00:00So, you're finally awake.
00:06It has been quite a long time, Link.
00:11Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're looking at hidden details, features, and other things you may not know about Breath
00:17of the Wild.
00:18Now, for all the experts out there, we might not say anything you haven't heard before,
00:22but we've done our best to compile facts that general players might be unaware of.
00:27But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the
00:32bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:37Feeding time.
00:38As we all know, feeding a dog three times will cause them to lead Link to buried treasure.
00:43However, you can skip one of these feedings by just standing near one of them for ten seconds, which causes
00:48its affection towards Link to rise by one level.
00:50They're also far from the only creatures you can feed in the game, though they are the only ones that
00:55lead to a reward.
00:57Other farm animals like cows and goats will happily eat Hyrule herbs, and wild animals like squirrels and boars will
01:04chow down on some acorns.
01:06You can even feed some enemies like bokoblins.
01:13Shop indicators.
01:15Sometimes a hidden detail stares you straight in the face for years and you still don't notice.
01:20Different shops in different villages have visual indicators to signify what you can buy there, so you can spot them
01:26from afar.
01:27All general goods stores are marked by a display pot by their signs, always in the style of the region.
01:32More interesting are the clothing stores.
01:34Built above their entrances are giant versions of clothing items the people of the region wear.
01:39The robes of the Sheikah above the shop in Kakariko Village, the giant necklace and bra above Gerudo Towns,
01:46and by far the silliest, a big metal headband and loincloth above the shop in Goron City.
01:52Link's backstory.
01:54Hero of Hyrule, chosen by the sword that seals the darkness.
01:58You don't get too much of Link's backstory in Breath of the Wild, mostly just sprinkles here and there,
02:03like how his father was a night before him and his childhood connection to Mipha.
02:07The companion book, Creating a Champion, gives a more in-depth look.
02:10We learned that Link comes from Hateno Village and through concept art that Nintendo considered including past family members.
02:17Although details are a mystery, it speculates that he's had the Master Sword since around 12 to 13 years old.
02:23It also gives accounts of some heroic feats before the game begins.
02:27Stories passed down by the Zora detail his victory over a Lynel and how he taught Zora children different skills.
02:33He also defeated a rogue guardian during a test run at Hyrule Castle, which is what earned him the spot
02:38of Zelda's guardian.
02:41Link, save yourself! Go!
02:43An easier time getting star fragments.
02:46Star fragments are pretty rare resources in Breath of the Wild, unless you know how to farm for them.
02:51You'll see them fall at a random time of night, prompting you to run or warp in their direction to
02:56stop them from disappearing when the sun rises.
02:58But there is a way to make reaching them a lot easier.
03:02If you see one fall, you can build a campfire, rest until the following night, and you'll still see the
03:07star fragment shining in the distance.
03:09That way you've got a full night to make it over there, with much less risk of losing it.
03:19A failed exploit.
03:21Eventide Island provides one of the most memorable challenges in Breath of the Wild, as all of Link's items and
03:27resources, save for his Sheikah Slate, are taken as soon as he steps on shore.
03:32However, while still standing in the shallow water, you can drop any items you might want to take into the
03:37challenge, and they'll still be there after the opening, which obviously makes everything a lot easier.
03:43But if they're still in your inventory when you complete the challenge, when the items Link collected on the island
03:48are swapped for the ones that were taken, you'll lose those items.
03:51So, better drop them once again before wrapping things up.
03:55A helping fairy.
04:03In the game's DLC, Link gets the opportunity to face the four main bosses in rematches.
04:08You're only given limited gear, and you only get a few pieces of food to heal.
04:13The limited resources definitely make the fights trickier, but since they are rematches, most players probably don't die too many
04:20times.
04:21However, if you do, the game will eventually give you a fairy along with your food, which will revive you
04:28the next time you go down.
04:29It's a nice safety net to get you through the fight, and something that most seasoned players would never see.
04:39Mushroom Fishing
04:46When it comes to fishing in Breath of the Wild, most of us just chuck a bomb in the water
04:51or fire a lightning arrow.
04:53But taking the time and utilizing the proper resources can actually make amassing fish a little easier.
04:58Different fish are drawn in by different types of mushrooms, which connect to whatever boosts they give Link when used
05:03in a dish.
05:04For example, you can lure in schools of voltfin trout with zapshrooms, armored porgy with ironshrooms, or regular Hylian bass
05:12with Hylian mushrooms.
05:13And then you bomb them to hell.
05:15Joke's on you!
05:17Across the game, you'll find the Hylian language, which has naturally been translated so you can look up what everything
05:22says.
05:23Most of the time, it's what you expect.
05:26A hotel marked by hotel, or a welcome sign above a town.
05:29The best one is actually quite small, and tied to a specific location, Kakariko Village.
05:35There are two books Link can read inside Impa's house, Paya's Diary, and The Journal of Various Worries, which holds
05:41hints towards the village's side quests.
05:43But when the Hylian text on the actual asset is translated, the first page reads,
05:49April 1st. Today was a dry, hot, and sunny day. I went to school. This diary is a very important
05:55document.
05:56And the second page reads, April 2nd. Yesterday was fool's day. Everything that I wrote was false.
06:03That is all. See you tomorrow.
06:05A nice little joke for those who took the time to translate.
06:08Sheikah Slate Translations
06:09Hylian isn't the only language found across Breath of the Wild. Ancient Sheikah has also been translated,
06:15and the most interesting uses of it are within the Sheikah Slate.
06:18Like the Hylian, some cases are obvious labels. Runes are labeled first item, second item, and so on.
06:25Places on the map come with simple descriptors like location underneath towns and villages.
06:30Most interesting, though, is the page of photographs tied to Link's forgotten memories.
06:34Some of them can be hard to track down on your own, but just above each one, in Ancient Sheikah,
06:40is their exact location.
06:42Once Link unlocks the memory, the Sheikah text will then be translated to whatever language you have your switch set
06:48to.
06:48Nothing to trade
06:49Just outside the entrance to Hateno Village, Link can meet the Horned Statue,
06:54an ancient deity who was trapped in stone by the goddess Hylia.
06:57The statue lets you trade in a heart to increase your stamina wheel, and vice versa.
07:02And the statue gives Link a demonstration by taking one of his hearts.
07:05If you haven't upgraded Link's health, it takes part of his stamina wheel instead.
07:10However, if you haven't upgraded either, the statue will take nothing and turn Link away.
07:15It's highly unlikely most people will ever see this, since you have a ton of opportunities to upgrade Link before
07:21making it here,
07:22but it's still cool that Nintendo put in dialogue for it, though, just in case.
07:35Gerudo Fashion
07:36In Breath of the Wild, Link can't step foot inside Gerudo Town without being disguised as a woman, i.e.
07:43wearing the Gerudo outfit.
07:44And should you change while he's inside, he'll be kicked out.
07:47But there are two pieces of clothing Link can swap into that are also allowed, the Thunder Helm and the
07:54Sand Boots.
07:54It's likely because these are clothing items tied to this area.
07:58The Sand Boots are earned through a side quest and make traversing the desert much easier.
08:02And the Thunder Helm is clearly an important artifact to the Gerudo people.
08:06What's interesting is that you can wear different masks or different pants, and Link will still be thrown out.
08:12The Mysterious Hole
08:14Just below the Lanayru Tower, you can find a wide but shallow hole whose purpose is a complete mystery to
08:21us.
08:22There are some resources to gather around it in the nearby alcoves and a few minor enemies, but there's no
08:28hidden treasure or even a Korok puzzle tied to this hole.
08:32While some thought it just an oddity that would be replaced by an entrance to the depths in Tears of
08:37the Kingdom, that isn't the case.
08:38You can go to this exact spot in the sequel where you'll find that Nintendo did indeed fill in the
08:44hole with a Korok puzzle.
08:46Alternative ways to kill Guardians
08:56Guardians, particularly the stalkers, terrified pretty much every player when they first came across them.
09:02We all know how best to kill them now, but there are some additional fun methods many players might not
09:07think of.
09:07Guardian stalkers can be knocked into bodies of water, where they'll eventually drown, and pools of lava, where they'll burn.
09:14It makes total sense, but it obviously isn't the method one first thinks of.
09:19Their eye also isn't the only crit spot, as another one underneath can be hit if you topple a Guardian
09:24over.
09:25In a wetlands area, go ahead and use Kryonis underneath a Guardian and watch it get launched into the air.
09:30The Friendly Guardians
09:32Alternatively, if you don't feel like fighting a Guardian stalker, you can always force them to be your friend instead.
09:38Once Link has completed Divine Beast Varuta and gotten Urbosa's Fury, unleash the powerful lightning blasts on the Guardian to
09:45stun it.
09:46Immediately after, use the Stasis Rune to briefly freeze it in place, and once both the effects of Urbosa's Fury
09:52and Stasis have worn off, the Guardian no longer views Link as a threat.
09:55You can even hop on its head and ride it around.
09:59Hinox Behavior
10:08Hinoxes are classic Zelda enemies, having debuted in A Link to the Past.
10:12In Breath of the Wild, they come with some interesting features not every player will see.
10:16If you start a fight with one, and then get far away enough, it will start throwing bombs, a reference
10:21to how they attacked in their first appearance.
10:23Additionally, unlike the Guardians, these guys can swim, which is odd since it's highly unlikely a fight with them will
10:30lead into a body of water.
10:31Finally, the Stalnox variant comes with a pretty easy win condition.
10:35Normally, Link shoots out its eye so you can deal some extra damage before the mini-boss picks it back
10:40up.
10:41But, if you simply pick it up and walk away instead, the Stalnox itself will quickly die.
10:47Smoking out the bees
10:49If Link wants some tasty honey, he has to deal with the bees first.
10:53Of course, they're easy to kill, but there are alternative, non-violent ways to get rid of them.
10:58Link can hold a lit torch underneath the nest, which will send them running.
11:02This doesn't always work. Depending on the height of the nest, the bees may start attacking before Link can get
11:07near.
11:07Or, if you're patient, you can build and wait by a campfire in the near vicinity, and once you do,
11:12the bees will be gone and their honey will be for the taking.
11:15The Mighty Lynel
11:29Another older enemy given a makeover for Breath of the Wild were Lynels, and they quickly earned a reputation as
11:35the toughest enemies in the game.
11:37This was by design, but it's weird considering they aren't bosses, nor even overworld mini-bosses with titles and big
11:44health bars.
11:45Despite having more HP than all of them.
11:49The lowest leveled Lynel starts with 2,000 health, more than Muldugas and any of the Talus or Hinox variants.
11:56Although the Blight bosses scale gaining more HP the more you've defeated, they still max out at 2,000 HP,
12:02the same as the weakest Lynel.
12:04Moreover, the strongest variant, the Gold Lynel, has 7,500 HP, falling just short of Calamity Ganon's 8,000 HP,
12:12though that's only if you didn't complete any Divine Beasts.
12:15They're also by far the most intelligent of the non-boss or mini-boss enemies.
12:20Although Kilton's Monster Masks will completely fool other enemies into not attacking Link,
12:25the Lynel Mask works for only a few moments before it attacks.
12:39Rare weapon signifiers.
12:41There are approximately one billion weapons in Breath of the Wild, and the best ones come with modifiers, like increased
12:48durability or attack power.
12:50Instead of just picking up everything you find and looking at it in your menu, there are a couple of
12:54clues to make you aware of what you're picking up.
12:56If Link is near a weapon with one of these bonuses, you'll hear a faint but distinct shimmer sound.
13:09But it's easier to visually tell these weapons apart, as they also sparkle more than regular weapons.
13:15Merchant Secrets
13:17Traveling merchants roam all across Hyrule, selling a variety of goods.
13:21A lot of players probably know that when you catch them running from the rain, their prices will be lowered
13:25since they're in a rush.
13:27What you might not know is that you can sometimes get these items for free.
13:31These NPCs can also be saved from monsters, which earns Link a small reward.
13:35Save the same merchant enough times, and they'll start giving you items from their own stock.
13:40They do also have a certain amount of potions or meals to get through too, though, and eventually they'll just
13:46start giving you green rubies.
13:48Bokoblin Behavior
13:49Although they're one of the most common enemies in the game, the bokoblins also display some of the most interesting
13:55behavior.
13:55There are all kinds of little animations or quirks you may never notice, but which contribute to making them feel
14:01lifelike.
14:02Archer bokoblins will close one of their eyes when aiming at Link, and their stomach will visibly suck in before
14:08they blow on a horn, alerting others of Link's presence.
14:11They'll also stop attacking once lured too far away from their spawn point.
14:16Even more intriguing is how Nintendo programmed them to care for their fellow monsters.
14:20A specific bokoblin in the Gerudo Highlands is upset over its friend being stuck in a block of ice.
14:26You can free it from afar with fire arrows and then watch as the two friends sit down and catch
14:31up.
14:31And in Tears of the Kingdom, if you kill a boss bokoblin with an ancient arrow, its followers will weep
14:37out of grief.
14:38What fun facts about Breath of the Wild do you think most players still don't know?
