00:00Winning a World Cup is the ultimate dream in soccer, but something always stays with the champion.
00:05A curse. After winning, almost no one does it again. Not because they forget how to play,
00:10but because staying on top is much harder than getting there.
00:14Since 1930, across more than 20 World Cups, only two national teams have managed to win back-to-back.
00:21Italy in 1934 and 1938. Brazil in 1958 and 1962. And that's it.
00:29Every other champion has fallen. Some unexpectedly, others in humiliating fashion.
00:35Spain won in 2010 and four years later, gone in the group stage.
00:40Italy won in 2006 and in 2010 failed to make it past the first round.
00:45Germany won in 2014 and in 2018 were knocked out with just one win.
00:50It's not a coincidence, it's a pattern. After winning, the pressure changes.
00:55Everyone wants to beat you. Everyone plays against you like it's a final.
00:59The champion no longer surprises. The champion becomes the target.
01:03And the champion stops attacking. They start defending.
01:07But defending is always harder than climbing back to the top.
01:11That's why this phenomenon is called the champion's curse.
01:13Not because the champion gets worse, but because staying on top is almost impossible.
01:18Winning a World Cup is touching the sky. Defending it is surviving up there.
01:22Thank you for joining.
01:22And you may come and see.
01:23Like or leave us a moment.
