Football is more than what happens on the pitch ⚽❤️

The 5ASIDE crew visits Design FC in New Jersey, a global non-profit initiative that uses football and design to empower young people and help them tell their stories through creativity.

By giving participants full control over designing their own football jerseys, Design FC allows them to express their identity, experiences and vision of the world through the game they love.

During the visit, the team speaks with the founder of the project to learn how football can become a powerful tool for education, self-expression and community impact.

00:00But these aren't the national team jerseys. They look a little bit different.
00:03Like, what is this? We are at the epicenter of what the World Cup should be.
00:08The World Cup is about to start in New York City and that means that right now
00:11all the national teams are delivering new jerseys. Mikey, Adidas, Puma, you name it.
00:17Everyone is trying to get the best kit on the market. But we are at the best
00:21place to find a jersey. We're in Design FC's actual premiere for the jerseys
00:27that they have created with children from all across the globe.
00:31This is where you need to be. And we're going to talk to the people who have made this possible.
00:35What this represents is exactly what software in this country has been missing.
00:40The culture, the community from around the world, all coming together in the United States.
00:44Let's hear it from the people who've made this possible.
00:48My name is Omri. I'm the founder, executive director of Design FC.
00:51Let me first tell you about Design FC. We're a youth design nonprofit
00:55and we work with youth around the world, teaching them creative skills
00:59by having them design their own sport jerseys and apparel.
01:03So for us, there's like a whole side of the game, the creative side of the game
01:07that a lot of young people don't know about.
01:09And so through like free after school programs, creative initiatives,
01:13we expose kids to like the creative side of the game.
01:17And so for us, it's all about like using the sport jersey to like unlock the kids' eyes
01:22to what is possible when it comes to like the world of art and design.
01:26And then we go and partner with professional athletes, brands, leagues, teams,
01:32and like bring those types of partners into our programming environment
01:37for like young kids to collaborate with the best of the best.
01:40I'm Oliver Steinglass. I'm the COO of Design FC.
01:43And we are at the epicenter of what the World Cup should be.
01:48What are all these kids where like I'm seeing jerseys from all over the world,
01:52but these aren't the national team jerseys.
01:54They look a little bit different. Like, what is this?
01:56Yeah. So for the World Cup, Design FC launched the Youth Creative Collective,
02:00which is an initiative to connect youth from around the world
02:03through sport design and storytelling.
02:05So we have 37 nonprofit organizations that we've partnered with,
02:11and they each selected a student between the ages of 12 to 18 to redesign their national team kit.
02:18So we have literally, you can see on the map, like everywhere from Canada, Croatia, Japan, Argentina,
02:27Portugal, all across the world.
02:29And each jersey tells like a unique student-led, youth-driven story about their country.
