00:51but these kids aren't sick
00:53no sir they're here to fight
00:54to fight the oldest invasion of all
00:57invasion by disease

01:01to be vaccinated
01:02of course this is Tubby's first vaccination
01:05he won't admit he's afraid
01:07but he is a little worried
01:09well I guess it'll be okay
01:14what do you suppose
01:15this vaccination business is anyway

01:20that must be the needle
01:23boy it sure looks awful sharp
01:26hey I'm not gonna let him
01:27stick that thing into me
01:30it's easy enough to see that Tubby
01:32doesn't quite appreciate
01:33what we're trying to do for him
01:34I think we ought to take things
01:36a little slower right at the start here
01:37and let him in on the idea
01:40explain to him what vaccination really is
01:42and while we're at it
01:44why don't we get the rest of them in too
01:46so they'll understand what's going on
01:47when it's their turn
01:52it's nice of you gentlemen to drop in like this

01:57you see the doctor's going to tell us a little story
02:00a story about vaccination
02:03he's going to show us just what goes on
02:05inside our bodies when we get sick
02:08and how vaccination will help us get all set
02:11to fight off diseases
02:12even before they can sneak up on us
02:15now in the first place
02:17your body is a whole lot of separate parts
02:20all brought together into one wonderfully organized machine
02:24it's like some big city
02:26with a lot of separate buildings or factories
02:29for instance
02:30the heart is the central office
02:33for the distribution of supplies
02:35to the other buildings of the city
02:36and the blood
02:38is really made up of many little workers
02:40which the heart sends to the different factories
02:44come along over here a minute
02:46we'll show you some of these little workers in person
02:48of course we can't show them to you
02:50while they're traveling around in your body
02:52doing their work
02:53but you can see them sitting still
02:55on this glass slide
02:58first we'll spread them out thin
02:59so as to get a good look

03:09now you'll see for yourselves
03:10what we've been talking about
03:12you see what you've always thought
03:14was just a sort of red liquid
03:16that popped out of your finger
03:18when you cut it
03:19is really much more
03:20it's actually millions of little workers
03:23with a job to do
03:25the job of keeping us alive
03:33looks like rags here has a little bloodhound in him
03:36well let's get back to our story of vaccination
03:39and see where we go from here

03:43we're just going to tell you about our veins and arteries
03:47and how they're like the roads and highways of the body
03:50because it's through them
03:52that the little workers get around
03:54to the different organs or factories
03:56and do their jobs
03:57remember we said your body is really like a city

04:02in which everything runs smoothly
04:04and we'll continue to do so
04:05as long as it's left undisturbed
04:09undisturbed by the invader
04:10disease
04:19you see the wall around this city
04:21has a gate
04:22through which supplies of raw materials must be taken
04:27suppose for example
04:28that you're loading up a new stock of groceries
04:30bread and butter
04:31lots of jam on it
04:32ice cream and cake
04:34this busy peaceful city
04:36never heard of the invader
04:37but look
04:38the enemy
04:39it's a deadly disease germ all right
04:41oh but there's only one
04:43what harm can he do
04:44against the millions of little workers
04:48just watch him
04:49suddenly there are two
04:51then four
04:52then there are eight
04:53and more to come
04:54now we understand why diseases are so deadly
04:58it is because they have the power to transform themselves quickly
05:01into gigantic menacing hordes
05:05he doesn't look so harmless now does he
05:09before you know it they multiply themselves into millions
05:13invasion
05:14the alarm is sounded
05:15the workers pour into the supply buildings to arm themselves
05:18but there aren't enough weapons to go around
05:20and it's only with guns that the invaders can be conquered
05:24there is nothing to stop them here because
05:26the body is not prepared
05:29frantically the factories are converted to the manufacture of the all important weapons
05:34but they are far too slow
05:35and as the ranks of the invader multiply with terrifying rapidity
05:39we see that it is already too late
05:51this city is blacked out forever
05:53yet it could have been saved
05:58you see boys
05:59this city
06:00or rather this man
06:02died because his body did not have arms and ammunition
06:06or in other words
06:07powers of resistance against disease
06:10he was not prepared
06:12and he was not prepared
06:14simply because he failed to take advantage
06:16of the greatest weapon against disease
06:19that medical science has to offer
06:22vaccination
06:27great men in all the countries of the world
06:29have struggled year after year
06:31even given their lives in order that we might live

06:37and many others have worked to create this harmless little fellow
06:41who will protect us
06:45he doesn't look like much does he
06:47but wait until you see what he can do for us
06:50first we have to get him into the body
06:52and that's where vaccination plays its part

06:59an ordinary point like a darning needle

07:04letting in a few of the little helpers
07:10but the lookouts inside the body
07:12do not know that these little fellows are harmless
07:14they see their wall being attacked

07:18and to them it's a real invasion
07:20and the army marches forth to battle
07:22but in this case there's nothing to fear
07:24from the weak make-believe invaders
07:28nevertheless the factories of the body immediately go on an all-out wartime basis
07:32production zooms steadily upward
07:34but this time the armies of the body are winning
07:37and the war plants have all the time they need to produce arms and ammunition
07:41they work day and night seven days a week
07:4424 hours a day building the weapons to fight disease
07:48meanwhile the soldiers are easily routing the harmless artificial invaders
07:53and soon the battle is completely won
07:55but look at the tremendous supply of arms and ammunition
07:59that the body has made for itself because of vaccination
08:08we're ready for the invader
08:10let him come
08:13now suppose you should catch some deadly disease
08:15right out of the air itself
08:17because eating isn't the only way the invaders can enter
08:20they fly around on tiny dust particles
08:23or little drops of moisture
08:25they're apt to be all around us

08:29but if you've been vaccinated
08:31you don't have to worry
08:32because your body is prepared against the invader
08:35no matter which way he chooses to enter

08:39airborne troops launching their deadly attack

08:46they've got a real surprise in store for them this time

09:25moving into battle, equipped with the deadly weapons
09:27that they have built up through vaccination.

09:56Look, our fighters are landing through the invaders,
09:59slashing them to ribbons.

10:05to overcome the deadly disease germs.
10:09On every hand, we see brilliant examples of military strategy.
10:19The death rattle of the vaccine gun is heard on all sides.
10:24Backed up by the dull roar of the germ bomber, on they come.
10:29And now the paratroops, most up-to-date of all fighting men.
10:34Watch them take over behind the lines,
10:37highly trained by vaccination
10:38in all the tricks of modern warfare against disease.
10:46They throw open a decisive wedge,
10:49into which rush the overwhelming and victorious army.
10:54victorious because they have arms and ammunition.

11:06Now we'll get a chance to see just what vaccination really is.
11:11The vaccine, or as we have shown it, the little helpers,
11:14comes in a glass tube.
11:18We clean the tube with alcohol,
11:20and then we clean the arm.
11:26Next, we break the tube to allow the vaccine to come out.
11:33Then, we put a drop on the arm
11:35and painlessly press it,
11:37not scratch it,
11:38into the skin.
11:40That lets the little fellas in.
11:42And that's all there is to it.
11:44Well, okay, what are we waiting for?
11:47Shucks, he knew there wasn't anything to it all the time.

11:52Start building those jeeps.
