During World War II, an American mission hospital is headed up by Dr. Gray Thompson (Randolph Scott) and Dr. Sara Durand (Ruth Warrick). Sara is secretly in love with Gray, but hides her feelings as his new wife, Louise (Ellen Drew), arrives at the hospital. Sparks fly, however, when Louise becomes jealous of Sara, and then tries to convince her husband to leave war-torn China behind for a calmer life in the United States. But Thompson is attached to both Sara and the people who need his help.

00:01:10THE END
00:01:20After eight long years of Japanese aggression,
00:01:23the people of the Republic of China,
00:01:26starved, choked off and isolated,
00:01:29still fight on.
00:01:30Deep in the mountains,
00:01:32into which millions of unconquered Chinese have withdrawn,
00:01:36lies the ancient city of Wanli,
00:01:38supply base and communication center
00:01:41for reckless and daring guerrilla fighters.
00:01:44A constant target for Japanese bombers,
00:01:47Wanli is rebuilt so continually
00:01:49that it is said to be a new city every seven days.
00:02:10Honorable messenger!
00:02:17Honorable messenger!
00:02:18Yes, little goat?
00:02:19Strange vision.
00:02:21Instead of bicycle carrying Honorable messenger,
00:02:23Honorable messenger carries bicycle.
00:02:26Injuring's from air raid.
00:02:28But the voice of authority is unharmed,
00:02:30lending dignity to my humble office.
00:02:32The call of a crow is more dignity than that.
00:02:35I continue on official business.
00:02:37Nature of business, Honorable messenger?
00:02:39Cablegram for Duran doctor.
00:02:41And you, chatter.
00:02:42In America,
00:02:43it is said the cablegram arrived like super fortress.
00:02:47Eeeeeeer.
00:02:58Duran doctor!
00:02:59Duran doctor!
00:03:00Shh!
00:03:01Be still, little goat.
00:03:02Be still.
00:03:03Duran doctor is occupied.
00:03:04She cannot see you now.
00:03:05Go on.
00:03:06Shh!
00:03:06Shh!
00:03:13Did you hear it?
00:03:14It's a fine man-child.
00:03:17He'll be a great harvester of rice.
00:03:19If first he must not harvest Japanese devil dwarfs,
00:03:22as my brothers do now.
00:03:23Do not worry, Sumay.
00:03:25This season of war must one day come to an end.
00:03:28Remember, Dr. Thompson is counting on us
00:03:31to mend them in spirit as well as in health.
00:03:33Thompson doctor has been in America so long,
00:03:36it seems he has forgotten us here in one league.
00:03:39Nonsense.
00:03:39I know he's been gone a long while,
00:03:41but he has many obstacles to overcome.
00:03:44He's as eager to return as we ought to have him.
00:03:46That is true.
00:03:47And he will return it only to be by your side, Duran doctor.
00:03:51Duran doctor?
00:03:52Yes, little goat.
00:03:54Honorable nurse silenced me so I could not tell you sooner.
00:03:56There's a cablegram for you.
00:03:57Thank you, little goat.
00:03:58Perhaps you would like me to read it for you.
00:04:00Never mind.
00:04:00I can read it myself.
00:04:02From Thompson doctor, I'll betcha.
00:04:15The news is bad?
00:04:17No.
00:04:18No, not at all.
00:04:19Dr. Thompson is on his way back.
00:04:21Money and supplies for the hospital.
00:04:26And a wife.
00:04:36Little goat.
00:04:38You will prepare the bungalow for Thompson doctor.
00:04:46Wife.
00:04:47Fui.
00:04:51Shenda's coming.
00:04:52Shenda's here.
00:04:54Shenda's here.
00:04:55Shenda's here.
00:04:56Shenda's here.
00:05:26Thank you very much.
00:05:58Do not touch him. Attend my wounded outside.
00:06:07Where's American doctor?
00:06:09You want to see me?
00:06:14Where's Thompson doctor?
00:06:15He's in America.
00:06:16He deserted Wan Lee?
00:06:17Nothing of the sort.
00:06:19The bombings have destroyed most of our equipment here.
00:06:21Dr. Thompson is in the States arranging for its replacement.
00:06:24He is on his way back now with things we need.
00:06:28While Dr. Thompson is away, I am in charge here.
00:06:31Woman doctor.
00:06:33You attend him.
00:06:37This man must not die.
00:06:39What's the matter with him?
00:06:40Bullet. Here.
00:06:42I put it there.
00:06:44Japanese.
00:06:45Colonel Yasuda.
00:06:47Butcher of women and children.
00:06:49Yet you want him to live?
00:06:50A soldier's death is too much honor for such as he.
00:06:54He will stand trial and answer to the Chinese people for his crimes.
00:06:57Si Mei.
00:06:58Prepare the patient for a laparotomy.
00:06:59Dr. Kim, you would be good enough to assist me.
00:07:01It would be an honor, Dr. Duran.
00:07:04He will live?
00:07:07He will.
00:07:08Unless his little brothers blow him apart from the skies.
00:07:12You will see to it that he is properly attended.
00:07:15One of my men will remain behind to guard his room.
00:07:17The people of Wanli will shun him as they would a plague.
00:07:21That one.
00:07:22Is she a husband?
00:07:23I know of none.
00:07:24She is spoken for and promised.
00:07:26And the gods will it.
00:07:28The linnet sheds its feathers.
00:07:30And the woman's promise goes with the wind.
00:07:34Dr. Kim, it will be best to keep this one away from the other patients.
00:07:38CV is placed in the north corridor.
00:07:44There was no need to smirk and simper before that, peasant.
00:07:47Do not sneer at one on whose courage our safety depends.
00:07:50I do not sneer.
00:07:51I only ask that you regard my honor.
00:07:53To remember that you are betrothed to me.
00:07:55I cannot forget.
00:07:57Only last night my father reminded me.
00:07:59Your father's wish should be sufficient.
00:08:01And have you learned the easy ways of the west from Sarah Durand?
00:08:04And have you forgotten the courtesy of the east in your manager, Dr. Sarah Durand?
00:08:08It does not please me to take orders from a woman.
00:08:11Thompson doctor left her in charge.
00:08:13Exactly.
00:08:14He placed a woman over me.
00:08:16And I myself should be in charge here.
00:08:18Giving orders to both Thompson and Durand.
00:08:25In seven days I shall return for my prisoner.
00:08:28Better make it three times seven.
00:08:29That wound was no trifling one.
00:08:31Naturally.
00:08:33Chandao.
00:08:34They say the enemy is pushing the Chinese back across the mountains.
00:08:37The regular troops, yes.
00:08:39China is trading space for time.
00:08:42But the guerrillas do not retreat.
00:08:44We shall hold a pass against the east ocean dwarfs.
00:08:46I believe you will.
00:08:49Do you fear danger for Thompson, doctor?
00:08:51Do you fear he may not get through to Wanli?
00:08:54He'll get through.
00:08:55You don't know Gray Thompson.
00:08:57In the mountains I hear much of the good work he does here.
00:09:00With Durand, doctor always by his side.
00:09:28Good morning, little girl.
00:09:29Lord, is there some festivity today that you wear your holiday clothes?
00:09:34Durand, doctor.
00:09:34I have sorrow to reside in honorable position as Thompson, doctor number one boy.
00:09:40Reside?
00:09:41Whatever for?
00:09:42Work very hard and unsuitable.
00:09:44Also have cramps in leg, which is bad for floor washing.
00:09:48Is that the only reason, little goat?
00:09:50No.
00:09:51It's true cramps is bad.
00:09:53But Thompson, doctor's wife will be much worse.
00:09:56Why do you say that?
00:09:57I'm sure Dr. Thompson has chosen a most suitable wife.
00:10:01Thompson, doctor, run hospital.
00:10:03Little goat run Thompson, doctor.
00:10:05You help Thompson, doctor, and Beliak at little goat.
00:10:08All one very happy family.
00:10:10What we want with strange woman.
00:10:13Very well, little goat.
00:10:15That's the way you feel about it.
00:10:27Little goat.
00:10:31Little goat.
00:10:34Thompson, doctor, will have great need for you.
00:10:38I ask you to stay.
00:10:41So, since you talked me into it, I stay.
00:10:46Good boy.
00:10:56Thompson, doctor, is back.
00:11:00Hello?
00:11:20I want you all to meet my wife.
00:11:22Bye-bye.
00:11:25Come on.
00:11:44Sarah!
00:11:46Sarah!
00:11:46Hi, Greg.
00:11:49Gosh, what is good to see you again.
00:11:51It's wonderful to have you back, Greg.
00:11:54You have my cable?
00:11:55Mm-hmm.
00:11:55We're so happy to hear of your success.
00:11:57I raise enough money to buy equipment for two hospitals.
00:12:00No.
00:12:00Trouble is, maybe sometime before we can send it through.
00:12:03Mary, help, tell me, Thompson, doctor.
00:12:05Mary, help.
00:12:05Little goat, little goat.
00:12:06How have you been?
00:12:07Fine, fine.
00:12:08Boy, did I miss someone like you in the States.
00:12:10Not more than I miss someone like you here in China, I'll bet you.
00:12:14Go get bags now.
00:12:18Just a minute.
00:12:19Louise!
00:12:23Come on, darling.
00:12:24I want you to meet Sarah.
00:12:25Better known around here as Durand, doctor.
00:12:27Welcome to Wondley, Mrs. Thompson.
00:12:29Grace told me so much about you, I feel like I've known you for years.
00:12:32Isn't she exactly like I told you?
00:12:34No, not at all.
00:12:35She's very attractive, which is something you forgot to mention.
00:12:39I suppose I took that for granted.
00:12:40Well, I guess there was seldom time between mastroids and appendectomies for him to notice.
00:12:45That's the truth, all right.
00:12:47I tried to make your bungalow as presentable as possible, considering the daily bombings.
00:12:51Daily bombings?
00:12:52The nips flew over only occasionally when I left.
00:12:55Well, they have airfields much nearer now.
00:12:57Wow, it's going to be much worse than I told you.
00:12:59Don't worry about me, darling.
00:13:00I'm not the least bit afraid.
00:13:02That's the girl.
00:13:02Come on in and join us for tea, Sarah.
00:13:04Oh, thank you.
00:13:04No, I must be getting back to the hospital.
00:13:06See what I mean?
00:13:07Work, work, work.
00:13:08Well, if there's anything I can do to help you get settled, I hope you'll let me know.
00:13:12I'll see you later.
00:13:13Be along in a few minutes.
00:13:16What were all those Chinese people chattering about?
00:13:19Oh, they were wishing us luck and peace and harmony and lots of babies.
00:13:25Boy babies.
00:13:26Would they be terribly disappointed if we had girl babies?
00:13:29Terribly.
00:13:29In that case, I'd be compelled to take another wife.
00:13:32Great.
00:13:36Welcome home, Mrs. Thompson.
00:13:40Woman's sake?
00:13:41Of course not.
00:13:42In America, it's good luck to carry a new wife over the doorstep.
00:13:45Good thing not Chinese custom.
00:13:46Would take a water buffalo to carry my cousin's wife.
00:13:49This is Little Goat, our houseboy.
00:13:51But don't be fooled by his youth.
00:13:52He's wise beyond his years.
00:13:54How do you do, Little Goat?
00:13:55Very fine.
00:13:56Very fine, thank you.
00:13:57Well, how do you like it?
00:13:58Oh, it's charming.
00:13:59Let's see the rest of it.
00:14:00Mm-hmm.
00:14:05Oh, darling, I know I'm going to love it here.
00:14:13It's pretty neat for a bachelor.
00:14:15Something tells me that Sarah's fine American hand was responsible for putting this room in shape.
00:14:19Really?
00:14:23Sarah's very fond of you, Gray.
00:14:26I'm very fond of her, too.
00:14:28Sarah's tops.
00:14:33Is she?
00:14:39Gray, why didn't you tell me she was beautiful?
00:14:42Beautiful?
00:14:42Of course she is.
00:14:44I thought attractive women doctors only existed in novels.
00:14:48Surely you must have noticed it sometime.
00:14:50I never thought of her that way.
00:14:52I hope you don't mind.
00:14:53I'd love you for it.
00:14:55Tea in dining room, Thompson, Doctor.
00:15:00Bring it in here, Little Goat.
00:15:11Tea in bed, good luck in America, too?
00:15:13You betcha.
00:15:14Mean something else in China?
00:15:15Just mean thirsty, that's all.
00:15:27Nice to be back.
00:15:36Su-Made.
00:15:40Welcome, Thompson, Doctor.
00:15:42How have you been?
00:15:42Very well, thank you.
00:15:44I am most happy to see you here.
00:15:46Thanks.
00:15:47You putting me to work so soon?
00:15:48We have missed you very much, Thompson, Doctor.
00:15:52Isn't Little Charlie around here someplace?
00:15:55Oh, yes.
00:15:56Little Charlie is in here.
00:16:02How for how?
00:16:03How for how?
00:16:05Why, hello, Charlie.
00:16:07How's my little pal?
00:16:09Little pal is fine, Thompson, Doctor.
00:16:11Very fine.
00:16:12Good.
00:16:13I wait a long time to show you how...
00:16:15Thompson, Doctor.
00:16:17Please to make about face until I say ready.
00:16:20Then please to make about face again and look at Charlie.
00:16:23It will give you much surprise.
00:16:24I betcha.
00:16:28All right, Charlie.
00:16:29I'll wait until you give the word.
00:16:38I'll wait until you give the word.
00:16:39In name of the United States of America and Republic of China,
00:16:43always you're welcome to home again.
00:16:45What?
00:16:46When?
00:16:47How did it happen?
00:16:48Duran Doctor told me every day, but every day I fall.
00:16:52One day I stand up and I do not fall.
00:16:55I couldn't ask for a better welcome than this.
00:16:58Well, that's all right, Charlie.
00:17:00It's enough for one day anyway.
00:17:05Well, Doc, you've done it again.
00:17:07Thank you, Thompson, Doctor.
00:17:10Tell me, Sarah.
00:17:12What do you think of Louise?
00:17:14I think she's lovely, Gray.
00:17:16Lovely.
00:17:17Were you terribly surprised when you heard I got married?
00:17:19No, not terribly.
00:17:21After all, you had to fall in love sometime.
00:17:25Of course, it was just that there'd been no inkling of it,
00:17:27so it did come as a bit of a shock.
00:17:30To all of us, I mean.
00:17:33As a matter of fact, it came as quite a surprise to me.
00:17:36I met her while I was making a plea for donations
00:17:38at one of those mink and orchid affairs.
00:17:41The moment I looked at her, I knew she was it.
00:17:44Chichiko, yeah.
00:17:45Hope he's not going to be too tough on her here.
00:17:47Well, I'll do everything I can to help her.
00:17:49Thanks, I knew you would.
00:17:52What's that soldier doing there?
00:17:55Oh, I forgot to tell you.
00:17:57We have quite an unusual patient in that room.
00:17:59A Jap.
00:18:00A Jap, yeah?
00:18:02Yes, he's Chenda's prisoner.
00:18:04Chenda, the guerrilla chief?
00:18:05That's right.
00:18:06Hmm.
00:18:16So, you are the Honorable Thompson doctor.
00:18:21How do you feel?
00:18:22I am a prisoner.
00:18:24I am a doctor, not a jailer.
00:18:26I ask you how you feel.
00:18:27You have just returned to tell me.
00:18:30What do Americans think now of Japanese warriors?
00:18:35I'll be happy to answer that when we're alone.
00:18:51I've been wondering when I hear that again.
00:18:52Doctor, you will not forget to take me to the shelter.
00:18:55Afraid of your own planes?
00:18:56Assuredly.
00:18:57They are excellent marksmen.
00:18:59Yes, they hit the hospital quite regularly.
00:19:06Oh, Dr. Kim.
00:19:14Yes, doctor.
00:19:16Look after the Japanese patient.
00:19:17If you don't mind, Dr. Thompson.
00:19:19I would rather not.
00:19:20We all feel the same about it, but I want you to take charge of it.
00:19:23As you wish, doctor.
00:19:24Doctor.
00:19:34I'd better get Louise to the shelter.
00:19:36Good comment, doctor.
00:20:20Just sit here, darling, until after the raid and you'll be all right.
00:20:23You're not going to leave me.
00:20:25I've got to.
00:20:25Sarah's all alone with the Shurda dies.
00:20:27Shurda dies?
00:20:28What's that?
00:20:28They are patients who are dying and can't be moved.
00:20:31But, Gray, I...
00:20:32There's nothing to worry about.
00:20:33All these people are your friends.
00:20:35I'll pick you up after the raid.
00:21:21Over here.
00:21:24Is she hurt?
00:21:25No, just frightened.
00:21:28Just like old times, isn't it, Sarah?
00:21:31Nothing's changed at all.
00:21:33What?

00:23:49Oh that one
00:23:51No doubt she is concerned with making a deception of her face
00:23:54I witness how she takes all manner of things and proceeds thus
00:23:59So you spy on your mistress

00:24:25She is not yet used to the bombings the way we are
00:24:27So
00:24:30Thanks for making excuses for me Sarah
00:24:32But really it isn't necessary to apologize for me to the houseboy
00:24:36Oh please I wasn't apologizing
00:24:38Well the air raids around here are taken so much for granted
00:24:42That people forget it's a new experience for you
00:24:44Once you get accustomed to it
00:24:46Oh I don't intend to get accustomed to it
00:24:49I don't understand
00:24:53I have no intention of remaining here any longer than necessary
00:24:57Longer than necessary?
00:25:00Then why did you come at all?
00:25:02It was the only way I could get Gray
00:25:04I see
00:25:08Look Louise
00:25:09I know I have no right whatsoever to interfere in your life
00:25:12Well it's nice to know that
00:25:14But you can't take Gray away from here
00:25:16You just can't
00:25:17Why not?
00:25:18Because he's a doctor
00:25:20Because Gray came out here when the Japs first attacked China
00:25:23To do everything in his power to help these defenseless people
00:25:26You mustn't take him away now when he's needed so badly
00:25:30We'd all be lost without him
00:25:31Oh
00:25:32Or just you
00:25:37What are you insinuating?
00:25:39Nothing
00:25:40Only I think you've become too accustomed to having Gray around during
00:25:45Shall we say mastoids and appendectomies
00:25:48You don't know what you're saying
00:25:50There's no need to deny it
00:25:51I've known it from the first day I met you
00:25:54And that perhaps is another reason
00:25:56Why I have no intention of permitting Gray to remain here
00:25:59Hello little goat
00:26:02Hello darling
00:26:03Hiya doc
00:26:04Hello darling
00:26:08Hey what do you got there doc?
00:26:10Oh
00:26:10Well I found this in the hospital kitchen locker
00:26:13I thought I'd bring it over before a bum got it
00:26:15Wonderful
00:26:15Now we can have a real party
00:26:17That's a good idea
00:26:18I'll see you in the morning
00:26:19Morning?
00:26:21Nonsense
00:26:21You're having dinner with us isn't you darling?
00:26:23Of course
00:26:24That's the least we can do to repay you for the wine
00:26:26Oh no please
00:26:27I don't want to intrude
00:26:28Intrude?
00:26:29My dear
00:26:30You're just like one of the family
00:26:31Of course you are
00:26:34Little goat
00:26:36Yes Thompson doctor
00:26:37Put this in the cooler
00:26:39We'll have it later
00:26:40Be better if I heat it up for you
00:26:41You dare and I'll break your neck
00:26:43We're going to have it cool
00:26:44Understand?
00:26:46Silly to drink wine cold
00:26:48Warm wine make one drunk much quicker
00:26:52Well
00:26:53America is a new country
00:26:54They will learn better as they get older
00:26:57Unusual child isn't he Sarah?
00:26:59I'll only be a moment darling
00:27:04Judging from this fear
00:27:05I am recovering rapidly
00:27:08You are?
00:27:10How soon will this
00:27:12Tandar come for me?
00:27:14Just as soon as you are well enough to be moved
00:27:18Chuto
00:27:22You understand Japanese
00:27:24Dr. Kim
00:27:35Yes we were beginning to get the jumping dinners
00:27:37To fear you wouldn't make it through to Wanli
00:27:39We almost didn't
00:27:40When we got off the plane
00:27:41We came down the river
00:27:42Just before the nipster
00:27:43I could see then
00:27:44That you've been taking a beating
00:27:45Since I left
00:27:46I'm afraid so
00:27:47But why should the Japs
00:27:48Fight so hard
00:27:49To take a little town
00:27:50Like Wanli
00:27:51It was practically a village
00:27:54Wanli
00:27:54Is a communications and supply center
00:27:56For Chenda
00:27:56The guerrilla chief
00:27:58He's their real objective
00:27:59If they could knock him out
00:28:01They'd take the pass
00:28:01In a very important hunk of China
00:28:03What's so important about it?
00:28:05Come here dear
00:28:09See that range of mountains?
00:28:11There are hundreds of caves there
00:28:13And in those caves
00:28:14The factories
00:28:15The people
00:28:16Old men
00:28:17Women and children
00:28:18Carried them there
00:28:19Piece by piece
00:28:19Across wastelands
00:28:20Rivers and mountains
00:28:22They set them up
00:28:23In those hills
00:28:23And worked there
00:28:24Night and day
00:28:24To supply China's armies
00:28:26That's what the nips are after
00:28:27And they have to get through Wanli
00:28:28To reach them
00:28:30So now you can see
00:28:31How really important we are
00:28:33I'm much more interested
00:28:34In how important we are
00:28:35To each other
00:28:42Hey we're embarrassing Sarah
00:28:44Sarah's above such things
00:28:46Yes of course
00:28:48After all I am
00:28:49Just like one of the family
00:28:51Well I hate to be
00:28:52The eat and run kind
00:28:53But I think I really
00:28:54Ought to be getting back
00:28:55Now take it easy doc
00:28:56What's the matter with you
00:28:57I never saw you so jumpy before
00:28:58Sarah's probably had a hard day
00:29:00At the hospital
00:29:01What you need
00:29:02Is a little music
00:29:02To pull you out of the dole rooms
00:29:03How about it little goat
00:29:05Coming up Thompson doctor
00:29:07Well
00:29:08Guess how
00:29:20Swell tune isn't it Sarah
00:29:21Brings a touch of the good old
00:29:22USA to Wanli
00:29:23I wonder what sort of dancing
00:29:26They're doing back home now
00:29:27Oh pretty much the same
00:29:28As always
00:29:29Come on let me show you
00:29:30Don't tell me you learned
00:29:31How to dance
00:29:32Learned how
00:29:33I always knew how
00:29:33Oh I believe you
00:29:34Go on Sarah
00:29:35Let him show off
00:29:47Oh I agree
00:29:48Really good
00:29:49Oh go on
00:29:50I bet you'd say that
00:29:51To all the doctors
00:29:52Thompson doctor
00:29:53Very fancy
00:29:54Very fancy
00:29:57You look pretty good yourself
00:29:58Why have you been
00:29:59Keeping it a secret
00:29:59Oh Sarah
00:30:00This chock full of secrets
00:30:01Is that right Sarah
00:30:03You've been holding out on us
00:30:05Hey come on
00:30:06What's the matter
00:30:06What's the matter
00:30:07No thank you Gray
00:30:08I'm really terribly tired
00:30:09I've got to run along now
00:30:10Oh you've been working too much
00:30:11That's the trouble
00:30:12Better get some rest
00:30:13I will
00:30:13Good night
00:30:14Good night
00:30:15See you in the morning
00:30:16Good night Sarah darling
00:30:17Thanks for everything
00:30:18Take care of yourself
00:30:26Never saw her act this way before
00:30:28I wonder what's eating her
00:30:28I believe I know Gray
00:30:30She's in love
00:30:31In love
00:30:32Why I'm the only white man
00:30:34She ever met out here
00:30:35Exactly
00:30:35She's in love with you
00:30:38Darling you're crazy
00:30:40Oh Gray
00:30:41You're a good doctor
00:30:42You're really a wonderful doctor
00:30:44But Sarah's symptoms
00:30:45Are more easily recognized
00:30:46By another woman
00:30:47Especially your wife
00:30:49Oh no you're wrong Louise
00:30:50You're mistaking friendship
00:30:52For love
00:30:53Darling
00:30:53Is it so incredible
00:30:55That another woman
00:30:56Could be in love with you
00:30:57But Sarah
00:30:58I've known her longer
00:30:59Than I have you
00:30:59Longer yes
00:31:00But not better
00:31:07Go get your coat
00:31:08We'll get out of here
00:31:12Little ghost
00:31:12Come on
00:31:13You can wash the dishes later
00:31:14Yes

00:31:16Hurry up Louise
00:31:24Darling
00:31:25Our lease is the house later
00:31:29Gray
00:31:31Gray
00:31:32Gray it isn't fair
00:31:32To leave me alone
00:31:33Through every air raid
00:31:34They're driving me
00:31:34Out of my mind
00:31:35Hey
00:31:36I thought you were the girl
00:31:37Who wasn't afraid
00:31:38Little goat
00:31:40Take your mistress
00:31:40To the shelter
00:31:42Hurry or otherwise
00:31:43Zeke's home
00:31:52I thought you were the girl
00:31:53I thought you were the girl
00:31:53I thought you were the girl
00:31:55I thought you were the girl
00:31:56I thought you were the girl
00:31:56I thought you were the girl
00:31:59I thought you were the girl
00:32:00I thought you were the girl
00:32:02I thought you were the girl
00:32:02I thought you were the girl
00:32:02I thought you were the girl
00:32:03I thought you were the girl
00:32:03I thought you were the girl
00:32:07I thought you were the girl
00:32:07I thought you were the girl
00:32:30Like Thompson's doctor say, there's nothing to be afraid of.
00:32:46Pardon me, Mrs. Thompson, but you're safe here.
00:32:49Who are you?
00:32:50Allow me to introduce myself, Dr. Kim.
00:32:52I'm assisting Dr. Thompson as house surgeon.
00:32:54I'm so glad you're here.
00:32:56These people, the bombings, those soldiers with the guns.
00:32:59But these people will not hurt you.
00:33:01Those soldiers are guarding the ammunition store.
00:33:04You mean this cave is a narcy?
00:33:06Yes.
00:33:07This is a supply source for gendarmeries guerrillas.
00:33:20Got it.
00:33:24How many more, Sarah?
00:33:27Don't ask, Gray.
00:33:29If they'd only learn to get to the shelter sooner, we wouldn't have so many casualties.
00:33:32It's always such needless slaughter when they kill people who can't fight back.
00:33:38All right.
00:33:39All right.
00:33:49Gray?
00:33:53Gray?
00:33:57Gray?
00:33:58Gray?
00:34:01Gray?
00:34:01Gray?
00:34:02Gray?
00:34:08Gray?
00:34:10Gray?
00:34:13Gray?
00:34:29How many did we work on today, Sarah?
00:34:31I don't remember. I lost count.
00:34:34Thanks.
00:34:35I could sleep for a week.
00:34:38Aren't you going to have some tea, Sue May?
00:34:40Thank you, no.
00:34:41I wish only to sleep.
00:34:44I can understand that.
00:34:45Good night.
00:34:46Good night.
00:34:47Good night. Thank you, Sue May.
00:34:53That was pretty nice work in there, Dr. Thompson.
00:34:57Always makes me feel like such a smart guy when I lick the old man with the side.
00:35:01You are a smart guy.
00:35:02Thanks.
00:35:03I'm a smart gal, too.
00:35:05Of course you are.
00:35:06Otherwise, you would know I'm a smart guy.
00:35:12Sarah, I'm worried about Louie.
00:35:14It's more worried than I care to admit.
00:35:17The bombings?
00:35:18She doesn't seem to be able to stand up to them.
00:35:20Well, as I remember it, I was quite panicky myself when they first started.
00:35:26Oh, I'm sure she'll get over that feeling.
00:35:28Be patient with her, Gray.
00:35:31After all, it's much more difficult for her than it ever was for us.
00:35:34Yes, that's so.
00:35:35It's a pretty tough adjustment for a girl to make this.
00:35:38So, this is the sort of work that keeps you at the hospital.
00:35:41The first day I got here, I've been practically deserted
00:35:44while you've devoted most of your time to your precious Sarah.
00:35:47Don't start imagining things.
00:35:48Start I started long ago, and why not?
00:35:50I spent half of my time being shoved about by filthy natives in a rat hole of a cave
00:35:54while you stay here and have tea parties with Sarah.
00:35:57If you wanted to be with her so much, why didn't you marry her instead of me?
00:36:00Do you deny you're in love with Gray?
00:36:01Go ahead, deny it if you can.
00:36:04I knew it.
00:36:05You had enough.
00:36:06What about me?
00:36:07I gave up everything to be here with you.
00:36:09To live in this crawling, stinking town,
00:36:11not knowing whether each day would be my last.
00:36:13And you say you've had enough.
00:36:15Well, I don't mind telling you I've had more than enough.
00:36:29I'm sorry, Sarah.
00:36:33It's all right.
00:36:33It doesn't matter.
00:36:35You better go to her, Gray.
00:36:41I wish she hadn't said that to you.
00:36:43Let's pretend she didn't.
00:36:47Okay, Doc.
00:36:55Good night, Dr. Thompson.
00:36:56Good night, Dr. Kim.
00:37:10You will stay, please.
00:37:14There are others to be looked after.
00:37:15Nevertheless, you will remain until I give you permission to leave.
00:37:18You are not yet in charge here, Dr. Kim.
00:37:23It appears that your betrothed has taken on the offensive manners of the foreign women.
00:37:29It is the influence of Dr. Duran that has made her self-willed and arrogant.
00:37:32Traits to be found in all foreign women.
00:37:34I have seen them in Shanghai, soft and pampered.
00:37:39But of this you would not know.
00:37:41How would I not know?
00:37:42Well, I studied in their country.
00:37:44I have said before, we have much in common.
00:37:48You are not Chinese.
00:37:52I am Korean.
00:37:53You may deceive the stupid people here.
00:37:55Me, you cannot deceive.
00:37:57My mother is Korean.
00:37:59And your father?
00:38:00My father is dead.
00:38:01But he lived to give you life.
00:38:03And he was a Japanese.
00:38:04I am known as a Korean, and that's how I wish it to be.
00:38:09I congratulate you on being so nearly well, Colonel Yasuda.
00:38:13Well enough to be given back to my capto when he comes?
00:38:16Well enough.
00:38:17Dr. Kim, it is of the greatest importance that I be able to remain here for a time.
00:38:22It is not that I am concerned with my life.
00:38:25But there are things to be done before I die.
00:38:28I will do nothing to keep you here.
00:38:31That is to be regretted.
00:38:33Yesterday, the nurse Ling Su Mei and the other Ho Ching brought me food.
00:38:37They talked together in Chinese, not knowing I would understand them.
00:38:42They spoke of the peasant soldier, Chanda, the eagle,
00:38:46and how he repulsed our latest attack at the pass.
00:38:50They spoke of him with love and affection,
00:38:53as one would of a god.
00:38:55Return me to Chanda,
00:38:57and my death will but add new glory to his name.
00:39:03and my death.
00:39:30and my death will not be mine.
00:39:33He was a good and evil guy!
00:39:36I do not hear him.
00:39:40Nurse Lin Sumay.
00:39:42Shh.
00:39:44Nurse Lin Sumay.
00:39:46You call as one in great pain.
00:39:48To be ignored is always painful to me.
00:39:51These I brought you from the mountains.
00:39:54It is not fitting.
00:39:56It is entirely fitting.
00:39:57Because of my regard and because you are worthy.
00:40:02I am deeply grateful.
00:40:04They are beautiful.
00:40:06But they have now met more than their equal.
00:40:09Nurse, do you help?
00:40:11Welcome to Anli, Chandar.
00:40:13Thompson, Doctor.
00:40:14I am honored by this visit.
00:40:15The honor is mine.
00:40:16I look forward to this.
00:40:18Won't you join me in my office?
00:40:19Pleasure.
00:40:20Excuse us, Sue.
00:40:33Sumay, throw those flowers away.
00:40:35I will not.
00:40:37I forbid you to keep them.
00:40:39You cannot forbid me.
00:40:41I am not yet your wife.
00:41:01What does this you do?
00:41:04It came to my mind that one man may be cured too quickly.
00:41:08And thereby another may be made ill.
00:41:11Too much glory.
00:41:13Is there any danger?
00:41:16None.
00:41:24He will appear as one on the verge of death.
00:41:26But he will pass.
00:41:34I understand the chaps have moved forward to the river.
00:41:37Yes, they spread over the land like the devil's spawn.
00:41:39But this past the one, Lee, we hold.
00:41:42And shall hold.
00:41:44We have learned that among the East Ocean dwarfs, the good are of two kinds.
00:41:48The dead and the unborn.
00:41:50My people have now learned that too.
00:41:53Thompson, Doctor.
00:41:54I came to ask your aid for my men.
00:41:55In the mountains are many of my wounded who cannot be brought to you for healing.
00:41:59You want me to go to them?
00:42:00Is that it?
00:42:00If it is possible.
00:42:02It will be made possible.
00:42:03The way is far and the wounded are many.
00:42:05There will be much to do.
00:42:06I shall bring others to help.
00:42:08You are a true friend to my people.
00:42:11Well, now I claim my prisoner.
00:42:20Oh, Dr. Kim.
00:42:22Have the Japanese patient made ready to travel.
00:42:24I am afraid that is impossible, Doctor.
00:42:26Impossible.
00:42:27Why?
00:42:28I was about to inform you that he has suffered a relapse.
00:42:31Relapse?
00:42:47When I left here earlier, he was normal, as the chart shows.
00:42:50Had he access to any depressants?
00:42:52No drugs are kept here.
00:42:59The heartbeat is weak and rapid.
00:43:01Temperature is subnormal.
00:43:03Stimulants and heat.
00:43:04Keep him under the closest observation.
00:43:05Yes, Doctor.
00:43:06Must be some internal complication.
00:43:17It's strange, but I'll find the cause of it.
00:43:19Will it take much time for him to recover?
00:43:21I don't know, but I hope not.
00:43:23The doctor in there, he is to be trusted?
00:43:25Of course.
00:43:26He was trained in my country.
00:43:27It has been here since the hospital opened.
00:43:29You will not forget my wounded?
00:43:30I won't forget.
00:43:31I'll start making preparations immediately.
00:43:34And I shall look forward to seeing you again soon.
00:43:36Soba!
00:43:37Hit!
00:43:45May Hananim forgive me what I have done.
00:43:53Where is your mistress, little goat?
00:43:55Thompson, lady, celebrate American holiday.
00:43:57Holiday?
00:43:58What holiday?
00:43:59Who knows, but it must be holiday.
00:44:01Or why should she take bath in middle of day?
00:44:04It's an old American custom.
00:44:06America has strange customs.
00:44:08Little goats say bath in middle of day mean holiday.
00:44:11After 4,000 years of civilization,
00:44:14you'd imagine the Chinese would have invented a bathtub.
00:44:16They haven't found out yet
00:44:17that a bathtub's a place to curl up with a good book.
00:44:24Where are you going?
00:44:26I'm going on a trip.
00:44:27Be gone overnight.
00:44:28What did you say?
00:44:29I said I'd be away tonight.
00:44:31I've got to go up to the hills
00:44:32to take care of some of Chendar's casualties.
00:44:35Going up alone?
00:44:37No, there are lots of wounded.
00:44:39I'll need help.
00:44:40I see.
00:44:49Who's going with you?
00:44:50Sumay and Sarah.
00:44:53Just who do you think you're fooling?
00:44:56Fooling?
00:44:57I've told you the truth, Louise.
00:44:59The truth is it's a good opportunity
00:45:00for you to be alone with Sarah
00:45:02and not have to worry about me.
00:45:03Why don't you admit it?
00:45:05That's not so and you know it.
00:45:06I know nothing of the sort.
00:45:08All I know is that every time I turn around,
00:45:10you and Sarah are together.
00:45:11And now you're going away with her overnight.
00:45:15What's the matter?
00:45:17Have I slandered your precious Sarah?
00:45:24I'm counting on you, Dr. Kim.
00:45:26While we're away, you'll be in full charge.
00:45:28Thank you, Doctor.
00:45:29I shall do my miserable best.
00:45:33Keep a sharp eye on the Jap.
00:45:35Let's go.
00:45:38Let's go.
00:45:39There, we'll be back.
00:46:11You pray?
00:46:15While still in this world,
00:46:18it's best to prepare oneself for the next.
00:46:21That is wise.
00:46:22But you will not die.
00:46:25It does not matter.
00:46:27Flowers and men do not last forever.
00:46:30The wounds will heal.
00:46:32Only the scars will remain as a memory.
00:47:00The wounds will remain as a memory.
00:47:10Who else?
00:47:12Three men.
00:47:13Men?
00:47:17Inche!
00:47:19The doctor comes. Make things ready.
00:47:27He brought no one else.
00:47:29One more. Nurse Ling Su Mei.
00:47:31Ling Su Mei?
00:47:33Miss Su Mei!
00:47:36Oh, my hair.
00:47:38Oh, my hair.
00:47:40You. Get me uniform.
00:47:41Blue one.
00:47:42And a clean shirt.
00:47:44You. You.
00:47:45Don't clean my shoes.
00:47:46Eh?
00:47:47Oh.
00:47:48Oh, I must have water.
00:47:49Much water.
00:47:50Go on.
00:47:50Hot water.
00:47:51I'm a spade.
00:47:52Oh.
00:48:05Welcome, my friends.
00:48:11You come sooner than I hope, Thompson, Doctor.
00:48:13I know that to one in pain, each moment is like a day.
00:48:17Delighted you could come, Durant Doctor.
00:48:18Thank you, Tendop.
00:48:20The wounded are in there.
00:48:21Bring everything inside.
00:48:25Welcome, Lin Su Mei.
00:48:27I am overwhelmed by this visit.
00:48:30I did not come to see you.
00:48:31I came to attend the wounded.
00:48:33Oh, that too.
00:48:34But not that alone.
00:48:35You speak boldly.
00:48:37Because I am bold, I win battles.
00:48:39I am no battle.
00:48:41Did I say so?
00:48:42Did I say I prepared to win you?
00:48:47All right, Su Mei.
00:48:48Prepare the next one.
00:48:49There are no more Thompson, Doctor.
00:48:51He is the last of the seriously wounded.
00:48:53Now I insist you stop for something to eat and drink.
00:48:56The rest can wait.
00:48:57I will finish.
00:48:59Thank you, Su Mei.
00:49:11Wait.
00:49:12Not your leg.
00:49:17Thompson, Doctor.
00:49:18Durant, Doctor.
00:49:20If only there was some way I could repay you for what you are doing.
00:49:24Your gratitude and that of your men is more than enough.
00:49:32You, Jala.
00:49:34One, Lee.
00:49:35Devil, dwarfs dropping death.
00:50:02Doing it like this makes it much more terrifying.
00:50:27For what you have done, I thank you, my brother.
00:50:32I have asked you to regard me as I regard myself.
00:50:35A Korean.
00:50:38My mother's blood rules in me.
00:50:40And yet, I wonder how nursling Su Mei and her father would regard you.
00:50:47If by accident, they should learn of your Japanese heritage.
00:50:53You propose to tell?
00:50:54Do not be alarmed.
00:50:57Only if you should fail in your duty to your father's ancestors, might I forget to guard my tongue.
00:51:04What do you ask of me?
00:51:05A little thing.
00:51:07I wish to send a message.
00:51:09It is impossible.
00:51:11All outgoing messages are strictly censored by the authorities.
00:51:14You are mistaken.
00:51:16There is one whose good faith would not be questioned.
00:51:20Dr. Thompson.
00:51:22Dr. Thompson?
00:51:29In the person of his charming wife, of course.
00:51:38Would she not be happy to have a plane come to take her and her husband away?
00:51:47What has this to do with you?
00:51:49In a plane, there are many places where one may be safely hidden.
00:51:57They will not know it.
00:52:00But they will help me to escape.
00:52:11I wonder what the old monks who built this monastery would say to all this.
00:52:16The wounded men, the guns, destruction.
00:52:22They would say this too will pass.
00:52:25Though you are a woman, there is certain wisdom.
00:52:30And therefore, I have one thing to ask you.
00:52:34Ask it then.
00:52:36When a man's land is thick with battle,
00:52:38and he is in the thickest of it all his waking hours,
00:52:42is it fitting you think of marriage?
00:52:47It is fitting.
00:52:49Since in war as in peace,
00:52:51the gods watch over love,
00:52:54as they do over life and death.
00:52:56Then I invite you to become my wife.
00:53:03You forget I am promised to Kim, doctor.
00:53:07I remember your lips made a promise.
00:53:10What of your heart?
00:53:13It is true.
00:53:15My heart turns elsewhere.
00:53:17It is written.
00:53:19One whose heart is not content
00:53:21will never know happiness.
00:53:30Sorry if I have kept you waiting, Gray.
00:53:32That last patient was telling me some wonderful stories about this old place.
00:53:36Mountains do make you feel small and insignificant.
00:53:40They are so huge and overwhelming.
00:53:45What's the matter?
00:53:48Do I look odd or something?
00:53:50Quite the contrary.
00:53:52As a matter of fact, I was just thinking how lovely you look.
00:53:57But don't tell Durand, doctor, I said that.
00:54:01I was just wishing that I might.
00:54:03I think it would please her.
00:54:05Be the first compliment you ever paid her.
00:54:08Outside of her professional ability.
00:54:11You didn't hold out much hope for her when she first arrived.
00:54:16I must have made things pretty miserable for you, Sarah.
00:54:21I've loved every moment of it.
00:54:38Darling, hold me.
00:54:40Don't let me think.
00:54:42Oh, I've waited for so long.
00:54:44I've watched your hands while you worked.
00:54:46I wanted to touch them.
00:54:48I loved your voice when you called me down.
00:54:51Gray, why did we have to wait until it was too late?
00:54:56Don't be sorry, darling.
00:54:57I'm not.
00:54:58I won't ever be.
00:55:01You've given me happiness.
00:55:03I can make that enough.
00:55:08We still have our work.
00:55:11Nothing must ever spoil that, Gray.
00:55:13Nothing ever will.
00:55:17Good night.
00:55:19Good night.
00:55:21Doc.
00:55:22Doc.
00:55:41Good morning, Mrs. Townsend.
00:55:43Good morning, Dr. Kim.
00:55:45If I may take the liberty of saying so.
00:55:47Life here in Wan Li must be most unbearable for you who are not accustomed to it.
00:55:51You're very kind.
00:55:53Surely your husband is aware of this.
00:55:54He said it isn't possible to leave here now.
00:55:57The way has been blocked by Japanese troops.
00:55:59That is true.
00:56:00And yet if one is determined enough, a way could be found.
00:56:04Dr. Kim, I'd give anything to get out of Wan Li.
00:56:06You will treat as confidential what I have to say?
00:56:09Of course.
00:56:10Then I myself might be able to arrange for your departure.
00:56:13You?
00:56:14Although one considers me but an insignificant doctor, I am not without friends of great influence in the city of
00:56:20Land Cow.
00:56:21Through them, a plane might be sent to take you home.
00:56:23But why should you be so concerned?
00:56:25Surely my welfare can't mean as much to you as all that.
00:56:28I will speak frankly.
00:56:30I do not enjoy being a subordinate.
00:56:32If Dr. Thompson leaves with you, Dr. Durand will lose her authority and I will be in charge here.
00:56:38I see.
00:56:40In order to accomplish this, I must have some cooperation on your part.
00:56:43I will give you a message in code which you will send to my friend in Land Cow.
00:56:47Why can't you send it?
00:56:48I would be questioned.
00:56:50Only military messages may be sent.
00:56:52But the telegrapher would not hesitate to accommodate you.
00:56:54I'm afraid that won't help me.
00:56:56My husband said that even if there were a way out, his duties here would prevent him from leaving.
00:57:02A clever and attractive woman can always convince her husband that his greatest duty is to her.
00:57:18Chung!
00:57:20See what I have!
00:57:22Thompson doctor brought it for me for the mountains.
00:57:24Richard, one of Chen Da's men gave it to him.
00:57:27That is good.
00:57:28It means that there is one less devil dwarf to pollute the earth.
00:57:31It is true.
00:57:33Sue May, may I speak with you?
00:57:40Why is it you have not been near me since your visit to the peasant, chief?
00:57:44I have had much to do.
00:57:45So much that you have not even had time to greet me?
00:57:47You too have been occupied.
00:57:49You are never from the side of the butcher.
00:57:51I guard his health for your guerrilla chief.
00:57:54But I am never too occupied that I would not stop to speak to you.
00:58:02You will excuse me.
00:58:03Sue May.
00:58:04I must see Duran doctor.
00:58:08Thompson doctor's wife is waiting for him in the office.
00:58:11Thank you, Sue May.
00:58:16Hello, Louise.
00:58:18Gray's in surgery.
00:58:19I'm afraid he'll be busy a few more minutes.
00:58:21Well, I guess there's nothing to do but wait.
00:58:25Why haven't you been around lately, Sarah?
00:58:27We've missed you.
00:58:30Well, there's been lots to do here.
00:58:32Evidently.
00:58:33I noticed that Gray's been spending more and more time here, too.
00:58:38As a doctor, I'm afraid it's only natural that he should devote most of his time to his work.
00:58:43But is it his work that keeps him here?
00:58:47Well, I don't know.
00:58:50But if it isn't, and if I were his wife, I'd do something about it.
00:58:54For instance, well, I'd try to understand what he's attempting to do out here, to appreciate his work.
00:59:02I'd try to see things his way and encourage him.
00:59:06And sure, I'd try to make him happy.
00:59:08He isn't happy now.
00:59:10Maybe you're just imagining that because you're the one who isn't happy.
00:59:13I wasn't thinking of myself.
00:59:14How noble of you are.
00:59:16Now, suppose you listen to me for a change.
00:59:19You're never going to get Gray.
00:59:20You had your chance before he married me.
00:59:22But I've got him now, and I'm going to hold on to him.
00:59:25Louise, I've no intention of trying to take Gray away from you.
00:59:29You won't believe that.
00:59:30Why should I?
00:59:31You'd do anything to get him.
00:59:32You know you would.
00:59:33But yours is such an antiseptic charm.
00:59:36How Gray could ever have fallen in love with anybody like you.
00:59:40You're jealous of me.
00:59:41Jealous of my life with Gray.
00:59:42Well, let me tell you something.
00:59:44Gray brought me here, and he's going to take me back no matter what you try to do.
00:59:58Dr. Kim.
01:00:00Mrs. Thompson, this is indeed a pleasant surprise.
01:00:04Moi Ming.
01:00:05I would like to see that rare basket you spoke of.
01:00:07Your pleasure.
01:00:10Dr. Kim, I've decided to send that message to Lankow.
01:00:14Hoping you would come to this decision, I took the liberty of composing the message for you.
01:00:21It's signed with Dr. Thompson's name.
01:00:23Merely to ensure acceptance of the telegraph office.
01:00:27Regret to inform you that Lee Shenzhen has been critically injured in air raid on Wan Li.
01:00:34What does it really say?
01:00:35A request for a plane as soon as possible.
01:00:38When will this plane arrive?
01:00:39I will let you know in plenty of time.
01:00:41Until I do so, it will be best you say nothing to your husband of our extremely pleasant conversation.
01:01:20They passed us.
01:01:22They passed us.
01:01:23They passed us.
01:01:25Now I am certain my message has been received.
01:01:30They did not bomb one leap because they know I am here.
01:01:50Are they not beautiful?
01:01:54I see no beauty in them.
01:01:56Only a relief that we are not being bombed anymore.
01:01:58For thus the people of Wanli owe me a debt of gratitude.
01:02:16Well, did they all go to the shelter or not?
01:02:19It made such a fuss last time.
01:02:21I think we can take a chance and not move.
01:02:39They passed us.
01:02:42I don't know whether to be glad or sorry.
01:02:44Who would ever have thought that peace could be so menacing?
01:02:48It's like the last meal they bring to the condemned man.
01:02:54If one sees with the mind and not with the eyes, this is the finest snow in the world.
01:02:58Merry Christmas, darling.
01:03:00Merry Christmas, Louise.
01:03:01Merry Christmas to everybody.
01:03:03And little goat, too.
01:03:10A kiss like that is almost grounds for divorce.
01:03:13What's the matter with you?
01:03:14Oh, nothing.
01:03:15Nothing.
01:03:15What makes you think anything's the matter?
01:03:17Ever since you came back from your trip to Chendag, you've been miles away from me.
01:03:21Haven't I been a different person since the bombing stopped?
01:03:24Haven't I been more like the Louise you first met and fell in love with?
01:03:27Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
01:03:32Oh, what fun is to ride one-horse open sleigh.
01:03:38Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
01:03:42Oh, what fun is to ride one-horse open sleigh.
01:03:47Why all this?
01:03:49It's the city magistrate paying his respects to us.
01:03:52O'er the hills we go, laughing all the way.
01:03:56Bells on bombs they'll ring, making spirits cry.
01:04:01Oh, what fun to ride a single sleighing song tonight.
01:04:06Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
01:04:10Oh, what fun it is to ride one-horse open sleigh.
01:04:14Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
01:04:19Oh, what fun it is to ride one-horse open sleigh.
01:04:26Back home, it's still the day before Christmas.
01:04:29And I've been thinking of, oh, silly things like,
01:04:34like the store windows and last-minute shopping and the cold air and furs around my face.
01:04:40You do miss New York, don't you?
01:04:42Can you blame me, Gray?
01:04:44Can you really blame me?
01:04:47No, I can't say that I do.
01:04:50I realize now there's a mistake to bring you here.
01:04:52Then why don't we go home where we belong?
01:04:55I've told you, Louise, there's no way out now.
01:04:57Oh, but suppose there were.
01:04:59Suppose a way could be found.
01:05:00Would you go?
01:05:01There's no use talking about it.
01:05:03It's impossible to leave now.
01:05:05Oh, it's impossible now, but it won't be long before we'll be able to get out.
01:05:08But I'm sure of it.
01:05:11Sure of it?
01:05:12How can you possibly be sure of it?
01:05:13Oh, I mean, I...
01:05:16I just took it for granted we won't be locked in Wanli forever.
01:05:19Well, aren't you the least bit concerned about my work here?
01:05:21Oh, for heaven's sake, Gray, that's all I've heard since coming here.
01:05:25Your work, your work.
01:05:26As if nothing else mattered.
01:05:27What about me?
01:05:28Don't I count?
01:05:29Doesn't my happiness mean anything to you?
01:05:32After all, I am your wife.
01:05:52All right, Louise, as soon as it's possible, I'll take you home.
01:05:58Oh, darling.
01:06:00Darling, darling, that's all I wanted to hear you say.
01:06:13Good morning, Sarah.
01:06:14Good morning.
01:06:19Well, aren't you going to wish me a Merry Christmas?
01:06:23Oh, of course.
01:06:26Merry Christmas, darling.
01:06:27Thanks.
01:06:28You're just in time to help me distribute the presents.
01:06:31The children are wild with excitement.
01:06:32Sarah.
01:06:33Yes?
01:06:34Louise and I, we're going back to the States as soon as possible.
01:06:39In other words, you're running away.
01:06:42If you want to put it that way.
01:06:45Gray, you started this hospital.
01:06:47You saw it take form and shape.
01:06:49You watched it bring hope and comfort to everyone here.
01:06:53How can you possibly desert it at a time like this?
01:06:56Gray, you can't do it.
01:06:58No matter how you feel, your work is the only thing you can consider now.
01:07:02I know you think you're doing the only honorable thing, but it's wrong, Gray.
01:07:06We don't count.
01:07:07Not you or me or Louise.
01:07:09I love you.
01:07:11And I know I can never have you.
01:07:13But don't let our love destroy everything our work together has created.
01:07:20Nothing can ever destroy that.
01:07:24All right, Gray.
01:07:29Duran, doctor?
01:07:31Thompson, doctor?
01:07:32Maybe I have something important to tell you.
01:07:34I do not like to be tell, Tatler.
01:07:36But one day I see Kim, doctor.
01:07:40And Thompson, lady, on the street.
01:07:43They talk so.
01:07:44Psst, psst, psst, psst, psst, psst, psst, psst.
01:07:46You mean they were whispering?
01:07:47Then I see Kim, doctor, give her a paper.
01:07:50And Thompson, lady, go in the wireless office.
01:07:52This happened on one day.
01:07:54And on the next day, the bombing stopped.
01:07:56I can't understand it.
01:07:58Why should Dr. Kim want to help the Japs?
01:08:00The Koreans have done everything possible to defeat the Japs.
01:08:03Ask Mrs. Thompson to come here right away.
01:08:05Yes, Thompson, doctor.
01:08:24Sir, where did you get that gun?
01:08:26Since you have refused to supply me with arms,
01:08:29I was forced to borrow it from one of the guards in the shelter.
01:08:32Though he may not have discovered his losses yet.
01:08:39Just why did you have my wife send a telegram for you?
01:08:42For me?
01:08:43What are you planning?
01:08:45I'm afraid I do not understand.
01:08:47You are lying.
01:08:48The bombing stopped the day after the telegram was sent.
01:08:50I assure you, Dr. Thompson,
01:08:52that is purely a coincidence.
01:08:55But since you are so well informed,
01:08:57your wife did send a telegram for a plane.
01:09:01You see, Mrs. Thompson was most anxious to leave here.
01:09:04With you, of course.
01:09:08And your suit of plans to leave on the same plane, is that it?
01:09:10You know what will happen when Chenda hears of this?
01:09:13May I remind you that it was your wife who sent the telegram?
01:09:25There is the plane, Dr. Thompson.
01:09:27You must make up your mind quickly whether to please your wife or not.
01:09:35Paratroops.
01:09:37Jab paratroops.
01:09:39That is what your message brought, Dr. Kim.
01:09:52You lied.
01:09:54That plane was not for your escape.
01:09:56Not for the Thompson's.
01:09:57This treachery I will not share.
01:09:59Fool, you shared that when you revealed Chenda's ammunition supply source.
01:10:03Now I shall lead my men there,
01:10:04and they will destroy it to the last shell.
01:10:13Thompson, Doctor.
01:10:14Look after Dr. Kim.
01:10:17Liang, get all the men together,
01:10:18have them go after the guns,
01:10:19and tell them I'll meet them at the shelter.
01:10:21Better let me take care of that first, Gray.
01:10:23Come on.
01:10:24It's all right, Sarah.
01:10:26Gray.
01:10:27Gray, I'm frightened.
01:10:29So am I for what you've done.
01:10:31Look in that room, and that's only the beginning.
01:10:34Come on.
01:10:44I wish I could help you.
01:10:48It is better so.
01:10:51I wish I could help you.
01:11:10It is better so.
01:11:20Jack, mount your gun over here.
01:11:25Listen, men.
01:11:27If the devil dwarves succeed in blowing up the ammunition in the shelter,
01:11:31Chenda and his men will have nothing with which to fight.
01:11:33We must stop them.
01:11:35Liang, go to the telegraph office, send messages for help.
01:11:39The rest of us will dig in here.
01:11:42And we will get to the vehicle.
01:11:48Let's do it.
01:11:50Yes, sir.
01:11:51Hey, my son.

01:16:34You promised to wait for me until I came back.
01:16:36Please, little goat, tell me how you saved Juan Lee.
01:16:39Well, little plum blossom, I was chosen by the gods to be a man of destiny.
01:16:43And while all you kids hid safely in the caves, I fearlessly met a ruthless enemy and defeated him in
01:16:48mortal combat mid shot and shell and deadly machine gun fire.
01:16:55When the devil dwarfs come no more, and peace is in the land, I shall return them to my...
01:17:02I shall be waiting.
