00:11I am water, friend to mankind, friend to every living creature.
00:17I am power roaring, thundering, filling lakes and mighty oceans.
00:22I am clouds and mists and rivers.
00:26I am dew that sparkles flowers.
00:30Tumbling down like molten silver, ever-moving, ever-growing.
00:35Gliding slow through shade and sunlight, over dazzling whites of sand bars, under burnished
00:43green of forest, swirling round in glistening whirlpools, bringing light to all the world.
00:52Round the earth where I have wandered, man has made his home beside me.
00:57Made his home so I may serve him, quench his thirst, and grow his harvest.
01:06And as man has built beside me, he has found me many uses.
01:11Now must I refresh and save him, wash and cleanse his dirty garments.
01:16Fetch him pure and healthy water, carry refuge from his billy.
01:23But I cannot serve him both ways, for the refuge that I carry makes me now unfit for drinking,
01:31slow and sluggish, filled with poison.
01:37Bringing death, bringing death instead of life.
01:46Thirsting three, I race and tumble over four, down rushing rapid,
01:52squirreling madly, whispering, turning, over rocks, and filtering sandbars.
02:08Thus I am carried to their table, bringing death and sickness with me.
02:14I, who should be pure and stainless, am a foul and stealthy killer.
02:19It is I who cause these empty chairs.
02:24Man has forced me to leave murderers, they are not of my designing.
02:29Forced me by his careless action, made of me a common carrier, carrier of death.
02:37Yet these deaths were really needless.
02:43Men of knowledge have discovered ways to test and to protect me.
02:48Sanitary engineers have given a lifetime of study to the problems of keeping me pure.
02:56When I am taken from rivers, streams, or ponds for drinking purposes, I am always dangerous.
03:04It is best to take me from an underground source, such as this in Viking Springs.
03:10I am pure as I flow into it, but if retten some dust containing germs from human waste fall in
03:17or drain in during wet weather,
03:21I may become the source of sickness and death.
03:26Now, the first step in safeguarding me is to dig back into the spring.
03:32Next, install a simple water-type housing of rock, concrete, or even wood.
03:39A trough or pipe with spout turned downward will let me out, but will not let contamination in.
03:53Isn't it worth this little effort to know that I am pure and clean, safe for all who drink me?
04:02The problems involved in keeping me pure in this well are much the same as those concerning the spring.
04:10There is always danger from dust and debris containing deadly germs from human waste.
04:19Suppose I should be carelessly still when taken from the well and see what happens when it rains.
04:36To divert drainage, bank the dirt off like this.
04:42To protect from seepage, the lining should be rebuilt.
04:49And a layer of clay, six inches thick, rammed and packed solidly around it to a depth of ten feet.
04:58Because of the rule, when I filter through to that depth, I become purified.
05:04Even the rope and bucket may be contaminated by handling.
05:17To avoid contact with human hands, a simple tripping mechanism will empty the bucket automatically.
05:33To prevent deadly disease germs from falling into the well,
05:37cover it with a dust and insect-type housing.
05:44Thus, by the use of materials which are easily available to you,
05:49I can be transformed from a possible enemy
05:52into a true friend and faithful servant.
05:57Of course, the concrete well with pump instead of bucket is best of all.
06:02The upper ten feet of lining is of concrete, thus ensuring permanent proof against seepies.
06:10The well is covered by a concrete slab with water-tight joints.
06:15The pump is securely bolted down, completely sealing the well,
06:19which is now protected from all the common sources of pollution.
06:30In the driven well, with its metal casing,
06:34we do not have the problem of seepage, but it too must be sealed.
06:39The casing should be surrounded by a concrete apron
06:42to which the pump is bolted.
06:47In all cases where pumps require climbing,
06:51keep the supply of water for that purpose protected from contamination.
06:56Surely it isn't difficult to choose between danger, sickness, even death,
07:02and life, health, and safety.
07:06Remember, human waste is the most deadly source of contamination.
07:12Your outhouse must always be placed at a safe distance from the well.
07:20Although you may have thoroughly protected your well or spring,
07:24there's a chance it may be situated in a rock formation, such as limestone.
07:31In that case, I may travel long distances underground, carrying death.
07:47You cannot be sure of what you cannot see.
07:52To be certain that I am free of the deadly diseases,
07:56typhoid, cholera, and dysentery,
07:58take me to your local health department.
08:05They'll gladly tell you if I am pure and take the drink.
08:10And if there is ever any question, any doubt as to my safety,
08:15you need only heat and boil me.
08:18If you listen to me closely, you'll hear me softly singing.
08:21Singing now because I'm happy,
08:24for I know that fire fringes driving death and sorrow from me.
08:30Then keep me clean and covered you.
08:33And instead of bringing sorrow, I'll bring you health and laughter.
08:39I will always truly serve you.
08:42Friends to you and yours forever.
08:45Friends to all the world.
08:48Friends to all the world.
