00:14what's going on guys thanks for tuning in again this is another one of Hany's Beer Reviews and
00:19today obviously we have the dual review they were doing both of the beers from the Dos Equis
00:25brand the Dos Equis Amber and the Dos Equis Lager Especial or special lager this is for the guys out
00:34there who requested it to do some Mexican beers I reviewed the Modelo Especial a while back I reviewed the
00:39Tecate a while back and now we're doing Dos Equis both of them many of you guys are familiar with
00:47these brews Dos Equis Amber is available on tap at a lot of Mexican restaurants and Dos Equis Lager Especial
00:54is being really
00:55heavily promoted they have the ad campaign with the most interesting man in the world and I love those commercials
01:00that got a trip and I love the writing on those commercials but Dos Equis has been around for a
01:08long time Dos Equis is brewed in Mexico it's brewed by a company or a brewery called CervecerĂa Cuauhtemoc Montezuma
01:17if I remember correctly
01:18yeah CervecerĂa Cuauhtemoc Montezuma they brew Corona, Dos Equis, Tecate, Sol, Catalanca, Bohemia and maybe one or two more I
01:28forget so they're a big badass Mexican brewery which was not too long ago bought out by Heineken so the
01:34parent company of this brewery is Heineken so they do have some money and some cloud behind them in the
01:42beer world that's why they've been heavily advertised lately you know most interesting man in the world
01:47and all that but Dos Equis for those of you guys who don't know literally translates into two X's the
01:54history of this beer is really cool because Dos Equis was originally brewed by a by a German born Mexican
02:02he was German but he was born in Mexico and he brewed this beer in 1897 to commemorate the coming
02:10of the 20th century that's why it's two X's originally the beer was called Siglo 20 20th century
02:16and of course it was with the 20th century was with the two X's you know Roman numerals which is
02:22why now it's just Dos Equis but you know I always thought that was really cool it's a beer that's
02:28been around in Mexico for a very long time it's been imported to this country now for quite some time
02:33a lot of people know it and you know I'm just doing this review because I wanted to kind of
02:38do the dual review on these but I have had plenty of both of these Dos Equis Amber is my
02:43fallback at a Mexican restaurant because they almost
02:46always have this and it's a beer that I like on tap and Dos Equis like it I don't really
02:51drink it anymore but in the old days before craft beer when I used to drink a lot of Becks
02:56and Heineken I really like this beer because my buddies and I used to call this the Mexican Heineken considering
03:03that it's owned by Heineken now makes it so much more funny
03:07but anyways that's that punching up beer advocate like we always do
03:15we start with the Dos Equis special lager as it says on here out of 469 reviews it's got a
03:22C overall it's categorized as an American adjunct lager at 5% on call by volume
03:28and I remember guys in adjunct lager you know adjunct lagers are kind of a style that was started by
03:34the Americans you know the Budweiser people because they started throwing in extra ingredients usually rice or corn into the
03:41mix into the beer to cut costs and to cut flavor personally I think that there should be no adjuncts
03:48in beer but unfortunately it's a style that you know the Americans have gotten used to
03:53to be in North America South America or Central America so anyways so the La Vida Especial is an adjunct
04:01lager 5% alcohol by volume the amber out of 664 reviews receives a C plus and it's categorized as
04:10a Vienna lager at 4.5 alcohol by volume that's why it is amber it's still a lager but it's
04:17a darker richer lager coincidentally
04:20the other two most popular Vienna lagers are the Samuel Adams Boston lager and the Brooklyn lager both are brewed
04:28in the same style so enough of that coincidentally since it is the same style of beer as a Boston
04:34lager I broke out the Sam Adams glass for this guy and since this is brewed in that crappy American
04:40tradition of adding an adjunct in there I broke out the Budweiser Hurricane Wings glass and we're just going to
04:46do these side by side
04:48so starting with the amber pop it open
04:58and yeah you know I'm doing this for fun I've been drinking these beers on and off for years and
05:03I know they're very popular so I figured I'd bring you guys to do a review just to kind of
05:07let everybody out there know what's going on with these beers
05:12again they're decent options and it's just fitting if you're at a Mexican restaurant and you know I go to
05:19a lot of Mexican restaurants because Hoggy loves him some Mexican food beautiful part about that is Mrs. Hoggy also
05:26loves her some Mexican food so we do a lot of that
05:31if you're ever in the South Florida area and you want to know a good Mexican restaurant let me know
05:36I will steer you in the right direction
05:39but anyways there we go and I love doing the side by side because you can really see the difference
05:44in color
05:44of these two beers let's see if we can kind of do this here
05:50let's see okay there we go yeah you see that there we go
05:54this one is clear this looks like a Budweiser it's like a light straw color you know kind of like
06:00a light clear pea color really shitload of carbonation
06:03and it's crystal clear I can see the camera right through it you know a lot of carbonation the head
06:09is really pop fizzy
06:12and then this guy a lot less carbonation it is clear I can see the camera through it but it's
06:19still that rich ruby amber color
06:22you know what I mean so that's a lot nicer looking and the head on this beer is definitely not
06:28pop fizzy
06:30right there you can tell the difference it stops from one to the other
06:35so let's dig into my old school Mexican Heineken first
06:40hmm
06:44yeah you do catch there is a sweetness from the malt
06:46little hint of sweetness in there so that's good
06:50not much in the weight of hops there is a little slight note of something earthy
06:56but there's also like a vegetable kind of a corn and that's your adjunct in there they throw corn in
07:01there to cut costs and cut flavor and make it lighter and clearer and all that
07:06and you can really smell it
07:09I'm gonna probably be throwing some corn on the grill later so
07:13yeah not the most pleasant thing but again
07:16the smell is nothing spectacular but let's have a taste
07:28thin light watery you know like a budweiser like a bush
07:35carbonation fizz kind of gets you up front
07:37you swallow it real simple you know because it's real thin and watery
07:40and the finish you get some of that funky little corn flavor there
07:54I'm not impressed of course I've never impressed with a beer that has corn rice or any other unnecessary crap
08:00in it
08:00but all things considered for the stuff for an adjunct lager there's more offensive ones out there
08:06there really are
08:09um I wouldn't rate that very high though because there's nothing really appealing about it
08:13if it's ice cold and I've been working in the yard or you know I've been working out or whatever
08:18the case is and I'm sweaty and tired and thirsty
08:20ice cold I'll kill it it'll be great but when I'm sitting down trying to enjoy a meal and enjoy
08:25my beer with it
08:26or if I'm just having a beer to have a beer this is not the beer I want
08:32now this guy
08:35mmm definite difference in the smell
08:39definitely get more sweetness
08:41that's the toasted malts
08:44so that's how you get a darker beer usually you toast where you roast the malt which makes them darker
08:49more richer
08:50brings out the flavor a lot more
08:52and you get that toasty sweet character to it
08:56and again there's not much else going on there's not a very strong smell coming off this beer but there's
09:01no corn there's nothing offensive
09:04it's very simple
09:06so again let's dig into this one
09:16it's not as thick or as rich as the color that's on
09:19it's still pretty thin easy to drink
09:23but it's just a very simple sweetness across the middle
09:26and just the lightest bit of like an earthy bitterness at the finish to kind of clean it up
09:32you know and bringing that crispness and bitterness as you swallow to kind of cleanse it on the way down
09:39not as refreshing to be completely honest like I said if I was just hot and sweaty and tired and
09:44I wanted to just chug a really cold beer
09:46I might go for this guy but if I'm going to wash down my food or if I'm going to
09:50enjoy a beer or two before dinner arrives at the table
09:54this is a much better option there's a lot more flavor going on here
09:58while that's the flavor on this one really sucks but it's carbonated and it's crisp and it's more refreshing
10:03so there you go
10:05and I really hate to think that the most interesting man in the world drinks this crappy beer
10:09because this is pretty decent all things considered
10:13there's better examples of this style
10:15there's better beers out there
10:16but this is halfway decent
10:17this is an adjunct locker it sucks
10:21it really does
10:21I don't want to taste corn
10:23I want to taste good things
10:24so it sucks that the most interesting man in the world promotes this beer
10:28it's a shame because I really love those commercials
10:30but it is what it is
10:31out of the two Dos Equis beers
10:33I prefer the Amber
10:34I think the Amber is a better quality brew
10:38as far as the effort put into it and the quality of the ingredients
10:42this is a winner
10:43this is to satisfy the Americans and their horrible taste for piss water corny beers
10:50let's keep it real
10:51and just a side note on the most interesting man in the world
10:54like I said I love those commercials
10:56I almost took a picture with the life's house cut out of the guy at a liquor store one time
11:01but I ended up not doing it
11:02but the funny thing is I find this really amusing
11:05the most interesting man in the world
11:07he's advertising a Mexican beer
11:09whose parent who is owned by a Dutch company
11:13advertising a beer to the American market
11:15and the actor portraying the character is Jewish
11:18I love that
11:20I love that
11:21yes the most interesting man in the world
11:22he's a Jewish actor
11:23he's not Mexican
11:24he's not Hispanic at all
11:25thought I'd throw that out there
11:27I love the stuff
11:30but I digress
11:31Dos Hequis
