00:01Washington has just reminded Europe who really holds the power in the age of artificial intelligence.
00:06Winning the AI race will demand a new spirit of patriotism and national loyalty in Silicon Valley.
00:14And last Friday, one of the AI race leaders, Anthropic, pressed the kill switch on its most advanced models, Fable
00:205 and Mythos 5.
00:22And following a surprise directive from the Trump administration citing national security,
00:27the company was forced to ban all non-US citizens from its frontier technology.
00:32And for Europe, this is a long overdue wake-up call. But will it actually wake up?
00:38Across the continent, research labs, tech firms and even some hospitals
00:43have spent the last year piloting these US-made systems for key operations.
00:48Now they have learned that their digital infrastructure can be unplugged overnight.
00:52And European leaders across the spectrum, from France's far-right presidential candidate Jordan Bardella
00:59to the European Commission's own spokesperson Thomas Renier, are in re-agreement arguing that nations
01:05that do not develop and control their own AI models will remain entirely dependent on the choices of foreign powers.
01:13What's even more interesting, earlier this month the European Commission announced its ambitious plan
01:18for European strategic autonomy in technology.
01:21Anchored by the new Cloud and AI Development Act, the plan aims to triple Europe's data center capacity,
01:28build massive AI gigafactories and push for the secure open-source alternatives.
01:34However, Europe is currently trapped in a massive compute gap.
01:38While the EU scrambles to build infrastructure, the sheer scale of investment from the US giants dwarfs European efforts.
01:45And relying on moonshot projects alone might be simply too slow.
01:50Another option could be a coalition of the middle powers.
01:53By teaming up with nations like the UK, Canada and Japan, Europe could pull its fragmented computing power,
02:00creating a sort of AI insurance policy.
02:03However, regardless of what the EU does, it better do it quickly.
02:08Otherwise, these sudden kill switches will become a regular feature of the continent's digital future.
