Kenneth Lingard, the grandfather of footballer Jesse Lingard, has died while awaiting a retrial over alleged historic child sex offences. The court was told proceedings can no longer continue following his death.

00:12Crown Court previously cleared him of two counts of indecent assault, but could not reach verdicts
00:18on 15 other counts it can now be reported. Prosecutors told a hearing on Monday that
00:24he died on the 10th of June and produced a death certificate. The allegations were denied
00:29throughout the proceedings. Jesse Lingard gave evidence for the defence and told jurors he had
00:35no knowledge of any alleged abuse. Existing indictments now have no legal effect following
00:41confirmation of his death by the court.
