Cannes winner Jafar Panahi faces prison and travel ban from Iran

On Sunday, Mostafa Nili, lawyer for Jafar Panahi, announced that a Tehran Revolutionary Court has rejected the objections and fully upheld the in-absentia verdict against the prominent Iranian filmmaker.

00:00Acclaimed filmmaker and compound door winner, Jafar Panahi faces prison and a travel ban following a court decision in Tehran.
00:07On Sunday, his lawyer Mustafa Nili told an Iranian media outlet that a revolutionary court has rejected their objections
00:13and fully upheld the in absentia verdict against the prominent director.
00:18Under the initial verdict, Panahi had been sentenced to one year in prison on the charge of engaging in propaganda
00:24against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
00:26Nili added that his client was also handed a two-year travel ban and prohibited from joining political and social
00:32groups and associations.
00:34The grounds cited for the verdict included making an underground and problematic film against the establishment,
00:40supporting political prisoners, backing popular protests and supporting the woman life freedom slogan.
00:46The initial court ruling was issued while Panahi was abroad taking part in a publicity campaign for the film A

00:53which was selected to represent France in the race for the Academy Award.
00:56The director returned to Iran on March 30 after attending the Oscars.
