00:00Carmelo Anthony, the Texas teen on trial for the killing of high school football star Austin
00:04Metcalfe, sobbed on Tuesday as a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. He was sentenced
00:09to 35 years behind bars, but will be eligible for parole after he serves just half that time.
00:15Now, race became a big part of this story. Anthony is black and Metcalfe was white. Add to that the
00:22fact that the 12 jurors and six alternates were all white, Hispanic, and Asian without a single
00:27black juror, and you have a powder keg of racial tension. But the no-nonsense judge in the case
00:32refused to let the media circus around all that tension leak into the trial. He held proceedings
00:37in a tiny room with only 27 public seats, turning away dozens of streamers, true crime buffs, and
00:44protesters who waited all night outside the courthouse. He also overruled an objection from
00:50Anthony's team after prosecutors dismissed black jury candidates, siding with the prosecution,
00:54which claimed the case was, quote, race neutral. The prosecution and defense pretty much avoided
01:00the subject of race when they questioned witnesses. But outside of the courtroom, well, that's a
01:05different story. Protesters on both sides of the case were largely split down racial lines and spent
01:10the trial trading barbs. But luckily, as of Tuesday evening, nothing more serious than that.
