00:03back in october 2021 the sun had a bit of a tantrum letting out an epic x-class flare the
00:09likes of which had never been seen before that's because instrumentation on earth the moon and
00:14even on mars all detected the flare despite the two planets being on opposite sides of the sun
00:20when it was released experts say this is the first and only time something like this has ever
00:24been detected and they say it could have serious implications for astronauts traveling and
00:29potentially living in space that's because what tech on the moon earth and mars detected was the
00:35radiation released by the sun on earth we have a magnetosphere that maintains our atmosphere that
00:40atmosphere prevents much of the sun's radiation from reaching our planet's surface and affecting
00:44humanity however in space there is no atmosphere and with nasa planning a lunar base in the near
00:50future we're going to need to know how much radiation those astronauts are to be exposed to
00:54during events like this one according to the researchers who led the study quote our calculations
00:59of the past ground level enhancement events show that on average one event every 5.5 years may have
01:04exceeded the safe dose level on the moon if no radiation protection had been provided with the
01:09researchers adding that luckily we usually have at least 15 to 18 hours warning as the dangerous
01:14radiation moves across space giving potential moon dwellers time to seek protected shelter
