Back in October 2021 the Sun had a bit of a tantrum, letting out an epic X-class flare the likes of which had never been seen before. That’s because instrumentation on Earth, the Moon and even Mars all detected the flare, despite the two planets being on opposite sides of the Sun when it was released.

00:24been detected and they say it could have serious implications for astronauts traveling and
00:29potentially living in space that's because what tech on the moon earth and mars detected was the
00:35radiation released by the sun on earth we have a magnetosphere that maintains our atmosphere that
00:40atmosphere prevents much of the sun's radiation from reaching our planet's surface and affecting
00:44humanity however in space there is no atmosphere and with nasa planning a lunar base in the near
00:50future we're going to need to know how much radiation those astronauts are to be exposed to
00:54during events like this one according to the researchers who led the study quote our
00:58calculations of the past ground level enhancement events showed that on average one event every
01:035.5 years may have exceeded the safe dose level on the moon if no radiation protection had been
01:08provided with the researchers adding that luckily we usually have at least 15 to 18 hours warning as
01:14the dangerous radiation moves across space giving potential moon dwellers time to seek protected shelter
