00:00Solar-powered cold storage is helping African farmers cut losses, increase profit and access
00:06international markets. In Kenya, farmer Ivona Nyonyi Mumia grows herbs destined for European markets.
00:14She says keeping produce fresh from harvest to delivery was one of her biggest challenges.
00:21Before I started this, I walked back in terms of finding how best, how the best people have
00:27been doing it. And one of the main challenges was having cold storage so that you're having
00:31food straight from the farm, goes fresh by the time it's temperature controlled straight from
00:36when you're after the harvest and all the way till when it reaches the final consumer. You see,
00:43when you do that, you increase the shelf life and you know the product comes increased. Everyone makes
00:48a profit here. Across Africa, up to 40 percent of food is lost due to poor storage and transport
00:55infrastructure. According to SoCoFresh, integrating cold storage can dramatically reduce wastage.
01:02I find that where cold storage is integrated and used well, you move from having 40 to 50 percent of
01:08your produce getting lost to under 2 percent. And that's because it's very effective as a technology
01:15to be able to extend the shelf life of produce. The systems are powered by renewable energy and
01:22operate even in off-grid areas. But convincing users to adopt new technology remains a challenge.
01:29Renewable energy equipment is also new, so there needs to be a way in which you can be able to
01:34give confidence to the users that this works. It works all the time whether it's cloudy or it's sunny.
01:39So we do provide a lot of education. Solar powered cold storage is emerging as a practical
01:44solution to improve food security, reduce waste that helps farmers earn more from every harvest.
