00:00Why did the anime Free become queer without ever explicitly addressing it?
00:06I make videos about movies and TV series, and now about anime.
00:10And we're going to talk about the representation of the LGBTQIA+ community.
00:13in movies and TV series, and if you like it, subscribe.
00:16Free is not officially a gay anime,
00:19But if so many people have read it that way, it's not by chance.
00:22It's basically a swimming anime.
00:24We follow boys who are linked by sport, rivalry, friendship and the past.
00:28And officially, it's not being marketed as an LGBTQIA+ romance at all.
00:32The themes that are listed are mostly swimming, sports, school, clubs and friendship.
00:37But then, why did so many people perceive it as very cheerful?
00:40The anime makes extensive use of emotional tropes associated with romance.
00:44the intense rivalry between Rin and Haru,
00:47dramatic glances, reunions, jealousy, past wounds,
00:51the bodies filmed with genuine sensuality.
00:53And this is where we touch on an important phenomenon, the queer subtext.
00:57A work of art confirms nothing, but it creates enough tension.
01:01of intimacy and romantic codes so that the queer audience can recognize themselves in it.
