00:00:02I'm handcuffed to the wall in this torture chamber.
00:00:09There's no windows.
00:00:12It feels eerily silent.
00:00:16This is like a horror film.
00:00:19Am I going to die chained to this wall?
00:00:24There's nowhere to run.
00:00:26There's nowhere to hide.
00:00:30I'm just stuck.
00:00:33I did not picture myself surviving.
00:00:37I want other women, whether they've been stalked or not believed, to see my story and think things can change.
00:00:58I was 20, 21.
00:01:01It was my last year of school.
00:01:03I was working a job.
00:01:06I had an internship.
00:01:08I was so busy.
00:01:10I felt like I had no time.
00:01:12I show up at my job on campus and work my shift, and I hear the door open.
00:01:19And I look, and Christopher's there with flowers in his hands.
00:01:25I just freeze, and my eyes get big, and on the inside, I'm flaming mad, is the angriest I've been,
00:01:33because I thought we were past all of this.
00:01:37He said, you know, I'm really sorry I heard a grandpa passed away.
00:01:41I say, like, I told you, Christopher, I don't want to see you.
00:01:45I don't want to talk to you.
00:01:46I don't want the flowers.
00:01:47Like, just leave me alone.
00:01:51I think he was surprised that I wasn't flattered.
00:01:58I'm, like, waiting outside in the cold at this bus stop, and he approaches me again, and he's like, I
00:02:06just don't understand, and I cut him off, and I said, I don't know what there is to not understand
00:02:14about this situation.
00:02:16And he's like, well, I just feel like there needs to be some closure.
00:02:20I want to figure this out with you, Christopher.
00:02:23I've told you multiple times by text I've blocked you.
00:02:27I don't want to see you.
00:02:29I don't want to talk to you.
00:02:30Don't talk to me.
00:02:31Don't text me.
00:02:32Don't show up where I am.
00:02:33Leave me alone.
00:02:36He thought that was his chance.
00:02:38You know, he's a little Romeo.
00:02:39Not at all.
00:02:40He was creepy.
00:02:42It's the first real experience where I feel like somebody knows what my wishes are very clearly and doesn't care.
00:02:55Christopher, to me, he was, like, a sad, lonely guy.
00:03:01I wouldn't say my first impression was very memorable.
00:03:04I mean, he was certainly older by six, eight years, maybe.
00:03:11He seemed very socially awkward.
00:03:14She was a little bit nice to him, and he took that and he spun it into something it wasn't
00:03:18and ran away with it.
00:03:41One day I caught him at frisbee practice, like, sitting in the stands by himself watching us.
00:03:49And it was a women's frisbee team.
00:03:53And then every week at practice, I would see him either up walking on the track or sitting in the
00:04:00stands.
00:04:02But he never approached me, never talked to me.
00:04:07But at that point, I was like, I just want to graduate.
00:04:10I just want to get through and do the things I'm going to do next.
00:04:20I felt like it was just something I could deal with on my own.
00:04:30Sam initially seems hesitant to accept the situation for what it is.
00:04:37It seems like she's in danger, and it's frustrating to watch her downplay that.
00:04:44This isn't a normal situation.
00:04:46This isn't a coincidence.
00:04:47Like, this is a hazard.
00:04:56I'm very excited to graduate.
00:04:59My mom and my grandma were there, so that was special.
00:05:06I wanted to take a little time off before I did graduate school.
00:05:11So I returned back to Elk Rapids in northern Michigan.
00:05:17The Christopher chapter is behind me.
00:05:22Kind of nice to just catch up with Pat and Robin and some of our other friends.
00:05:28I met Samantha on the soccer team.
00:05:32She was a senior when I was a freshman in high school.
00:05:36It doesn't matter your age or your lifestyle.
00:05:41Sam will give everybody a chance.
00:05:47We lived in this apartment right downtown, across from the local pub, above the Chinese restaurant.
00:05:54Our door was always unlocked, and it was fun.
00:05:58It was cute.
00:06:05Christopher messaged me a few times, like, you know, wanting to come up to Elk Rapids or meet with me.
00:06:11And when I show Carissa, you know, we just kind of laugh and just kind of brush the messages off.
00:06:18He became a running joke, just being this guy who doesn't get it and, you know, get a life.
00:06:24There wasn't room for a villain.
00:06:25It didn't fit in the plot of this story I had written about our situation in paradise.
00:06:37I wanted to take a year or so off and kind of explore my faith a bit more.
00:06:42There was a ministry internship that really caught my eye, and I applied and was accepted.
00:06:48I was located in Kansas City.
00:06:50I was very excited.
00:06:56I've known Sam about 25 years.
00:06:59My youngest daughter is her same age, so they were in school together.
00:07:04You know, Sam doesn't have an active dad in her life.
00:07:06And so I did a lot of the dad stuff, you know, provided rides, tried to be as supportive as
00:07:12I could.
00:07:14Two days before I left to go to Kansas City, Craig and I are running errands together.
00:07:25We had noticed there was a red motorcycle following us.
00:07:35My heart just sank.
00:07:36I knew it was him.
00:07:40How did he find us?
00:07:41Like, I'm not even in my own car.
00:07:44How did he know where we were?
00:07:49So I pull into the high school parking lot.
00:07:51He gets off his motorcycle.
00:07:52I'm going to go confront him.
00:07:54Sam says, nope, I'll do it.
00:07:56I get out of the car, and I say, Christopher, what are you doing here?
00:08:00Like, why are you in my town?
00:08:02He's like, well, I applied for the same internship you did, and I was accepted.
00:08:08Do you think you could give me a ride out there?
00:08:14I am just stunned and deflated.
00:08:20Like, the thing I had been looking so forward to for so long feels like it's ruined.
00:08:25And I tell Craig what Christopher says.
00:08:31Craig says, this is a problem.
00:08:34I'm a solver.
00:08:34So it's like, all right, we're going to stop this.
00:08:39Sam's over at our house.
00:08:40We're sitting down at the table, talking about what happened during the day.
00:08:45Craig's son comes home and says, Sam, there was somebody looking for you.
00:08:50And I said, who was it?
00:08:53And he's like, well, I didn't recognize him.
00:08:55Was he, like, bald and short and redheaded?
00:09:00Sam shows my son, Josh, a picture of Christopher, and Josh realizes he's seen him coming out of Sam's apartment.
00:09:07And that's really when it starts to get even more serious.
00:09:11I realized the gravity of how terrifying that was, that he was literally coming out of our apartment.
00:09:19I felt, like, actually scared and threatened, that he would drive two hours and find where I lived.
00:09:32This man is not just, like, obsessed with you.
00:09:37He's dangerous.
00:09:45Craig says, I think we need to consider a restraining order or a personal protection order, a PPO.
00:09:54I was like, oh my gosh, like, a PPO, a restraining order?
00:09:58Like, Christopher?
00:10:00Like, it just felt so surreal.
00:10:04So we urge her, sit down right now and write down all the things he's done and all the places
00:10:10he's showed up.
00:10:12It's now not just a school issue.
00:10:14It's an all-year-round issue.
00:10:20I thought through the past two or three years and wrote down the list of interactions with Christopher.
00:10:31I met Christopher in 2011.
00:10:36He had joined the same Christian group.
00:10:41I want to be welcoming and kind, so I saw him at different events the group was doing.
00:10:47He friended me on Facebook one day.
00:10:52At first, I think he's just lonely for some reason, finds me an approachable person to talk to.
00:11:02And then, at some point, it kind of changes.
00:11:06He's asking me out on a date if I'm free between classes, have some time for lunch.
00:11:12And so I'm just kind of saying no and letting him down easy and thinking he must get the message.
00:11:17But he doesn't get it.
00:11:37Before my birthday, he approaches me.
00:11:40He says, hey, I know your birthday is coming up.
00:11:43I was wondering, would you want to go see a Red Wings game?
00:11:45I got us tickets.
00:11:50I am just kind of speechless in a bad way.
00:11:53I tell him I'm not interested in going to a Red Wings game with you.
00:12:00It's not like there's anything wrong with you, Christopher.
00:12:02I just don't have any romantic interest in you.
00:12:12He puts a few red roses under my windshield wiper, more flowers, like at my doorstep, with a weird love
00:12:20note.
00:12:21I said, I think you need to kind of back off and to leave me alone.
00:12:27But he won't stop.
00:12:31He was following me to my work, following me in my internship there at Frisbee practice.
00:12:42It was the first time I had really laid out each interaction with him in such a way that once
00:12:50they're put all together, I'm like, this guy's stalking me.
00:13:03I received Samantha's petition requesting a personal protection order against Christopher.
00:13:11I have 24 hours in which to review it and decide whether it should be granted or deny it.
00:13:23I've never seen a stalking case as severe as this.
00:13:28He was obsessed.
00:13:30If you looked up stalker in a dictionary, there'd be a picture of Christopher.
00:13:36So I granted the personal protection order for six years.
00:13:40At the time, this was the longest personal protection order I'd ever issued.
00:13:46I get a hold of the director of the prayer ministry in Kansas City and explain to him,
00:13:51hey, there's a restraining order on Christopher.
00:13:54Can you take care of it?
00:13:56He calls him and says, we're revoking this.
00:13:59You can't come out here.
00:14:01It was a relief.
00:14:03It was over.
00:14:04And I could just pack my car and drive off into the sunset.
00:14:13After the PPO is granted, life goes back to normal and it's like he never existed.
00:14:23I went to graduate school and I trained as a private practice therapist.
00:14:29I had friends that were, like, interested in what I was doing.
00:14:34So I write this blog and there's a woman named Sarah Mott that comments.
00:14:40And she just said, well, I just stumbled across your blog.
00:14:45And I was like, oh, this is kind of cool.
00:15:02I moved back to Michigan because I really missed, I missed home.
00:15:08A lot had changed.
00:15:10My mom and my grandma passed away.
00:15:18It was really tough for me.
00:15:21I think it shook a lot of kind of my identity.
00:15:29I buy a house and I dug into painting and house projects.
00:15:38I joined this, like, adult recreational soccer league.
00:15:44This league is a true social gathering.
00:15:48Sam's good.
00:15:49She's a skilled player.
00:15:51She's very confident with the ball and knows what she's doing.
00:15:58I'm arriving to one of my soccer games and I see Christopher.
00:16:11I just stopped dead in my tracks.
00:16:15It looks like he's lost a lot of weight.
00:16:17Like, what is he even doing here?
00:16:20I was kind of shaken up the whole game just seeing him again.
00:16:24He didn't acknowledge me or speak to me.
00:16:29Like, what, am I in danger?
00:16:36I went back through my files and found the PPO and saw it had expired.
00:16:42There's something wrong with this guy.
00:16:43This guy's not here to play soccer.
00:16:45He's here to watch Sam.
00:16:48And when did he start doing that?
00:16:49He started as soon as his restraining order lapsed.
00:16:57I do worry that he maybe is coming after me in a vengeful way,
00:17:03wanting to hurt me for denying him all those years ago.
00:17:10When Sam first met Christopher,
00:17:14he was this kind of just soft,
00:17:18chubby,
00:17:19seemingly harmless,
00:17:21awkward guy.
00:17:23It seemed to me
00:17:25when I saw him ten years later,
00:17:27he had been training
00:17:29for something.
00:17:30That's how it felt.
00:17:47Christopher didn't scream soccer player.
00:17:49He was kind of awkward with his body,
00:17:51didn't really know how to play,
00:17:53didn't know how to move his legs and feet correctly.
00:17:59I approached this league's organizers
00:18:03and tell them about my fear
00:18:05that Christopher is following me again.
00:18:08And the league organizer says,
00:18:12I'm sorry,
00:18:13like I spoke with an attorney
00:18:14and there's nothing I can do
00:18:15to really kick him out.
00:18:18Technically,
00:18:18Christopher's not doing anything wrong.
00:18:23Then one day I am grocery shopping
00:18:27and I see him.
00:18:33I remember her telling me
00:18:35that she would go to the gym
00:18:36and she would see him there.
00:18:42He was everywhere.
00:19:11I'm playing soccer one day
00:19:13and he's playing against me
00:19:15and somebody passes the ball.
00:19:20He's faster than me
00:19:22and he beats me to the ball.
00:19:25Christopher was overly aggressive with Sam,
00:19:28just running into her,
00:19:30almost to like just put a body on her
00:19:33instead of go for the ball.
00:19:36It was not normal behavior.
00:19:40He turns around and looks at me
00:19:43and sticks out his tongue.
00:19:44He's like,
00:19:48and I just am infuriated.
00:19:55Like I felt like no matter where I played,
00:19:58he was just always in my area
00:20:01and I just kind of broke down.
00:20:03Like I subbed out of the game.
00:20:08I feared that I would never be free of him.
00:20:19Carissa comes into Elk Rapids
00:20:21and she stays at the same apartment
00:20:23we used to live in in college.
00:20:30We go up on the roof,
00:20:32we're drinking wine,
00:20:33we're chatting.
00:20:34Neither of us told each other,
00:20:35but we were both scanning the premises.
00:20:40And I happened to glance over
00:20:43next to this alleyway
00:20:44next to my apartment
00:20:45and I see,
00:20:47guess who?
00:20:48Christopher looked around
00:20:50when he was walking down the street a lot,
00:20:52like he was looking for me.
00:20:54And at that point in me,
00:20:56like a switch flipped
00:20:58and I got up,
00:21:01I ran downstairs
00:21:02and I just scream.
00:21:05I've never screamed.
00:21:06I said,
00:21:06Christopher,
00:21:07what are you doing?
00:21:09What are you doing in Elk Rapids?
00:21:12He said,
00:21:13well,
00:21:13I can't go home
00:21:15because I'm drunk.
00:21:16I'm like,
00:21:17you're not even drunk.
00:21:18Why are you following Sam?
00:21:22And he said,
00:21:24I haven't talked to Sam.
00:21:26I haven't said a word to Sam
00:21:27in eight years.
00:21:31I said,
00:21:31then why are you following her?
00:21:34And he said,
00:21:34I'm not following you.
00:21:36I said,
00:21:37well,
00:21:37you're everywhere
00:21:38and it's weird.
00:21:39So stop.
00:21:40And if I see you again,
00:21:41I'm going to call the police.
00:21:43I was terrified.
00:21:45I called my family.
00:21:47I called all of Sam's friends.
00:21:49I said,
00:21:50I'm really concerned about this.
00:21:55The more Sam sees Chris out in public,
00:21:57the more she gets concerned.
00:22:02She is a little more on edge.
00:22:06She's more irritable.
00:22:10People were concerned for Sam at this point.
00:22:13You have to get on the PPO.
00:22:15We will all write reports.
00:22:16There's no way
00:22:17that they can deny this evidence.
00:22:20It's frustrating for me.
00:22:21I had the gut feeling
00:22:22that I did not have enough evidence.
00:22:26We all thought
00:22:27that Christopher was a psychopath.
00:22:32Robin had suggested,
00:22:34you know,
00:22:35do you have any protection in your home?
00:22:38Like,
00:22:38do you have a firearm?
00:22:41Like,
00:22:41what's to prevent him
00:22:42from potentially trying to break in your home?
00:22:46And I said,
00:22:47well,
00:22:48like,
00:22:48all my windows and doors are locked.
00:22:50My friend had gotten me a ring camera.
00:22:54I kept,
00:22:56like,
00:22:56a really sharp hatchet.
00:22:58Like,
00:22:59it was,
00:22:59like,
00:22:59sharp to the touch like a knife
00:23:01right under my mattress.
00:23:03I felt better having a weapon.
00:23:05It's an easy access thing
00:23:08if something goes bump in the night.
00:23:20Pat
00:23:21and a friend
00:23:22had come up
00:23:23to stay with me
00:23:24and hang out
00:23:25for the long holiday weekend.
00:23:29We went to a bar.
00:23:31The first conversation we had
00:23:33was with Sam
00:23:35telling us how
00:23:36Chris followed her
00:23:37the other night
00:23:38and Carissa,
00:23:40classic Carissa,
00:23:41she goes off on this guy.
00:23:4330 seconds later,
00:23:45who walks in?
00:23:46Chris walks in.
00:23:50We all sink our heads.
00:23:52Holy hell,
00:23:53this guy's,
00:23:54this guy's tracking her.
00:23:58I see Christopher
00:23:59sitting by himself
00:24:01with his phone out
00:24:02directly behind me.
00:24:05There's just no way
00:24:07how is he here also
00:24:08and I'm scared.
00:24:10And I say,
00:24:12hey,
00:24:12can we leave?
00:24:14I gotta make this stop.
00:24:17As soon as I got next to him,
00:24:19you could almost like
00:24:20see him tense up.
00:24:22I remember saying his name.
00:24:24I said,
00:24:24Chris,
00:24:25I know you're following Sam.
00:24:27I know what you're doing.
00:24:28I know you're stalking her.
00:24:32Once we got back from the bar,
00:24:33we knew who he was tracking her.
00:24:36That was the first time
00:24:37we really
00:24:39kind of brainstormed,
00:24:40like how could Christopher
00:24:41possibly
00:24:43keep showing up
00:24:44at the same places?
00:24:46Like,
00:24:47is he driving by her house?
00:24:53I cleaned out
00:24:54the inside of my car.
00:24:56I looked around
00:24:57by my windshield
00:24:59and like my hatch.
00:25:02Like,
00:25:02I'm not,
00:25:03I'm not a mechanic.
00:25:04I don't know.
00:25:05What does a tracker
00:25:06even look like?
00:25:08We kept digging
00:25:09until our
00:25:10flashlights
00:25:11died
00:25:12and
00:25:12until our shirts
00:25:13were dirty.
00:25:16Unfortunately,
00:25:17I didn't find it.
00:25:21I decided
00:25:22I needed to
00:25:23try to get a PPO
00:25:25and I needed to
00:25:26try to get proof
00:25:28because I
00:25:28didn't think
00:25:29I had enough evidence
00:25:30to really
00:25:31get another
00:25:32restraining order.
00:25:34She
00:25:35felt confident
00:25:36that she
00:25:37didn't have enough evidence
00:25:38for a PPO
00:25:39when we felt
00:25:40certain that she did.
00:25:42We were all
00:25:43scared
00:25:44and feeling
00:25:44very urgent
00:25:45like,
00:25:46Sam,
00:25:46we need you
00:25:47to do this.
00:25:48Something has to be done.
00:25:49This guy's a weirdo.
00:25:52I got in touch
00:25:53with Devin
00:25:53who is an assistant
00:25:55prosecutor
00:25:55and said,
00:25:57can you help me
00:25:58with a PPO?
00:25:59Christopher
00:26:00had smartened up.
00:26:02He never tried
00:26:03to even talk
00:26:04to me
00:26:04or get in touch
00:26:05with me.
00:26:06So I feel like
00:26:07it's going to be
00:26:07tough to prove.
00:26:10And she's like,
00:26:11I don't know,
00:26:12I think we should try.
00:26:18I would be scared
00:26:19if I was Sam.
00:26:20I didn't want
00:26:21to freak her out,
00:26:22but I wanted her
00:26:24to start
00:26:25taking steps
00:26:26to protect herself.
00:26:28I filled out
00:26:29the paperwork.
00:26:30I actually met
00:26:31Devin
00:26:32at the courthouse
00:26:34and formally
00:26:36filed it.
00:26:38We also
00:26:39attached
00:26:40her previous
00:26:41personal protection order.
00:26:43I wanted
00:26:44it to be shown
00:26:46that there was
00:26:46a six-year
00:26:47personal protection order,
00:26:48which to me
00:26:49is unheard of
00:26:50for a first time.
00:26:51When I was
00:26:53at the office,
00:26:54I specifically
00:26:56asked the clerk,
00:26:56I said,
00:26:57if Christopher
00:26:59were to come
00:26:59in and inquire
00:27:00if there was
00:27:01any petitions
00:27:02filed against him,
00:27:03would you be able
00:27:04to answer that?
00:27:06And she said,
00:27:07no,
00:27:07that information
00:27:08is confidential.
00:27:13I felt hopeful.
00:27:16There's an assistant
00:27:17prosecutor
00:27:18helping me file this.
00:27:20Like,
00:27:20she must think
00:27:22I've got enough.
00:27:22What's the harm
00:27:23in granting it?
00:27:29On Friday,
00:27:31I checked the mailbox
00:27:32and I opened
00:27:35the letter
00:27:35and it says
00:27:37the petition was denied.
00:27:43Because it appeared
00:27:45myself and Christopher
00:27:47had a complicated
00:27:49relationship.
00:27:53I was very upset.
00:27:55I remember just
00:27:57cranking music
00:27:58in my car
00:27:58and driving out
00:27:59to where I was
00:28:00meeting my friend.
00:28:04I felt so defeated.
00:28:06It felt like
00:28:07a slap in the face.
00:28:12And then,
00:28:13what does he do?
00:28:14He goes to Menards,
00:28:15he starts building
00:28:16in his bunker.
00:28:23That's when
00:28:23he took action.
00:28:26I was shocked
00:28:27and worried for Sam
00:28:29when the PPO was denied.
00:28:30What you're essentially
00:28:31telling her
00:28:32is you don't believe her.
00:28:36The people
00:28:37that were supposed
00:28:37to protect her
00:28:38have failed her.
00:28:40if Sam
00:28:42is going to get
00:28:43stalked
00:28:43and not get
00:28:44protected,
00:28:46then who will?
00:28:49I think it's
00:28:50definitely
00:28:51a comment
00:28:52on society
00:28:53about
00:28:53how hard women
00:28:55have to fight
00:28:55to be believed,
00:28:57how easy
00:28:59it is
00:29:00to just look
00:29:01the other way.
00:29:05he knew
00:29:06where she lived.
00:29:10I don't know
00:29:11what his intent is.
00:29:12If he wants
00:29:13to hurt me,
00:29:14it's just
00:29:15this ticking
00:29:16time bomb
00:29:17that I couldn't
00:29:18do anything about.
00:29:40This really becomes
00:29:42kind of a fight
00:29:43for my life.
00:30:03It was a Friday
00:30:04morning.
00:30:06I heard
00:30:07a noise.
00:30:08I heard
00:30:08like the squeak
00:30:09of a floorboard.
00:30:11It sounded like
00:30:12it was just
00:30:12outside my bedroom
00:30:13door.
00:30:16I could see
00:30:18some sort
00:30:19of shadow
00:30:19that wasn't
00:30:20normally there.
00:30:23And my heart
00:30:24starts racing.
00:30:27My mind
00:30:28shoots to
00:30:29the hatchet
00:30:30I kept
00:30:31under my mattress.
00:30:33In that second,
00:30:35someone storms
00:30:36into my room
00:30:37and jumps
00:30:38on me
00:30:39while I'm in bed.
00:30:41And I begin
00:30:41screaming,
00:30:42hoping that
00:30:43someone would
00:30:43hear me.
00:30:45And I feel
00:30:47his hands
00:30:48around my throat.
00:30:49and he
00:30:50begins to choke
00:30:52me.
00:30:54And it gets
00:30:55tougher to breathe.
00:30:57And I just think
00:30:58he's going to kill me.
00:31:02I recognize
00:31:03immediately
00:31:06that it's Christopher.
00:31:10He picks me up.
00:31:13We approach my car.
00:31:14he puts me
00:31:16in the back seat.
00:31:18I'm being kidnapped
00:31:19in my own vehicle.
00:31:21Once we leave
00:31:22my house,
00:31:23the likelihood
00:31:24of me surviving
00:31:25this experience
00:31:26goes down
00:31:27drastically.
00:31:29This really becomes
00:31:32kind of a fight
00:31:33for my life.
00:31:39He stops the car
00:31:41and asks me
00:31:42to lean forward
00:31:43and he ties
00:31:44a bandana
00:31:44around my eyes
00:31:45so I can't
00:31:45see anymore.
00:31:47But I know
00:31:47the neighborhood
00:31:48and I begin
00:31:50counting the turns.
00:32:06So I see
00:32:07like a garage
00:32:07door.
00:32:22Christopher gets out
00:32:23of the car
00:32:24and he picks
00:32:24me up again
00:32:25and we kind
00:32:27of take a couple
00:32:29steps and then
00:32:29we crouch
00:32:32and I can smell
00:32:33lumber.
00:32:37Then I can hear
00:32:38that I'm like
00:32:39in a more
00:32:40enclosed space
00:32:41and then we go
00:32:42through another
00:32:43threshold
00:32:44and then
00:32:46he sets me down
00:32:47on this soft surface
00:32:48and takes off
00:32:49my bandana.
00:32:54I look around
00:32:55and I'm in
00:32:55this tiny
00:32:58seven by seven
00:32:59little room.
00:33:03I see like
00:33:04these soundproof
00:33:05patches on the
00:33:06wall.
00:33:09So no one's
00:33:11going to hear
00:33:11me scream
00:33:14and I glance
00:33:15over and I see
00:33:16metal rings
00:33:17on the walls
00:33:18and I just
00:33:20think
00:33:20oh my god.
00:33:22This is like
00:33:24a horror film.
00:33:29and I say
00:33:31you want to
00:33:32talk?
00:33:32Let's talk.
00:33:34He says
00:33:35well I didn't
00:33:37just bring you
00:33:38here to talk
00:33:40for the day.
00:33:41You're actually
00:33:42going to be here
00:33:42for two weeks.
00:33:44He says I've
00:33:45taken vacation
00:33:46and we're
00:33:48going to spend
00:33:48some time
00:33:48together.
00:33:51And I
00:33:52try to hold
00:33:53back tears
00:33:56and I say
00:33:59okay what are
00:34:00we going
00:34:00to do for
00:34:01two weeks
00:34:02Christopher?
00:34:04He says
00:34:05well I have
00:34:05a deck
00:34:05of cards.
00:34:08And I say
00:34:09well people
00:34:09are going to
00:34:10know I'm
00:34:10missing.
00:34:12And he says
00:34:13well I think
00:34:13I'll keep
00:34:14them occupied.
00:34:16I've planned
00:34:17to take
00:34:18your paddleboard
00:34:19and leave
00:34:20it out
00:34:21at Lake
00:34:21Michigan
00:34:22and let
00:34:23people think
00:34:24maybe you
00:34:25drowned
00:34:26and that
00:34:26will keep
00:34:27them busy.
00:34:35I maybe
00:34:35have the
00:34:36day
00:34:36before people
00:34:37start to
00:34:39raise eyebrows
00:34:39about where
00:34:40I am.
00:34:41Is he
00:34:41going to panic?
00:34:42Are things
00:34:43going to get
00:34:43tense?
00:34:44Is he
00:34:44going to
00:34:44kill me?
00:34:45I say
00:34:46to him
00:34:46let's talk.
00:34:47I'm a social
00:34:48worker.
00:34:48I can talk.
00:34:51He asks
00:34:52me specific
00:34:53things like
00:34:54who was I
00:34:54with when
00:34:55we went
00:34:55camping
00:34:57on this
00:34:57date?
00:35:04What was
00:35:05I doing
00:35:06in Glen Lake
00:35:06two Thursdays
00:35:08ago?
00:35:11I answer
00:35:12him truthfully
00:35:15I think
00:35:16he's testing
00:35:16me because
00:35:17he already
00:35:18seems to
00:35:19know the
00:35:19answer.
00:35:21He reveals
00:35:22with some
00:35:22pride that
00:35:23he has a
00:35:24tracker on
00:35:24my car.
00:35:27He showed
00:35:28me the
00:35:28app on his
00:35:29phone that
00:35:29he used
00:35:30and you
00:35:30know anytime
00:35:31you leave
00:35:32your little
00:35:33neighborhood
00:35:33it alerts
00:35:34me and I
00:35:35see where
00:35:35you're going.
00:35:38and he
00:35:40revealed he
00:35:40also had
00:35:42trackers on
00:35:43my roommate's
00:35:44car and
00:35:45my friend's
00:35:45car.
00:35:48I asked
00:35:49him how
00:35:50long he'd
00:35:50been doing
00:35:50that and he
00:35:51said maybe
00:35:52a year.
00:35:56Christopher is
00:35:57a psychopath.
00:35:59he is
00:36:01someone that
00:36:02I can't
00:36:03use normal
00:36:03logic with.
00:36:06I decide
00:36:07to ask
00:36:07him more
00:36:08about this
00:36:09space that
00:36:10he has
00:36:10me in.
00:36:11Did you
00:36:12build this?
00:36:13And he
00:36:14says yes.
00:36:14He built
00:36:15it himself
00:36:15and he
00:36:16kind of
00:36:16takes pride
00:36:17in building
00:36:19this structure.
00:36:21He tells
00:36:22me I
00:36:23kind of
00:36:24got this
00:36:24idea for
00:36:25this bunker
00:36:26from watching
00:36:27that show
00:36:27the TV
00:36:28show You.
00:36:33The show
00:36:35You is
00:36:36about a
00:36:37good looking
00:36:38young man
00:36:38who becomes
00:36:40obsessed with
00:36:41a woman
00:36:42and he
00:36:43essentially
00:36:43kidnaps
00:36:45her and
00:36:46keeps her
00:36:47in this
00:36:48glass room
00:36:49which Christopher
00:36:50says wasn't
00:36:51logistically
00:36:51possible.
00:36:53He had
00:36:53looked into
00:36:54it.
00:36:54This main
00:36:55character
00:36:56is this
00:36:57psychopath.
00:36:58He ends
00:36:59up murdering
00:37:00the woman
00:37:00and you've
00:37:01related to
00:37:01this person.
00:37:03I need
00:37:04to try
00:37:05to convince
00:37:06him that
00:37:07we can
00:37:07be friends.
00:37:17That afternoon
00:37:18he pulled
00:37:21a piece of
00:37:21clothing out
00:37:23out of
00:37:23this tub
00:37:24and he
00:37:25says
00:37:26there's
00:37:26something
00:37:26I've
00:37:27really
00:37:27wanted
00:37:27to
00:37:27give
00:37:28you
00:37:28and
00:37:29maybe
00:37:29it's
00:37:30kind
00:37:30of
00:37:30silly
00:37:30but
00:37:31I've kept
00:37:32it all this
00:37:32time.
00:37:33He pulls out
00:37:35this
00:37:35Red Wings jersey
00:37:37and on the back
00:37:39it has my last
00:37:40name on it.
00:37:42He says
00:37:43I actually
00:37:44got this
00:37:44for you
00:37:45when I bought
00:37:47those Red Wing tickets
00:37:48all that time
00:37:49ago.
00:37:54Christopher
00:37:55initially bought
00:37:55those tickets
00:37:56in college for my
00:37:57birthday and I told
00:37:59him I never wanted
00:38:00to go to a Red Wings
00:38:01hockey game with
00:38:02him.
00:38:04And I said to him
00:38:06you know
00:38:07maybe after
00:38:08all of this
00:38:09maybe we can
00:38:10go see a Red Wings
00:38:11game sometime.
00:38:12You know
00:38:13maybe we can
00:38:13be friends.
00:38:15I think
00:38:16okay
00:38:17I have this
00:38:18foot in the door.
00:38:22He says
00:38:23I'm really sorry
00:38:24I did that
00:38:25to you this morning.
00:38:26I just had to
00:38:27talk to you
00:38:28and I thought
00:38:28you would never
00:38:29talk to me
00:38:31unless I did
00:38:32something like this.
00:38:38He has this
00:38:39moment where
00:38:40he says
00:38:42that he's
00:38:43scared of
00:38:44prison
00:38:45and he says
00:38:46I would never
00:38:46survive in

00:38:48I think I could
00:38:49get in a lot
00:38:50of trouble
00:38:50for what I
00:38:50did today.
00:38:53He's panicked.

00:39:09believe you.
00:39:10And he says

00:39:53he says
00:39:55I see
00:39:56well I
00:39:56think that's
00:39:57the only
00:39:57way

00:39:59really
00:40:00trust you

00:40:41that his
00:40:42integrity

00:41:07he asked
00:41:08me he was
00:41:08like are
00:41:09you okay
00:41:14I didn't
00:41:14want him

00:41:16that I
00:41:16was reacting
00:41:17to the

00:41:19was disgusted
00:41:19by him
00:41:20and terrified
00:41:25when everything
00:41:26was finished
00:41:28he said

00:41:33you cannot
00:41:34imagine how

00:54:58didn't like
00:54:59the surprise

00:55:56making
00:55:57them
00:55:57in a

00:55:58and then
00:55:59raping
00:55:59them
00:56:02but if
00:56:03she was not
00:56:03okay with
00:56:04this

00:56:05in the
00:56:05beginning
00:56:05that's
00:56:05rape
00:56:07knowing
00:56:08knowing
00:56:08knowing
00:56:08things
00:56:08he did
00:56:09to her
00:56:10I'm
00:56:10looking
00:56:10across
00:56:11the
00:56:11table
00:56:11at him
00:56:11and I
00:56:12am
00:56:12thinking
00:56:12that
00:56:12he
00:56:12is
00:56:12pure
00:56:13evil
00:56:42he's
00:56:43trying
00:56:43to
00:56:43to
00:56:43act
00:56:44a
00:56:44certain
00:56:44way
00:56:44if
00:56:44they're
00:56:45being
00:56:45sexually
00:56:45assaulted
00:56:45they
00:56:46should
00:56:46fight
00:56:46they
00:56:47should
00:56:47run
00:56:47and if
00:56:48they
00:56:48don't
00:56:48do
00:56:48that
00:56:50they're
00:56:50not
00:56:50believed
00:56:51so I'm
00:56:51going to do a buckle swab on the right side
00:56:53and a buckle swab on the left side
00:56:58there was a lot more information out there that we had to try to find
00:57:13at the hospital Sam mentioned that he removed all the hair from his body
00:57:17so he could avoid detection DNA wise
00:57:20he didn't want to leave hair behind so he tried to chemically remove a bunch of his
00:57:25hair and I had a bad skin reaction
00:57:29and when he took his pants and his shirt off you could see chemical burns on his body
00:57:37I want to put a case together that makes him go to jail for the longest time possible
00:58:03I got a call from Detective Matucci and we've worked together for a long time so I was kind of
00:58:09like okay what's really up that's a good one but what's going on what do you need and no no
00:58:15I'm serious and in my mind at that point I'm formulating okay what is this going to look like when
00:58:20we go to court
00:58:22I had just hope that a jury would believe Sam and she was extremely believable and had this long history
00:58:28of telling him no
00:58:33this is a prepaid call from Christopher Thomas
00:58:37I don't know how much to say not to say
00:58:40I know you as a loving caring kind person
00:58:43yes I am
00:58:46and I don't know
00:58:47and I don't know if nothing snapped inside you
00:58:50no nothing snapped inside me
00:58:52everything that happened on that day
00:58:54was loving kind and caring
00:58:56I did not hurt anybody
00:59:05we had been in touch with the prosecutor's office and Christopher was set to be arraigned and so Robin and
00:59:14I streamed the arraignment
00:59:17there on my tv screen in my living room seeing him in that orange jumpsuit and hearing my name
00:59:24and hearing the actual crimes he was charged with you know there were very heavy words
00:59:30I charged Christopher Thomas with kidnapping home invasion first torture aggravated stalking and four counts of criminal sexual conduct first
00:59:40degree
00:59:40he stalked the victim in this case for over a decade
00:59:44Christopher pleads not guilty to all of the charges and I'm not surprised
00:59:52the judge agreed there'd be no safety for Sam if Chris was released
00:59:57and so she denied bail
01:00:00I didn't have to find another plan to hide or escape or live in fear that he could just come
01:00:07to my home
01:00:08he was locked up and it felt like another win
01:00:12hang on
01:00:13all right hold on one sec
01:00:16all right so it's 1024
01:00:20every piece of information that we got was important we did our best to locate the trackers
01:00:25initially he had outright denied having any trackers on on any vehicles
01:00:41he didn't want to admit to a misdemeanor of tracking somebody
01:00:46and meanwhile he's looking at several life offenses for what he had just done
01:00:51nowhere could I find them
01:00:53I even told Sam that I can't believe that I'm being beaten by this guy on these placements on these
01:00:57trackers
01:00:58one of the cars we put it up on a rack where we could get underneath it
01:01:05he put them up underneath the bumpers
01:01:07these particular trackers
01:01:08you only get a couple of weeks worth of battery life on them
01:01:21so he had to travel to all these different locations to constantly check the batteries
01:01:27charge the batteries and place the trackers back on and off all these vehicles
01:01:32it seemed like when he was not at work or sleeping he was tracking her
01:01:36so when we looked at his phone I can't even count how many videos and pictures of Sam
01:01:43it's been 10 years 10 plus years and this guy is not stopped
01:01:54after 2014 after the restraining order
01:01:58my life moved on but his didn't
01:02:01but that whole time I just had the feeling like I was being watched
01:02:05while I lived in Kansas City
01:02:07there's a woman named Sarah Mott that comments on my blog
01:02:12so Sarah and I had some email sort of exchanges
01:02:18I later found out that Christopher had posed as Sarah Mott
01:02:24he made some fake account and he was following me
01:02:35at Christopher's house there were receipts from stores around town
01:02:41which led us to look at their video surveillance and actually catch them on camera
01:02:46buying all these things
01:02:55I filed a PPO in July and it's denied
01:03:01August and September he's building this bunker to kidnap me in and hold me in
01:03:08he spent thousands of dollars on creating this this box so he could spend time with Sam
01:03:14and do God only knows what
01:03:19to see someone like that who was able to hold a regular job who was able to appear as a
01:03:26normal
01:03:26productive member of society who's then got this other side of him going on in the background
01:03:32was really scary
01:03:33ever been arrested before?
01:03:36yeah, I don't remember the year
01:03:39what was it for?
01:03:41harassment stalking
01:03:52I got a text message and it was the detective from Grand Traverse and he said can you call me?
01:03:57so I called him and he said do you remember a guy named Christopher Thomas?
01:04:05and I think I said I will never forget a guy named Christopher Thomas
01:04:22in 2009 I was in college full-time and working at a residential treatment center and that's where I met
01:04:29Christopher
01:04:31one day he asked if I wanted to go to dinner
01:04:37and I didn't really think too much of it but apparently he did
01:04:44so next he wants to know if I want to go ice skating
01:04:47I did not want to go ice skating with him
01:04:51but that's when I was younger and still trying to be nice
01:04:54and so I told him that I had studying to do instead of just flat out saying no I don't
01:04:59want to go
01:05:02when I set those boundaries and he didn't like it things kind of escalated after that
01:05:09the spring semester I was sitting in class and I would see him drive through the parking lot on campus
01:05:19not long after that my friend was at the house
01:05:23and I looked out the window and I was like he's outside
01:05:27but he was on foot
01:05:29and my friend got up and ran out of the house and chased him
01:05:33I filed a PPO that night
01:05:35and the judge signed it ex parte which means there was no court hearing
01:05:39this was serious enough that it was necessitated
01:05:45after that you know it's just a matter of
01:05:48every time you see him you have to document it
01:05:55all summer he'd drive by and I'd be like well am I calling the police today or am I not
01:06:00calling the police today
01:06:04and then we got a new prosecutor
01:06:06and she called me
01:06:08and she said you know
01:06:10all of this is going on
01:06:11like do you want to press charges
01:06:13and I said yeah absolutely
01:06:15I'm tired of this
01:06:24he got 24 months of probation
01:06:26and he was in jail for a few days
01:06:28and he got credit for time served
01:06:31he's punished for what he does
01:06:33he was held accountable for that in 2010
01:06:36and instead of changing his behavior
01:06:39he found a new victim
01:06:40I always knew that there would be somebody else
01:06:44and at that point you know I didn't know who
01:06:47I didn't know where
01:06:48I didn't know when
01:06:49and when I talked to the detective
01:06:50there was like this guilty like he did do it to somebody else
01:06:54I was right
01:06:55I knew this was going to happen
01:06:59how could this have gone on so long with me
01:07:01if he's done something like this before
01:07:04the system's not set up to really protect and defend women
01:07:09a victim of rape or sexual assault
01:07:16doesn't necessarily see justice most of the time
01:07:19so what's going to be different about me
01:07:24I found out that the defense wanted to have Christopher
01:07:27evaluated for criminal responsibility
01:07:29which means
01:07:30was he at the time of the offense able to understand
01:07:33right from wrong
01:07:36the risk always is if someone comes back
01:07:39and the report says that they are are insane
01:07:42then what happens is they're hospitalized
01:07:44and then after a certain time they're released
01:07:47it was several competency evaluations
01:07:51and each time he was ruled responsible for his actions
01:07:57you know I want to get some closure for myself
01:08:01and it just drags on
01:08:04his attorney wanted to get an independent competency exam
01:08:08to compare to the state exam
01:08:10but they came up with the same conclusion
01:08:14he just said that
01:08:15there's crazy and insane
01:08:17and you're not
01:08:18neither you're
01:08:19you're just an isolated
01:08:22lonely depressed person
01:08:25yeah
01:08:26that's what he said
01:08:36there were a few conversations that he had with his mother
01:08:39when she would get upset
01:08:40and it was one phone call in particular
01:08:43really
01:08:45it kind of scared me a little bit
01:08:46but anyways I'm sorry that you were so lonely
01:08:49and I'm sorry
01:08:52I made you get your own place
01:08:54I should just
01:08:54I should just let you stay here
01:08:58no it wouldn't
01:08:59it wouldn't have mattered
01:08:59I think it would have
01:09:01cause
01:09:03I don't think you even had her on your mind
01:09:06at that point
01:09:07I mean
01:09:07no
01:09:08no
01:09:09every day for
01:09:11the last
01:09:1212 years
01:09:15I never heard you mention her name once
01:09:18so we could have got you help or
01:09:21counseling or something
01:09:23we could have worked through all this
01:09:25could have been a whole different path of this path
01:09:29right
01:09:32yeah
01:09:32you thought I could talk to one person
01:09:37yeah the person that didn't want you anywhere near her
01:09:40he's so far gone
01:09:41so far obsessed with her that
01:09:43I believe
01:09:44if he had the opportunity
01:09:46he would do something again
01:09:52we do have to always be prepared for trial
01:09:55but we knew that there was a potential for a plea bargain in this case
01:10:01so we get a call from Jesse Christopher's attorney
01:10:04and we started talking about what those pleas would look like
01:10:08and Jesse came back a few days later
01:10:11and said he's not ever going to admit that he raped her
01:10:14he says it was consensual
01:10:18despite his attorney's attempts to
01:10:22explain the concept of consent
01:10:25Christopher will not plead guilty to the criminal sexual assault charges
01:10:31we didn't rape Sam
01:10:34but if she was not okay with this
01:10:36as you said in the beginning
01:10:37that's rape
01:10:39he's delusional
01:10:40he thinks that you know
01:10:41she's consenting to having sex with him in this box
01:10:44and she's in a situation where
01:10:46her life was at stake
01:10:48and she's trying to survive
01:10:52I had conflicting feelings
01:10:54I thought a plea deal
01:10:56seemed like a cheap way out for him
01:10:58why should he get a pass at some of the charges
01:11:01just because he didn't agree
01:11:04or doesn't understand consent
01:11:06Noel really said
01:11:09yes this case is a slam dunk case
01:11:11but if this does go to trial
01:11:13you're going to be dragged through the mud
01:11:18you can put the best case in the world together
01:11:21we don't like to leave it in the hands of a jury
01:11:24sometimes juries get it wrong
01:11:27dropping the criminal sexual conduct charges
01:11:30didn't feel like full justice to me in some ways
01:11:33I wanted everyone to be able to point at Christopher
01:11:36and say this person is a rapist
01:11:38but in the end
01:11:40I decided to trust Noel's instincts
01:11:43and say yes
01:11:45let's go for a plea deal
01:11:47and let's try to make him look as awful as we can
01:11:55when I asked Noel who the judge assigned to the case is
01:12:00she tells me it's Judge Elzenheimer
01:12:05that was the same guy who denied my PPO
01:12:08how could this judge be assigned to this case?
01:12:14and I'm like either that's going to be a good thing
01:12:17because he's going to feel awful
01:12:20or potentially it could be bad
01:12:28a Traverse City man accused of kidnapping a woman
01:12:31and holding her hostage in a soundproof bunker
01:12:33took a plea deal today
01:12:35is your belief that you acted in such a way
01:12:38as to create a severe mental pain on her part
01:12:42yeah
01:12:42Thomas bled guilty to kidnapping, torture and aggravated stalking
01:12:46all other charges will be dropped when he's sentenced
01:12:49Christopher does choose to accept the plea deal
01:12:52and finally I get a date for sentencing
01:12:55it's going to happen February 5th, 2024
01:13:02the day of the sentencing, we go into the courtroom
01:13:05we have Robin, me, Sam
01:13:07we have Christopher's family right there
01:13:10Christopher's not there yet
01:13:12but the stage has been set and we're all holding our breaths
01:13:20Christopher enters in his orange jumpsuit with his hands bound
01:13:26and he's there in the flesh in front of me
01:13:35I wanted to make sure that the judge heard all the details of what exactly she went through that day
01:13:42she agreed to have sex with him so that
01:13:46hoping that he would fulfill his end of this bizarre bargain and let her go
01:13:51Noel hoped that this would persuade the judge to sentence outside of the guidelines
01:13:57he then penetrated her with his penis to the point that she was crying and shaking
01:14:02it just felt like such a private thing
01:14:05that would just be out in the open
01:14:06but I understood why she needed to do it
01:14:10so I would ask the court to begin to think about the duration
01:14:15of both the aggravated stalking and the kidnapping
01:14:18about the meticulous preparation that the defendant took
01:14:22I felt like this was the first time
01:14:26after enduring that whole day with him
01:14:29that I felt free to really
01:14:34tell him some of my true thoughts
01:14:37I don't want to address Christopher
01:14:39as he has not honored my requests
01:14:42nor shown he values my thoughts or feelings in over a decade
01:14:48I wondered if I would see daylight again
01:14:52I shook and sobbed after he raped me
01:14:56I wasn't sure he would stop
01:15:00if I tried to push him away would he hold me down again
01:15:06I never want to worry about him hurting me or another woman ever again
01:15:11I ask that the court protect myself and other women
01:15:17from being stalked and raped by this sick and destructive man
01:15:21by considering the longest sentence permitted by law
01:15:27thank you ma'am
01:15:28I guess when you see someone as strong as Sam is
01:15:31and as unshakable as Sam is
01:15:34and then you see them break down a little bit
01:15:37it just it really spoke to the depths of what this person had had done to her
01:15:46Chris got up there with his three pages of statement that he was ready to make
01:15:54I just remember thinking
01:15:57oh God I don't want to hear whatever you have to say
01:16:00I wish I could take it all back I can't
01:16:04I really can't
01:16:05I wish I could
01:16:10I had a lot of wanted to say
01:16:12he tucked his three pages of speech away
01:16:18and just apologized to the people he hurt
01:16:23and then stood there and waited for his sentence
01:16:27so you do have that one prior missed in here
01:16:30you don't have a juvenile record
01:16:32you have a master's degree
01:16:34you're very well educated
01:16:35you had a good job
01:16:37this court itself has let me down before
01:16:41what if they only give 20, 25 years
01:16:46and then I need to move and go into hiding and change my name so that I feel safe
01:16:51please God don't let it be just 20 years because 20 years is nothing
01:16:56but this stalking behavior and obsessive behavior already happened in Big Rapids back in 2010
01:17:02you knew what the result of this kind of behavior would be
01:17:07and you continued to engage in it with a different person
01:17:11the judge said that he felt Christopher was not able to be rehabilitated
01:17:19even after you were sitting in jail
01:17:21you told your mother that nothing would have mattered
01:17:25that nothing would have stopped you from doing what you were going to do
01:17:32that's an extraordinary statement
01:17:34all of those things in concert lead me to believe that a sentence within the guideline range is inappropriate
01:17:39the judge started talking about a reasonable life expectancy for someone Christopher Thomas's age
01:17:49and that's when we got really excited
01:17:52with regard to count one
01:17:53kidnapping you will serve 40 to 60 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections
01:17:58at the time of sentencing Christopher Thomas was 39 years old
01:18:01and Judge Elzenheimer gave him 40 to 60 years
01:18:05so he's going to be almost 80 before he even has a chance of getting out of prison
01:18:09if somehow you are released at some point in your future
01:18:15then it is a requirement that you will have a lifetime GPS
01:18:20so that you will know where you are all the time for the rest of your days
01:18:25the judge is nice little piece of
01:18:27and if you get out you got to wear an ankle monitor the rest of your life
01:18:30it's like okay you know thank you
01:18:33you know Christopher is in a place where
01:18:36the worst of the worst people are and
01:18:39he needs to be there
01:18:42to do something like that to another human being
01:18:44I just don't understand it
01:18:47it was a little difficult to watch
01:18:49but I just remember being really proud of her for doing that
01:18:51I'm very proud of her
01:18:55sorry
01:19:02Justice is a funny thing
01:19:04it doesn't necessarily come in the form of prison years
01:19:10I can't ever go back to
01:19:14before I was kidnapped
01:19:20and that's something I had to grieve
01:19:24are you ready?
01:19:26yeah
01:19:27but knowing that I'm finally turning the page of this
01:19:40and that I should feel safe with him off the street
01:19:44and that I'm protected
01:19:51meant a lot, I felt free
01:20:05and that is our program for tonight
