00:00Because speaking of your Houston Astros,
00:02the guy who has taken the absolute most beatings this year,
00:07not named Brian Abreu, has been Dana Brown.
00:12Or Burroughs?
00:13Yeah, Dana Brown has gotten the most beatings
00:17because fans are angry with what they feel was
00:21a roster with a lot of holes in it.
00:24And Dana has this penchant for maybe speaking out of turn,
00:31saying things like,
00:34Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker are going to be Astros for life.
00:37About that.
00:40Hey, you know, we're going to get another deal done.
00:45About that.
00:48And look, part of the issue is,
00:50you know he's handcuffed by how much money he's allowed to spend.
00:53And a boss who's very involved.
00:57And the Astros didn't have a whole lot of money they were able to use.
01:01They had a kind of work margins.
01:03And they were going to,
01:05they told you all about how they were going to make trades
01:07off the Major League roster
01:09to bring in other players that they needed.
01:13But none of those things really happened.
01:17But then I decided to take a look and say,
01:20let's go back through the players
01:23that the Astros were linked to in the offseason
01:27that they did not get.
01:30Whether they were going to trade Christian Walker,
01:33whether they were going to trade
01:34Isak Paredes,
01:36whether they were going to sign guys as free agents, right?
01:39Here are some of the players
01:41that the Astros were linked to
01:44in the offseason
01:46and what they've done so far.
01:50Kodai Senga,
01:51starting pitcher for the Mets,
01:52he is 0-4
01:53with a 9 ERA
01:55and he's currently on the IL.
01:58Okay.
01:59Left fielder,
02:00Jaron Duran
02:01is hitting 2-12
02:03with a 2-74
02:05on base
02:06and 6-68 OPS.
02:10Starting pitcher,
02:11Brian Baio,
02:12he is 2-6
02:14with a 6-34 ERA
02:16and has been demoted
02:18to AAA Pawtucket.
02:19It's very encouraging to see.
02:22Alex Bregman
02:23is hitting 2-43
02:25with a 3-27
02:27on base,
02:28a 6-69 OPS.
02:30He has 5 homers
02:31and has been
02:33perhaps the biggest culprit
02:35in all of baseball
02:38in leaving men on base.
02:40It's a breaky bomb.
02:43Justin Verlander.
02:44He is 0-1
02:46with a 12-27 ERA
02:48and on the 60-day IL.
02:51Though he is
02:52potentially coming back
02:53in the next week or two.
02:55He's getting closer.
02:57Hopefully.
02:57I will never wish ill
02:59on Justin Verlander.
03:01Cedric Mullins
03:02is hitting 182
03:04with a 267
03:06on base,
03:08a 561 OPS
03:11and 5 home runs.
03:12Is he with the Rays right now?
03:13Or where is he right now?
03:16The fact that you don't know
03:17where he is right now.
03:18Tells you all you need to know.
03:19Really.
03:20It's...
03:21That is what you need to know.
03:22He is in Tampa.
03:24Good call, Colin.
03:25And you know what he's doing
03:26in Tampa right now?
03:27He's on the IL.
03:28He's sucking.
03:29Oh.
03:31Should be on the IL.
03:32With the sucks.
03:33He's going to be on the IL
03:34with the sucks.
03:36Yeah.
03:37I thought you called them
03:37the pourers or the pourers.
03:39No, I mean,
03:39when you are playing poorly
03:41and you, quote,
03:42go on the IL
03:43with the sucks.
03:45Oh, I got you.
03:45That's your disease.
03:46Yes.
03:46That's your malady.
03:47The injury.
03:47The injury is the sucks.
03:49Okay.
03:50I think we dodged
03:51a lot of bullets there.
03:52We by, I mean,
03:54Dana Brown.
03:54Meanwhile,
03:55they kept Christian Walker
03:56sitting 250
03:57with 16 homers
03:59and now 47 RBI.
04:01They kept
04:02Isak Paredes,
04:03who,
04:04after a slow start,
04:06now has nine homers
04:06and 33 ribs
04:07and he's hit six homers
04:08in the last,
04:09like, week and a half.
04:12And their biggest expenditure
04:13this offseason,
04:14Tatsi Amai,
04:16well,
04:16he's looked a whole lot better
04:18his last three,
04:18four starts.
04:19Settling in.
04:21Is it possible
04:22that the reason
04:24Dana Brown
04:25didn't make
04:26some of these deals,
04:28the reason Dana Brown
04:29didn't sign
04:30some of these guys
04:31because
04:32maybe they just
04:33weren't worth the cost
04:35and he knew that
04:38and to get
04:39the kind of upgrades
04:41that he would have wanted
04:42was more than he was able
04:45or willing to spend.
04:49Sometimes the best deal
04:50is the deal you don't make.
04:54Maybe that's the case here
04:55with Dana Brown?
04:57I am on board
04:59with all of it
04:59except for the Alex Bregman.
05:01I think he's worth it
05:02regardless because of
05:03what he can do
05:04in the postseason
05:05if the Astros get there.
05:06Also, what he means
05:07to the clubhouse
05:08and the fact that
05:09he's got
05:09so much experience
05:11and all of those trips
05:13to the ALCS,
05:14the World Series rings,
05:15all that.
05:15So I do think
05:16he's worth it
05:17and would be worth it
05:19regardless of
05:20what his numbers are.
05:21His value to the Astros
05:23is beyond
05:23whatever the numbers
05:25might tell you
05:25and he's
05:27always going to rise
05:28to the occasion
05:28in the postseason.
05:30So taking that one
05:31out of the equation,
05:32I like the fact
05:34that he is patient
05:35and that very often
05:37when guys might feel
05:39like the seat
05:40is getting warmer,
05:41the temperature
05:41is being turned up,
05:43the heat in your seat
05:45is left on high,
05:46they can get trigger happy,
05:47they can get a little bit
05:48too antsy
05:49and make deals
05:50just for the sake
05:52of looking like
05:53they are working hard
05:55and they're going to
05:56put together
05:56this incredible team.
05:57So regardless
05:58of where these guys
06:00are still midway
06:02through the season-ish,
06:03I do think patience
06:04is a virtue
06:05that is vastly underrated
06:07as a general manager
06:09and yeah,
06:10there's something
06:11to be said
06:12for not making
06:14the deals
06:14even when
06:15everybody else
06:17wants you to.
06:18We know that
06:19coming into the season
06:20they needed a
06:23they really needed
06:24two legitimate
06:26starting pitchers.
06:28they brought in
06:29EMI,
06:30they traded for Burroughs,
06:31Burroughs hasn't worked out.
06:33They don't,
06:34all the depth
06:35they had kind of
06:35behind those guys,
06:37a lot of that
06:38hasn't worked out.
06:40In fact,
06:41they've had to take
06:43Kawhi Tang
06:44out of the bullpen
06:45and move him
06:46into the rotation.
06:48Peter Lambert,
06:49who they actually
06:52released
06:52and then brought back
06:54on a minor league deal,
06:55he's in the rotation.
06:58the best option
06:59for them
07:00in-house
07:01might be
07:01to send A.J.
07:02Blue Ball
07:03down AAA
07:03and stretch him out
07:05to make him
07:05a starter again.
07:07It's
07:08it's a hole
07:09they can't fill
07:10from within.
07:12They needed
07:13another bullpen
07:14leverage arm.
07:15They didn't get one
07:17and then Brian Abreu
07:19has decided
07:20to just vomit
07:21all over himself.
07:22I'm sure he decided
07:23that specifically.
07:24With intent,
07:25Amy,
07:26with intent.
07:28And
07:29in reality,
07:30they've
07:32you know,
07:33I mean,
07:33not having Hayter
07:34and then Abreu
07:35pitching so poorly
07:37has been a
07:38strain on that bullpen.
07:40He did an outfielder
07:42with a track record
07:44of hitting.
07:45They went with
07:47Jake Myers
07:48who's
07:48never really been
07:50much of a hitter
07:50and then got hurt.
07:52And a lot of young guys
07:53who had a lot to prove
07:54and unfortunately
07:56either didn't prove it
07:57or didn't stay healthy.
07:59They still need those things.
08:02But
08:03I also feel that
08:06not getting them
08:07because you didn't
08:08want to
08:10pay through the nose
08:11to get them
08:13or because the guys
08:14that you could get
08:16weren't really going
08:17to be an upgrade
08:18or do anything
08:19for you.
08:19You don't want to
08:20give up assets
08:21to get guys
08:21that weren't going
08:22to move the needle.
08:23I understand that too.
08:25And I think if
08:26the Astros
08:26didn't get off
08:27to such a slow start
08:28because of all the injuries
08:29and some underperformance,
08:31it wouldn't,
08:32fans wouldn't be
08:33so up in arms about it.
08:35But because they get off
08:36to the slow start
08:37and because there's
08:37seven games under .500
08:39that every
08:41ding on the roster
08:42is super magnified
08:44with all the injuries
08:45and
08:46maybe if we peel
08:47the onion back
08:48a little bit
08:50there wasn't really
08:51a whole lot of places
08:52for Dana to go
08:54to make these adjustments.
08:56People don't know
08:57well, why hasn't he
08:58made a trade yet?
08:59Well, because it's
08:59the second week of June
09:01and generally
09:02teams are not looking
09:04to make
09:04impact deals,
09:06teams aren't looking
09:07to sell players
09:08who can be
09:09impact players
09:11now when they can
09:12try to cause
09:12a bidding war
09:13at the end of July.
09:16That and,
09:17you know,
09:17in the National League,
09:18well, hell,
09:18even in the American League,
09:20you can be under
09:21in the wild card race.
09:22Everybody's within
09:23five games
09:25of a playoff spot.
09:26That makes it hard
09:27for teams to say,
09:27yeah, we're out.
09:30There's a certain
09:31amount of patience
09:31you just have to have
09:32and remember,
09:34it's not the NFL.
09:36If you lose
09:37three games in a row,
09:38your season's not over.
09:40But I feel like maybe,
09:41maybe Dana's taking
09:43a little too much heat
09:46because the guys
09:47that they were talking
09:48about this offseason,
09:50well, they all stink
09:51right now.
09:53And the guys you kept,
09:55well, they're playing.
09:57And they've been
09:58impactful for you.
10:00Would I like to see them
10:01go out and make a big deal?
10:02Yeah, I would.
10:03Do they have the pieces
10:05to go make a big deal?
10:07I don't know.
10:09But you gotta find out.
10:11I don't think it's
10:12that Dana's not trying.
10:14Well, duh.
10:15I think it's just a matter of
10:16he's got a job
10:17he wants to keep too.
10:18Yeah.
10:19Being employed
10:19doesn't suck.
10:22Yeah, it's the
10:24NFC South
10:25of Major League Baseball.
10:26It really is.
10:26They are four and a half
10:28games out
10:28even though they've
10:30played so poorly.
10:31There is so much
10:32real estate left
10:33in the season.
10:34All is not lost.
10:35Whether it's division title,
10:37whether it's wild card,
10:38I'm not saying
10:38that they're a Super Bowl.
10:39Super Bowl, haha.
10:40I'm not saying
10:41that they are a contender
10:42to win the World Series
10:43or even get to the ALCS.
10:45But there is so much
10:46time left to go.
10:48And in their division,
10:50they have the benefit
10:50of playing poorly,
10:52now getting healthy
10:54as much as they can
10:55starting to put together
10:56a better stretch
10:57and then maybe
10:58see where they are
11:00before that end
11:01of July trade deadline
11:02and then it's time
11:03to make a move.
11:04But don't make a move now
11:05based on what you've seen
11:06when you don't need to
11:07and when the division
11:09is still so wide open.
