00:00New Yorkers have been urged to limit their time outdoors and wear masks as smoke from wildfires in Canada continues
00:06to blanket the city.
00:08Many residents are left concerned over air quality and wondering if it's safe to run the air conditioner in these
00:14conditions.
00:14We've gathered some information from experts.
00:17A Vanderbilt University professor of medicine told WJW that running the AC is fine as long as you avoid using
00:25the fresh air setting.
00:26He said, quote, I would try to set your air conditioning on recirculate so that you're not breathing in as
00:32much of the outdoor air.
00:33And if you have good level filters on your air conditioner, make sure that they're in place and that you're
00:38using them.
00:39Carrier.com notes that most air conditioners operate by cooling the air inside the house and recirculating it, not pulling
00:46in air from outside.
00:47Outdoor air can also enter your home through open windows and vents.
00:51So the Environmental Protection Agency recommends using a portable air purifier to help improve indoor air quality.
00:58The agency also knows that if you're using a window AC unit, make sure the seal areas between the unit
01:04and the window are as tight as possible.
