:37to fight for.
33:39SSPF's leadership
33:40is aware of the complaints,
33:41but have largely
33:42done nothing,
33:43permitting Novak
33:44to freely minister
33:45at St. Mary's.
33:47And in Eugene, Oregon...
33:49Hello, I'm Fr. Lawrence Novak.
33:51Wait, I don't need introduction.
33:53Kenneth Novak's brother,
33:55Lawrence,
33:55another SSPF priest,
33:57went to bat
33:58for a convicted
33:59sexual predator,
34:00actually writing
34:02a character reference
34:03for him,
34:03a man who eventually
34:04did four years
34:05of hard time
34:06for sexually abusing
34:08two adolescent girls.
34:10In the May 10, 2007,
34:12letter,
34:12Lawrence Novak
34:13praised James Simmerman,
34:15a local millionaire
34:16and SSPF donor,
34:18as a very generous person,
34:20saying he is a gentleman,
34:23signing off by saying
34:24he has been very kind,
34:26generous,
34:27and useful to me.
34:28I consider myself
34:29honored to have known him.
34:31The abuse he committed
34:33was outlined
34:33in a 14-count indictment.
34:36It showed the abuse
34:37of the minor girls
34:38occurred at the SSPX-run
34:40St. Thomas Beckett Academy
34:42and occurred not just
34:44on school property,
34:45but also during school hours.
34:47Simmerman even placing
34:49a sleeping bag
34:50in a room next
34:51to the church bell tower
34:53where he would assault
34:54one of the girls.
34:55Simmerman had free reign
34:57at the school and church,
34:59unquestioned access,
35:00owing to a $700,000 donation
35:03and close association
35:04with various SSPX priests
35:06he would take
35:07on frequent trips
35:08to his vacation home
35:09in Alaska.
35:11Shockingly, though,
35:12when the abuse
35:13had been reported
35:13years earlier
35:14to the SSPX priest
35:15in charge of St. Thomas
35:17at the time,
35:18Father Daniel Cooper,
35:19he disregarded it
35:20and did not report it
35:22to police.
35:23When the case
35:24eventually went to trial
35:25in 2007,
35:26both SSPX clergy
35:27and the supporters
35:29rallied around
35:30the sexual predator
35:31while shaming the victims.
35:34Like Father Novak,
35:35SSPX priest
35:36Father Pablo Arzuaga
35:37also wrote a letter
35:38to the court
35:39vouching for Simmerman's character.
35:42Writing all the way
35:42from France,
35:44Arzuaga pleads
35:44with the court
35:45to show the sexual predator mercy,
35:47calling his
35:48multiple crimes
35:49of repeated sexual molestation
35:51a mistake.
35:52This is a man
35:53that has never done
35:54anything wrong before
35:55and possesses
35:56a good number of qualities.
35:58He made a terrible mistake.
36:01Prisoners also wrote
36:02to the court
36:02begging for clemency
36:03while attacking the victims
36:05as provoking the abuse.
36:07In a May 2, 2007,
36:09letter,
36:09Eric Bronger
36:10claims he saw the victim
36:11make herself available
36:13and provoke the situation.
36:15James, in my belief,
36:17was targeted
36:18by this young lady.
36:19Anne Simmerman's son,
36:21Michael Bryant,
36:22wrote in a May 29, 2007,
36:24letter about the victim,
36:25I have heard
36:26the victim's parents
36:27are severe
36:28in the judgment
36:29of my dad
36:30while never considering
36:31the aggressive behavior
36:32of their daughter.
36:34In addition
36:34to Simmerman's
36:35criminal conviction,
36:36he also settled
36:37a $3 million lawsuit
36:38with the victim's families.
36:40Fast forward nearly a decade
36:42and imagine parishioners
36:43shocked
36:44when they saw Simmerman
36:45sitting in the pews
36:46on a Sunday morning
36:47in 2016
36:48after being released
36:50from prison.
36:51One parishioner
36:51was so outraged
36:53he wrote an email
36:53on February 25, 2016
36:55to Bishop Follet
36:57in Menzingen, Switzerland,
36:58saying,
36:59on this last Sunday,
37:01February 21st,
37:02my family arrived
37:03at Mass to find
37:04a convicted child molester,
37:06James Simmerman,
37:07seated in church
37:08with his wife
37:09and his stepson's family.
37:11He was within arm's reach
37:12of several young girls.
37:14I was immediately filled
37:15with a range of emotions,
37:17disgust,
37:18horror,
37:19anger,
37:19shock.
37:20This is a man
37:21who violated
37:22and stole the innocence
37:23of young girls
37:24in our parish,
37:25at times
37:26in the church building itself,
37:27destroyed families
37:29and tore a rift
37:30in this parish.
37:31Going on to ask,
37:33what shepherd brings
37:34a sheep-killing wolf
37:35into his flock,
37:36especially with no warning
37:38or notification?
37:39And later in the letter,
37:41does the SSPX
37:42really want to be known
37:43as sympathetic
37:44to perverts
37:45of this nature?
37:47Couldn't this type
37:47of policy be seen
37:49as a magnet
37:49to other predators?
37:51Bishop Follet replied
37:52within eight hours
37:53in a brief note
37:54saying the matter
37:55was in the hands
37:55of the U.S. District Superior
37:57Nobody to protect you.
38:00Father Wegner.
38:01Wegner agreed
38:02to a public meeting
38:03with parishioners,
38:04which took place
38:05more than two weeks later.
38:07At the meeting,
38:08which Wegner flew in
38:09especially for,
38:10he blasted
38:11and shamed parishioners
38:12for what he called
38:13their lack of charity
38:15towards Zimmerman.
38:16Church militants
38:17spoke with eyewitnesses
38:18who had attended
38:18the meeting,
38:19some so disgusted
38:21they left the parish
38:22and quit the SSPX
38:24altogether.
38:25Zimmerman remains
38:26a registered sex offender
38:27in the state of Alaska
38:28and sources say
38:30he continues to donate
38:31to the SSPX.
38:32But this is only
38:33the tip of the iceberg.
38:35Father Philippe Peignot
38:37was found guilty
38:38several years ago
38:39by an SSPX tribunal
38:40of abusing
38:41an 11-year-old boy
38:42in France,
38:43making him sit
38:43on his lap
38:44as he fondled
38:45his genitals.
38:46According to a 2017
38:47expose in Swedish media,
38:49after the boy
38:50reported the abuse,
38:51the SSPX sat
38:52on the information
38:53for a year
38:54before then-superior
38:56general Father
38:56Franz Schmidberger
38:58transferred Peignot
38:59to a new congregation,
39:01never reporting
39:02him to police.
39:04Peignot would later
39:05be put in charge
39:05of a scout camp
39:06in spite of multiple
39:08victims known
39:09to the SSPX.
39:10In fact,
39:11there was none other
39:12than Bishop Bernard
39:13Fillet himself
39:14who lifted the ban
39:15on Peignot,
39:16allowing him once again
39:18to be around children.
39:19It was only after
39:20the boy,
39:21now a grown man,
39:22wrote to the Vatican's
39:23congregation
39:23for the doctrine
39:24of the faith
39:25that decisive action
39:26was taken,
39:27the Vatican asking
39:29a letter sent
39:29in 2013
39:30that the SSPX
39:32open a canonical trial
39:33against Peignot
39:34where he was found guilty.
39:39In 2016,
39:40a Swedish media crew
39:41found the priest
39:42in a chapel
39:43in the town of SBA
39:44near Bordeaux.
39:46He was surrounded
39:47by children.
39:47The priest's
39:48devoted following
39:49of SSPX supporters
39:50who were often times
39:52accused of cult-like
39:53worship of the society
39:54slashed the tires
39:56of the media crew's vehicle.
39:58Then,
39:59there's father
40:00Christophe Rouenel
40:01sentenced to 19 years
40:02in prison
40:03for rape and torture
40:04of three women
40:05who had been teachers
40:06at the SSPX school
40:07that Rouenel ran,
40:09Notre Dame de la Sabonnière
40:11in Goussainville
40:11near Paris.
40:13The victims accused him
40:14of sexually assaulting them
40:16during exorcisms.
40:18And an SSPX tribunal
40:20found Rouenel
40:21guilty of rape.
40:23Instead of reporting
40:24him to police,
40:25the rapist was hidden away
40:26in a Cabbageen monastery
40:27in Burgundy
40:28where he was ordered
40:29to do just two years
40:31of prayer and penance
40:32at which point
40:33he might be reconsidered
40:35for ministry.
40:36All of this was done,
40:37according to French media reports,
40:39with the knowledge
40:40and approval
40:41of Bishop Bernard Follet.
40:43It was at this monastery
40:45in 2014
40:46where police found Rouenel
40:47and arrested him.
40:49His sentence was increased
40:50from 17 to 19 years
40:52after a court found him
40:54guilty of torture
40:55in addition to rape,
40:56using scissors,
40:58knitting needles,
40:59and broomsticks
40:59to assault one of his victims.
41:01A man, the SSPX,
41:03with Follet's knowledge
41:05and consent
41:05would have turned loose.
41:07He's charged
41:08with abusing young boys
41:09in both Idaho
41:10and Washington
41:10over the last decade.
41:12And in 2016,
41:14Kevin Sloniker
41:15was given life
41:16behind bars
41:17after he pleaded guilty
41:18to abusing
41:19seven boys
41:20aged 8 to 14
41:21over the span
41:22of 10 years
41:24at the SSPX Academy
41:25in Post Falls, Idaho.
41:27Sloniker had been kicked
41:28out of the SSPX seminary
41:30in 2005
41:31after leadership
41:32found him
41:33mentally unstable
41:34for trying
41:35to circumcise himself.
41:37But that wasn't
41:38disturbing enough,
41:39apparently,
41:39for the SSPX
41:40to keep him away
41:41from children.
41:42The priests
41:43allowed him
41:44to actually stay on
41:45as youth camp counselor
41:46at Immaculate Conception Church
41:48where he'd take boys
41:49on trips across state lines
41:51and abuse them.
41:52One young victim
41:53even informed the SSPX
41:55he'd been stripped naked
41:56and whipped
41:57by Sloniker.
41:58But leadership,
41:59while claiming
42:00to have removed him
42:01in 2006,
42:02failed to restrict
42:03his access.
42:04A local police investigation
42:05showing Sloniker
42:06was able to contact
42:07children through
42:08the SSPX school
42:09as recently
42:10as 2013.
42:12He's currently serving
42:13a life sentence
42:14at Idaho
42:14Correctional Institution.
42:16In Bordeaux
42:17in southwest France,
42:19SSPX priest
42:20Fr. Uribe Silviano Bernabe
42:22was sentenced
42:23in criminal court
42:24for sexually assaulting
42:25a 13-year-old girl
42:26as well as an adult woman.
42:28Bernabe was ordained
42:29in 1989
42:30and was headmaster
42:32of a school in Bordeaux.
42:33He took his case
42:34to France's highest
42:35court of appeal
42:36which upheld
42:37his conviction.
42:38He's now behind bars
42:40for his crimes.
42:41And in Brussels, Belgium
42:43in 2017,
42:44in another case
42:45directly touching
42:47on Bishop Follet.
42:48Fr. Frederick Abbe
42:49was sentenced
42:50to five years
42:50in prison
42:51for homosexual abuse
42:53of boys
42:53in an SSPX boarding school.
42:55It was Follet personally
42:57who had assigned Abbe
42:58to live in a priory
42:59next door to the school
43:00under the supervision
43:02of then-Brussels
43:03District Superior
43:04Jorgen Wegner.
43:05In fact,
43:07a 2006 letter
43:08from Wegner rejoices
43:09over the fact
43:09that Abbe
43:10has joined his priory.
43:11The priest community
43:12has also grown
43:13as the fourth priest
43:14we've been waiting
43:15for a long time
43:16has joined us.
43:17It is father,
43:18Frederick Abbe.
43:19Our patience
43:20has been rewarded.
43:21It was during
43:22Wegner's time there
43:23that Abbe carried on
43:24his abuse of boys,
43:25his room next to a corridor
43:27giving him direct access
43:29to the boys' dorm
43:30where he would sneak
43:31to at night
43:32and force oral sex
43:33and other abuse
43:34on them.
43:35But note,
43:36this came after
43:37prior abuse allegations
43:38in his native Switzerland
43:40where he was accused
43:41of abusing a boy
43:42at the San Jose camp
43:43run by the SSPX
43:45in Valais.
43:46According to sources,
43:47the SSPX assured
43:48the victim's parents
43:49he'd never have access
43:51to children again,
43:52set up a tribunal
43:53to try the case
43:54and acquitted him
43:55of abuse
43:56based on lack
43:57of evidence.
43:58When new abuse
43:59allegations arose
44:00in Brussels,
44:01Bishop Follet
44:02again stepped in
44:03personally
44:04to intervene
44:04on Abbe's behalf,
44:06sending his private
44:07secretary,
44:08Father Raphael Grange,
44:09to accompany
44:10the accused priest
44:11to the courthouse daily.
44:13Grange was an attorney
44:14and dressed up
44:15in lay clothes
44:16to avoid being recognized.
44:18Father Stephen Abraham,
44:20ordained to the SSPX
44:21in the 1990s,
44:22was accused
44:23of homosexual abuse
44:25of a young man
44:25in the Philippines
44:26and again,
44:2810 years later,
44:29where he allegedly
44:30abused a 14-year-old boy.
44:32According to
44:33a priestly source,
44:34when the first allegation
44:35was made known
44:35to Bishop Follet,
44:37Follet again
44:38was slow to act.
44:40It wasn't until
44:41the abuse incident
44:42in France
44:42that Abraham was sent
44:43to live in seclusion
44:44in England,
44:45where he was still
44:46allowed to wear his cassock
44:47and present himself
44:48as a priest.
44:50But see,
44:51the way the people
44:51are fooled
44:52is people say,
44:52well, that was
44:53a Novus Ordo problem.
44:54Our priests
44:55say the Latin Mass,
44:56so that couldn't
44:57possibly be true.
44:59And they know
45:00they have the people
45:01in that mindset.
45:04The SSPX,
45:05led by Bishop
45:06Bernard Follet
45:07during so much
45:08of this cover-up,
45:09which also involved
45:10his predecessor
45:11as well as
45:11his successor,
45:13claims on its site
45:13that it is,
45:14quote,
45:14committed to protecting
45:15all minors
45:16and vulnerable adults.
45:18Its track record,
45:19however,
45:20presents a glaringly
45:21different story,
45:22indicating frightening
45:23and horrific abuse
45:25and cover-up
45:26reaching to the
45:27highest levels,
45:28all under the guise
45:29of piety
45:30and irreverent liturgy
45:31that continues to draw
45:32well-meaning Catholics
45:33yearning for tradition.
45:35There are,
45:36in fact,
45:36two threads of tradition
45:38in the SSPX,
45:39the liturgy,
45:40but also the dark world
45:42of sex abuse
45:43and cover-up.
45:44Despite its claims
45:45to be so different
45:46and superior
45:47to the rest
45:48of the Catholic Church,
45:49actually,
45:50it isn't that different
45:51at all.
45:52In some ways,
45:53in fact,
45:53because of its claim
45:54to superiority,
45:55it's able to get away
45:56with even more,
45:58given the near-fanatical
45:59support of so many
46:00of its adherents.
46:01There are many more
46:03criminal clergy
46:03than the ones
46:04we've covered,
46:05but law enforcement
46:06has asked us
46:07to not report on them yet
46:08so as not to compromise
46:09their criminal investigations.
46:11All throughout our research,
46:13Church Militant was faced
46:14with repeated stonewalling
46:15from SSPX leadership,
46:17either given outrageous reasons
46:19why they would not
46:20answer our questions
46:20or choosing to say
46:22nothing at all.
46:23Meanwhile,
46:24Church Militant has learned
46:25that Father Wegener,
46:27District Superior,
46:28the man in America
46:29behind so much
46:30of the cover-up
46:31is transferring
46:32to a post in Austria
46:33this fall,
46:34far from the reach
46:35of criminal prosecutors,
46:37all with the blessing
46:38and knowledge
46:39of SSPX leaders.
