00:00All the experience of a wily veteran there.
00:06Kimmich no stranger to the game at the very highest level.
00:09It will be his third World Cup.
00:11He's played every minute of all three Germany games at the last two World Cups.
00:14His first major tournament was the Euros in 2016 when they lost against France in the semi-final.
00:21He was ill when the US last played Germany in East Hartford in 2023, so didn't play in that game.
00:30And Ussiala driving forward there, manages to win the corner on the far side.
00:34First corner of the game here for Germany.
00:43Well Germany caused the United States problems from the first free kick in this game when Haberts scored.
00:49This time they'll go short, Kimmich on the far side.
00:52Werts still over there having taken the corner.
00:54Werts hoists it high and too high and out for a goal kick.
01:05into the 30th minute here.
01:15Pressure coming as Fries and now Ream tried to play it away down the left side.
01:19This is Anthony Robinson.
01:22Kenny with a little flick but it's given away and picked up by Kimmich.
01:28Pavlovich with the ball to the edge of the box.
01:30Now Werts runs into Miles Robinson.
01:32Anthony Robinson can bring this one away.
01:35He almost got caught.
01:39And he has given the goal kick actually here.
01:42Matt Fries rushed across thinking that he needed to try and keep that one in play.
01:45But it had gone out anyway for a goal kick for the United States.
01:49And as that mix isn't between being calm and composed on the ball at the back and maybe sometimes overdoing
01:54it a little bit.
01:54It's hard to get it right because honestly you don't want the U.S. to go away from building out
01:58of the back.
01:58The best chances have been when Germany come out of that mid-block and start to push up the field.
02:03And there's a little more space in between.
02:04They can transition through.
02:06So far I love the U.S. continuing to play through that pressure.
02:09But it's just those moments you've got to know when.
02:12It's just got to be lumped up.
02:14And Malikin's done a good job of making himself an option.
02:17No criticism of the U.S. so far in picking their moments to play out of the back.
02:22Kai Havertz, 22nd international goal.
02:24The difference between the sides as Anthony Robinson's throw finds Tillman.
02:30This is the hard part.
02:31Germany's just so comfortable in this.
02:33We've spent a lot of time in their shape off the ball.
02:36Closing down passing lanes from the first line of contention all the way to that back line.
02:40It's just so tight.
02:41It's maybe 20 yards.
02:42So you have very little time when the ball comes between the lines.
02:47Dest trying to get some space here to get the cross into the middle.
02:50He's done well there from a tight situation to win the corner.
02:53A third of the game for the United States.
02:55They try and find a way to break down this German back line.
02:59Finland's last week was the fifth clean sheet in the last eight matches for Julian Nagelsmann's team.
03:05He's won 20 of 32 games in charge, having taken over in September of 2023.
03:19Tillman across to the far side to take this one.
03:22The outswinger high towards Freeman at the back post.
03:26In the way, and Sané will race forward here down the right touchline.
03:29Not many options for Sané.
03:31Milba did that one, and Anthony Robinson was able to take advantage.
03:34But Ream forced into the challenge on halfway, and he's knocked over by Havertz.
03:39Free kick for the U.S.
03:41What a vital interception that was from Ream.
03:45I mean, he knew the contact was happening.
03:48That's a great shot because he doesn't get to this ball first.
03:50He knows that Havertz is trying to play it around him, and obviously clear foul there, but a really good
03:55play from Ream.
03:56That's going the other way if he doesn't get to that ball.
04:00Surprised Havertz doesn't get a yellow for that.
04:08Tim Ream playing 45 minutes against Senegal a week ago.
04:12He's now played 20 of Maurizio Pochettino's 26 games.
04:18And has been named the captain for the World Cup.
04:24First game in charge, Maurizio Pochettino came in and made that choice to go with the experience of Tim Ream.
04:30And he's talked about the fact that whether or not Ream plays, the captain still has a role.
04:36And he mentioned a couple of players that he had at club level who were older in their career
04:39and weren't guaranteed to play every week, and maybe someone else has the armband on a game day,
04:43but there's so much more that goes into being the captain of either a club or a country,
04:48whether you're on the field or not.
04:49And Tim Ream fits perfectly into everything Maurizio Pochettino wants from that role at the upcoming World Cup.
05:04that ball forward, taking the deflection, drops for Adams, now McKennie.
05:17Tillman, laid off for Freeman.
05:19Oh, he's turned possession over there.
05:22Rolled through for Sané here on the edge of the box.
05:24Ream has to be alert.
05:25Puts it out of play for a Germany throw.
05:29Yeah, outside of a couple of early backdoor runs,
05:33Robinson and Ream have done so good at managing Sané on this side.
05:36I mean, even though he's 30, he still can absolutely burn.
05:39He's so difficult to keep up with, so graceful on the ball.
05:45Brought down this time by Werzen towards Sané.
05:50With a couple of Premier League titles during his time with Manchester City, Sané.
05:55Wurtz.
06:01Tied on the right side, finds Metzger.
06:05Now Sané.
06:07Ream across doing the defending, Wurtz's ball in,
06:10is cleared away by Anthony Robinson, drops right on the edge of the box,
06:12that touchdown reflection on the way through.
06:17And Friese was able to make the save there after the Pavlovich shot from the edge of the box.
06:27Metzger Musiala there on the way through.
06:32He was concerned with that injury that he got at the Club World Cup last year,
06:36whether Jamal Musiala would be able to get back and be at his best for this tournament.
06:41It'll be his second World Cup.
06:44Three starts in Qatar, scored against the US in October of 2023.
06:51Won his sixth Bundesliga title this year.
06:53Five goals, six assists, and 24 appearances for Musiala in all competitions this season.
07:01Return from injury in January and very much back to that top level.
07:10Out it goes for a corner as Pulisic had gone across to that right side to try and create something.
07:16Yeah, I like that.
07:16I think that's one thing if he doesn't make changes and Pulisic starts the second half.
07:21Yeah, just a little more freedom.
07:22We've seen Germany do that.
07:23We've seen Wurtzic show up all over the field.
07:25I think Christian can start to float a little bit and find the ball in different areas.
07:31Pulisic will take the corner.
07:40Now swinger from Pulisic.
07:42Tar-heads it away.
07:46Oh, my word!
07:48What a strike from Anthony Robinson!
07:55The game tied up with a moment of absolute magic!
08:03I only have one comment.
08:05You cannot hit a ball any sweeter than this.
08:13My...
08:14Oh, boy.
08:24Well, it's the reaction of Weston McKinney.
08:25Hopefully, we get it.
08:27Oh, and Baligan.
08:28Look at Baligan's reaction.
08:32Have a flip.
08:33Take a bow.
08:43Anthony Robinson with his fifth international goal.
08:47The game is level.
08:48And what fashion.
08:55Fans are out of their seats.
08:57We all are out of their seats.
09:03I think we probably lost a lot of beers on that play.
09:09He last scored international goals in back-to-back games against Trinidad and Tobago in November of 2023.
09:17That flew off the boot of Anthony Robinson.
09:22No stopping that from Baumann, the keeper.
09:26And after Germany had scored inside the opening two minutes from Kai Havertz, this one is level as we're 38
09:32minutes in at Soldier Field.
09:33Good to remember the Gold Cup final of many years ago.
09:55Benny Fellharper with a long-range strike.
09:58Similar to that from distance.
10:01It's Balogun. Balogun across, goal!
10:15Concern over Pulisic here.
10:18He hits the ground hard. Here comes the tackle.
10:20Right as he takes the touch and just hits that ground hard.
10:25It's probably not the contact you can see immediately reaches to his back.
10:27Reverie does a good job of play on.
10:30Absolutely, they get a chance out of it.
10:34You said it. I was thinking through the Rolodex.
10:37My boy, Connecticut native, Benny Fellhaber, Beachside native.
10:43I don't know if Benny's was sweet for sure.
10:47And obviously it was a big goal and a big moment.
10:49Oh my.
10:52That is a delicious strike.
10:58A goal worthy of a World Cup final, let alone a send-off match.
11:03From Anthony Robinson.
11:07And out it goes for another corner.
11:09And suddenly it's Germany on the back foot as we move towards the final five minutes of the first half.
11:22It's gone quickly here and it's Christian Pulisic.
11:25In towards Freeman at the back post and Balogun had to get a punch to it.
11:28The flag is up though for offside.
11:42It's a tight one.
11:45I don't know about that.
11:49Germany winning eight of the previous twelve all-time meetings.
11:53Four victories for the US though is their most against any World Cup winning nation.
11:58Is Musiala down the left side trying to turn against Tyler Adams.
12:08If anything, we have to applause this American team.
12:12Weston McKinney said in the pregame, one of the challenges and one of the improvements they wanted was sustaining 30
12:17to 40 minutes of the intensity.
12:19Connect with the ball through, it's Hubbard!
12:21Ships wide!
12:22The flag's gone up anyway.
12:23It looked like he was offside.
12:29And in sustaining the 30, 40 minutes, that's that target number, target amount of time when you really feel the
12:36exhaustion.
12:36Guys, it's hot out here.
12:37I feel it.
12:38The sun is beaming.
12:39You're dealing with different elements.
12:41The pitch could be still slippery.
12:43And they just got to be locked in.
12:44And right now, 41 minutes in, they are.
12:47They're pressing Germany.
12:48They switched the flip.
12:50It all helped to Anthony Robbins' goal.
12:52But this is exactly what Weston wanted to see in improving in this game.
13:00Now it comes towards Serginio Dest.
13:01He's inside the box.
13:02He's down!
13:03It's over from Serginio Dest!
13:06He managed to dance his way through, but he couldn't keep the shot down.
13:12Now as this ball skips through, look at how good Dest is in tight spaces.
13:16That little feint with the right foot, pretending right here like he's going to go outside of the right.
13:22Little shimmy.
13:23Just gets under it slightly.
13:25He wants that one back.
13:27In the U.S., I mean, definitely the second part of this first half.
13:32The dominant team.
13:34Abbott's down after the big challenge from Tyler Adams.
13:38Yeah, and for fans that the cool part about a World Cup is casual fans or curious fans start to
13:45pay attention to the national team and go back and watch the U.S. in 2002 in a World Cup
13:50against Germany.
13:51That was a big moment, obviously the furthest the men have gotten in the World Cup, but going toe-to
13:56-toe with the world power is a very difficult thing to do.
13:59And don't call us a friendly.
14:01Don't make that mistake.
14:02The intensity is going to look the same the first match of the World Cup.
14:06And this U.S. team going toe-to-toe and playing a beautiful style, an ambitious style, a courageous style.
14:13That's big progress for this country over the years.
14:18Michael Ballack with that goal in Ulsan in 2002 in the quarterfinal.
14:25Let's not mention Torsten Frings.
14:27No, I don't want to see it.
14:29I don't want to see it.
14:29I don't want to hear it.
14:30Coming up next is the Volkswagen Halftime Show.
14:34I saw Berhalter at practice the other day.
14:36I think it was his header, wasn't it?
14:37I think he was the one that almost scored that goal.
14:40Yep.
14:42Desk tries to help it out.
14:44Back it goes from top.
14:48The U.S. training most of the week in the incredible new facility in Atlanta, but they were at Chicago
14:53Fires.
14:54Nice new training home as well, ahead of this game.
14:57This is Pulisic.
14:57Pulisic twisting and turning.
14:59Christian Pulisic deflected over.
15:01It's another corner.
15:02It's wave after wave right now from the United States.
15:05Corner number five incoming.
15:11That's what I was saying earlier.
15:12I love that Christian started to float and go find the game.
15:16A very important foot out from top.
15:21Listen to the crowd right now.
15:31Tell them to take it.
15:37The bar goes from the head of Weston McKinney.
15:42And you can't see Tyler Adams right now, but absolutely screaming switched on.
15:46The U.S. last game.
15:49Given up a goal at the end of half.
15:51It's these moments that are so crucial and a veteran player that's been there before.
15:55I mean, he was absolutely going berserk, making sure every player turned around and rested in their defensive positions.
16:09Haberts gets a flick on there.
16:13Anthony Robinson with a strong challenge on Sané.
16:20Kimmich with a throw down the touchline.
16:22Comes towards Haberts here in the corner.
16:26In the battle with Reem, who comes away with the ball now.
16:29It's Tillman for the U.S.
16:32Trying to play their way out down that left side.
16:36But here come Germany with Mecha.
16:38Three minutes of time to be added on at the end of the half.
16:41Our stoppage time is presented by Marriott Bonvoy.
16:47Let's go! Sané.
16:50Ooh, Wirtz.
16:51Well worked here by Germany.
16:53It's Musiala.
16:54Tillman goes through the back of him.
16:55The referee says play on.
16:59And Mauricio Pochettino urging his side forward.
17:02That's a huge challenge coming in from Pavlovich on Pulisic.
17:08No one's taking it easy out there.
17:11Absolutely not.
17:12I was just about to say that.
17:13Are we... did the World Cup start?
17:14Feels like it.
17:18We've talked before about all of the teams that the United States have played over the course of the last
17:24year.
17:24Right back to Mexico in the Gold Cup final.
17:26All teams that are going to be playing in the World Cup.
17:29But the other thing Mauricio Pochettino and the United States have been able to do
17:32Is have different types of experiences.
17:35Sides from different places in the world.
17:37Different confederations.
17:39They've certainly had the tests that they would have wanted.
17:42To be ready for Paraguay.
17:45On Friday.
17:52And out of play goes on the far side for a throw for Germany here.
17:55Midway through the three minutes being added on.
18:00First game in a great double header today.
18:04United States women's national team coming up against Brazil.
18:07Here's Pulisic chasing forward against Tah.
18:10Christian Pulisic is deflected behind for another corner.
18:19It starts with the pressure there from Christian Pulisic.
18:23And Tah, it's so smart.
18:24Just knows he can't go in there and jump in.
18:27Pulisic will fly right by him.
18:29Yeah, it's really good defending.
18:33And we saw the 94 men give them a lot of love.
18:37You can't do that without giving love to that 99 team.
18:40And that was a remarkable moment.
18:43Really cool to have that double header happening today.
18:46Because a lot of U.S. women, they're a world power.
18:49And that 99 World Cup changed the game in this country.
18:56Tillman towards the edge of the box.
18:57This is Anthony Robinson.
18:58Here's Christian Pulisic.
18:59Pulisic drives it in.
19:01And it's another corner on the far side.
19:04Two or three opportunities now coming away of Christian Pulisic,
19:07who a week ago got international goal number 33.
19:12He takes a great first touch.
19:14There's just so many bodies in there.
19:15You gotta get a little lucky to keep it under the bar
19:18and be able to sneak it through.
19:19It's like pinball.
19:21Julie Foudy in the house, by the way, today.
19:23And along with Becky Sauerbrum, we'll be talking all things World Cup
19:26in the bridge show between this game and the women's game.
19:29In towards Palagon.
19:37And that should just about be the end of the half.
19:40In fact, Maurizio Pochettino thought it was.
19:41He's about 20 yards onto the pitch right now.
19:45The staff were cracking up right here.
19:48The whistle does finally go.
19:51And Maurizio Pochettino will be pretty pleased.
19:54The reaction from the crowd shows they're pleased with what they've seen from the US
19:58and from Anthony Robinson with that incredible strike after the early Kai Havertz goal.
20:05This is the Coca-Cola send-off match on TNT.
20:10At the midway mark at Soldier Field, United States 1, Germany 1.
20:19The

20:32It's protected.
20:33This golf cart?
20:34It's protected.
20:35Hey, don't worry.
20:36That phone's protected too.
20:37Protection for just about every part of life.

20:44You're in good hands with Allstate.

20:48This is quite a game.
20:54It'll be a free kick.

21:08Unbridled Joy!
21:09An emotion overflows!
21:19There are 1460 days between the biggest moments in soccer.
21:26The world sees few of them.
21:32Weston's dogs, Sky and Lola see all of them.
21:38Our pets don't just keep up.
21:41They keep us going.
21:50America, this tournament might be fought on the pitch,
21:53but it'll be won in the backyard barbecues.
21:57Nice save.
21:58That guy looks like Tim Howard.
22:00I am Tim Howard.

22:23Fabulous.
22:24It's a legit taco.
22:25I'm going to be coming back for these.
22:26This is perfect.
22:27It's so flavorful.
22:28It's seasoned very well.
22:30Beef is really good.
22:32I would say it's better than a taco.
22:34I'm going to Wawa for my taco.
22:36It's delicious.
22:38It's not too spicy, but it's just spicy enough.
22:40I love it.
22:41This is kind of like homemade.
22:42Don't let your mom hear that.
22:44Don't let it again.

23:23Welcome to Roland Garros.
23:26No place makes you feel so light.
23:29A city that honors greatness.
23:31I love that Paris.
23:37Welcome to the Volkswagen Halftime Show.
23:39A rocky start for the U.S., but they roll into halftime riding the high of this moment
23:44of brilliance from Anthony Robinson.
23:46A vicious strike, leading it's USA 1, Germany 1.
23:51Let's get right to it.
23:52Our first half electric highlights presented by Volkswagen.
23:57That was the big high for the U.S.
23:59This was the other side, though, Brad.
24:00Yeah, I mean, listen, not a way you want to start the game.
24:03Two minutes in, and you're conceding off a set piece.
24:05And what I want to look at here is, you know, when you go back to that highlight, that goal,
24:10you know, it starts with, as we take a look at Anthony Robinson,
24:14just absolutely smashing the ball in the back of the net.
24:16Use the force.
24:17To level the score right before halftime.
24:20What a reaction.
24:20But if we go back to the goal that we conceded two minutes in,
24:23I want to look into Matt Freeze's mind.
24:25And when you look at the setup of that, he's got four in the wall.
24:28And that then tells you what he's thinking.
24:31If you've got four in the wall from that distance,
24:33you're now thinking that he's going to go on goal.
24:36He's going to take a shot on goal.
24:37He's going to go straight for goal.
24:38That affects his positioning.
24:40The second thing is, you've got to be able to see the ball come off his foot.
24:43He doesn't see it until it's over the wall at that point.
24:45He hesitates to potentially come for it.
24:48And ultimately, it's an easy header from four yards out.
24:50And at the end of the day, you've got to be goal side.
24:52You've got to be touch tight.
24:53You've got to win your individual battles.
24:55And obviously, you could tell that Miles Robinson put his hand up and acknowledged that it was his mark.
25:00The first 15 minutes, Germany was Germany.
25:03And then finally, the United States started pinging the ball around their movement.
25:06They figured out defensively kind of that little roll with Florian Burtz tucking underneath Havertz,
25:11with Brown pushing up a little bit higher.
25:13Pavlovich was sitting in the pocket.
25:14And once they sorted that out, then they started to really find the ebbs and flows of possession,
25:19where we saw Sergino Dest up higher.
25:21We saw Weston starting to connect, and even Christian trying to find those little mazy runs down the left hand
25:25side.
25:26Yeah, it's a good test.
25:27And I say that because this is what you're going to see in the World Cup.
25:29Teams are going to be sitting back.
25:31The back three, they have all the time in the world when they get the ball,
25:34especially in the German defensive half.
25:36So how can we manage to get Christian, get Weston, get them unlocked, make runs behind?
25:41How can we be creative and be dangerous in those moments?
25:44Because in the World Cup, a lot of teams are going to drop back off of us
25:46and then see if we can create chances off of that.
25:48In this sport, there are certain moments you look back at, you feel like galvanizing moments,
25:52you remember them during the course of the game.
25:53I wonder if that Anthony Robinson strike right before the World Cup becomes one of those moments.
25:59But I absolutely, but I would also want to point out that Tyler Adams getting a huge chunk of Kai
26:04Havertz
26:04was important in terms of a statement for what he had done to Timmering.
26:08This, it's a thunder ball.
26:10It's a lightning strike.
26:11It's things that as kids we all dream about.
26:13And again, there's a joke that he used the force, but he absolutely hammered this ball.
26:18What a phenomenal take.
26:19You can't hit a ball better than that.
26:20You don't even feel it.
26:21You're not saving that.
26:22No.
26:23And then the chance of USA, USA as he completes the backflip right there.
26:28It's 1-1.
26:29Not everybody's too hot today.
26:32People still feeling fresh.
26:34We're back in just a moment here on the Volkswagen Halftime.

27:30Because when local businesses thrive, the community also thrives.
27:36Well, I think overall, I think it was a very good game.
27:38We have been playing against one of the best teams in the world.
27:43I think a big break to the player because I think we start the game against Germany and conceding in
27:49the first action.
27:50Always difficult after to be on the game.
27:53But I think we did very good things.
27:57We need to keep going.
27:58Keep pushing.
28:00And now in the second half, we are going to have the possibility to start with the same starting level.
28:04But we are going to do all the changes.
28:08We are going to do all the changes.
28:11We are going to do all the changes with them.
28:24You're welcome.
28:25After Kai Havertz had scored inside the first two minutes to give Germany the lead.
28:32Let's see Opochettino there talking about some of the positives that he can take from the first half where Havertz's
28:41goal really took the air out of this stadium.
28:45But then the way the United States fought back and finished on top against this Germany side, a very strong
28:53Germany team, was great to see.
28:56Because this is very close to the side that Germany will put out next week.
29:00Underway here, the final 45 minutes for the United States before the World Cup begins against Paraguay on Friday.
29:121-1 in the sunshine in Chicago.
29:20And Brown with the throw up towards halfway as Adams plays it back forward.
29:27Murciana's ball forward closed down and Dest on the right side tries to find McKennie.
29:32You would expect Maurizio Pochettino to make a number of changes.
29:36He's neutralized a lot of his bench in the second half, but he wants to get some more minutes into
29:41many of these players who will start next week in L.A. against Paraguay.
29:47He goes out for a corner on the far side here for Germany.
29:51It's Zane's play down that right touchline.
29:58Second German corner of the game.
30:05Let's see how Pochettino...
30:06Let's see how Pochettino...
30:07Let's see how Pochettino...
