00:01The United States and Iran traded attacks after the downing of an American helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
00:10The European Commission has proposed new sanctions against Russia targeting oil revenues, shadow fleets and soldiers.
00:22Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan sounded alerts and fired air defenses early on Wednesday as the United States and Iran traded
00:29attacks after the downing of an American helicopter a day earlier.
00:34Jordan said it shot down five incoming missiles launched by Iran targeting an area that's home to an airbase that
00:40hosts U.S. forces.
00:43Tehran had vowed to respond after the U.S. launched airstrikes on Iran, accusing it of shooting down an army
00:49helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
00:52Iranian media reported at least two series of explosions along Iran's southern coast near the Strait.
00:59Later, U.S. Central Command said in a post on X that it had completed so-called self-defense strikes
01:04against Iran,
01:05adding that U.S. forces struck Iranian air defense, ground control stations and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of
01:12Hormuz.
01:14Before he accused Iran of downing the U.S. helicopter, Trump had expressed renewed optimism over negotiations with Iran, without
01:21elaborating.
01:23Officials have been unable to turn the April ceasefire into a deal to permanently end the conflict,
01:28particularly as Israel intensifies and expands its military campaign in Lebanon against the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah.
01:42The European Commission has proposed new sanctions against Russia,
01:47targeting oil revenues, shadow fleets, banks, cryptocurrency firms, metals, fish products and soldiers who took part in the full-scale
01:54invasion of Ukraine.
01:56The objective of our package couldn't be clearer.
01:59We want to maintain the full intensity of our sanctions.
02:04And the way to do this is to ensure that Russia's profits from oil sales remain contained.
02:12The main element concerns the price cap on Russian oil that the EU, along with the G7 in Australia, has
02:19implemented since December 2022.
02:21Last year, the mechanism was made dynamic, with the cap set at 15% below the average price.
02:28Yet, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has pushed the price of oil up.
02:32This means that if the EU goes ahead, the cap will be adjusted upwards and it will grant Moscow some
02:38temporary relief.
02:39The Commission proposes to keep the price cap as it is now, at $44.10 per barrel.
02:44In addition, it proposes to blacklist a 30 vessel from the Russian shadow fleet, 31 Russian banks, as well as
02:5120 cryptocurrency firms.
02:53The proposal also plans to deny entry into the Schengen area to Russian soldiers who have served in Russia's war
02:59against Ukraine.
03:00Approval of the sanctions requires unanimity by the 27 member states.
03:05If endorsed, it will represent the 21st package of sanctions since February 2022.
03:12A consortium led by French plane producer Airbus has proposed developing a next-gen fighter jet
03:18after the high-profile German Franco warplane program collapsed.
03:22The move comes a day after German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz and French President Emmanuel Macron
03:28officially ended the original project, following years of disagreements between their country's industrial partners.
03:35Munich-based defense tech company Hentzold said it had joined forces with Airbus and a slew of other companies to
03:41drop an alternative plan.
03:44A spokesperson for the firm said the proposal has been submitted to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Chancellor Mertz.
03:51Pistorius acknowledged the existence of the proposal and said his office was still assessing it,
03:56but praised the stakeholders' continued interest after what he described as a painful breakdown of the previous initiative.
04:02The company said more will be detailed about the future Combat Air System, or FCAS,
04:09and the next-generation weapons system on Thursday at the Berlin ILA Airshow.
04:19The European Commission has warned the Albanian government over a 1.4 billion euros real estate project
04:25linked to U.S. President Donald Trump's family.
04:28Protests over the construction of a luxury coastal resort led by Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner
04:36in a protected Albanian nature reserve have entered the second week.
04:40A European Commission spokesperson urged Tirana to act to avoid jeopardizing the country's bid to join the EU
04:47as accession talks require a candidate country to align with environmental rules.
04:53Albania should refrain from action that could undermine the fulfillment of the closing benchmark,
05:00and we expect the Albanian authorities to act without delay.
05:04The spokesperson added that the Commission has expressed concerns to Albania's Minister of the Environment
05:11about the potential shortcomings of the project,
05:14and that the Minister had assured Brussels that construction work has been suspended.
05:18Albania's Prime Minister Edirama has, however, defended the project,
05:23telling Euronews last Friday that resistance to the plans was part of what he called a, quote,
05:28hybrid war waged by people taking advantage of well-meaning sentiments regarding the environment.
05:40Europe must integrate the single market faster and create a European industrial strategy
05:46before the bloc becomes unable to compete with global superpowers,
05:50former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta told Euronews.
05:53We don't want to be a colony of the US and we don't want to be a colony of China.
05:58We want to be Europeans.
05:59In 2024, Letta published a report on how to complete the single market,
06:05which inspired the EU's roadmap on how to make Europe more competitive.
06:10The report recommended to create an energy union,
06:13integrate digital services and the fragmentation of capital markets
06:17and foster research and innovation.
06:20Letta said that Europe finally seems to be catching up with the imperative to do something.
06:26There was an acceleration in the last three months.
06:29The year 25 was a year in which we were all shocked by the new Trump II era,
06:36the tariff wars and the rest.
06:40Then Greenland happened.
06:41I think Greenland was a big wake-up call for all European countries and leaders.
06:47The European Commission recently launched the new strategy
06:51One Europe, One Market to boost European competitiveness.
06:55Proposed reforms include the creation of a strong industrial strategy
06:59and the simplification of business opening processes in Europe.
07:07In Lyon and around France, there is grief and outrage.
07:12Thousands gathered in front of courthouses to demand justice for Léanna,
07:17an 11-year-old girl murdered in southwest France.
07:21The main suspect, Jérôme Barrela,
07:23has faced multiple complaints for sexual violence against minors going back years.
07:28He was never investigated or questioned until now.
07:31Ce n'est pas un dysfonctionnement d'un tribunal et d'un juge ou un procureur.
07:36C'est l'ensemble du système qui est à revoir en fait.
07:40More than 150 rallies took place across France on Monday,
07:44demanding justice for Léanna and an overhaul of the system
07:48participants say has failed to protect children.
08:17These rallies are demanding answers.
08:21How could a man reported multiple times for sexual violence remain free until a child was killed ?
08:28And what must change so that it never happens again ?
08:32Denis Loctier, Euronews, Lyon.
08:37Rescuers searched ruined buildings in the southern Philippines on Tuesday to ensure no one was still trapped.
08:43A day after one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in half a century killed at least 37
08:49people and displaced more than 20,000.
08:52Many people who left their homes feared a tsunami.
08:55Waves up to 1.4 meters above tide level were measured in the Philippines,
09:00but the only tsunami damage reported was to six shanties on stilts in a coastal village.
09:05The earthquake left a trail of destruction, including in General Santos,
09:10a lively coastal city of more than 700,000 people,
09:14where at least 13 people were killed in collapsed buildings and due to falling debris.
09:18About 2,000 houses and 117 government buildings and facilities were damaged in several provinces,
09:25according to an initial government damage assessment.
09:28Authorities have warned that buildings that sustained cracks could collapse due to aftershocks,
09:33some of them dangerously powerful.
09:37The countdown is almost over.
09:40Across North America, host cities are putting the finishing torches
09:44to preparations for the biggest World Cup in history.
09:49From Kansas to Toronto, officials say security plans are in place.
09:55I think for the world, we want to show off that Kansas City is on the rise,
09:58that we are elevating.
09:59We are, you know, no longer, as we say, a flyover state, we're a fly-to state.
10:03But we also want people in Kansas City to be really proud of this as well.
10:07We hope Kansas Citians and those in the region are really excited to host and show off
10:11and proud that this came to their backyard.
10:13Toronto will host six World Cup games starting this Friday.
10:18Officials in Canada's largest city say they are ready to welcome the world
10:22and are emphasizing its diversity.
10:26Embrace this moment in our city, in our country's history,
10:30and experience all that this opportunity has to offer.
10:34We are ready to welcome the world and we are looking forward to kicking off.
10:38But beyond host cities' preparations and the stadiums,
10:41the focus is also now shifting to the national teams.
10:45On Monday, Mexico's president, Claudia Schoenbaum,
10:48presided over a flagged presentation ceremony for the national team,
10:52three days before the country opens the 2026 FIFA World Cup against South Africa.
11:02Mexico plays host to six national squads in the country,
11:06including the Iranian squad embroidered in a war with the U.S.
11:10Meanwhile, as final preparations enter their last phase,
11:14fans and officials are confronted with some obstacles,
11:18exorbitant ticket prices, U.S. travel bans and visa restrictions.
11:23On Monday, Omar Ahtan, who was said to be the first Somali to referee at the World Cup finals,
11:29was dropped from the list of officials after he was denied entry to the United States.
11:34His entry refusal follows President Donald Trump's visa ban list and restrictions,
11:39including four competing at the World Cup, Haiti, Iran, Senegal and Ivory Coast.
11:45Oh, thank you.
