Seth and B-Scott discuss something good Dalton Schultz had to say about the direction of the offensive line. Are they getting *gasp* SWARMier???
Transcript
00:00Is the Texans offensive line getting swarmier?
00:04Somewhat of a theme of today's show is a lot of the positive press that we're hearing out of NRG
00:10lately.
00:10I guess they're not calling it NRG right now, but y'all understand what I'm talking about.
00:14Yeah, that's annoying me. It's not official until August 1st or something.
00:18Yeah, well a couple things. It's not officially back to relying until a certain date,
00:24but then also we got this World Cup stuff happening too, and so we're not supposed to call it that.
00:29And I'm like, look, man, I understand the world really to work one way, and y'all is confusing me,
00:36man.
00:36You're not Prince, okay?
00:38Come on now.
00:39Stadium, you don't get to just change it whenever you feel like it.
00:42Yeah, sorry, I misspoke. It's going to go back to Reliant on August 1st or somewhere thereabouts.
00:48But that's no less than two changes within a couple of months, you know what I mean,
00:54of trying to figure out what they ought to call the stadium.
00:56But either way, a lot of positive press coming out of the building, coming out of the facility, if you
01:01will,
01:02whether it be C.J. Stroud, whether it be the offense as a whole, the offensive operation as a whole,
01:10even Nick Cayley, we've talked about him.
01:13But the offensive line is one that really piqued my interest,
01:17and that's really because I asked Dalton Schultz a question about him,
01:20him being a tight end and an extension of the offensive line and all of that.
01:24And I've said for a while, Seth, that I want the offense to take the attitude of the defense.
01:32I feel like that's the next step for them, for us to talk about them in a simple, warm kind
01:39of way
01:39as we do with the defense.
01:41And we just have not been able to do that over the last couple of years,
01:44which is why I enjoyed hearing this answer from Dalton Schultz
01:49when I asked about his observations on the new guys on the Texans' offensive line.
01:55I think first and foremost, like, run blocking is about, like, mindset.
01:59Like, mindset and then technique.
02:01Like, are you willing to put your face in there?
02:03Are you willing to, like, fire off the ball and honestly be willing to miss sometimes?
02:07Like, are you willing to just take off and run through a guy?
02:11And I think from the new faces that we have and the new guys that we brought in,
02:15like, that's the first thing that's jumped out to me is just the mindset.
02:20Like, I think D'Amico threw a few clips on in the first week of, like,
02:24pulling some of the O-line back saying, like, hey, like, we can't, you know,
02:29on pass blocking, we can't go clean out, like, a DN who's just kind of sitting there holding up.
02:34We had, you know, guys flying around trying to hit people.
02:38And so I think, you know, just that, from that mindset, like,
02:42that's a problem that we hadn't necessarily had for the last couple years.
02:45And that's something that jumped out, like, immediately.
02:48Like, having to pull guys back and be like, hey, like, slow down.
02:52Which is usually what he's saying to the defense.
02:53So to see it on the offensive side was nice.
02:57But, yeah, man, I think at the end of the day, like, it's all here.
03:00And I think we got the guys for it.
03:01This is a good problem to have, Seth.
03:03What say you?
03:04Yeah, you know what it sounds like?
03:07It sounds like the offense is going through puberty.
03:10It's like, you know, all of a sudden they got some testosterone coursing through their veins.
03:15And, you know, you wonder why your kid's acting up or he got a fight at the bus stop or
03:21something.
03:21Like, oh, yeah, yeah.
03:22He doesn't know how to handle.
03:24He doesn't know how to handle all of this aggression and these feelings that he's having.
03:28So he's lashing out.
03:29And that's what it sounds like with the offense.
03:31The offense is just, they're starting to get violent tendencies for the first time in their life.
03:37It's a critical moment.
03:38And D'Amico understands this.
03:39He's stepping in.
03:41And he's being sure, hey, violence is good, but within the rules, okay?
03:44Don't be doing this during OTAs.
03:46And from a defensive lineman's perspective, what Schultz was talking about there was like, okay, guard doesn't have any to
03:53block.
03:54He sees that the offensive tackle is occupied with the defensive end.
03:58So in no pads he goes out and hits the defensive end in the ribs.
04:03That's dirty pool, man.
04:04That's dirty pool.
04:04D'Amico was right to call it out.
04:06But I respect that you, I respect your gangsta.
04:09You're at least, you're at least showing some violence or something.
04:13Before, if you weren't, if you didn't have anybody to block, you were just sitting there thinking about what you
04:17were going to post on Instagram later in the day.
04:19It's nice to see the Texans offensive line finally had a nudge drop, if I'm allowed to say something like
04:25that.
04:26Because that's what it feels like.
04:28That's what it feels like.
04:29The edge, right, that is kind of to Dalton Schultz's point here, the offensive line has always lacked a certain
04:38edge to it.
04:39Even when it had competent guys or when they had Pro Bowl guys or whatever the case, well-paid guys,
04:46highly drafted guys, what it did not have felt like at least was a certain edge to it.
04:52And even if that is dirty pool, as you described it, there's something about that that I'm kind of risking
04:58to really do that to their own guys, really.
05:00But if they can just have a little bit more of an edge to them, if I can see a
05:04little bit more of a twinkle in that eye to feel like, man, something ain't right about these guys.
05:08But in the rightest of ways, right?
05:11Yeah, it's the equivalent of like a defensive back that you got to really work with them on not leading
05:17with a helmet.
05:18You know, you got to make everything clean and legal, but it's better to have that problem than to have
05:24a Ferdinand the Bull type of character that just wants to pick flowers all day.
05:29I feel like they had a lot of daisy, like they had a lot of dudes on the offense in
05:34previous years that would have rather been sitting in a field staring at daisies more so than just, you know,
05:40wreaking havoc on people.
05:41Yeah, like just having that lack of, we just had a text right as you said that from the 3
05:49-4-6, come a long way from skinny jeans.
05:53Yeah.
05:53As a skid, look, I'm obviously not an offensive lineman.
05:57As an actual skinny guy himself who wears skinny jeans, I can even say that I can appreciate the skinny
06:05jeans era feeling like it's officially over here in Houston for the offensive line, at least.
06:10There is something about a fashion-forward offensive lineman that really pisses people off, and with good reason.
06:16Part of it is because you're like, man, you're only getting away with that because you're rich.
06:21Like, you know, you don't walk in here looking like some broke-ass James Corden and act like, you know,
06:27all of a sudden you're a fashionista.
06:30You're just rich, okay?
06:32Let go of it and just get back to just, they used to call them big uglies, okay?
06:38The exact opposite of that.
06:39I'm trying too hard.
06:41I also feel like there is a fair gap between stylish and looking good and being, let's say, a fat
06:53guy or a bigger guy wearing skinny jeans.
06:56Right.
06:57Or, honestly, what some of fashion looks like today or what, you know, the cutting edge of fashion looks like.
07:03Right, because even now it's getting back towards super baggy.
07:06But, likewise, I don't want to see obnoxiously baggy jeans on my offensive lineman either.
07:12I just want you to wear, I want you to look like you're a mannequin at Target, okay?
07:18Yes, exactly.
07:18That's all I need out of you.
07:20We're a regular-ass outfit.
07:22Yeah.
07:22I want your outfit.
07:24A regular, yeah, it could be nice clothes but a regular-ass.
07:26It could be a $5,000 suit, but just, like, make it look like you're my banker or something.
07:33Yeah.
07:33Yeah.
07:33Or, if your outfit costs $32, $35, I'm not mad at you.
07:39That's better.
07:39No, that's better, yeah.
07:40You know what I mean?
07:41I'm good with it.
07:42I'm good with it.
07:43So, I can definitely appreciate that.
07:46Taking a look at the –
07:46That's what –
07:47Go ahead.
07:48Go ahead.
07:48No, go ahead.
07:49Sorry.
07:49I was just going to say, taking a look at the offensive line, man, really from end to end, you
07:54can see where that nastiness shows up, right?
07:58Like, Ariante Ursary, even with all of his struggles or ups and downs, you might – I want to say
08:02struggles because he actually –
08:03Had a decent year.
08:04But the up-and-down nature of being a rookie offensive lineman, even with that, the one thing I didn't
08:10question with old buddy was the attitude, the mentality, and the approach.
08:16That seemed true to this guy that if he's not a road grader yet, he definitely seems to have the
08:23spirit of one, like he's – like he could be a road grader in the making.
08:26You know who the ideal is in this draft class, and it was on the defensive side of the ball?
08:32Reuben Bain.
08:34Whenever he saw an interview with Reuben Bain, his hair was all just out of control.
08:40He looked like a guy that spends his entire life trying to exact vengeance on people who have said his
08:47arms are too short.
08:48It looks like he doesn't care about anything in the world except playing football.
08:52And then, like, there's certain – on the offensive line, it goes double or triple that.
08:57And, yeah, the Texans haven't had that.
08:58Yeah, not at all.
09:00But, again, like what they did and bringing back – you know what they –
09:04No, Ingram's – yeah, Ingram's nasty.
09:06They said, hey, look, the one – we obviously drafted a guy that we like in Ariante Ursery.
09:11Let's put him to the side for a second.
09:12He's, of course, coming back.
09:13But outside of that, the one guy who is – and, of course, they bring back Trent Brown as well.
09:19But we want to bring back our swarmiest guys, okay?
09:24Either we're going to trade or release or do whatever we need to do with the rest of the guys,
09:28kind of the excess that we have around here at this point.
09:31But what we really want to do is bring back our swarmiest guys
09:35and bring in guys who are at least as swarmy, if not more so.
09:41And that's what we got.
09:43They bring in Braden Smith.
09:45They bring in Wyatt Teller.
09:47And they re-sign – bring back, I should say, Ed Ingram.
09:51And now all of a sudden it feels like you've got that good problem of, hey, there's a little bit
09:59off about these guys
10:00and you didn't always feel that way before.
10:01Yeah, the Jalen Petrie guardian cap is a good – he just looks a little bit off, you know.
10:07I think the – so then the next step – and really for the offensive line,
10:11one of the pre-snap things that D'Amico's been talking about is just the pre-snap penalties.
10:19I think we've been thinking about it in the context of CJ and the play clock
10:23and getting all of the motions and everything set.
10:25But for me, I just – I usually, as a quarterback, becomes a veteran quarterback.
10:32Ultimately, the quarterback's the guy that's got to be sure that they have a pre – a clean operation pre
10:37-snap.
10:37So when it comes to false starts on the offensive line or guys lining up illegally,
10:44like all of those types of things.
10:46I was talking about this the other day and somebody said,
10:49well, how come – you know, are you blaming CJ for Laramie Tunsil and his pre-snap issues?
10:54No, because CJ was a young quarterback.
10:57But if it were now and later and Laramie Tunsil were still doing that, yeah, I would say,
11:03look, man, that's not – that's on the quarterback.
11:05Like, you've got pre-snap operations.
11:07That's on the quarterback.
11:08He's got to be the absolute, like, conductor of everything that goes on in the offense.
11:15And the pre-snap communication, the play clock, all of that, it just – it creates an environment
11:20and you've got to have expectations from your quarterback that you're not going to screw this stuff up.
11:24Like, none of these ten other guys are going to screw it up and be in command and in control
11:28of it.
11:29What about Keelan Rutledge?
11:32That's one guy who looks like he doesn't give a damn about what it looks like or what his hair
11:40looks like.
11:42Somebody pointed out on the text line from the 8-3-2, Rutledge said that he barely even has clothes.
11:48Right, yeah.
11:48The guy just has just enough clothes to not get in trouble.
11:51He's got one pair of khakis, I think, because they were talking – he doesn't own a suit.
11:56When the Texans did the video of him arriving, you know, in a private jet, you know, in the Texans'
12:02private jet,
12:03he's got one or two pairs of khakis.
12:06He wore – what did he wear?
12:08She said he wore something to their wedding.
12:10I can't remember.
12:11Jeans at his wedding, I think.
12:12Dude.
12:13Yeah, yeah, no, he's 100% like that.
12:15When Joel Batonio retired yesterday, I just saw a couple little clips of it, and I'm like, oh, yeah.
12:21Look at that big, fat, sloppy bastard.
12:23Good for him.
12:24That's an offensive lineman.
12:27That's a – you know what that is?
12:29That's a dog.
12:30Yeah.
12:30You know, Laramie used to call people dogs like every single person he'd talk about was a dog.
12:34Davis Mills is a dog.
12:35This guy's a dog.
12:36That guy's a dog.
12:37No, on the offensive lineman – on the offensive line, it's a – no, no, no.
12:41That dude right there where he just – he looks like he doesn't care about anything except maybe his family
12:47and football.
12:47That's a dog on the offensive line.
12:49You want your offensive lineman to be good.
12:51You want them to be talented.
12:53But from a mentality standpoint, you do want the offensive lineman who, if they get a stain on their shirt,
12:59they don't notice it.
13:00Yeah.
13:01And certainly they're not going to change their shirt because they have a stain on it because, again, they don't
13:04notice it's there.
13:05If they get food in their beard, if they have beards, if they get food in the beard, they don't
13:09notice that either.
13:10Or are they bothered by that?
13:11Like, just little small stuff like that.
13:13Like, this guy is okay with having a day-old Cheeto on the side of the tee, and that's not
13:19going to bother him.
13:20The guy that gets – when you get away with it, you've got to be a guy like Trent Williams.
13:24Because every time I see Trent Williams, he's pretty well put together, you know.
13:27He's – but he looks like – like, in a way that you want your offensive lineman to.
13:31But an actual dog, too.
13:32He's got, like, a badass big sweater, and his shoulders look like they're three kilometers wide.
13:38You know, and he's also one of the most effective and violent guys in the NFL.
13:44So, like, okay, that's good.
13:46That's what I want out of my offensive lineman.
13:48Yeah.
13:48Now, people are pointing out that the one thing that Keelan Rutledge does care about, apparently, is his fade and
13:54his edge up.
13:55And I just attribute that to spending some time in the Atlanta area.
13:59Yeah.
14:00I think that's part of it.
14:01I think – and there's nothing wrong with that.
14:03I can appreciate a good fade and just not caring about the rest of the stuff.
14:08But a good lineup.
14:09I went to the barbershop yesterday.
14:10A good lineup.
14:11Well, yeah, no, there's a little bit, though, too, of just kind of also the assimilation that happens between –
14:17like, he – that's cool.
14:19That's cool.
14:20Yeah.
14:20Yesterday, I thought when Derek Stingley answered about Reed Blankenship, they said – they asked how it was going.
14:26He said, yeah, and then, you know, he's cool hanging out.
14:29He doesn't seem awkward or anything.
14:30And I'm like, yep.
14:32I'm like – it's a – yeah, yeah, he's cool.
14:37He'll be just fine.
14:39Yeah.
14:39Yeah.
14:39Sounds about right.
14:42No, sometimes – so I thought – I thought immediately when I tried to interview those guys, I was going
14:48to interview just Kamari Lasseter at the Pro Bowl.
14:50But Kalen Bullock and Stingley and him and who else were all out there in one group.
14:57And I was like, how about all of you at once?
15:00And I was like, man, I never felt more like a boomer.
15:02I could – just – I got – they gave me a pause at least on my first two questions.
15:08And I just – I was not – I felt awkward.
15:11I felt awkward.
15:12Yeah.
15:12Well, I mean, meeting Caden McDonald, man, you know, I'm not even 40 yet.
15:17But I'm meeting Caden McDonald realizing that, man, this kid was born when I was in high school.
15:22Like, I was in the 10th grade.
15:23I remember where I was when the kid was born.
15:25I was at Yates High School causing up all kind of ruckus.
15:28And he seems like – he seems like a big kid.
15:31Caden McDonald seems like a big kid, doesn't he?
15:34Yeah.
15:34Like a kid – like not a large kid.
15:38Just he's like a – he's a big kid.
15:40No.
15:40When I met him, we were at a – like a memorabilia place, a coins and card trading type of
15:47thing.
15:47And they had all kind of cool little artifacts in there, signed memorabilia.
15:52And there was like a $10,000 bill.
15:55And we were – he and I both.
15:57And he's much younger than I am, but both felt like kids in a candy store.
16:01Like, oh, wow.
16:02Look at all these shiny, cool things.
16:04So that was a pretty cool thing.
16:05But, yes, a swarmier Texans offensive line.
16:09Put that on my offseason wish list.
16:11And it looks like we're getting a chance to see that.
16:13And it looks like we're getting a chance to see that.
