00:09We'll be back.
00:33Take one.
00:34Here we go.
01:24Here we go.
02:29It's a festival of football and a celebration of the world's diverse cultures coming together for one goal.
02:35There is truly nothing like a FIFA World Cup.
02:39And welcome to the SBS studio, your gateway for the world game for the next month.
02:45I'm your host for this opening match, Claudio Fabiano, joined by former Matildas Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain shot stopper
02:51Lydia Williams.
02:52And former Ghana, Barcelona and AC Milan star Kevin Prince-Boateng.
02:56Guys, it's finally here. Lydia, how exciting.
02:58Oh, I'm so excited to start this World Cup off. And what an opening match that we have here today.
03:04Oh, it's beautiful. It feels so poetic to go to Estadio Azteca.
03:07Kevin, you've experienced World Cups as a player. Of course, this is your first one now in Australia.
03:11You had to wake up quite early this morning. This is what we do all the time. Are you excited?
03:15Yeah, I'm excited. I'm used to it now to wake up so early. Claudio, we're finally here.
03:20I played two World Cups, but I have to be honest, I'm a bit nervous. I'm happy. I'm excited. I'm
03:24pumped.
03:25Yeah, we're ready, man. Let's go.
03:27What a stage. Estadio Azteca, the first place to host three FIFA World Cups.
03:33And today we'll officially have hosted more matches than any other place, which you look at the crowd flowing in.
03:38Mexican fans are so excited for this. How much does it mean for this nation, Lydia?
03:42Oh, it's going to be a wonderful game. I mean, it's the 20th game of a FIFA World Cup to
03:47be hosted in the stadium.
03:48And what better way to kick it off with Mexico, the fans coming out there.
03:53It's going to be a historic match. And I think you can just feel by the images just how electric
03:59the whole atmosphere is.
04:00It's just incredible to think it's Mexico, it's South Africa.
04:03It's 16 years to the day after they met for the opening match in 2010.
04:08Kevin, does that make it even more special?
04:10Yes, definitely. Definitely makes it more special because we go back in time.
04:13We remember 2010, that beautiful goal. Everybody remembers it.
04:16And now we go to play in Mexico. I just feel the players, I watched the training session yesterday.
04:22They were like so focused, but still happy playing in front of their people.
04:26Mexico, come on, Viva Mexico. I believe it's going to be a crazy game.
04:30You can't help but be swept up in the hype. Viva Mexico, indeed.
04:34For Australia, we don't start our campaign for another two days on Sunday afternoon at a gorgeous time for Australian
04:40audiences.
04:40We take on Turquie and this group on paper.
04:44We don't have a previous winner, Lydia, but this is a tricky first task for Tony Popovich, isn't it?
04:48Oh, definitely. It's a really hard group that they have facing them in really hard games.
04:53But I think that the current crop is so exciting for the Socceroos.
04:58Some really exciting players, young players that have gone overseas and making names for themselves.
05:02And what better way to do it on the world stage?
05:05So it's going to be a really great opening matches for them and it will set the tone in how
05:10they progress throughout the tournament.
05:12Absolutely. A great opportunity, of course, with the expanded World Cup.
05:15More teams going through than ever as well.
05:17We're all behind our green and gold.
05:19We're going to go to a super quick break now.
05:21But when we return, we've got the first opening ceremony of the tournament from Estadio Azteca.
05:26I heard a rumour Shakira might be around, so you don't want to miss this one.
05:29The opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup on the other side of this break.
05:57Welcome back to SBS's coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
06:01It's time for the opening ceremony from Estadio Azteca.
06:04So let's head down there now and kick off this party, shall we?

07:58The FIFA World Cup is a beacon of shared passion that connects nations across continents.
08:07The trophy is not defined by one player, not by one nation, but by all.
08:15Football unites us all.
08:19El fútbol nos une a todos.

14:38Made you strong
14:40Dai dai, let's go
14:44Dai dai, let's go
14:48Dai dai, let's go
15:59Still traumatized.
16:00I can see that.
16:01It is a very, very special match.
16:03Two nations separated by an Ocean United tonight by football.
16:06It could go either way.
16:07And the lineups are in.
16:08I know we want to see it.
16:10We're just over half an hour away from kickoff.
16:11So let's dive into that right now.
16:14This is how the hosts Mexico line up for their opening match.
16:18It is Raúl Rangel in goals.
16:20There is that back line.
16:21And Eric Lira is a key player for them in the middle of the park.
16:26Javier Aguirre, their manager, taking charge for a third stint of the national team.
16:30Emmanuel recognized Raúl Jiménez up front.
16:32Guillermo Ochoa at his fifth World Cup starts from the bench, but he can still have an impact in this
16:36squad, Lydia.
16:37A hundred percent.
16:37And I think that's going to be really important, especially for a friend girl.
16:40Going out there, you can have the experience of Ochoa, helping him and really just giving him tournament football advice.
16:47Absolutely.
16:48Five World Cups, something you know about Lydia Williams.
16:50One of only two Australians, male or female, to play at five World Cups.
16:54Mexico come into this tournament.
16:56I think it's maybe tricky for a host nation.
16:58You don't play as many competitive matches going into it, Kevin.
17:01But they are the Gold Cup winners.
17:02They're the Nations League winners.
17:03They're the strongest team in that part of the world, aren't they?
17:06Very interesting team.
17:07Very strong team as well.
17:08Of course, they have a lot of pressure.
17:10They have a lot of pressure playing in front of their home fans in Mexico.
17:14And they're all expecting them to go far because they always did.
17:18If you look back at the history, they always made the World Cup.
17:21They qualified.
17:22They always made the group in Mexico.
17:25The last two World Cups, they went to the quarterfinals.
17:27So people are expecting that.
17:29There is a man up top with Premier League experience.
17:32He's actually just transferred during this week from Fulham back to his former club, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
17:37Raul Jimenez, a player of that calibre that's seen it all, Lydia.
17:41Just come back from lots of adversity in his career as well.
17:44How important is he leading the line for Mexico?
17:46Definitely.
17:47I mean, all of the attack really centralises around him.
17:50He's a man that likes to be on the front line, likes to come off, back to goal and really
17:54link up play.
17:55And I think he's going to be crucial for this game and especially for Mexico to get on top of
18:00this game against South Africa.
18:0335 years of age now, Raul Jimenez.
18:05But playing as a target man, Kevin, that horrific injury five, six years ago, a skull injury.
18:10Was wearing a head brace, of course, for a long time in the Premier League after that.
18:13But he's found form in the last two seasons, double digits in goals, back to back in the Premier League.
18:19Age is just a number.
18:20He's ageing like a fine wine, isn't he?
18:22Yeah.
18:22We know scoring that many goals in the Premier League is not easy.
18:25And that just shows who he is, what he can do.
18:27And he will be a key player for them the whole tournament and off the pitch as well,
18:31because he showed what passion he has and how strong and willing he is to play football, even with that
18:37big injury.
18:38A player to look forward to and he's going to bang some goals.
18:42He absolutely will.
18:43Here's who he's in charge with stopping him.
18:45Ron Wendt-Williams, the captain between the sticks.
18:48It is a back five for South Africa.
18:50Their manager, Hugo Bruce, the Belgian, played at the Mexico 1986 World Cup.
18:55And more Premier League familiar faces with Lyle Foster leading the line.
18:59So we've got a couple of Premier League forwards on either side, Lydia.
19:02Yeah, I mean, it's going to be a really great, I guess, showing of that.
19:05And obviously their calibre to be in the Premier League and to lead this team in attacking strength for both
19:12sides.
19:12I think it's going to be a really exciting game.
19:14Obviously, you can see South Africa here getting the vibes all going, ready for it.
19:18I love this, Kevin.
19:19You told me when you were playing with Ghana at the 2010 World Cup,
19:21this was a shock to you that they arrived to games in this nature.
19:24But it's relaxing, it's free.
19:26I love it.
19:26It is, it is.
19:27It's a different culture.
19:28I came from Germany and Germany head down and focus, play the game.
19:32And then I came to the dressing room in Ghana and it's similar with the South African team.
19:36They just enjoy it.
19:37They pray, they sing and they go out and try to do the best for their countries.
19:41It's just beautiful to see.
19:43Lyle Foster is the main man up top for them and we are going to focus a lot on him.
19:48But Kevin, I wanted to mention as well, there's six Mamelodi Sundowns players that surround him.
19:52Six players that play in the local league for a team that's won 10 of the last 13 titles in
19:57South Africa.
19:57How important is that familiarity when it comes to a tournament?
20:00That's a huge plus for them because they know each other.
20:02They train together every single day.
20:04They know what kind of tactics they want to play.
20:07So that's a big thing where I think keeping the team together as tactical and keeping the number zero
20:13because it's going to be a lot of ball will be with Mexico.
20:17Let's be honest.
20:17They will try to push them.
20:19But how I said, their understanding will be there and they know each other since a long time
20:22and that can be a major factor for them.
20:25Get the ball to him in the box and he will create magic.
20:27A great career that took him through France, Portugal and Belgium before arriving in the Premier League.
20:32Well, kickoff is not too far away.
20:33Don't forget to cast your vote on the match predictor.
20:36Head to our SBS Sports socials to have your say and be part of the action.
20:41Here's what everyone's saying at the moment.
20:4286% think Mexico are going to get it done at home.
20:46But like Kevin said, a lot of pressure on home soil.
20:49We're going to go to a quick break here on SBS's coverage of the FIFA World Cup.
20:52When we come back, we'll be crossing down to the ground to Adriano del Monte at the Azteca.
20:57You don't want to miss it.
21:09It's SBS's coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
21:13It is almost here.
21:15Kickoff at the hallowed turf of the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
21:21What a place it is.
21:22We're counting down to kickoff in this opening match.
21:25The FIFA World Cup is around the corner and our man on the ground is Adriano del Monte.
21:31What a lucky job this guy has.
21:33He'll be moving all over the place.
21:34You can see the size of this tournament.
21:36Bigger than ever.
21:37The first time we have three nations.
21:38But what an occasion for the country of Mexico, Adriano.
21:45No bigger occasion than this, Claude's.
21:47And no better place on the planet to be than right here, pitch side, at the Azteca.
21:51What a privilege, what an experience it has been to immerse myself in the culture, colour, passion of this beautiful
21:58city.
21:58All the anticipation and build-up to this very, very big match at this iconic venue.
22:04A true fortress in world football.
22:06A venue that has seen giants rise, legends immortalise.
22:10As we think back to the 1970 World Cup, Pelé winning his third ever FIFA World Cup.
22:161986, Diego Maradona, his one and only World Cup triumph.
22:20And of course today, another opportunity to write another beautiful chapter in the history of this stadium.
22:27The stadium that will host a World Cup opener for a record third time in World Cup history.
22:32But the question begs, what happens to El Tri?
22:35Do they deliver so much pressure on them?
22:38Their fans have promised me an almighty party.
22:40Or will Bofana Bofana spoil the party and silence the Azteca?
22:45The stage is perfectly set.
22:47The world is watching.
22:48The 2026 FIFA World Cup has arrived.
22:53Not going to lie, a little bit of jealousy there, Adriano.
22:56What a job, what an atmosphere.
22:57It's a massive match in store.
22:59So we'll check in with the intensity radar with thanks to Rexona.
23:03It's no real surprise that with a packed house in Mexico City, the fans will play a huge role today.
23:09No doubt.
23:10And of course, Mexico have not lost a World Cup match at Estadio Azteca.
23:15Seven times they've played there in their history.
23:17Five wins and two draws.
23:19Can they do it again?
23:20We're going to go to a very quick break.
23:22When we come back, the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
23:25Stay going.
23:43Estadio Azteca, the stage is set for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
23:48What an opening match.
23:50What an occasion 16 years after they met at Johannesburg, South Africa.
23:55It is Mexico against South Africa in what is a tricky group.
23:59Lydia Williams and Kevin Prince-Boateng are alongside me.
24:02We saw the lineups already earlier.
24:04No real surprises.
24:05But you guys have both been there multiple times.
24:08This feels like a long process.
24:10The players have gone in after the warm-up.
24:12What's it like now when you're sitting there waiting, hearing all these features?
24:16There's just the jitters and the excitement.
24:20You just want to go out and play, honestly.
24:22It's a big build-up for this moment.
24:24And you just can't wait to hit the field.
24:27I don't know about it.
24:27Long process.
24:28Yeah.
24:28Long process for just going on the field and finally play.
24:31The nerves are there.
24:32You're nervous, of course.
24:33You just want the referee to finally blow the whistle.
24:36And then let's go into the game and try to win the game.
24:40Absolutely.
24:41And especially after we already saw an opening ceremony earlier, the vibes must be so high
24:45in there.
24:45The players in the dressing room.
24:47It is Estadio Azteca.
24:49It is the stadium that has the most World Cup matches ever played in it after today.
24:5420 times.
24:55And Mexico have played there seven times on home soil.
24:58They've never lost.
24:59Definitely the heavy favorites coming into this one.
25:02South Africa looking out.
25:03Looking to get off to a start where they make it out of a group for the first time in
25:07their history.
25:08What a place it is.
25:09What a scene.
25:10Adriano Del Monte was their pitch side just not long ago.
25:15Probably similar to that soccer city in Johannesburg minus the Vuvuzelas.
25:18They've been banned, Kevin.
25:19You don't have to worry about them today.
25:21Finally.
25:21No, you have no idea.
25:22When we were on the field, it was so loud that you could not hear me when I was screaming
25:26or shouting at you from here.
25:28Yeah.
25:28It was so.
25:28And then a month afterwards, I could still hear them in my house.
25:32Like I was in my kitchen trying to have a drink.
25:35And I could still hear the Vuvuzelas.
25:37Like I know, fair to the Bafana Bafana fans, it was a beautiful tournament.
25:42But the Vuvuzelas, they were annoying.
25:45Incredibly.
25:45They actually played a Legends match the other day earlier this week in Pachuca, not too far away.
25:50It was the Legends of that 2010 match.
25:53Shabalala scoring as well.
25:54Of course.
25:55I mean, just history repeating itself.
25:57And I mean, I hope he got to celebrate with a little Vuvuzela celebration there.
26:02But, yeah, really exciting.
26:05You know, who loves football?
26:06We all love football.
26:07And what better way to kick it all off by all these great showings?
26:11Absolutely.
26:12It is a massive match in store for us to kick it all off.
26:15One of 104, a reminder, coming your way with the Expanded World Cup.
26:1964 matches is what we saw in 2022.
26:21You're going to see another 40 matches over the next 39 days.
26:26That's over 550 hours of live football coming your way on SBS.
26:32Let's get some tips for the game today, shall we, while we wait for proceedings to kick off down there.
26:37I know you hate doing this, Kevin.
26:38You said something yesterday to me.
26:40Have you changed your mind?
26:41I changed my mind.
26:42I'm very bad with predictions.
26:45So I would just be Switzerland right now and say, let's see a good game.
26:49I'm going to say Mexico.
26:51It's hard not to get swept up in the hype.
26:53Let's go down to Estadio Azteca.
26:55They're now in a very familiar face to kick things off.
26:57Together to Canada and Estados Unidos, we welcome everyone to receive the flags of the 48
27:05nations clasified to the World Cup of FIFA Mexico 2026.
27:12The Mexicans are very honored that it is here that begins the first game of this wonderful
27:21tradition of football, which connects us to everyone.
27:26Let's live Mexico and let's live football.
27:41South Africa.
27:44Sudafrica.
27:46Korea Republic.
27:48Republic of Korea.
27:56Bosnia and Herzegovina.
27:58Bosnia and Herzegovina.

28:03Qatar.
28:06Switzerland.
28:08Suiza.
