00:50sin un lugar de una sola Copa?
00:52Justo un gran gran partido.

03:56En Rhode Island, the first Gaelic immigrants arrived in the early 18th century,
04:01fleeing hardship, religious persecution, or simply seeking a better life.
04:07We have people here that are of Scottish descent, and a lot of us aren't.
04:12But playing with people that have such a strong connection to the Scottish culture is different for us.
04:19For Samantha, that connection comes through music, and she admits that soccer has never really been her thing.
04:25I'm a hockey girl. I'm a hockey girl. I can't help it.
04:3532 years ago, when the U.S. hosted the 94 World Cup, many questioned whether the country truly cared about
04:41soccer.
04:42Back then, the U.S. was seen as an unlikely host for the football world, and even many Americans were
04:48skeptical about the sport.
04:51Newspapers struggled to find fans in the streets.
04:53Columnists openly dismissed the tournament's relevance, even asking whether Europeans should be expected to care about baseball's World Series.
05:04But the growth of soccer in the country is now undeniable, driven by major investment in infrastructure, rising participation, and
05:13new economic opportunities for cities and regions alike.
05:17I'm still learning soccer, right? I grew up with baseball, football, and basketball.
05:22Soccer now, as I see it, is my kids' age. You know, they're in their 20s.
05:26I got exposed to soccer with my children when they started playing soccer here.
05:31We didn't have a lot of soccer teams. We didn't have a youth soccer when I was younger. We do
05:35now.
05:35Just minutes from Providence lies Potoket, a city that has embraced soccer, something unthinkable just a few years ago, as
05:44a way to revitalize an old industrial area along the river.
05:47We needed to get it done to tie to the World Cup, right? That this stadium would be an active
05:53site, right? We had the timing on our side. We got it done.
05:56And so now we're tying it into that opportunity with the World Cup.
06:01Much of this growing interest is driven by immigrant communities.
06:05We talk about our diversity. We have a high Cape Verdean population.
06:08The Cape Verdean team being able to come here to do a stop and to meet and greet and meet
06:12people and do their things.
06:14Soccer is definitely in Rhode Island right now.
06:19Rhode Island and Massachusetts are home to the largest Cape Verdean diaspora in the world.
06:26This is one of the biggest Cape Verdean businesses in the U.S.
06:31And he's paying attention to our conversation.
06:34Are you excited about the World Cup?
06:35Dude, I'm so excited. It's like every Cape Verdean, our heart is like alive right now because it's huge.
06:43Like we're very small islands. We made it to the World Cup.
06:46Thank you, man.
06:48From this area, there's a lot of at least a couple of 10,000, 20,000 Cape Verdeans living in
06:55this city.
06:56This is Nelson, who has lived in the United States for a decade and knows the Cape Verdean community in
07:02the region inside out,
07:03working to preserve the links between his homeland and thousands of emigrants,
07:08whose first arrivals came on fishing boats more than two centuries ago.
07:12For Cape Verdeans, a nation of just half a million people,
07:16their first ever appearance at the World Cup is a matter of pride.
07:20I care, but I don't understand about football.
07:23So why do you care?
07:25Because my country is there.
07:27It's the first time you go to the World Cup.
07:47And in the small shop that sells Cape Verde memorabilia,
07:51they say they've never been busier than in recent weeks.
07:54We've already been busy for a week.
07:59We arrived here at 7am and we came here at 10am, 11am.
08:05I've never seen such a search for Cape Verde articles.
08:09We were always busy for the time of independence,
08:14but now we're more than ever.
08:20You see everybody wearing this shirt, everybody.
08:24We're super proud of our team.
08:25Everybody's happy all over us.
08:26Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut.
08:28We're on the map.
08:29They put us on the map, to be honest.
08:31And now, people can see it.
08:35Cape Verde, Rivala, and Capa 2016!
08:40Yay!
08:40Yay!
08:41Yay!
08:41Woo!
08:42Woo!
08:43Woo!

08:50Woo!
08:50This unites the country, you know, because in all countries,
08:54you have this.
08:54You have politics.
08:56You have a region.
08:57You have regions.
08:58You have north against south.
09:00And you see those different regions.
09:04But when the national team is on the field playing,
09:08you have one country.
09:09And this is no political party, no religion.
09:14Nobody can achieve it.
09:17We're the smallest state in the union, and I think, actually,
09:20our size worked in our favor.
09:22You know, I can call and pick up the phone and call the governor,
09:25or you can pick up the phone and call the mayor,
09:26or our city council people.
09:27We're all in community together.
09:29We live together.
09:30We work together.
09:31We dine together.
09:33And so I think the tight-knit nature of the community
09:35allowed us to pull this off.
