00:08Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at the 10 greatest movie references we spotted while playing
00:16Lego Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight.
00:32Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays, and ring
00:38the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:42Trusty Batshark Repellent
00:44Oswald, we're just here to talk.
00:46My name's not Oswald, it's Penguin!
00:49I am not a human being!
00:52I'm an animal.
00:54The cold-blooded one!
00:56This gag has been referenced across a plethora of Bat-lore ever since the 1960s.
01:03In the 1966 Batman movie, there is a scene where the Dark Knight gets attacked by a shark.
01:09Though he tries to fight it directly, Batman's ultimate solution is to whip out the handy-dandy Batshark Repellent.
01:16This was apparently enough to escape the shark's clutches, but not enough to escape decades of mockery.
01:22Legacy of the Dark Knight pays tribute to this bit, moments before Batman and Catwoman are finally able to confront
01:29the Penguin.
01:29This is a job for my trusting shark repellent fat spray.
01:35I'd ask if you were joking, but I know better than that.
01:39Sanctioned Buffoonery
01:40Harvey Dent? What are you doing? The name's Two-Face. Dent was a fool chasing order and justice in this
01:50filthy city. I prefer to leave things to luck.
01:55When Two-Face crashes Robin's circus in Chapter 3, he utters a line that may have gone over many, many
02:02players' heads.
02:04As you're beating up his goons, you will hear him say,
02:07You fools haven't beaten him yet!
02:10I simply cannot sanction him for a buffoonery!
02:13Die-hard fans of the movie Batman Forever will recall this was something uttered by actor Tommy Lee Jones during
02:21the film's production.
02:22According to Jim Carrey, who played as the Riddler in the same movie, Jones was not keen on Carrey's humor,
02:29having said to the comedian this exact same phrase.
02:32He said he couldn't sanction my buffoonery.
02:36He couldn't?
02:38He couldn't sanction my buffoonery.
02:40What movie is this? Batman.
02:41That's when we did Batman together.
02:42Wait, you're the star though.
02:44I was the star.
02:45That was the problem.
02:46It cost me an arm and an ear.
02:50What are you, boy?
02:51Hang on.
02:53Phew.
02:54That's hard on the vocal cords.
02:55No idea how he does it.
02:57There are a ton of different items to purchase from Batmite's shop, so much that you may have passed by
03:02this reference without a thought.
03:04Among the items you can acquire is a fairly sizable snowman that costs a hefty fee of 30,000 studs.
03:12Seems pricey, but the description was a little too cute if I'm being honest.
03:18Saying, do you wanna build yadda yadda yadda.
03:22Obviously this has to be a nod to the 2013 Disney film Frozen.
03:26Seriously, how can you not read this and hear young Anna start to sing?
03:32Quiet child, this is not the game for that.
03:34Let me enjoy my expensive snowman in peace.
03:38Elsa?
03:42Do you wanna build a snowman?
03:45Alfred's Dance Party
03:48Wayne, residence. Alfred speaking.
03:51Alfred, run a trace on Red Hood's chopper. We need to find where he took those bears.
03:55Very good, sir.
03:57In Legacy of the Dark Knight, Bruce makes a quick phone call to Alfred while in the middle of investigating
04:03Falcone.
04:04It is here that we get a quick glimpse of what Alfred really does while Batman's out fighting crime.
04:10But the sexy pink shirt and slick dance moves remind us of a certain 80's classic.
04:16Yeah, this bit was an homage to none other than Risky Business.
04:20The 1983 movie has long been famous for its scene where high school student Joel, played by Tom Cruise,
04:27has his own dance party on the first night of his parents being away from home.
04:31We wouldn't be surprised if Alfred's doing his own dance party whenever Bruce is out fighting crime.
04:41The Immaculate Bat Business Card
04:44Hello. I'm here to see Mr. Lucius Fox.
04:50American Psycho has a good handful of memorable scenes, but the most bizarre scene many will remember is the one
04:56where everybody seems obsessed over Patrick Bateman's business card.
05:01This is exactly the kind of bit you would expect to see in a Lego game, and of course, we
05:06do see this in Legacy of the Dark Knight.
05:08While checking into Wayne Tech HQ, Bruce hands the receptionist his business card when an onlooker notices and immediately begins
05:16praising the card's design.
05:18And he does it in the exact same way as the go-getters we see in American Psycho.
05:23You are not gonna believe this.
05:27The tasteful thickness of it. It even has a watermark.
05:31A real clown show.
05:33Surprise!
05:35Hey, Batman, you wanna play bat and mouse?
05:40We always have so much fun.
05:42But where to start?
05:45One of the coolest aspects of Legacy of the Dark Knight is how it blends Jack Nicholson's Joker and Heath
05:52Ledger's Joker into one character.
05:54But what of some of the other Jokers?
05:57Well, in Chapter 5, the Joker sends Batman on a wild goose chase, telling him to meet up at various
06:03sites only for Batman to find impostors.
06:06But these aren't regular impostors.
06:08These individuals are all based on other iterations of the Clown Prince of Crime.
06:13The third imposter is obviously Arthur Fleck from the 2019 movie Joker.
06:19The second is none other than Cesar Romero's Joker, as seen in the 1960s Batman television series.
06:26As for the third, well, this isn't Joker exactly, but it is clearly based on Gwynplaine,
06:33the character from The Man Who Laughs, played by Conrad Veidt, who would become the main inspiration for the Joker.
06:40Oh, you can say that over the phone, Batman, but if I had you here, I'd pound you to a
06:45pulp!
06:48Start pounding, Joker!
06:50Yet another Taken reference.
07:03Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga made the same exact reference with Qui-Gon Jinn, but when you're writing a
07:10character once played by Liam Neeson, it's almost impossible to not reference Taken, even if it's the same joke we've
07:17heard a million times.
07:18Early in the game, when Bruce meets Ra's al Ghul, Ra's mentions how he has a particular set of skills.
07:25I have a particular set of skills. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like Carmine Falcone.
07:33Yeah, you know the bit. It's the same exact line Neeson's character utters in the 2008 action flick.
07:39But what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long
07:46career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
07:49A sinful surprise in Shrek's office.
07:53Hey!
07:55Aren't you minds meant to be silent?
07:58I'm not with them. And I'm guessing neither are you.
08:02Much like Two-Face's line referencing Tommy Lee Jones, this little reference may be easy to miss for many players.
08:09Assuming you're speedrunning the game. Or you're just not paying attention.
08:12In Chapter 2, Batman and Catwoman infiltrate the office of Max Shrek, one of the antagonists featured in Batman Returns.
08:20This may seem like a weird inclusion of the character considering Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman is not seen in this game.
08:27However, Legacy of the Dark Knight acknowledges this and has an answer.
08:31In Shrek's office, one of the windows is shattered and covered with crime scene tape. Seems like Pfeiffer's Catwoman may
08:38not have survived the fall. Or she's off committing crime elsewhere, who knows.
08:43Right in me.
08:53Blending in.
09:03Blending in.
09:04While trying to apprehend Falcone, Batman and Gordon infiltrate a nightclub and soon find themselves surrounded on one of the
09:12dance floors.
09:13In a last ditch effort to reach Falcone, the duo manage to distract the crowd and begin dancing with them.
09:19Their final move shows bats running into Gordon's arms and being hoisted into the air.
09:25Older players will recognize this as the iconic move featured in Dirty Dancing, when Francis runs down the aisle into
09:33Johnny's arms.
09:34For movie buffs, it was a hilarious nod to a legendary film.
09:38But for Batman fans, our final entry will satisfy both communities.
09:43Time for the big finish, Gordon.
09:46Aw, I wish we had time to rehearse this.
09:52An Opera for the Ages
09:55As you traverse Gotham City, you'll notice a plethora of billboards that pay tribute to Batman-related celebrities, characters, and
10:04memorabilia.
10:05Among these billboards is one advertising a show called The Phantasm of the Opera.
10:11Those who grew up watching Batman the Animated Series will recognize the Phantasm from the movie based on the show,
10:17Batman, Mask of the Phantasm.
10:20Unfortunately, the titular villain does not make an appearance in Legacy of the Dark Knight outside of this billboard.
10:26Unless TT Games is working on DLC levels, or character packs based on other Batman adventures?
10:33Well, then there may be a chance yet.
10:35Was there a reference you noticed while playing Legacy of the Dark Knight?
