00:16Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 live here on KMTV. I'm Julia Dweemore. This is a program
00:22for students made by students. We've got so much in store for you, from making healthy,
00:27affordable meals to showing you your next late night binge watch as well as answering any burning
00:31questions students may have, we've got it all here just for you. First this week is Macro Meals where
00:36we show you ways of creating better eating habits around student life. When taking a break from
00:41studying and adulting sometimes a little refreshment goes a long way so Jude Moulton
00:45and Josh Collenbell are here to show you exactly that. Let's see what they made.
00:52Hello and welcome back to Macro Meals. I'm Josh Collenbell and I'm Jude Moulton.
00:57Now Jude we have just had a heat wave and summer is right on our doorstep so do you have
01:01anything
01:02that is both refreshing and tasty that we can make at home? Well I have the best thing for you
01:06and everyone at home, a summer fruit smoothie. Let's see how we make it. First we grab our ingredients.
01:14All we need is some ice, berries, sugar and water. Grab your ice and crush it down. Put it into
01:22your
01:22blender followed by some berries or any fruit that you want to add. Then add three teaspoons of sugar.
01:31Finally a dash of water and it's ready to blend. And blend it until your desired consistency.
01:39Finally serve in some glasses and you'll have a lovely smoothie to drink.
01:45And here we have the final product.
01:51It looks good Jude but there is one thing you are definitely missing.
02:07Now Jude that is much better. I definitely agree with you there but that's been this
02:12week's Macromouse. We'll see you in a bit.
02:26Next is this week's Digital Gems where we spotlight some series filmed and produced right here in Kent.
02:32This week I'm joined by James Connolly here to speak about a crime sitcom he recently watched
02:36looking at the life of a crime scene cleaner. Let's hear his thoughts on it.
02:47So James what show are you spotlighting for us this week?
02:51Well this week I'm sharing my thoughts on season one of The Cleaner by the BBC and it stars the
02:56much
02:57beloved actor and comedian Greg Davies as the main character in the show and it's directed by great
03:02talents Tom Marshall and Alex Winkler with Dominic Brigstock joining for the later seasons and this
03:07show is filmed here in the county of Kent a lot of the western districts such as Sevenoaks, Maidstone
03:13and Tunbridge Wells. Can you give me a quick rundown of The Cleaner? Yeah sure so it's quite a short
03:19season only six episodes and it's a comedy crime series about a crime scene cleaner who goes to houses
03:25to clean up the messes of crime scenes and he ends up meeting some very peculiar individuals at these
03:30houses such as suspects culprits and witnesses to said crimes. The show uses lots of stereotypical dry
03:37British humour into its storytelling and brings you into the core of every single criminal case straight
03:43into the episode which juxtaposes the audience's expectations with you know comedic timings and the
03:48deliveries of these lines. Do you have any fun bits of trivia about the show? Yes so like I said
03:55it is
03:56filmed in Kent but a lot of viewers might not be aware that a lot of the scenes are filmed
04:00indoors in private residences according to Kent Film Office and they are done mainly in Sevenoaks.
04:06This unknown fact explains why all the sets and the scenes feel so familiar and relatable
04:10and they're not too extravagant. Can you tell us a bit more about the cost?
04:15Yes so the structure of the show has a famous celebrity or comedian or another well-known performer
04:21in every single episode. They're often the criminal or they are involved with the criminal case or they're
04:26sometimes the cause of the need of the clean-up. In the opening first episode The Widow you have the
04:32powerhouse actress Helena Bonham Carter star alongside Davies and her deadpanness of her lines elevates
04:38the scenes that should really be serious situations into a much more comical performance shared with the
04:44cleaner Vicky. What did you enjoy about the show and who would you recommend it to?
04:49Well I really enjoy the simple structure of the show and the concept of covering up you know these
04:54crime scenes is you know it's not really done in many darker crime shows. Using the lens of the
05:00cleaner Vicky as someone that's not really caring about his job doesn't really care about the criminal
05:05cases is a good opportunity for it to be much more funny. As a student in Kent you know it's
05:10filmed near
05:10me it's near Sevenoaks near Maidstone Tunbridge Wells so I'm more interested to be watching it and taking part
05:16and viewing it. A lot of the comedy isn't really direct it's more about situational and it uses
05:22stuff from the actors performances which is helped by the top behaviours from the guest appearances
05:29actors and actresses all throughout the season. Thank you so much for joining me today James.
05:41Next up is this week's KMTV Cribs where we spotlight the many ways students decorate their living
05:46spaces and why. So this week we visit Rhys Tamza, a computer science student at the University of
05:52Greenwich to see how he's made the most of his home. Let's take a look.
06:08Hi there I'm Rhys, I'm a computer science student at University of Greenwich. Welcome to my crib.
06:14So I just finished my second year on my course and I've been living at home throughout the duration of
06:20my time at uni. I find this is easier because it's a lot cheaper you know I don't have to
06:24pay
06:25rent or anything and the commute's quite easy. I can just get one train. So I like to keep my
06:32room
06:33decorations to a minimum, keep it quite simple. I find I can use it as a space to relieve some
06:39stress
06:39after a long day at uni or work. There's a few football trophies that I collected over the years
06:46when I was a lot younger. On the next shelf I've got pictures of my girlfriend there, the stuffed
06:50animals she got me as well. Okay so this is my desk, this is basically where I do all my
06:55uni work,
06:56like my coursework and that. I also do a lot of, spend a lot of time here working on my
07:01DJ sets which I do
07:03on the side. I research all my music here, find all my music. So I spend a lot of time
07:10here online
07:11with my friends, playing games and that. And also I watch TV here just while laying in bed really
07:19for my free time. As I'm living at home I've got access to a nice kitchen in the house there
07:25which
07:25is nice. You know I don't have to cook for myself. We've also got a nice big lounge in there
07:30with
07:30a big TV. This is my favourite area which is the cabin in the garden. It gives me access to
07:35my dad's
07:36DJ decks. So this is where I practice all my music. Thanks for coming to my crib. This has been
07:41this
07:41week's KMTV Cribs. See you later.
07:55And finally, so you've come to the end of your year at university and now you're looking to move
08:00out of accommodation. But where to start? In this week's Student 101 Support, Marcellus Almazar is
08:05here with me to speak about some tips and tricks on moving out. As the end of the academic year
08:17approaches, what can students do to prepare to move out? You know, just like moving in, you should make
08:22a checklist for moving out. It helps you keep organised, you know, keeping that you're making
08:27sure you're doing the right things. You're not leaving anything behind because it's really easy
08:31to accidentally forget something. And one thing that would help not forgetting anything is making
08:37sure not to do it all in one night. It's so easy to kind of neglect it and leave it
08:41all in the last day.
08:42But I think really try to space out over maybe a few days. One day do your kitchen stuff, the
08:48other day
08:48pack away your clothes and making sure that when you're packing things, it's in the appropriate place.
08:53Your boxes are well labelled, your luggages are well organised, because it also helps. You're not
09:01just packing your things away, you're making sure that when you're going home, it's easy to pack up
09:06and put back in your room. One tip that I would say is that not to buy something, your box
09:12too large.
09:13And you know, sometimes it feels like a bargain getting one big box rather than three medium sized ones.
09:19But it's very easy to forget that once you've filled it up to the brim, it's really hard to carry.
09:25And what's the point of a box in your room that you can't move around? And I think for international
09:30students, making sure that they know what their prep looks like. If they're needing a storage unit,
09:36that they have one in order, that they know the trip there. Who's driving you? Do you need a storage
09:43van?
09:44And also making yourself familiar with the space. You know how much you need to pack and what things
09:49you can keep there. And also don't forget your keys. It's so easy to forget. And also the procedure is
09:54different from landlord to accommodation. You know, some people require that you put it, keep it in the
09:59house. Some people require that you mail it to your letting agent and also knowing when your lease ends.
10:06Speaking of leases, with the new renters rights introduced in May, what do students need to know?
10:11Well, what's really interesting is that it does not affect PBSAs. Do you know what a PBSA is?
10:16No. Could you tell me a bit more about that?
10:18So it's a purpose-built student ACOM. So this is your on-campus halls. This is your off-campus
10:23halls, basically anything built specifically for students that kind of looks like a flat.
10:27So your renters rights only really affect those housing that's private rented sector. So it's kind
10:33of, you've got your own room, but you're sharing a bathroom or a kitchen. And this was implemented
10:39from May 1st. And this says that rolling contracts are now the standard. So your contracts no longer
10:45end until either you or your landlord agrees upon it. And also what's really important to note for
10:52this year's students is that even if you were originally on a fixed term tenancy, that all of it
10:57has automatically become rolling on. So make sure to check with your landlord. And there's so much
11:02more things that have changed. So make sure to check gov.uk for more information about
11:07your renters rights.
11:08Thank you so much for joining me today, Marcellus.
