00:03if you had to guess what this image you're looking at is what would it be a close-up of
00:07some fabric maybe some animals brain what if i told you these were actually close-up images of
00:12mars earth's neighbor these photos were captured recently by nasa and they show the red planet's
00:18equatorial region it's completely covered in these ridges and canyons in an area where northern
00:23plains come together with southern plateaus experts say they don't really know how or why
00:27these form on mars but in other places like earth similar structures have a lot to do with ice the
00:32taller ridge-like areas stand upwards of 13 to 16 feet tall with scientists believing they could
00:37have been carved by ice flows much in the same way glaciers carve mountains and canyons here on earth
00:42though other explanations include underground ice which causes areas to collapse as it turns from a
00:47solid directly into a gas in a process called sublimation but it could also just be that when
00:52the ground freezes on mars it lifts heavy sedimentary rock then thawing out in the sun and sorting those
00:57rocks as they lay back down again it's a similar process which can be seen in these photos which
01:01were captured here on earth in the canadian high arctic
