00:03was there ever life living on mars that's the question nasa rovers have been trying to decipher
00:08for years but now according to a new study there may be a simple explanation as to why we have
00:12yet
00:12to find any evidence of such a thing our instruments just aren't good enough the recent
00:17study sought to determine whether or not the instrumentation that our rovers currently have
00:20equipped on mars can even detect life in a place we already know it exists on earth researchers
00:25went out to chile's atacama desert to the ancient redstone delta the area is quite similar to the
00:30landscape of mars making it the perfect spot for the experiment and after gathering aged samples and
00:36looking at their genetic sequences they discovered something odd nine percent of the genetic material
00:40couldn't be classified at all meanwhile a further 40 percent was simply classified as some form of
00:45genetic material meaning it's incredibly hard for those instruments to determine materials that
00:50haven't already been classified and on an alien planet we likely have no idea what life would look
00:54like at all the researchers are now calling this class of unidentified genetics the dark microbiome
01:00with the researchers concluding in their study quote similarly low levels of organics will be hard
01:05if not impossible to detect in martian rocks depending on the instruments and technique used
