The services of the brilliant detective Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) are required again when an espionage ring attempts to steal secret plans from the U.S. government. After one of the spies is killed by a colleague, the murderer makes off in a car stolen from radio star Diane Hall (Helen Devereaux), but Chan soon discovers that this isn't just a coincidence. Something strange is going on at the Cosmo Radio Center, and Chan is just the man to find out what it is.

00:02:48You stay here. I'm going to telephone.
00:02:50Right.
00:03:15Chan. Gee, I'm mighty glad to see you again, Charlie.
00:03:19Captain Flynn, most happy to meet old friend.
00:03:23You work fast as usual. I'm in town only an hour, and yet already you have telephoned me.
00:03:29Boy, the minute I got your telegram, I started watching all trains.
00:03:32Did you contact Mysterious Mr. Roush?
00:03:35Sure. Picked him up the minute he got off the train.
00:03:37And Hodge, that's one of my men over there.
00:03:39He and I have trailed him for seven hours.
00:03:43Roush know you follow him?
00:03:44He couldn't help it. I figured you were about to make an important arrest, so we've kept close to him.
00:03:49He's on that tug over there, man.
00:03:53I did not want to arrest him yet.
00:03:57You? You didn't?
00:04:00Roush's agent, in pay of someone trying to steal radar secrets from our government.
00:04:06Really wanted you to locate him so I could observe him myself.
00:04:10Oh, so you could trail him to the head of the gang who's trying to steal the radar, eh?
00:04:15Oh, gee, I'm awful sorry, Charlie.
00:04:19Oh, no matter, no matter.
00:04:22Perhaps we arrest him anyhow.
00:04:25Then we put him someplace where you not be sorry anymore.
00:04:30Oh, thanks.
00:04:38Roush, use this car.
00:04:40Oh, no. No, that was parked when we got here.
00:04:47He's still on the boat.
00:04:48All right, let's go.
00:04:50Oh, no.
00:05:18All right, let's go.
00:05:25Oh, there's no one in there.
00:05:40Blood on the floor.
00:05:55It's Roush.
00:06:02It's Roush.
00:06:06He's dead.
00:06:07Stabbed within the last 20 minutes.
00:06:14Here, Prince.
00:06:15Someone stepping blood, leave Prince.
00:06:31I'm afraid, Captain.
00:06:34Murderer, arrive and depart in car on dock, which just leaves.
00:06:39And I didn't even look at the license plate.
00:06:43I look.
00:06:49Get me in the car on the car on the car on the car.
00:06:52This is Flynn talking.
00:06:54We just brought in the homicide.

00:06:57Thanks.
00:06:58Sit down, Charlie.
00:07:00Come on.
00:07:01Give me the radio room.
00:07:04This is Flynn talking.
00:07:06Check on a stolen car number...

00:07:47If he ain't a black market man, my name ain't Birmingham, and I can prove it is.
00:07:51He's right.
00:07:52That man's business is as dark as a...
00:07:54It ain't exactly that dark.
00:07:55Can you identify him from a picture?
00:07:57Yes, sir.
00:07:58As mad as I am with that man, I hate to think of what I think of him.
00:08:01It makes me blush.
00:08:04Here.
00:08:04Look through this.
00:08:05If it's in here, I'll sure find it.
00:08:07And I hope it's in there, too.
00:08:10Now, let me see.
00:08:11No.
00:08:11No.
00:08:12That is...
00:08:13That's a funny little character, ain't it?
00:08:16No.
00:08:17No.
00:08:17Let it...
00:08:18Uncle Nicodemus.
00:08:20I wonder what he's doing.
00:08:21Look at that Zoot suit he got on.
00:08:23It's killing him, ain't it?
00:08:24Yeah.
00:08:24Big house, you'll make some funny suits.
00:08:26There ain't him.
00:08:29Let's see.
00:08:30Right along here.
00:08:32There.
00:08:35Let's see.
00:08:36Now, no.
00:08:36That ain't him.
00:08:38Why did you turn that page over so quick?
00:08:39Oh, that page...
00:08:40Oh, that's a desperate character.
00:08:41You don't want to see that.
00:08:42Come on.
00:08:42We want to look over here.
00:08:43Now, right here.
00:08:43He's right over here.
00:08:44I want to look at it.
00:08:45All right.
00:08:52Well, what do you know about that?
00:08:54What do you know about that?
00:08:56Well, you see, it's a little...
00:08:57I mean, it's a little error.
00:09:00You see, I had that suit made for a masquerade.
00:09:03I went to a ball, you know, and I win the contest.
00:09:05And you should have seen me dance.
00:09:07I jumped up.
00:09:07Here's a step I did.
00:09:11You expect us to believe that?
00:09:14Well, uh, it could be.
00:09:16Aren't you two trying to kid us?
00:09:17I'm going to run you both in.
00:09:19No, wait a minute.
00:09:20You can't do that to us.
00:09:21I came here looking for Pop.
00:09:22Yeah, you don't know who he is.
00:09:23Hey, hey, hey.
00:09:24Wait a minute.
00:09:25What's going on here?
00:09:25Who are these two?
00:09:26He says he's Charlie Chan's son.
00:09:28Well, so sorry.
00:09:29I must apologize, Captain.
00:09:31What he say is true.
00:09:33This is number three son, Tommy.
00:09:35And this one is second assistant.
00:09:37and Birmingham Brown, both at times often feeble-minded.
00:09:42All right, boys.
00:09:45Now, you two are supposed to take baggage to a hotel.
00:09:48We did, Pop.
00:09:49Then we came looking for you.
00:09:50You know we have to look after you.
00:09:52You look after me until I'm out of sight.
00:09:55Oh, Pop, you know we're a big help to you.
00:09:57Your worries are our worries.
00:09:58In fact, no trouble is too big for us.
00:10:01Some of your trouble too big for me.
00:10:03Come, we must investigate slight case of murder.
00:10:07Murder?
00:10:08Well, here I come.
00:10:09Here I go.
00:10:14Uh-oh.
00:10:15The end of the line.
00:10:17Now, she can't do that to me.
00:10:18I paid her my alimony this morning.
00:10:20She can't do that to me.
00:10:21Mr. Chan!
00:10:22Mr. Chan, come get me out, please.
00:10:24I done changed my mind.
00:10:26Mr. Chan!

00:10:46I'm Mr. Brett, Mr. Chan.
00:10:48So happy to meet you.
00:10:49I'm sorry to keep you waiting, but we've just finished a broadcast.
00:10:53Now, why do you wish to see Miss Hall?
00:10:55Is she in trouble?
00:10:56I wish to speak to Miss Hall regarding her automobile.
00:11:00Oh.
00:11:01Oh, well, right this way, sir.
00:11:07I'm mopping, mopping, mopping, mopping, so why you walk on the floor till my nerves go yingle yangle?
00:11:12Well, we haven't learned to walk on the ceiling yet.
00:11:14I speak serious stuff, and you speak yours.
00:11:17Who are you?
00:11:18What do you want here?
00:11:19I'm Tommy Chan.
00:11:20This is Birmingham Brown.
00:11:21We're assistant to Charlie Chan, the world-famous detective.
00:11:23Hold her.
00:11:24Miss Swenson!
00:11:25You're benigny.
00:11:26Sorry, Mr. Brett.
00:11:28Right this way.
00:11:29Yes.
00:11:32They told me to advertise on the air.
00:11:35Well, any program that smells like the one you people just put on needs the air.
00:11:39And you think I'm going to continue paying you?
00:11:44Well, this is radio.
00:11:46I try to put on a program, and the manager himself lets in tourists to gape at us like goldfish.
00:11:52Mrs. Marsh.
00:11:53Herbert.
00:11:53These people...
00:11:54Herbert Sinclair!
00:11:55You were supposed to definitely inform the management that I wanted no sightseers in the studio
00:12:00while my actors were either rehearsing or broadcasting.
00:12:03Quiet!
00:12:04Never mind making excuses.
00:12:05Mrs. Marsh, these people are not tourists.
00:12:08This gentleman is here because, well, it's something I'm sure won't happen again.
00:12:14You've said that before, and so have you.
00:12:16Don't talk back to me.
00:12:18Well, what do you want?
00:12:20Really wish private conversation with Miss Diane Hall.
00:12:25You wish to see me?
00:12:27You are Miss Hall?
00:12:28Yes.
00:12:29Permit me to introduce myself.
00:12:31Permit me to depart.
00:12:33Breaking into conferences that I'm paying for.
00:12:35Come, Herbert.
00:12:40I am Charlie Chan, representative of federal government.
00:12:44Federal government?
00:12:45The law?
00:12:46Oh, well, when the law arrives, Willie ran depart.
00:12:49Too little.
00:12:55Too little.
00:12:57Miss Hall, tonight you report car stolen.
00:13:01Oh, that.
00:13:02But it wasn't stolen.
00:13:04It was merely borrowed.
00:13:05By whom, please?
00:13:06Well, I...
00:13:07I don't know.
00:13:09You see, Gloria and I...
00:13:11Oh, excuse me.
00:13:12This is Gloria Bain, Mr. Chan.
00:13:14After rehearsal tonight, Gloria and I went out to the parking lot.
00:13:17And Diane's car was gone.
00:13:19So I telephoned police.
00:13:21Then we went to a restaurant.
00:13:23Ate and talked with some friends and came back up here.
00:13:26And there was Diane's car right back in the parking lot.
00:13:28Your car missing about 8.30 tonight?
00:13:31That's right.
00:13:32But how did you know?
00:13:33And why should the federal government be interested in a stolen car that wasn't completely stolen?
00:13:38That is all.
00:13:39I'm most fortunate to have met such charming radio ladies.
00:13:43Hope to meet you again.
00:13:45Very soon, perhaps.
00:13:48Perhaps.
00:13:59Oh, I beg your pardon.
00:14:01Sir, to meet a gentleman who apologizes for bumping you in these days is a rare thing indeed.
00:14:07He is either a coward or a gentleman.
00:14:10I give you credit for the lack of it.
00:14:13Uh, Mr. Chan.
00:14:14This is Mr. Horace Carlos, the Shakespearean actor, now of Motion Pictures and Radio.
00:14:19And television, Mr. Brett?
00:14:21Of course.
00:14:21Yes, once the foremost Shakespearean actor of my time, but now, char.
00:14:28Now I am known only for the mask behind which I hide when I play the mad monster.
00:14:36On radio, screen, and television.
00:14:39Still, it is a living.
00:14:42And so, good night to you, one and all.
00:14:51Carlos acts on and off the stage.
00:14:54Did you learn everything that you came to see this all about?
00:14:57Yes, thanks for our kind assistance.
00:15:00Well, good.
00:15:01Now, if you will excuse me.

00:23:54These boys are second team assistants.
00:23:58You receive my telegram and follow instructions?
00:24:01Immediately.
00:24:02All of our radar equipment has been taken away by the government.
00:24:05What about record of experiments and copies of secret patents?
00:24:10The government has the originals.
00:24:11I have my own copies in the safe.
00:24:14Contents of safe only secure so long as someone outside watching safe.
00:24:20You know, since receiving your wire, I've found evidence of several attempts to break in here.
00:24:25Do you think I ought to hire special guards?
00:24:27No.
00:24:28Now that I am present, contents of safe becomes trap.
00:24:32And papers inside are only bait with which to catch enemy rat.
00:24:38Sure, a lot of gadgets in here.
00:24:40Yes.
00:24:41Useful gadgets, too.
00:24:43Right here, we began the work that today allows our night fighters to hunt down and destroy enemy airplanes without
00:24:48even seeing them.
00:24:49Gosh.
00:24:51Did that sound spooky?
00:24:53Really, radar.
00:24:55Radar.

00:24:59Well, radar is, um, well, it's sort of, um, uh, Birmingham.
00:25:03Don't you know anything?
00:25:05I know as much about radar as you do.
00:25:08What do I know is a thing?
00:25:10Now, you ought to know I studied radar.
00:25:12What is that?
00:25:14A temperature or a climatic tunnel.
00:25:17You make weather in tunnel?
00:25:19Yes.
00:25:20That is, the extremes of heat and cold.
00:25:22To test the reliability of radar and television in all sorts of climatic conditions.
00:25:27The tunnel has two compartments.
00:25:29One for heat and one for cold.
00:25:30That light works flashing whenever there's a foreign body in the tunnel.
00:25:34No matter what the weather in there.
00:25:36Now, this is a funny thing.
00:25:37You know, what is this?
00:25:41Help!
00:25:42Mr. Chance!
00:25:43This light is not dragging all the way!

00:26:00Mr. Chance!
00:26:02Birmingham!
00:26:03When in strange laboratories,
00:26:05do not poke nose into strange machines like these.
00:26:13Also, keep finger out of same.
00:26:15Goodbye.
00:26:16Goodbye, Charlie.
00:26:17Thank you for coming in.
00:26:18Happy to have met you.
00:26:19Hope to see you some more.
00:26:20Goodbye.
00:26:20Goodbye, gentlemen.
00:26:24Come in.
00:26:33May I speak to you for a moment, Mr. Brett?
00:26:35Mr. Brett.
00:26:37Why all the formality, Gloria?
00:26:38I'm here on business.
00:26:41I want better parts and more money.
00:26:43Starting tomorrow.
00:26:45You say that as if you were ordering me to give them to you.
00:26:48I am.
00:26:50Now, look here, young lady.
00:26:52Instead of getting more parts,
00:26:53you're liable to lose those you already have.
00:26:55I wouldn't be so hasty, Mr. Brett.
00:26:57You'd better let me finish.
00:26:58Please, Gloria.
00:26:59I'm busy.
00:27:00Remember these.
00:27:04Remember them?
00:27:05What do you mean?
00:27:06That's the last pack of my private matches, Mr. Brett.
00:27:09And I gave them to you yesterday morning in this building.
00:27:11Well,
00:27:13does that entitle you to order me to give you better jobs?
00:27:16Diane's car was stolen last night.
00:27:19I found these later in the seat.
00:27:23Well?
00:27:27Is this blackmail?
00:27:29Blackmail.
00:27:31Oh, that's bad, isn't it?
00:27:33Perhaps I'd just better give these to Mr. Chan and see what he says.
00:27:36Oh, wait.
00:27:37I'll see that you get better jobs.
00:27:41Thank you so much, Mr. Brett.
00:27:58The manager, please.
00:27:59Who's calling?
00:28:00This is Brett talking.
00:28:03Listen.
00:28:04Gloria Bain, an actress here,
00:28:06knows that I used Diana Hall's car last night.
00:28:09She's blackmailing me.
00:28:10What'll I do?
00:28:24Personally, I think the program needs an entire change of personnel.
00:28:28However, I'll listen from my office,
00:28:29and then I'll decide.
00:28:31What did you say?
00:28:32Then don't say it.
00:28:33Come along.
00:28:37Pop, how can we solve a case
00:28:38just by watching people through a glass?
00:28:41What detective needs is great patience.
00:28:44Oh, I know that.
00:28:45When it comes to detective work,
00:28:46I know my P's and Q's.
00:28:48But are you familiar with rest of alphabet?
00:28:53Oh, Walter, to drink when your wife's in trouble,
00:28:56to say nothing of my broken leg.
00:28:59Drink?
00:29:00It seems as though I've heard that word before.
00:29:02What are we to do?
00:29:04Trouble?
00:29:06Nothing but trouble staring us in the face.
00:29:09We must move by the first of the month,
00:29:11and we've no place to go.
00:29:14Why can't we settle down
00:29:16and be like other people?
00:29:18Now keep your chin up, Mary,
00:29:20and look on the brighter side.
00:29:24Of course, Grandmama.
00:29:26You're always right.
00:29:27Always.
00:29:32I never had such a sudden headache in my life.
00:29:35I was all set to do some fancy ad-living myself.
00:29:37Uh-oh, the battle acts.
00:29:39Well, it wasn't bad.
00:29:42That is, not as bad as usual.
00:29:43You sounded poorly toward the end.
00:29:45Better stop gadding about.
00:29:47Come along.
00:29:48You want to stand here talking all night?
00:29:51Can I get you anything, Gloria?
00:29:54A cigarette might help.
00:29:55Oh.
00:29:58Will you give me a light, Mr. Brett?
00:30:00Why, of course.
00:30:04Well, that's better.
00:30:22Gloria, what happened?
00:30:24Get young lady to dressing room.
00:30:26Quick, hurry.
00:30:27Bring her in here.
00:30:43I beg your pardon.
00:30:44Yes, please.
00:30:45Why is it that whenever anything happens around here,
00:30:48you're always on hand?
00:30:49That's you, but they always telling me down at the office.
00:30:56Hey, Tommy.
00:30:57I know the cigarette shortage is tough,
00:30:59but that ain't no reason why you should snitch a cigarette butt
00:31:02from that old lady.
00:31:03You know I don't smoke,
00:31:04but what other people try to grab often turn out
00:31:06to be valuable clues.
00:31:07Clue to what?
00:31:08Well, huh?
00:31:09That's what we'll have to find out.
00:31:11You just include me out.
00:31:13Did anybody call her, doctor?
00:31:16Doctor, no use now.
00:31:17Young lady already dead.
00:31:20Dead?
00:31:23The corner was right, sir.
00:31:25Well, he said Miss Bain was poisoned.
00:31:26Toxic reaction proved she was,
00:31:28but I don't know what type poison was used.
00:31:31I've never run into it before.
00:31:32Say,
00:31:33do you suspect any of the people who were present when she died?
00:31:37Suspect everyone on general principle,
00:31:39but to assistance already watching person who interests me most.
00:31:45Thank you so much, doctor.
00:31:48Good night.
00:31:48Good night.
00:31:50Good night.
00:32:15Well, what do you want?
00:32:17Why, Cooper?
00:32:20Broad.
00:32:21How are you?
00:32:23Not Broad now.
00:32:25It's Brett.
00:32:26Come on in.
00:32:44So it's Brett now instead of Broad, huh?
00:32:47It was Brett when we worked in France together, remember?
00:32:50Seems like we're working together again.
00:32:53Thought I recognized your voice on my phone.
00:32:55Asking for the manager, please.
00:32:57Oh, so you're the manager.
00:32:59The head man of the party, huh?
00:33:00Not me.
00:33:03I just answered the phone.
00:33:05Someone else.
00:33:06Someone unknown to me.
00:33:08Listens in.
00:33:09If the caller is okay,
00:33:11the caller switched away from this line.
00:33:14I see.
00:33:17What do you care if we don't know who our boss is?
00:33:21We've worked that way before.
00:33:23I've got to know, Cooper.
00:33:24There's been two murders on this job already.
00:33:27Two murders?
00:33:30Yeah.
00:33:32I see what you mean.
00:33:34We should know the name of our boss to protect ourselves.
00:33:39Listen.
00:33:42Hello?
00:33:44Who's calling?
00:33:45Manager, please.

00:34:00We'll need a lot of information.
00:34:02We have to squeal.

00:34:09Someone's coming.
00:34:10I'm going.
00:34:19You hear nothing which is said inside strange office?
00:34:23Just a mumble and a jumble, Mr. Chan.
00:34:25But outside in the hall,
00:34:27you overhear Mr. Cooper
00:34:28call Mr. Brett
00:34:29Mr. Brought.
00:34:31That's right, Pop.
00:34:33Mean anything to you, Charlie?
00:34:34A British intelligence-seeking espionage agent
00:34:37named Rolf Brought.
00:34:39Rolf Brought.
00:34:40Oh, and the radio station manager
00:34:42calls himself Ralph Brett.
00:34:46Nothing in office except table chair and telephone, huh?
00:34:49Yes, sir.
00:34:50It must have been a race book in office
00:34:52because it was just as clean as I is
00:34:54when I make a bet.
00:34:56Captain, please detail man to check all people coming

00:35:32Is that the heel print you're looking for?
00:35:35The person who wear this shoe
00:35:37kill Roush.
00:35:39By gosh, you mean Brett murdered this fellow Roush?
00:35:58Must locate Mr. Brett at once.
00:36:00Let's go.
00:36:36Manager, please.
00:36:37Where's the car?
00:36:38Brett.
00:36:41Listen.
00:36:42Charlie Chan knows all about the Roush murder.
00:36:45He's after me.
00:36:46You've got to protect me.

00:37:47Doormans say Mr. Brett's still here.
00:37:50Has not left building.
00:37:56Mr. Ryan.
00:37:57Yeah.
00:37:57You see Mr. Brett lately?
00:37:59I saw him eavesdropping outside of his own office.
00:38:02As if there were a couple of ex-wives in there waiting to collect alimony.
00:38:07Not funny, huh?
00:38:08When do you see this?
00:38:10About 20 minutes ago.
00:38:11Pop, that's when we were in there.
00:38:13Must ask police to guard all doors.
00:38:16Police?
00:38:17Why?

00:38:26Well, what's the right?
00:38:27Because he's a killer.
00:38:28Yeah, he'll just be my luck to catch up with it.
00:38:30Come on.
00:38:33Say, it's eight hours since Brett has been seen.
00:38:35You know, he must have a hideout somewhere in this building.
00:38:38You have man posted at every exit?
00:38:41Sure.
00:38:42He can't get by them.
00:38:44Think we'll take a look on various floors.
00:38:46Good.
00:38:54Got to change the bottle before I'm cleaning some more.
00:39:01You know, Birmingham, everywhere we go, we bump into that woman.
00:39:04Oh, don't be so suspicious, Tommy.
00:39:06After a while, you'll be telling me I did the murder.
00:39:13Oh, looky here.
00:39:14Did you see, uh...
00:39:15Not in the last ten minutes.
00:39:17No.
00:39:17No, but there was a fella here.
00:39:19Yeah.
00:39:19Oh, he ain't the one.
00:39:20No.
00:39:21No.
00:39:21The fella I'm looking for here...
00:39:22I didn't see him.
00:39:23But if you wait until I...
00:39:24I ain't got time.
00:39:25No.
00:39:26But maybe if you could...
00:39:27I'm busy that night.
00:39:28Oh, sure now.
00:39:28Yeah.
00:39:29Then looky here.
00:39:30Right.
00:39:30Do you think that, uh...
00:39:31Ah, no, it's getting late.
00:39:33Yeah.
00:39:34Why don't you go...
00:39:35I ain't got a phone.
00:39:35No.
00:39:36But I could if you were...
00:39:37Well, my car's in the shop.
00:39:38Oh, yeah?
00:39:39Mm-hmm.
00:39:39Well, I'll see you then.
00:39:39I'll be soon.
00:39:40I'll be soon.
00:39:40You'll call me, huh?
00:39:41Okay, kid.
00:39:41Okay, so long.
00:39:41All right, goodbye.
00:39:43Do you know that he...
00:39:44He can't be that bad.
00:39:47Look, the laboratory door's open.
00:39:49Yeah?
00:39:50Do you suppose Brett's in here?
00:39:51Well, if he is, let him stay in there.
00:39:53I'm tired of tangling with them gadgets.
00:39:57Well, it ain't used to being this lonesome.
00:40:00Uh, nobody home.
00:40:02Let's go.
00:40:02Wait.
00:40:05Oh!
00:40:05What's the matter?
00:40:07Look, the safe bin robber.
00:40:09Perhaps the robber's still in here.
00:40:11Robber's murder.
00:40:11Why, this is a regular cleaning and dying place.
00:40:14Let's get out of here.
00:40:15Come, come.
00:40:19Could have been a little light around here.
00:40:21Mm.
00:40:23Uh-oh, I'm surrounded.
00:40:24Come.
00:40:28Say, this looks like a good hiding place.
00:40:30Let's take a look.
00:40:32Let's take a look.
00:40:34And nothing will do him to go in and take a look.
00:40:37All right, you know what, Tommy?
00:40:39When you're hunting a killer, you're supposed to have a guard on the outside, just in case.
00:40:42So I think I'll stay on the outside, just in case.
00:40:45In case of what?
00:40:46That the killer's in here.
00:40:48Don't you stay with me.
00:40:49All right.
00:40:50Gosh, it's dark in here.
00:40:51It sure is.
00:40:52Wait a minute.
00:40:53I turn on the light.
00:40:56Oh, sorry.
00:41:01Oh, sΓ.
00:41:08Don't do it.
00:41:14Oh, sΓ.
00:41:15Oh, sΓ.
00:41:17Oh, sΓ.
00:41:20Oh.
00:41:30Hey!
00:41:31Hey!
00:41:32Who turned on the heat?
00:41:33Who turned on the coal?

00:41:37Who?
00:41:39Hey!
00:41:40I so wish I had some smoke, dude!
00:41:42I wish I had a little underwear!
00:41:45Boy, that's the most crazy to live in this kind of stuff!
00:41:48Hey!
00:41:52Hey!
00:41:53It looks like the place has been robbed!
00:41:56Looks in this case not deceiving.

00:42:12Hey!
00:42:17Hey!
00:42:18Hey!
00:42:24Hello!
00:42:28Someone in here?
00:42:30Is that someone calling?
00:42:32I guess...
00:42:34Yes.
00:42:34Yes. Well, well, what a little tunnel, Pop. It ain't a place to get a suntan. What you two do
00:42:47in here? Anybody else in tunnel? No, Pop. Was Spricker Light working when you come in here?
00:43:02Should we fall again? Well, nothing now, Pop. I tell you, Pop, there's someone else in here. But the papers
00:43:10are missing from Hamilton State. Someone besides assistance in this pool.
00:43:39We've got Brett, but he's dead.
00:43:45Coroner's just finished, Charlie. He says Brett wasn't poisoned. He died of a fall from a great height.
00:43:50Brett. Brett last seen alive on the second floor of Cosmo Building. Later, he found dead on 10th floor.
00:44:02Someone would have us believe victim fall eight stories up.
00:44:18Hello? I'll look at the telephone now.
00:44:21No one sent for you. Isn't the name Cooper?
00:44:24Why, yes.
00:44:29Go on with work.
00:44:32Mr. Cooper, alias Carper, alias Cowper.
00:44:37Charlie Chan.
00:44:39I remember you since last time I arrested you. Six years ago in Singapore, remember?
00:44:46Yeah, I remember.
00:44:49Very great pleasure to arrest you again, Mr. Cooper.
00:44:54For whom you work now.
00:44:56I'm not talking.
00:44:58You talked with your friend, Mr. Brett, yesterday.
00:45:01Now he is murdered.
00:45:04Brett? Murdered?
00:45:06I had nothing to do with it.
00:45:08I don't know who I work for.
00:45:09I only answer the phone.
00:45:11Someone else switches the calls.
00:45:13I never hear a thing.
00:45:14I never hear a thing.
00:45:22What's you find out?
00:45:24There's a cut-in relay installed here, Mr. Chan.
00:45:26Calls can be switched.
00:45:28Can you locate place where calls switch to?
00:45:30Yeah, but it might take a couple of days.
00:45:33Keep working.
00:45:35You gentlemen will remain with Mr. Cooper.
00:45:38He will continue to answer phone calls as usual.
00:45:43I'll do it.
00:45:44I'm not getting mixed up in murder.
00:45:46Good.
00:45:50Mr. Dixon?
00:45:51Yes, the radio impersonator.
00:45:53Glad to meet you, Mr. Chan.
00:45:55Radio impersonator.
00:45:57Good.
00:45:58You know what you are to do?
00:46:00Death of Mr. Brett not yet made public.
00:46:03Wish to try experiment.
00:46:05I'm ready, sir.
00:46:16I'm ready, sir.
00:46:21Hello?
00:46:24Who's calling?
00:46:26This is Brett calling.
00:46:28Hurry it up.
00:46:29Brett.
00:46:30Brett.
00:46:31I've got to see you.
00:46:35He hung up.
00:46:40Dead.
00:46:49Use service elevator.
00:46:53Come seventh floor.
00:46:57If I not there, come tenth floor.
00:47:04It's the unknown leader, Charlie.
00:47:06The one you're after.
00:47:07The killer, Pop.
00:47:08Thank you so much.
00:47:10Please say nothing of this to anyone.
00:47:12I understand.
00:47:21No one's in sight, Pop.
00:47:22We go tenth floor.
00:47:30Wait.
00:47:31Uh, we go tenth floor by stairs.
00:47:34Uh, you go in elevator.
00:47:35That way, we have killer between us.
00:47:44There's a little walking.
00:47:46Because I know that.
00:47:49Hmm, there's a long way down.
00:47:54Oh, good business.
00:47:55Help.
00:47:56Come here, somebody.
00:47:57Help.
00:48:04Elevator already arrived.
00:48:07Birmingham, come out of there.
00:48:09Is that you, Mr. Chan?
00:48:11For heaven's sake, come get me out of here.
00:48:13Well, get down.
00:48:14Get down yourself.
00:48:15Get down.
00:48:16Oh, not without a parachute.
00:48:17One drop of this is certain death.
00:48:19Birmingham, what are you talking about?
00:48:22Mr. Chan, what is you standing on?
00:48:25On the floor.
00:48:26The floor?
00:48:26Get down.
00:48:27Where did that floor come from?
00:48:31Well, what do you mean, what floor come from?
00:48:34Mr. Chan, when I was down on the seventh floor, that elevator floor went out from under me and left
00:48:38me standing on nothing.
00:48:40You can sure imagine things, Birmingham.
00:48:42Imagine.
00:48:42No, I ain't, Mr. Chan.
00:48:43When I went in that elevator, the elevator door closed.
00:48:46That floor went out from under me just like a trap door and left me hanging on my fingernail.
00:48:50I was looking out eight of nine floors.
00:48:52Straight down.
00:48:53You mean to say bottom of elevator fallout?
00:48:56Yes, sir.
00:49:02Perhaps Mr. Brett receives same message we get.
00:49:05You mean come to the seventh floor, then to the tenth, Pop?
00:49:08Believe fate save us from dying same way Mr. Brett died.
00:49:12He was killed by fall from great height.
00:49:17We descend to basement.
00:49:19Yes, Pop.
00:49:19No, not by elevator.
00:49:22Come.
00:49:26Blood stains on floor of shaft.
00:49:29This is where Mr. Brett fall to death.
00:49:37You're getting to be a habit.
00:49:38Coming in here and interrupting my program rehearsals.
00:49:41It's an outrage.
00:49:42Murder also outraged.
00:49:45Do you know what I pay for my programs?
00:49:47I'm interested only that murderers shall pay for killing of Miss Bain and Mr. Brett.
00:49:53You all present when Miss Bain die.
00:49:56You're stupid thinking these people would murder anyone.
00:49:59They're too busy murdering the English language.
00:50:02Testimony is Miss Bain say she expect more work and more money.
00:50:07Gloria did say something like that.
00:50:09That's right.
00:50:10Who can give her more work and more money?
00:50:13Mr. Brett?
00:50:14Certainly.
00:50:15He's the slave driver.
00:50:16Or rather, he was.
00:50:21Very friendly with Mr. Brett?
00:50:23Gloria couldn't stand him.
00:50:24She detested him and...
00:50:26Oh.
00:50:27Yes?
00:50:27I just remembered.
00:50:29Gloria did say she'd talked with Brett.
00:50:31Gloria said he'd promised her a lot more work.
00:50:34I was surprised because I knew he liked her no better than she liked him.
00:50:38Wait.
00:50:39Gloria, you did say something like that.
00:50:41Something about, uh, about...
00:50:43Oh.
00:50:44Did she say what, Mr. Rant?
00:50:46Oh, I don't recall.
00:50:48You see, I gab a lot and other people gab back at me.
00:50:52I can't remember half of the things I hear.
00:50:55Please try to remember.
00:50:56Might be most important clue.
00:50:58Yes, surely.
00:50:59It'll come back to me.
00:51:00And when it does, I'll tell you right away, sir.
00:51:04That is all.
00:51:05Thank you so much.
00:51:06Thanks, indeed.
00:51:07Come, Herbert.
00:51:12Well, what do you make of it, Charlie?
00:51:14So many fish in fish market.
00:51:18Even flowers smell same.
00:51:21Much confusion.
00:51:28We go on in 20 seconds.
00:51:33This is television experimental station WXK9X, presenting Willie Rand, Ace Comedian, and his own conception of the dance of the
00:51:41spirit.
00:51:58What do you do here?
00:52:00Pop, we were just about to go out to look for you.
00:52:01So it seems.
00:52:03Honest, Pop.
00:52:04Mr. Rant said he remembers something important.
00:52:05He wants to see you right after this show.
00:52:28Oh, real flowers.
00:52:44I made a fever.
00:52:45Didn't ask for it.
00:52:51Now, ladies and gentlemen, we transfer you to tele-studio number two, where Miguel Moreno and his marimba band carry
00:52:57on during the second portion of the program.
00:53:01Well, Willie, what happened to your closing speech?
00:53:03Did you forget it?
00:53:04Yes, Willie, what happened?
00:53:05I don't know what happened.
00:53:07You got a cigarette?
00:53:10Thanks, old man.
00:53:18Mr. Rant, number three, son, Tommy, tell me you remember something you wish to tell me.
00:53:24Now I remember what Gloria told me.
00:53:26And I've got a lot of other good information for you, too.
00:53:29Yes, yes.
00:53:30This afternoon, when I was up on the seventh floor, I saw...
00:53:38What trouble, Mr. Rant?
00:53:44Charlie, he's dead.
00:53:46Dead?
00:53:48Get cigarette, he smoked.
00:53:50That same analyzed quickly.
00:53:52Mr. Chester, you come with me.
00:54:01Mr. Chan, my office is never locked.
00:54:03The people on television and radio are in and out of here at all hours.
00:54:19Well, Mr. Chan, I've never seen that thing before in my life.
00:54:22One moment, please.
00:54:23This is obviously control switch for mysterious trapdoor and service elevator.
00:54:30Mr. Chester, we visit police headquarters.
00:54:37Rant was poisoned by the same stuff that killed Miss Bain.
00:54:40But there is no poison in the cigarette he smoked.
00:54:42They said Miss Bain smoked a cigarette just before she died, Pop.
00:54:45Yes.
00:54:46Also given her by Mr. Chester.
00:54:48That janitress.
00:54:48She picked this up right where Miss Bain fell.
00:54:50I took it away from her.
00:54:52Mr. Chester, this is cigarette smoked by Miss Bain?
00:54:54Yes.
00:54:55Tested.
00:54:56Why have you not mentioned this before?
00:54:59Guess I slipped my mind, Pop.
00:55:00Oh, slipped mine.
00:55:05There's no poison in this either.
00:55:07Release, Mr. Chester.
00:55:08Oh, but Charlie, the gadget that worked the elevator, is in his office.
00:55:12Sure, he must be the unknown espionage leader we're after, Pop.
00:55:15Person who sent messages to Mr. Brett on teletype machine must have similar machine at other end of line.
00:55:22There is no teletype instrument in Mr. Chester's office.
00:55:27Release him.
00:55:35What are we to do?
00:55:37Trouble?
00:55:38Nothing but trouble staring at his face.
00:55:43Why, this program is strictly slush.
00:55:46It is transcription of last program made by Miss Bain when she dies so strangely.
00:55:52Only wish to hear end of program.
00:55:55We must move by the first of the month, and we've no place to go.
00:56:00Why can't we...
00:56:01Hey, she must have stepped nearer the microphone.
00:56:03She did.
00:56:04Please, turn up on him.
00:56:06Now listen very quietly.
00:56:09Down.
00:56:10And be like...
00:56:15You hear strange noise?
00:56:17Yes, a popping noise when she was sobbing.
00:56:20We hear same noise on record of Mr. Rand's voice made during television broadcast.
00:56:28Believe now, know how both Miss Bain and Mr. Rand were killed.
00:56:33We'll need assistance of radio technician to prove it.
00:56:37Please.
00:56:38Right away.
00:56:50Hey, those look like bits of glass.
00:56:53Or gelatin used in making capsule.
00:56:57We have only part of proof.
00:57:00Now we visit Studio C downstairs.
00:57:10Murderer ready to do more business.
00:57:13This is what we look for.
00:57:15Thank you so much.
00:57:19Doc, my radio man said that the studio microphones were rigged so that a short wave radio beam sent from
00:57:25some part of the building,
00:57:26it would explode those capsules.
00:57:35There is some sort of colorless gas in the capsule, Mr. Chan, but it certainly is not poison.
00:57:40A cigarette, please, doctor.
00:57:43When did you start smoking, Pop?
00:57:44Quiet.
00:57:46Would you kindly light-same, please?
00:57:54Now you will blow some smoke into the beaker.
00:58:00Just, what is it, Pop?
00:58:14Well, that's it, Mr. Chan.
00:58:16Alone, either the gas or the cigarette is harmless.
00:58:19But if someone first inhaled gas and then pretty soon smoked cigarette, the combination of gas and nicotine becomes a
00:58:26poison and kills instantly.
00:58:28Thank you so much, doctor.
00:58:30That is exactly what I wanted to know.
00:58:34My men are at every exit with orders not to let any of our people leave the building.
00:58:38Good.
00:58:39Mrs. Marsh, Mr. Sinclair, and Miss Hall already here.
00:58:46Well?
00:58:47Well?
00:58:47Chester, Nelson, and Carlos are in the building, Pop.
00:58:50Even that wacky janitor's.
00:58:52Good.
00:58:52All suspects on hand.
00:58:55Come.
00:59:02Believe leader of enemy agents and killer of Roush have office somewhere on this floor.
00:59:09Office containing teletype machine.
00:59:11Okay.
00:59:12We'll soon find out.
00:59:18Birmingham, you take another office.
00:59:20Alone, not me.
00:59:21I like company.
00:59:29Look.
00:59:30Pop!
00:59:31Captain Flynn, we found one.
00:59:41Do you suppose this is the machine we want?
00:59:43Could be.
00:59:57Here is a shortwave radio set used to explode death capsule.
01:00:26Let's go.
01:00:39I'm going up the stairs.
01:00:41Warn guards at exits.
01:00:43All right.
