00:01Why shouldn't you kill her? She lied and cheated, endangered your family, she was
00:06threatening to destroy you, and last but not least, she stood in the way of your
00:10relationship with Martha. Jack, we are going to get through this. As long as we
00:14stick together and we don't let them rattle us, we'll be fine, okay? Martha
00:18Mackenzie, I'm arresting you on suspicion of murdering Samantha Holden. I'm here to
00:22tell you who really killed Sam Holden.
00:29Together, you and I forever and ever, no matter where you are, you're my guiding
00:42star. Hold me in your arms, don't let me go, I want to stay forever, close to
00:54home each day, home and away.
01:00Come on then, get it over with. Put me out of my suspense.
01:08Kylie Deeks. Kylie Deeks killed Sam Holden.
01:13Obviously I'm missing something. Kylie Deeks and Sam Holden are one and the same person.
01:17Yes, they are, but it's a lot more complicated than that. Sam Holden was a loving, caring
01:23wife and mother who created a new life for herself, far removed from the one she knew when
01:28she was Kylie Deeks. So when Johnny Cooper came to town, everything she worked for, the
01:34loving husband, the happy family, the white picket fence, was threatened. And that is when
01:39Kylie Deeks came back onto the scene. It was Kylie who killed Johnny Cooper. And it was
01:45Kylie who went down to the city to persuade her son to run away with her. And that's when
01:50she knew her life was at its lowest ebb, when she saw her own son was terrified of her.
01:54I hate to contradict your little theory, especially when you're on a roll, but I've already spoken
01:59to Rory. He said his mother never came anywhere near him.
02:02He lied. Oh, is that such a shock? I mean, the poor boy did what he's always done. He
02:07covered for his mother. And you've got proof of this? Yes. I took a young friend of mine
02:12to visit Rory where he admitted the truth. He said his mother had come down and asked him
02:16to run away with her. And he turned her down. That's hearsay. Oh, well, I'm sure the boy
02:20will swear to it. And that is why Sam decided to kill herself. It was the final rejection.
02:26What else did she have to live for? Oh, I'm sorry, Morag. There's way too much evidence
02:30for this to be anything but murder. And that's exactly the way she wanted you to think.
02:34I mean, this woman had a clever criminal mind. After Rory rejected her, she thought her life
02:40was over, but she wasn't going to go down without giving a fight. Her main fear was that
02:46Martha and Jack would get back together again, and she certainly didn't want that to happen.
02:50So she made sure that if she had to die, it would not be in vain. And she would make
02:55certain
02:56that Martha and Jack would spend the rest of their lives rotting in jail.
03:01I'm assuming you've got proof to back this up. Because without it, what you're telling me here
03:05is nothing but a fairy story.
03:08Oh, I know exactly what happened that night. Once she'd made up her mind, she came back here
03:13to put her plan into action, and I believe she broke into Roman's house to take hairs from Martha's brush.
03:20And while she was there, she grabbed a piece of Martha's notepaper so she could write a note
03:24to leave in the car. But on her way out, something unexpected happened. She ran into Martha, which took her
03:31by surprise.
03:32Not one to let an opportunity pass, she used it to gather vital DNA under her fingernails.
03:42In order for her plan to work, though, she had to convince people that she had everything to live for.
03:48And that is when she called Jazz Curtis to meet her at Stewart's Point.
03:51Jazz, I know what I'm doing. I just, once you give me that cash, I can go somewhere else. I
03:55can start a new life with Rory.
03:57Sam, if you run now, you're going to be running forever. What kind of a life is that?
04:01I don't have a choice, Jazz. Please, do this for me. If you can't do it for me, do it
04:06for Rory.
04:06If I go to jail, it's going to destroy him.
04:09Sam lied to Jazz. She said Rory was going to run away with her.
04:14In fact, everything she said was a lie, because all she wanted to do was convince people
04:19that she was in no state of mind to end it all.
04:22She then wrote the note on the stolen paper, making sure her handwriting looked different enough
04:26to have been faked, and I'm sure an expert will confirm that.
04:30She then took all the evidence and placed it in the car before she rang Rachel for help.
04:35She chose a place on the beach where she knew Rachel could find her.
04:38She made it look like there'd been a struggle.
04:40She even left her own blood in the sand to make it seem as if she'd been harmed.
04:45After she saw Rachel, she went back to the car to make sure everything was in place,
04:48and then she slipped into the night, and that is when I saw her.
04:53It was dark. I couldn't follow her, but I do know where she went.
05:02When she was far enough away, she prepared the shot of heroin.
05:06Just before she injected herself, she took the bung out of the boat.
05:14She was dead before it sank, and that's why she had no water in her lungs.
05:19She didn't drown.
05:21Everything had gone as she'd planned.
05:22She wanted it to look like murder, and it did look like murder.
05:27I'm curious.
05:28Why did you bother going to all the trouble of constructing this elaborate theory?
05:32Because I know my niece is innocent,
05:34and I will not see her go to jail for someone else's act of revenge.
05:38Sam had lost her husband, she was rejected by her son,
05:42and she had nothing else to live for.
05:44But it's just a theory.
05:46It was a theory, until I thought about it.
05:49And then I went looking.
05:51And I learned from a local fisherman that a dinghy had been stolen that night.
05:56And I knew I was right.
05:58I'm sorry, but I think there might be a couple of little points you're forgetting.
06:01The missing dinghy.
06:02Where is it?
06:03Unless it's found at the bottom of the bay, it proves nothing.
06:06I will find it.
06:08And there were bruises on Sam's arms,
06:10indicating she was forcibly held down at some point before she died.
06:13Now, she didn't struggle with herself, so how do you explain that?
06:15If she managed to engineer everything else,
06:18I'm sure there's an explanation for the bruises as well.
06:20Well, so now I'm meant to drop everything
06:22and start a new investigation that could potentially make me the laughing stock
06:25at the entire police force.
06:28Is that it?
06:29Is there anything else I'm missing?
06:31Yeah.
06:32What about the part when you become an even bigger laughing stock
06:35when you charge two innocent people?
06:37Morag, I understand why you're so passionate about this,
06:40and you know how much I admire your tenacity,
06:43but honestly, can't you see?
06:44Martha Mackenzie and Jack Holden had the motive, the means,
06:47and the opportunity to kill Sam,
06:49and I already have forensic evidence to support that.
06:52And that will be in my brief to the DPP.
07:07Do you really want to end your career like this?
07:10It's such a long and distinguished record.
07:13Instead of leaving on a high,
07:15you will be known as the detective who got it all wrong.
07:17You're only as good as your last job, Ross,
07:19and everyone will think you've been forced into retirement.
07:21Morag, I would love you to be right about this,
07:23but you've got to look at it from my point of view.
07:25Oh, yeah, the superiors are laying down the law,
07:27and you are under pressure to make arrests, right?
07:29Murders of policemen's wives, they make everyone nervous.
07:32Since when did you let politicians in the top brass dictate to you?
07:35I'm not immune to pressure.
07:4048 hours.
07:41Just two days, Ross, please.
07:4524 hours.
07:47That's the best I can do.
07:48Not a minute more.
07:50At this time tomorrow night,
07:51you're not back here with hard evidence on the boat
07:52and the bruises, then I'm sorry,
07:54I'm going to have to charge Holden and Mackenzie.
07:56But in the meantime, you will let Martha go without charge.
08:01Ross, I know you're going out on a limb for me,
08:04but I will find you the evidence, I promise.
08:06And if you don't?
08:08Martha and Jack are innocent,
08:09and I will prove it to you.
08:12I hope you can, Morag.
08:14For your sake and for theirs,
08:16I truly hope you can.
08:26Hey!
08:28I heard you were back from the hospital.
08:30Are you okay?
08:32Yeah, go on.
08:34Listen, I hope you don't mind,
08:35but Jack's going to be staying with us for a while.
08:36Yeah, of course.
08:37I just can't stand being in the house at the moment.
08:39Hey, hey.
08:40You can stay as long as you need to, okay?
08:42Probably don't even need to worry about permanent accommodation.
08:45I reckon the police doing everything they can
08:46to sort that one out from me.
08:47Jack.
08:49Morag's working her tail off,
08:50and she's doing everything she can to prove you're not guilty.
08:53I'm not sure that's going to be enough.
08:55I just can't believe Sam went to all that trouble
08:57to set you guys up like that.
08:59Yeah, and that's my point.
09:00The cops don't believe that anyone would go to those lengths.
09:02No, I didn't mean it like that.
09:03I guess I just, I don't know,
09:06probably just angry at myself for being drawn into her act,
09:09that whole routine she did about having so much to live for.
09:12Yeah, well, she sucked us all in, Jess.
09:14Even me.
09:17Listen, Jack.
09:18I'm not expecting you to be doing a happy dance right now, okay?
09:20But try to have a little fun.
09:21Dad, this time tomorrow night, I could be going to jail.
09:24And I'm sorry if that's been too negative for you,
09:27but it's just the way things are.
09:29I've spoken to a couple of guys I used to know in Timor,
09:31and they were part of a clearance diving team,
09:33so they're going to be here in the morning.
09:34Oh, well, we need to start at first light.
09:36Yeah, don't worry, they know that.
09:37But in the meantime, I'm going to need charts of the bay
09:39and also the place where Sam's body was found.
09:41I've spoken to Alfred, he's organised all of that.
09:43Do you really think there's any hope?
09:44It's a small boat, it could have been dragged out to sea by now.
09:46Well, I'm banking on the fact that she couldn't have rode out too far.
09:49She was in no fit condition, and that is in our favour, isn't it?
09:52Yeah, and once I get the charts and I know where Sam's body was found,
09:55well, then I can narrow down the area of search.
09:57Don't worry, I know it seems like a long shot,
09:59but it's not beyond the realms of possibility.
10:01And remember, it's not just me.
10:02There's three other guys and they're very experienced divers.
10:04Thank you for doing this.
10:06Well, the bat's only half the equation,
10:07and we will still have to find out how or why
10:09Sam got the bruises on her arms.
10:11I'll talk to Jack, maybe he's got some ideas.
10:13Yeah, I'll come with you.
10:16Hey, sorry, I don't mean to bail on you, Jack,
10:18and I have things to talk about.
10:19No, don't worry, you're both facing murder charges.
10:22I'd be surprised if you didn't.
10:23Hey, you've got way more to think about
10:25than a boyfriend with ego problems.
10:26Um, Martha, we really do have to go.
10:33So, I guess you're gonna need a couple of days off.
10:36Yeah, sorry to leave you in the lurch.
10:37You're gonna be able to manage?
10:39Oh, hey.
10:40If I thought it'd help, I'd lend your hand myself.
10:44Do you really think Sam killed herself?
10:46Well, if Jack and Martha didn't do it,
10:48then I see any other logical explanation.
10:50But to prove that, I'm gonna have to find that dinghy.
10:52And fast.
10:59What, aren't we going in?
11:01Um, look, Martha, I know this is none of my business,
11:05but when does that stop me in the past?
11:06I sense a lecture coming on.
11:08Um, no, I just want to make sure that you realise
11:10how lucky you are.
11:12I mean, you've got a wonderful man in Roman,
11:14and he's doing everything he can to keep you out of jail.
11:17Yeah, I know.
11:18Um, good.
11:19Because we all know the history of you and Jack.
11:21And at a time like this...
11:22At a time like this, all we care about is proving our innocence
11:24and keeping our backsides out of jail.
11:26That's it.
11:27End of story.
11:28Okay?
11:29So you don't have to get all protective over Roman.
11:31He's not going to get hurt.
11:32I am not worried about Roman.
11:34I am worried about you.
11:36Don't you think it's time you had a bit of happiness in your life?
11:39Yeah, I agree.
11:40So you know what?
11:41Let's get on with proving that I didn't kill Sam Holden,
11:44then I'll be over the moon, I promise.
11:49Look, I'm sorry, I just don't think I can make it that early.
11:52I've got a million and one other things to do.
11:57Alright then, yeah.
11:58I'll give it my best shot.
12:00Okay, thanks.
12:02Great.
12:03I have to pick the tablecloths up by 10,
12:06otherwise there's not going to be anyone in the office, apparently.
12:09Sorry, I was supposed to do that.
12:11Yeah, well, you've got to do what you've got to do.
12:15Well, it is Martha's entire future we're talking about here.
12:18Darl, I don't want her to go to jail either.
12:20And why do I get the feeling you're not saying what you really want to say?
12:24I just think that Morag's theory, well, quite frankly, I think it's a little bit dodgy.
12:31There's no argument here.
12:32It's pretty far-fetched.
12:33But consider the alternative.
12:34Do you really think Jack and Martha are capable of murder?
12:37And if the answer is no, then we've got to ask ourselves what really did happen.
12:41And then Morag's theory doesn't seem so ridiculous, does it?
12:44Yeah, well, maybe not.
12:46But when love and passion go wrong, anything's possible.
12:51I mean, look at sweet little Sam.
12:54Who'd have thought for a single minute that she was capable of killing Johnny Cooper?
12:59No one.
13:00And that's my point.
13:01Given the right set of circumstances, anyone is capable of anything at any time.
13:08Everyone in this town knows how strong the connection between Jack and Martha is.
13:12Yes, they used to be married.
13:14There's a history there, but that's the operative word, isn't it? History.
13:18Jack was in trouble and he needed Martha's help.
13:20She would do anything to help him and vice versa.
13:23That's just completely stupid, Irene.
13:26Everybody in the world likes to think they'd help out a mate in trouble.
13:28But that doesn't mean they'd commit murder for them, does it?
13:34Is there any way she could have hurt herself during the day?
13:37I mean, did anything happen to cause those bruises on her arm?
13:39How would I know?
13:40Oh, Jack, I need you to concentrate.
13:42I mean, this is a piece of the puzzle we have to unlock.
13:44What's the point?
13:45They're coming for us tomorrow night.
13:47They're gonna throw us in jail and there's nothing we can do about it.
13:50We still have 24 hours.
13:52If we can find the evidence to support Aunty Morag's theory, this whole nightmare will be over for both of
13:57us.
13:57So, back to the bruises.
13:59Can you think of any way that she could have got them?
14:05Well, maybe she paid someone.
14:07I beg your pardon?
14:08Well, she's done it before when she was a prime suspect in Donny's murder case.
14:12She got someone to beat her up to throw the police off a trail.
14:15And it worked.
14:16Well, maybe she's pulled the same trick again.
14:19Well, if she got some low-life to beat her up, maybe they supplied the drugs as well.
14:23That makes sense.
14:25Odds are it's the same guy.
14:27Well, where would you find someone like that?
14:29You show me a seedy pub and I'll find you a guy that's happy to do it.
14:32For the right price.
14:34Perfect.
14:35That's your project then.
14:37Roman's going to search the ocean for the boat.
14:40You are going to find us a thug for hire.
14:56Solved the case already, have you?
14:58It's only been a few hours.
14:59That would be a miracle even for me.
15:01Come on, don't sell yourself short.
15:04Look, I ran out of here in a rush this afternoon before I could say thank you.
15:08I do appreciate the extra time.
15:10And I do know what pressure you're under.
15:12So I know it couldn't have been easy for you to give it to me.
15:15You know, I probably wouldn't have done it for anyone else but you.
15:18No matter how nicely they asked.
15:20Although, let's face it, that's not a word I'm ever going to use to describe the way you operate.
15:24No, never was, was it?
15:25Exactly.
15:28Well, I can see you're busy, so I'll just...
15:30I got the feeling if I didn't give you the extra time, you'd probably never speak to me again.
15:34Oh, well in that case, you know me far too well.
15:36And if you weren't going to talk to me, then I'd probably have to can the whole idea of asking
15:40you out to dinner after I retire.
15:42I mean, if we're both going to sit there in stony silence, there's not a whole lot of point.
15:46You don't have to look so horrified.
15:48Oh, no.
15:51Well, you took me by surprise, that's all.
15:53This is a nice town and good fishing too, so I hear.
15:56So I thought I might drop down every now and then and in that case, it would be nice to
16:01catch up.
16:03Ross, as soon as I've proved my niece is innocent and as soon as you leave your career on a
16:08high, I think that would be a delightful idea.
16:12It would be the perfect opportunity for me to gloat about being right.
16:28So in all the pubs in all the world, how are you possibly going to find the one you're looking
16:32for?
16:33Well, I remember the day that Sam got herself beaten up.
16:36She said she was visiting her sister.
16:39From memory, she was gone about four hours, so that gives me a radius to work with.
16:43Are there really that many places where you can find people to bash someone for?
16:46Well, they're not exactly the nice little cocktail bars that you're probably used to.
16:49Oh, I've been to a dive or two in my time.
16:53I don't know why I'm sounding so proud about that, I don't know.
16:58There's no way you're going to be able to get through all these places by yourself tomorrow.
17:01I've got some guys from work, they're going to give me a hand.
17:04Well, Tony and I could help.
17:07What? You don't think I can look after myself?
17:09I don't think the Crimms would know what the hell they've got themselves up against Jazz.
17:15So that's a yes?
17:17Well, maybe I could send you to some of the places that aren't quite so seedy.
17:21Less seedy. I'll take that as a compliment.
17:25Look, I'm going to go to bed. You should try and get some sleep yourself.
17:30Yeah, I don't think there's much chance of that.
17:32Well, give it a go. You're going to need to be on the ball tomorrow.
17:47Hey.
17:48Hey.
17:49I've been waiting all night to do this.
17:51Oh, you should have come to the diner. I could have made it happen sooner.
17:53I know, but I don't want to see other people.
17:56It can be paranoid, but I feel like everyone's talking about what's going on.
17:59You were released without being charged. You've got nothing to be ashamed of.
18:03Yeah, I know. Everyone in Summer Bay is going to know that I was arrested.
18:06I just don't think I can face people pointing at me and whispering.
18:10All that will happen soon enough if I am charged.
18:13You won't be. I'm not going to let that happen.
18:16If only the decision was yours.
18:19Thank you. Thank you so much for helping me and Jack.
18:23I know it must have been a bit weird.
18:25I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it.
18:28So maybe I should just come right out and ask.
18:30Then we can forget about it.
18:32Is there anything I need to be worried about?
18:35There is nothing you need to be worried about.
18:37I want to be with you.
18:39There is absolutely no way I'd stand a chance of getting through this terrible time without your support.
18:45Okay.
18:46That's all I need to know.
18:48Are you coming to bed?
18:49Yeah, I'll be in in a minute.
18:50I just want to chill out on my own for a while.
18:53Okay.
18:55Not too long, okay?
19:08Hey guys, I'm going to turn in.
19:13You're not going to sit up all night doing that, are you Matt?
19:15No, of course not.
19:17Alright, good night.
19:18Alright, please.
19:26Hey, I thought we agreed you were going to go to bed.
19:28Yeah, I will in a minute.
19:29Mm-hmm.
19:30Well, make sure you do.
19:32Mm-hmm.
19:56Hi.
19:57Hey.
19:58What are you doing?
20:00Praying to God that there will be a miracle that keeps us from going to bed.
20:04I'm scared, Jack.
20:05I know.
20:07Me too.
20:08Tell me it's going to be alright.
20:09Tell me we're going to get through this.
20:11We have to get through this, Martha.
20:14I'm not going to let Sam do this to us.
20:17I'm not going to let her hurt us any more than she already has.
20:20We just need to stay strong.
20:22Focus on the end goal.
20:23And keep repeating what we've always said.
20:26That we didn't do it.
20:27We didn't kill Sam.

20:31I should go.
20:33They're probably going to check the records.

20:40Yeah.
20:41I need to hear yours as well.
20:53And 24 hours to prove they're not murderers.
20:56It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
20:58So there's no time for betrayal.
