00:02Once upon a time, there lived a fair maiden and a handsome prince, named Daphne and Ian.
00:15Hailing from the land of California, they were high school sweethearts who married.
00:22And then, one day, Daphne inherited an ancient castle in a faraway kingdom called France.
00:30People keep asking us if living at the Chateau is like a fairy tale.
00:34And it is.
00:36But...
00:38These joys are rotting, man.
00:41We've got fungus growing from the ceiling.
00:43We've got a huge problem.
00:45Daphne and Ian's destiny...
00:47Oh, no.
00:48...is to rescue the castle from ruin.
00:51If you compare this castle renovation to your average home renovation, it's...
00:55Like, 50 times bigger.
00:57Yeah.
00:59It's a whole village.
01:03So far, we've managed to renovate the Chateau so that we can live and work here and develop the wedding
01:08business.
01:09But we've invested every cent we have into this place.
01:13We've got 80,000 euros worth of work.
01:17Every renovation that we do has to be bringing revenue in.
01:21What do you want to do with this?
01:22A tea room.
01:23This is the perfect place for a medieval tavern.
01:25In the dungeon?
01:27I inherited the Chateau from my grandfather.
01:30Keeping it alive for future generations is what our goal is.
01:34Bon appétit.
01:35Bon appétit.
01:38It's really beautiful.
01:40Wow.
01:43Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
01:48Will Daphne and Ian's fairy tale...
01:50Whoa.
01:52...become a nightmare?
01:54Oh, la, la.
01:55Or will they live happily ever after?
01:59I hope it's happily ever after.
02:01It's the best option.
02:06We've created a space that is a business venture.
02:09We'll be able to get a lot more clients for photo shoots,
02:12but it's also a space that we're going to be able to enjoy.
02:15Wow. Daphne is incredible.
02:19Granny would like to move in with us.
02:33Tony!
02:35How are you doing? All right?
02:37I'm good to tell you.
02:38Good to have reinforcements.
02:41Tony is our go-to contractor
02:44and our Chateau Renovation Jedi Master.
02:47This is serious.
02:49If we take this out, we will definitely have a collapse.
02:52Tony saved the day again.
02:53That's what I do, mate.
02:55Tony is from England.
02:58He has absolutely become part of the family.
03:01Unbelievable.
03:03How have you been?
03:03We've been good.
03:04Everything's still standing, except for maybe the gatehouse.
03:08That's the big thing we need you to look at this time.
03:11What's your plans for it?
03:12My grandma wants to move to the property.
03:15Okay.
03:18Whoa.
03:20This is unbelievable.
03:22I mean, look, the place is being held up by props.
03:25These ceilings and floors have got to come out.
03:28I can see all the brickwork's just crumbling.
03:30Everything is rotten.
03:33You weren't expecting it?
03:33I'm waiting for one of you to laugh and say,
03:35this ain't really what we're doing.
03:36You've got another job for me.
03:38We were also surprised, but Granny was pretty clear.
03:42She likes the gatehouse.
03:44The gatehouse is a lovely building and it's an ancient building.
03:48If it wasn't, I would say to you, pull it down and we'll rebuild it.
03:54Shall we go check up upstairs?
03:57Whoa.
03:58Careful on the stairs.
03:59Yep.
03:59I've seen wonky floors before, but that, we've got to be four inches lower here than in that corner.
04:06There's a lot of black mold.
04:07It's obviously got damp over the years.
04:09We've got to strip this back to its bare bones before we can start putting it back together.
04:13The gatehouse is a huge job and it'll be expensive.
04:17It will cost us time and money we don't really have.
04:20But family comes first and Granny's happiness is our priority.
04:24I'll go through some figures tonight, but it's going to be a massive amount of work.
04:31The gatehouse is only 860 square feet, the perfect size for Granny.
04:37Downstairs, there are two rooms and a small walled garden.
04:41Upstairs, there are two more rooms, but no bathroom.
04:45Grandpa used the first floor as an office, but it's basically been abandoned for at least 20 years.
04:50The building itself is over 400 years old.
04:54When the castle was in its heyday, a gatekeeper lived here.
04:57He controlled the gates and was the castle's first line of defense.
05:01The gatekeeper would ultimately decide who can enter the castle grounds.
05:05And I guess that's Granny's job now.
05:08I should probably stay on her good side.
05:18Hello, Granny!
05:20My grandma has her eyes set on the gatehouse.
05:23She wants to be able to be independent.
05:25But if she needs help, we're right next door in the hunter's lodge.
05:29But I don't think she realizes how much work still has to be done on that place.
05:33And I don't know that she can afford it, but I do know that we can't.
05:39Well, Sire.
05:41Is there a reason why you want to do something here, now?
05:45It's to be close to you.
05:47Because otherwise, I don't have to be alone.
05:50I don't want to be alone.
05:54I can go and install it.
05:57You don't want to talk about being alone.
06:01Yes, my pupunette.
06:03But yes, yes, yes.
06:04For the house, it's always a house to rebuild.
06:10There's no sanitizer, no electricity.
06:12I don't have budgeted these jobs.
06:15Do you participate in paying jobs?
06:19Yes, of course.
06:21Okay.
06:21The least possible.
06:23Okay.
06:25The minimum that we can do in this house to live.
06:28She's saying that she just wants the very bare minimum.
06:32Maybe we can surprise her with something a little more stylish.
06:35Yeah.
06:35When would you like to install it at the castle?
06:39The next spring.
06:41The next spring?
06:43No?
06:46Oui?
06:47Oui?
06:49Springtime?
06:51That's like less than four months.
06:53Yeah.
06:54Okay.
06:56Je vais...
06:57I'm going to go start the job right now.
07:07Hammer time?
07:08It's hammer time.
07:14That was easy.
07:15When Daphne and I renovate anything in the chateau, we have to do something that's going to show a return
07:19on income.
07:20That way we can pay for the next renovation.
07:22But in this case, this is a project that is not about trying to generate more funds.
07:27It's just about trying to make granny happy.
07:30Granny's always been there for Daphne.
07:32And some of her favorite childhood memories are with granny in France.
07:36And now Daphne just wants to give something back.
07:40Okay.
07:41One, two, three.
07:45Luckily, we do have some revenue coming in.
07:47We have some weddings booked and we've already had some photo shoots in the library, which buys us some breathing
07:52room to focus on the gatehouse.
07:54But we'll need to get back to renovations that will bring in money soon.
07:59There's all rubbish in between the joists.
08:02There's all bottles up here.
08:04Just to be clear though, this isn't treasure, right?
08:06This is not treasure, mate.
08:08No.
08:08Okay.
08:11Granny's heart is set on a traditional cottage, so we'll strip off the ugly concrete render.
08:16If we're lucky, there's beautiful old stonework waiting underneath.
08:21We'll swap out the rotten joinery for heritage windows and doors and add cute bespoke shutters.
08:28Out the back of the gatehouse, we'll create a secret courtyard garden.
08:34Inside, we have no choice but to tear out all of the decaying internal walls and staircase.
08:40We'll add a new staircase on the opposite side of the building.
08:44This will provide space upstairs for a luxurious bathroom and two bedrooms.
08:50Downstairs, we'll add a restroom, but the rest of the living area will be open planned to maximize space with
08:57a beautiful cottage-style kitchen and cozy living room.
09:01The build will cost $150,000.
09:04Granny will pay $120,000 and we'll cover the rest.
09:12This house actually feels big all of a sudden.
09:15Just got to clear all the mess up now.
09:21Ian, Tony, the dumpster man is here?
09:25Well, that doesn't look good.
09:27I don't think he'll get through.
09:31No, no, no.
09:32Oh, he can't go through it.
09:33The dumpster truck is about two inches too wide to go through our gate.
09:38We need a bigger chateau.
09:40We have a wedding tomorrow, so we can't exactly put the dumpster on the outside of the gate.
09:44Not a good look having a dumpster in front of a beautiful castle before a wedding.
09:48So he's got to go.
09:54I've got a massive spanner in the works. What are we going to do now?
10:01What if we use the loader?
10:03The loader?
10:05I can lift the bucket up.
10:07That thing went working last time I was here.
10:10My buddy fixed it.
10:11Last year, my best buddy Sam was here.
10:14He fixed his tractors in his spare time and he got the old loader running.
10:18It's been broken down for years.
10:19Come on, baby.
10:21You've got a load of a massive bucket on it that can go right up to the window.
10:25And we have another dumpster in the back next to the hanger.
10:28What are we waiting for?
10:35That's going to get us out of trouble.
10:37All right, that's good.
10:38Beautiful.
10:48I'm going to get you.
10:51I'm going to get you.
10:52I'm going to get you.
10:56Admittedly, this was not the chariot I thought I would be getting when I moved to the chateau.
11:01But this will do.
11:03Let's go.
11:04Woo!
11:06Granny loved the beautiful stonework and interior walls of the Hunter's Lodge we exposed last year.
11:12Oh, it's very, very beautiful.
11:15So we want to create the same look in the gatehouse.
11:18But it's only possible if we have solid stone walls underneath here.
11:26You guys!
11:28There's cinder blocks.
11:31That's not pretty.
11:33Hang on a minute though, look.
11:34Looks like an old fireplace, look.
11:36You can see all the soot marks and they look like where the mantle used to be.
11:39Oh, for real?
11:40Yeah.
11:40And then the concrete blocks it all up.
11:42OK, because I was panicking.
11:43I thought the walls were just cinder blocks.
11:45There's no reason we can't reuse this.
11:47You can even put a wood burner there.
11:49Oh my God, that would be amazing.
11:54Something weird going on here.
11:56We weren't expecting that real big hole in here.
11:59This feels like the flu, which is weird.
12:01I'm trying to think whether there was a chimney breast here.
12:04It's really weird.
12:05You wouldn't normally take a breast out downstairs without supporting the one above.
12:10Yeah.
12:10Because there's nothing holding that up.
12:12And then there's a stack on top of that on the roof bearing down on these joists.
12:16So we've got a major problem.
12:18I've seen it before.
12:18People have took a chimney breast out on the first floor and not supported the chimney breast on the second
12:23floor.
12:25What's the worst case scenario?
12:27The building falls down.
12:29This is serious.
12:30So you've got tons and tons of stone.
12:33That literally could just come through an azalea.
12:42Let's get it propped up.
12:50Nice.
12:50Okay.
12:54Our hydrangeas need to be cut back so that we get nice big bushy flowers for the summer for our
13:01weddings.
13:01In the summertime when I would come to visit my grandparents, my grandma would always take me out here and
13:08between each wedding we would clip back the roses and make sure that everything looked fresh.
13:15I feel like my grandma and my grandfather have a really unique story.
13:19My grandma was pretty much fiercely independent.
13:23And I mean, she was born during the war, lost her father at three, had to like go to a
13:29boarding school.
13:30I think she was like 17 when she like had saved up enough money to go on her first vacation
13:37with her girlfriend.
13:38She decided to go to a camping tour of Corsica, which happened to be run by my grandfather.
13:49My grandparents fell in love, got married, ended up with two children.
13:53And then at some point my grandma decided she kind of needed to do her own thing and divorced her
13:59husband.
14:00And it really was with like me coming to France in the summer times to come and spend time with
14:05my grandparents that they actually started spending time together again.
14:09And it's really sweet because by the end of my grandfather's life, they didn't rekindle their marriage, but they had
14:18a very deep friendship.
14:20And I saw my grandpa like stop my grandma and tell her that he loved her.
14:27And she's like, of all the years we were married, he never told me.
14:33The fact that my grandma's coming to live at the Chateau, I just think my grandfather would be so happy.
14:54Babe?
14:55Yeah?
14:55Whatcha doing?
14:56I know Granny wants everything as like cheaply done as possible, and she just wants to be able to move
15:02in.
15:02But making a few tweaks could make a huge difference for her joy of living in that space.
15:09Long story short, she doesn't need two bedrooms.
15:12We take that whole room out, open the floor.
15:14We can actually create a mezzanine area for Granny here.
15:19Are you talking about opening up into the attic?
15:21All the way to the roof, so that way you get like a true A-frame.
15:25It would be kind of like what we have here.
15:27This is actually what inspired me.
15:29She'll actually have a view of the Chateau from her bed.
15:33So the layout would be like, this is her bedroom.
15:36Mm-hmm.
15:37That would be a view of the Chateau.
15:39Yeah.
15:40That's definitely going to save on the budget.
15:43Exactly.
15:44I think it's a good idea.
15:45I just hope Granny loves it.
15:49We want to take Granny's gatehouse to new heights, literally.
15:52We're transforming the second floor into a mezzanine by stripping out one of the bedrooms.
15:58This will also save money because there's one less room to decorate.
16:02By removing the first and second floor ceiling joists, we'll create a dramatic double height space.
16:08From her light-filled living room, Granny will be able to look all the way up to the exposed roof
16:13rafters,
16:14and it will give her a beautiful view of the castle from her bedroom.
16:18You ready for this, mate?
16:20We're going to dramatically change the look of this place.
16:23Step one in creating the double height living space is removing half of the second floor ceiling beams, revealing the
16:29roof A-frame.
16:40With the beams out, we can insulate and drywall the upstairs.
16:58Today we have a bit of spring cleaning to do.
17:01Everyone has to do it in their home.
17:03Cleaning your vents.
17:06Ian and I are really trying to take on the jobs that we can do,
17:10so that we can keep our finances for the jobs that are, like, beyond us.
17:16And we have some really big jobs this year.
17:18Yes!
17:20So satisfying!
17:23During the weddings, we have a strict no confetti rule.
17:27It's actually flammable.
17:28We want to avoid flames coming up through the vents.
17:31Every once in a while, somebody will lose a pearl earring.
17:34But what are you going to do with one pearl earring?
17:36I guess you could be a pirate.
17:39I always hope I find a little bit of treasure, but not this time.
17:49We don't have any weddings now for a few weeks.
17:52So we can finally put a dumpster outside the gatehouse.
17:59This is the first time I've broken through a floor.
18:02On purpose.
18:04We've just removed the ceiling upstairs, so we can look up into the roof.
18:08And the next stage will be to take the floor out.
18:12Here's our joists.
18:13Look at that.
18:16As you walk into the building, you'll look straight up and we'll create a big cathedral ceiling.
18:22Running right up to the roof.
18:25It'll be quite spectacular, I think.
18:32So the plan is to rip out all of the joists in the front half of the gatehouse.
18:36The back half will stay to create granny's bedroom and bathroom.
18:44Another 20 to go.
18:51This is going to be awesome.
18:53I've got a bit of a concern.
18:56I don't think you're going to like what I'm about to say, but I think we've got to cut all
19:00the joists out.
19:01You've got to be kidding me.
19:03The timber joists they put in are all different heights, different width and thicknesses.
19:08We're never going to be able to put a new timber floor in because the floor will be like that.
19:12It'll just be like a wave running fro.
19:15This place has got to go back to just the outside walls left.
19:22I'm a little concerned of how this will impact the build.
19:27I see what you mean.
19:28You can see the joists are not level.
19:31It's all just different heights.
19:33So the only option is really to take out all of the first floor and rebuild the half that we
19:38want to keep.
19:40Granny wants a simple renovation.
19:42She might not be happy to hear we've ripped everything out of her house.
19:45So yeah, I'm a little scared.
20:23I'm a little bit nervous about updating my grandma with the gatehouse renovations.
20:27I'm a little bit nervous about updating my grandma with the gatehouse renovations.
20:27Because when I was doing the renovations on the Hunter's Lodge, she definitely felt heartbroken about the spirit of Papi's
20:36home having been taken out.
20:38I don't know if it's indispensable to break everything like that.
20:43There's no memory of this house.
20:47There's nothing more.
20:49Papi disappeared with the house.
20:51I just want to make sure that we don't recreate a situation like that.
20:55And where are we now?
20:59It's moving.
21:00It's moving slowly.
21:02It's moving. There are some things that we have to go back.
21:06Because we need to do everything to be able to rebuild.
21:09I don't think it was in such a bad state, this house.
21:15But we're going to spend phenomenal sums in this house.
21:18Now, we need to go to the Unis...
21:23...to see a little bit...
21:25When would you want to come?
21:27Tomorrow.
21:29Okay, tomorrow.
21:30Okay.
21:31Okay.
21:35She wants to come tomorrow.
21:36And we are not ready for her to come tomorrow.
21:39I'm a little bit terrified.
21:41If she gets overwhelmed by what she sees, the reality is she could still pull out at this point.
21:50I couldn't get a hold of Daphne, and she's not going to be back for another few hours.
21:54I also don't want to hold us up.
21:56I feel like the best option is just to take it out.
21:58We can't do anything else if we're trying to get this down on such a tight schedule.
22:03Let's just hope she's not too freaked out when she sees that we took out the whole first floor.
22:18It's a bit different, isn't it?
22:19I think it's awesome, yeah.
22:20Yeah.
22:27Hello boys!
22:30Oh my gosh.
22:34Ian, Tony, can I see you guys in the gatehouse?
22:38At least what's left of it.
22:40I'll be right there.
22:44You guys, Granny's going to be here tomorrow.
22:48Right now we have a shell of a house.
22:51There is a lot more floor missing than I was expecting.
22:54We had no choice but to take it.
22:56There was no choice.
22:58And it's going to be cheaper to put new Joyce back in than try and do anything with what's there.
23:04She's not even going to be able to see where she's going to sleep.
23:06That was not part of the plan.
23:08She wants a super simple renovation.
23:11I'm freaked out, feeling like we've dismantled the whole house.
23:14If Granny doesn't like it, then...
23:16We're all in trouble.
23:17Yep.
23:18I feel like she's going to see this and she might want to back out of the project.
23:31All right, she should be here any second.
23:40Hello.
23:42How are you?
23:44Hello.
23:44Hello, hello.
23:46You have a lot of hair.
23:48Yes, sorry.
23:49Hello, hello, Alison.
23:50Hello.
23:51Hello, Ellie.
23:53What's he doing?
23:55Yeah.
23:57Uh-oh.
23:58There was more than we were doing?
24:00Yeah.
24:02Ellie.
24:07Oh...
24:08Oh, were there!
24:09It broke out, right?
24:12These horrific tests...
24:14Yes.
24:15Oh, sorry.
24:25Oh-la-la.
24:26Oh-la-la.
24:27There are different interpretations of oh-la-la.
24:30It could be really good and it could be really bad.
24:32I think in this case it means,
24:34oh-la-la, why have you wrecked my cottage?
24:38This is going to cost lots of money.
24:40That's what oh-la-la means sometimes.
24:42But then, there's nothing at the stage,
24:45we can't go there.
24:47So, we'll rebuild the second floor here
24:51so that we can put the bed and the bathroom.
24:55There's a problem with the wood.
24:58I have to change everything.
25:00Well, now it's gone, it's gone.
25:03Yes.
25:06Tony has some bad news.
25:09Do you want to tell her?
25:12I've lived and I've lived than before, right?
25:15Yes.
25:17I didn't expect to have enough jobs to do.
25:21Yes.
25:23Well, okay.
25:25Are you happy now?
25:27I'm happy.
25:29It's very, very, very, very,
25:35to be happy with a house in this state.
25:43What do you mean?
25:45I'm happy.
25:47I'm happy.
25:48I've seen it a lot.
25:50I've known this house for 20 years.
25:53We didn't do the job, but it was habitable.
25:56And now it's not at all.
25:59I didn't expect that.
26:01What I'm worried about is the money.
26:03Because it will cost a lot more expensive than it was expected.
26:13You.
26:14Granny's a little nervous about additional costs.
26:16She definitely feels overwhelmed by how big this project is.
26:19Mm-hmm.
26:20I did wonder if this was too early to show Granny.
26:22I mean, she saw it at its worst.
26:24She had a few concerns, because obviously it's shocking.
26:26She goes in there, she sees it all completely stripped out,
26:29and there's more work than any of us anticipated.
26:32So we got a big old job in front of us here.
26:43Replacing the Joyce under Granny's bedroom
26:45and the bathroom will cost $4,000,
26:47and I've told Granny that Ian and I will cover it.
26:51Thankfully, she's still on board with this renovation,
26:54but only just.
26:56And she'll be back in about four weeks
26:58to check on our progress.
27:00I've kind of devised a plan with Ian and Tony,
27:03which is that the next time my grandma comes
27:05that we have the outside looking, like, pristine
27:08so that she can really get a little more encouragement
27:11and excitement about the house.
27:13We can start removing the render,
27:15and hopefully we'll find the original stonework underneath.
27:24It's looking good, isn't it?
27:25Yeah.
27:26It looks much better.
27:29But this porch is in a weird place.
27:32I think it would make sense to put it over that door
27:34so that way when she's trying to get her keys out,
27:36she's not getting rained on.
27:37Oh, come on.
27:41Guy.
27:45How's that going to be for you, having Granny living here?
27:47She's got her cat, Charlie.
27:49She plays Scrabble.
27:50She watches a lot of TV.
27:52She's like every grandmother I've ever met.
27:54Mm-hmm.
27:54I think it'll be good,
27:55but I am glad that it's in an outbuilding,
27:59that we're going to have a little bit of breathing room.
28:01Yeah, you need it.
28:02Plus, it'll be helpful Granny being here
28:04because you'll hear French a lot more, won't you?
28:05She's not afraid to correct my French whenever I'm wrong.
28:08Oh, yeah. No, I don't doubt it.
28:09She's very, very direct about how bad I am at it.
28:11So that's good.
28:12Not for my ego, but, you know, for my learning.
28:18Ooh.
28:19We're gone.
28:21That ain't great, is it?
28:23I think we're going to need to make new brackets up for Granny.
28:33I just really want to clean this space up for Granny
28:36and, you know, give her her own little garden space.
28:39I know that she'll really appreciate...
28:41Oh, my goodness.
28:43This has overgrown.
28:47The moss and vines and the blackberry bushes.
28:51The massive propane tank.
28:54This propane tank does provide all the fuel for the Hunter's Lodge
28:58and for the gatehouse now,
29:00so we need this propane tank to stay here.
29:03I have a plan for that.
29:05Oh, okay.
29:06We'll put, like, a nice little fence around it.
29:13Start on this side.
29:16Battle of the blackberry bushes.
29:20Excuse me, Arkea.
29:22Attention.
29:31You getting worms for fishing?
29:33Yeah, mate.
29:34Got to fish the lake on a moat.
29:36Nice.
29:37At the front of the cottage,
29:38what I'm hoping to create is, like,
29:39a little patio space that looks out onto the chateau.
29:46Where the bloody hell's at?
29:49Bethany?
29:50Yeah?
29:51Come here in a second.
29:52Just dug something out of the ground.
29:54What have you found?
30:03There's a weird wing shape thing on top of the earth.
30:06Look.
30:07Oh, my God.
30:08You found treasure!
30:12It's a horse bit.
30:14Oh.
30:14It's what they bite down on.
30:16They bite on it?
30:17Yeah.
30:18Well, that's probably not treasure.
30:20Yes, it is.
30:21It could be, like, hundreds of years old.
30:23The gatehouse was where people would give the horse to the gatehouse man,
30:27and then they would take the horses to the stables.
30:30They must have had horses coming through here all the time.
30:33See if we can find something else.
30:35See if we can find something else.
31:01That'll knock some muck up.
31:04Yeah, let's give it a wiggle through the middle, and then you lay your block.
31:08So there used to be a doorway here, but Daphne was realising that if we kept that doorway,
31:12then the space for kitchen units was a lot smaller.
31:15And so by putting in a wall instead, we can build out the kitchen, get a lot more space there.
31:22Now, if you want to place that one.
31:26See, just lay it there.
31:28Okay.
31:30So she's sitting up a tiny bit there, isn't she?
31:33That's looking good.
31:35Mm-hmm.
31:35This gap between the blocks, we fill that with a bit of Donald after.
31:39Did you call it Donald?
31:41Donald duck muck.
31:42Okay.
31:44Certain parts of London, especially, use a lot of rhyming slang.
31:48Donald duck is about as American as it gets.
31:50Yeah, even Mickey Mouse, yeah.
31:52Yeah, I guess Mickey Mouse is a lot more.
31:54So we use that for house.
31:56Really?
31:56Yeah.
31:57Someone's house, Mickey Mouse.
31:59Okay, so we're putting the Donald duck on the Mickey Mouse?
32:02Pretty much.
32:03Okay.
32:04Learning French is hard enough.
32:06Let's stick to American English for a little bit.
32:08Might be easier, mate.
32:10We have a wall.
32:12I like it.
32:13I have a little bit of a drawing for you guys.
32:17When we first started the job, the plan was to break off all the render on all faces of the
32:23building.
32:24The front of the building, which faces the alley, we've took all the render off there and it's all stonework
32:28beneath.
32:29The other two faces were stonework at the bottom and then timber frame above.
32:35What the fridge call columbage, which is a timber framed house and then they infill with brick and stone and
32:41it's normally rendered.
32:43Problem is, in the past, someone's rendered over the upper section with a very strong sand and cement mix.
32:50Oh.
32:51A little bit of wood came with it.
32:53So as we're trying to break that off, it's destroying all the timber frame.
32:57Looks really good.
32:59As I was proposing, we place timbers onto the render.
33:03So like putting...
33:03So we still get the same effect, but we don't actually take the cement off.
33:08And create a columbage effect.
33:10Let's do it.
33:11Yeah.
33:14Hmm.
33:14What am I smelling?
33:15Is that pine?
33:16It's oak.
33:17It's a lovely smell, isn't it?
33:20We're using green oak.
33:22It's literally come straight from the tray and it's planked at the sawmill.
33:26This is going to look so good.
33:28As it dries out, it will slightly crack and shrink.
33:31It will silver down with the weather.
33:33It will look original.
33:35Beautiful.
33:35Yeah, it's looking better already.
33:47It feels so good to finally have these windows here.
33:51Okay.
33:54We're getting the moss removed from the gatehouse roof to make sure it's still in good condition
33:58and give it a fresh look.
34:01Toni is laying the patio in front of the door so Granny can have her lunch looking out at
34:06the chateau.
34:07We're painting the outside of the windows green so that they match the Hunter's Lodge windows.
34:13And Ian has been recreating the ornate woodwork for the porch.
34:17Hmm.
34:19Oh.
34:20Just keep that side away from everybody.
34:32Cat door.
34:33This is Granny's house.
34:35She's made so many efforts for me throughout my entire life that this is like the way that
34:41I can give back.
34:42Making sure that she likes what we've done for her is super important to me.
34:48And she's a tough lady to please.
34:52The house looks lovely.
34:54I'll go get Granny.
34:55Okay.
34:56Maybe just, you know, butter her up, sweet talk her a little bit on the drive over.
34:59Yeah.
35:00I'll do my best.
35:23I have to admit, I was pretty nervous picking my grandma up because last time Granny came,
35:28she saw the house being pulled apart and it gave her cold feet.
35:33Ian and I need to be able to show her that we're progressing so that she can feel inspired by
35:39the project again.
35:40Hello, Jeannot.
35:43How are you?
35:43Well, we're going to go.
35:45Yes.
35:49So Granny.
35:50Oh, the house, it's my house, that's my house.
35:53What do you think?
36:06Oh, it's great.
36:08Yes.
36:08It's very, very beautiful.
36:13Granny likes what we've done.
36:21It has changed so much.
36:23Yes, it has changed so much.
36:31Before we took on the gatehouse, it was in a miserable state.
36:40We managed to give the house a real cottage feel.
36:43It was a big risk uncovering the render.
36:46We didn't know what we were going to find.
36:48But we're so happy with the result.
36:50I even love the brickwork of the chimney stack.
36:53It tells the story of the history of this building.
37:19I love the beautiful columbage.
37:21I love that style.
37:23It's something that Daphne and I have always adored.
37:25And I'm really happy to have that back here at the property.
37:29We made a small terrace.
37:31A small terrace.
37:32A small terrace, yes.
37:33A small terrace, yes.
37:33You saw it on the castle.
37:35Maybe I could have breakfast there.
37:38Yes.
37:38I remember that your favorite fleur was the Hortensia.
37:42And that's what you always put in the castle.
37:44So I thought that it would be good for the house.
37:46Yes, it's good.
37:47It's very good.
37:48I had a little treasure to show you.
37:50Did you see it?
37:51Oh, my little child.
37:52Oh, he's going to be happy, Charlie.
37:54He's going to be happy, my little Charlie.
37:57One of the things that has always been important to Papi
38:01was making sure that Granny was taken care of.
38:04And when Papi was getting to the end of his days,
38:07I came to France to take care of him.
38:10And now it just feels like it's time for us
38:13to start taking care of Granny.
38:15I think it's going to be your favorite corner here.
38:22Oh, it's wonderful.
38:25Superb.
38:28It changed a little bit what it was.
38:31Oh, yeah.
38:33The garden behind the gatehouse
38:34has only ever been where the gas tank is stored.
38:37But now it's a beautiful space where Granny can relax
38:40with flowers all around her and the sun shining through.
38:44Daphne had this great idea to hide the gas tank
38:47by putting up this fencing.
38:48And it can be used to hang plants off of.
38:51This feels like a very private and intimate space for Granny.
38:54Qu'est-ce que tu penses?
38:56Je pense que vous avez très, très bien travaillé.
38:59Oui.
39:00Et que le grand-père de Magnus serait très fière.
39:08I don't think Tony's seen this with all the flowers.
39:10No, but we should get him.
39:12I put out a place setting for him.
39:14Hey, Tony.
39:16Want a drink?
39:17Yeah.
39:17Cheers, mate.
39:19I got a spot for you.
39:21There you go.
39:22Oh, this looks beautiful.
39:24Bravo!
39:24Oh, Granny!
39:26Comment ça va?
39:27Ça va bien?
39:28Et toi?
39:32Oh, yeah.
39:32First time I've seen this with all the flowers in, it looks really nice, isn't it?
39:35Yous are making the most of it as well, weren't you?
39:38We're trying.
39:39Come join us.
