07:40and military might behind
07:42President Trump. So in the areas in which
07:44you can work together to get agreements
07:46and get things going, moving forward, you
07:48still need to engage with President Trump.
07:50Everyone else, the Europeans say they will
07:52push for their own interests.
07:53Okay, Maria, today I thank you so much for
07:56that live update. Now moving on,
07:58as EU foreign ministers gather in Luxembourg
08:00today for talks, Russia has launched
08:02a round of ballistic missile strikes on
08:04Kiev overnight, striking, as you heard
08:06there from Maria, the capital's historic
08:08Assumption Cathedral. That's one of Ukraine's
08:10most significant religious and
08:12cultural sites. This as both
08:14Ukraine and Moldova are set to formally
08:16open the first phase of negotiations
08:18on joining the European Union tonight
08:20in Luxembourg. For the latest, we can
08:22go straight over to Luxembourg, where our
08:24correspondent Mareg Gwynn is standing by
08:26for us this morning. Good morning, Mareg.
08:28At this moment, a long time coming
08:30for both Ukraine and Moldova.
08:34Yes, indeed, Maeve, as
08:36you just said there. Tonight, both
08:38Ukraine and Moldova formally opening
08:40this first phase of talks
08:42on joining the EU. Both
08:44countries did file for EU application
08:46in the wake of Russia's invasion of
08:48Ukraine in 2022.
08:50But then, Viktor Orbán's
08:52veto on the opening of
08:54talks with Ukraine scuppered that
08:55completely, held Moldova back
08:58as well, because both Ukraine and Moldova have been
09:00informally paired on
09:02their journey towards becoming EU members.
09:04The election of Peter Maggia, of course,
09:06in April changed all of that, and that's
09:08allowed for these talks to kick off
09:10here in Luxembourg later tonight. And I'm
09:12pleased to say I'm now joined by Moldova's
09:14Deputy Prime Minister for European
09:16Integration, Kristina
09:18Gerasimov. Minister, really good to have you
09:20with us on Euronews. Firstly,
09:22can you tell us how significant a
09:24moment this is for Moldova,
09:26especially considering that the issue of EU
09:28membership does divide the
09:30population, as we've seen in recent votes,
09:32including in the referendum back in 2024?
09:35It is
09:36indeed a historic milestone for my
09:38country today. The fact that we are
09:40moving forward with the opening of
09:41negotiations by clusters, that
09:44means the beginning of
09:46a complex reform process
09:48meant to transform our
09:50society, democratic institutions,
09:52our economy, to prepare basically Moldova
09:54with the backbone
09:56of the reforms necessary for
09:58EU accession. This is also
10:00a strong signal for us that the EU
10:03is also getting ready to
10:06receive new member states. And that is
10:08always a very good sign.
10:11I want to ask you about this process,
10:13which has coupled both Moldova and
10:15Ukraine on their membership bids.
10:17This is meant to you being held back by
10:19the veto over the countries, including
10:20Hungary. This could come back to become
10:23another problem. Is it time
10:25now for Ukraine and Moldova to be
10:27decoupled so that you can progress
10:28based on your own merits?
10:30We're very grateful that this
10:32opportunity has been provided for
10:34us, unfortunately, by the tragic
10:36circumstances that Ukraine is still
10:38going through. Ukraine is still
10:40fighting for democracy and for the
10:42security of Moldova, of Europe as
10:45such. At the same time, European
10:47Union enlargement policy is a merit-based
10:50process, which means that the reforms
10:52that every candidate country is
10:55conducting depends on their own merits.
10:58So we very much hope that we will be
11:01able, as soon as possible, to open the
11:03next clusters and continue with our own
11:06reform pathways.
11:07So that means being decoupled from
11:09Ukraine, because we know that Russia is
11:11very willing and able to capitalize on
11:13the feelings of frustrations in some
11:15populations, including your own, with
11:16the slowness sometimes of this process.
11:19So is it time now for Moldova to be
11:21separated from Ukraine in this process?
11:23Decoupling or coupling is one of the
11:25issues that Russia uses in its narratives
11:28against countries that would like to get
11:30closer to the EU. This is the time for both
11:33us and Ukraine to move forward and to be
11:35led to move forward with our reform paths.
11:38Finally, Minister, before I let you go, just one
11:40question, because I know several officials in
11:42Romania have been floating the prospect
11:43on Moldova, excuse me, have been floating the
11:46prospect of unification with Romania as an
11:49alternative. Is this something that you could
11:51contemplate?
11:52Our only plan is to get ready for EU membership
11:56by 2030. This is what we have societal support
11:59for, and we're working hard to make that
12:01objective a reality.
12:03OK, Minister Gerasimo, thank you so much for
12:05joining us on Euronews. Remember, those talks
12:07on both Ukraine and Moldova and also in Montenegro
12:10are taking place in Luxembourg later in the day.
12:12For now, back to you.
12:13OK, Mary Gwynne, thank you so much there.
12:15And of course, to your guest. Now, the EU's tech chief
12:18has fired a warning about the risks of relying on U.S.
12:21tech companies, especially in the areas of
12:23cybersecurity and defense. This as European investors
12:26and researchers fear that Europe will be cut off
12:29from frontier AI models. Our Jakub Janus has the story.
12:34Washington has just reminded Europe who really
12:36holds the power in the age of artificial intelligence.
12:39Winning the AI race will demand a new spirit of
12:43patriotism and national loyalty in Silicon Valley.
12:47And last Friday, one of the AI race leaders, Anthropic,
12:50pressed the kill switch on its most advanced models,
12:53Fable 5 and Mythos 5. And following a surprise
12:56directive from the Trump administration, citing
12:59national security, the company was forced to ban
13:02all non-U.S. citizens from its frontier technology.
13:05And for Europe, this is a long-overdue wake-up call.
13:08But will it actually wake up?
13:11Across the continent, research labs, tech firms,
13:15and even some hospitals, have spent the last year piloting
13:18these U.S.-made systems for key operations.
13:21Now they have learned that their digital infrastructure
13:24can be unplugged overnight.
13:26And European leaders across the spectrum,
13:28from France's far-right presidential candidate,
13:31Jordan Bardella, to the European Commission's own spokesperson,
13:34Thomas Renier, are in re-agreement,
13:37arguing that nations that do not develop and control their own AI models
13:41will remain entirely dependent on the choices of foreign powers.
13:46What's even more interesting, earlier this month,
13:48the European Commission announced its ambitious plan
13:51for European strategic autonomy in technology.
13:54Anchored by the new Cloud and AI Development Act,
13:58the plan aims to triple Europe's data center capacity,
14:01build massive AI gigafactories,
14:03and push for the secure open-source alternatives.
14:07However, Europe is currently trapped in a massive compute gap.
14:11While the EU scrambles to build infrastructure,
14:14the sheer scale of investment from the U.S. giants dwarfs European efforts.
14:18And relying on moonshot projects alone might be simply too slow.
14:22Another option could be a coalition of the middle powers.
14:26By teaming up with nations like the UK, Canada and Japan,
14:30Europe could pull its fragmented computing power,
14:33creating a sort of AI insurance policy.
14:36However, regardless of what the EU does, it better do it quickly.
14:41Otherwise, these sudden kill switches
14:43will become a regular feature of the continent's digital future.
14:52Jacob Giannis reporting for us there.
14:54And now it's time for an update on the FIFA World Cup.
15:02The tournament kept us all very busy, of course, this weekend,
15:05but especially our sports correspondent, Vincenzo Genovese,
15:07who joins us now to bring us up to speed.
15:09Yes, maybe indeed. Good morning. The party's on.
15:13World Cup is in full swing. 1.2 billion people watching the first opening game.
15:18Millions of viewers for the weekend games. Let's get straight to the results.
15:22Group B only draws Canada 1-1, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
15:27Qatar, Switzerland, the same results, 1-1. So no leaders in this group,
15:33all the teams at one point. Group D, we had some surprise.
15:39We had Australia beating Turkey at 2-0. This was the surprise of the weekend.
15:44United States a very confident and very dominant debut 4-1 to Paraguay.
15:49And so United States and Australia leading the group.
15:52Then Group C, Scotland beat Haiti 1-0, quite expected.
15:57And then Brazil-Morocco 1-1. This was the most awaited game of the weekend.
16:02It was vibrant. Brazil was on the ropes in the first half.
16:07They conceded the first goal to Saibari. They conceded many occasions to Moroccans.
16:11And they were saved by Vinicius, by a brilliant curling shoot by Vinicius.
16:18But, well, the second half was more balanced.
16:20But the general impression to me was that Morocco at this moment is better than Brazil.
16:25And Brazil's coach, of course, under pressure, the Italian guy.
16:27Yeah, Carlo Ancelotti is being grilled.
16:30He's been criticised by the Brazilian press.
16:32Many say that the players he has selected are not good enough.
16:36But I'd say let Carlo Ancelotti cook because he knows the job.
16:39And it's not uncommon in the history of the World Cup that teams go deep into the tournament after a
16:45poor starting match.
16:46And what about the other European teams?
16:48Well, we had Group F. We have Sweden defeating 5-1 Tunisia.
16:53We have 2-2, a thrilling draw between the Netherlands and Japan.
16:58And, of course, Group E, the Germany, the Côte d'Ivoire beat 1-0 Ecuador.
17:04And Germany, another awaited match, beat 7-1 Curaçao.
17:09I would say an easy match.
17:11This reminded me of 2002 when Germany started with an 8-0 to Saudi Arabia.
17:16Indeed, it was an easy one, but, of course, highly celebrated.
17:18And we can actually get the view from Berlin now and head over to the capital and bring in our
17:22correspondent Laura Fleischmann.
17:24Good morning, Laura.
17:24Tell us, what is the reaction there to Germany's good, very good World Cup debut?
17:31Good morning to you, too, Maeve and Vincenzo.
17:34And, well, there was a sense of relief to be felt here in Germany with this amazing success for the
17:40German national team.
17:41The 7-1 scoreline, of course, reminded us of the game against Brazil, the famous game where Germany also won
17:487-1.
17:49And after yesterday's game, there was a spontaneous car convoy on Kudam, one of the biggest boulevards in Berlin.
17:56And people were very happy about the success, especially since before there wasn't a lot of excitement about this World
18:02Cup.
18:03OK, Laura Fleischmann, thank you so much for that.
18:05Let's see if the Red Devils do that well.
18:07And there's such a buzz tonight in Belgium.
18:08Just tell us, what should we look out for now?
18:11Well, tonight we have, as we said, the Red Devils.
18:15We have Belgium against Egypt tonight.
18:17So Brussels is really bracing.
18:19We have also Iran debut at 3 a.m. against New Zealand.
18:22and let's see how will be their reception in Los Angeles Stadium.
18:26And, of course, we have also another group, Group H, with Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and Spain versus Cup Verde.
18:35Spain, to me, Maeve, is one of the most favourite teams.
18:38They have good organisation, good defence.
18:40They are very confident after having won the Euro Cup two years ago,
18:47after beating England, France, Germany and Italy.
18:50They have a star, a rising star.
18:52Not anymore a rising star.
18:54La Mia Mal.
18:55I will put Spain, together with France, as a top favourite, even ahead of Argentina, for this World Cup.
19:01OK, Vincenzo Genovese, thank you so much.
19:03It will be, indeed, a very exciting night tonight.
19:05But that does bring this edition of Europe Today to an end.
19:08Thank you so much for tuning in.
19:09Take care and see you soon on Euronews.
