00:07it's alive, and in fact it is. This is no ordinary cloud, but a cloud of locusts. Basically, if this

00:15wasn't recorded, no one would believe it. But as you can see, this is really something locusts do.

00:20Swarms of locusts are always on the move, and they can travel very long distances. Some species

00:25can go as far as 81 miles or more in a day. They can stay in the air for a

00:30long time,

00:30and they often fly across the Red Sea without stopping. In 1945, a swarm of locusts flew from

00:36the northwest part of Africa all the way to Great Britain. In 1988, another swarm flew from West

00:42Africa to the Caribbean, which is more than 3,100 miles away. And it's not all good news when they

00:48show up. Locust swarms destroy crops and do a lot of damage to agriculture, which can-

01:00...can lead to famine and people dying of hunger. Locusts live in many places around the world,

01:04but in Africa, where people live off substance farming, they cause the most damage.

01:22than a half a square mile. Each locust can eat as much plant matter as its own weight every day,

01:39as half of France's human population.

03:15in colorado when the weather's right lenticular clouds can form over the rocky mountains these

03:20clouds often show up in part of the mountains called front range not only do lenticular clouds

03:30make really cool scenery but they also can cause strong winds it's a little bit stranger than that

03:35though in one place it can cause strong winds but just a few hundred feet away it can make the

03:40air

03:40completely still people think that lenticular clouds are one of the reasons that people claim

03:45to have seen ufos throughout history these clouds really could be mistaken for flying saucers

04:36all the mackerel scales in the rhyme refer to surrocumulus or altocumulus clouds which are

04:42middle level clouds that look like piles of snow or bro this man is saying a bunch of mumbo jumbo

05:04also thin wispy surus clouds which are a sign of strong high altitude winds are sometimes known as

05:10mare's tails most of the time mackerel skies mean that the weather's about to change so ships would lower

05:24now that's pretty cool looking people in the polar regions of the world like scandinavia and canada

06:07stratosphere is below negative 78 degrees celsius which turns any moisture in the air into super cooled

06:13liquid or ice crystals most of the time these kinds of temperatures only happen at high latitudes in

06:18the winter no matter how pretty they look nacreous clouds also have a dark side these clouds make it

06:23easier for the earth's ozone layer to break down the ozone layer is an important part of our atmosphere

06:29that protects us from the sun's dangerous ultraviolet rays the ozone layer which is made up of a certain

06:35time i won't care about that we like the clouds baby type of molecular oxygen reacts with gases like

06:40chlorine and bromine because of the ice crystals in the clouds scientists think that just one atom of

06:46chlorine in the stratosphere can destroy more than a hundred thousand molecules of ozone number 16

07:02streak holes and this is how they work from the ground it can look like a piece of the cloud

08:35red some people have said that the river is one of the most beautiful places on earth and that the

11:38methane bubbles many lakes around the world have frozen methane bubbles one of the most famous is lake

11:45abraham in alberta canada under the ice on the lake surface frozen bubbles form where methane is trapped

11:51this happens when dead plants on the lake bed give off methane gas this gas makes bubbles which get

11:57trapped in the ice just below the surface as the lake starts to freeze bubbles of highly flammable

12:02methane that freeze in frozen lakes are a strange and beautiful natural occurrence but they can be

12:08dangerous if you pop them they can also make the environment worse methane bubbles are a strange sight

12:13because they seem to hang in midair below the frozen surface of lakes in the summer when the bubbles

12:18reach the surface they just pop and go up into the air but when the lake is frozen in the

12:22winter the

12:23bubbles can't get to the surface but as pretty as they are the frozen methane bubbles are a sign that

12:28the environment is about to get worse as temperatures rise around the world more permafrost is melting which

12:34lets frozen organic matter melt and gives bacteria more food hey bacteria gotta live too baby you know
